NFL Cuts 2010: Redskins Final Roster

Mutt Cuts

Rookie: Mike, what are the odds of a Coach like you and a player like me ending up together?

Shanahan: Well, that's difficult to say. I mean, we don't really...

RookieHit me with it! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way just to see you, Coach. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?

Shanahan: Not good.

Rookie: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?

Shanahan: I'd say more like one out of a million.
[pause
Rookie: So you're telling me there's a chance... *YEAH!*

Well, those chances are over for 22 players. We'll update the list of those cut as they come in...

Cooley blocked extremely well this preseason

and that was against 1s. Pushing people back.

Hogs Haven. On Twitter. And Facebook.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Sep 4, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Cooley's never been a "non-blocker"

Has he been distinguished by his blocking? No.
But I still remember clearly a play in 2007 when Portis got a TD from about the 18 or so almost solely because he held onto Cooley’s jersey and went along for the ride as Cooley leveled any would-be tacklers in front of him.

by kseandoyle on Sep 4, 2010 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I still remember clearly multiple plays in 2009 where CP got crushed in the backfield because of Cooley, Sellers & Heyer/Brown blocking the left side. I think Cooley’s a decent blocker on the move but definitely not on short-yardage downs.

by VA_Skin on Sep 4, 2010 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Cooley and Sellers were being forced to block way more than FBs or TEs should ever be expected to last year. They had to make up for the complete lack of blocking on the line. Cooley does best when he’s a lead blocker taking on LBs and DBs, not when he has to take on DTs and DEs before they’ve even been touched. And Sellers definitely should have done better, but there would have been less criticism directed his way last year had he also been blocking D-Linemen who had at least been disrupted at the line of scrimmage.

by kseandoyle on Sep 4, 2010 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Sellers = twinkle toes

It’s his job to disrupt those lineman!

Torain?

That really surprises me. Guess Williams made the team over him?

by 8vechkin on Sep 4, 2010 1:17 PM EDT reply actions

That means only 3 RBs, with Austin gone, what does this mean for the WRs?

tryon

gone too according to rotoworld http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=4883
Do we really see Byron Westbrook as the 5th corner? OR do we bring in a Brandon MCDonald just cut from the browns?

by Draco on Sep 4, 2010 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

So much for Tryon being the next Darrell Green

He was being hyped up as one of the best prospects in football. Guess that’s not happening, at least not here.

by 8vechkin on Sep 4, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

wasnt he a 3rd Rd pick

my god the Vinnie drafts were a disaster.

in reality the only good non 1st Rd picks we have from the Vinny era are Cooley, Davis, and Horton (tho I refuse to give Vinny credit for Horton as he took a Punter the rd before he took Horton so he was prepared for another team to take Horton so as to get a Punter who was cut after 3 games)

High rd (i.e 2nd 3rd Rd failures, Kelly, Rhinehart (tho I had hopes for him pre-injury) Heyer and maybe Thomas.

Please feel free to add any I have forgotten from each list

Tryon was a 4th round pick

But not that it makes a huge difference.

Kedric Golston and Reed Doughty were 6th round picks in 2006 right off the top of my head. I’d consider them to be pretty good (as in serviceable) picks ups, considering where they were drafted.

Not that I’m trying to defend Cerrato or anything.

by bigrm18 on Sep 5, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Can't believe Austin cut - and could lose him from the practice squad

Bryant had to stay. Maybe Roydell Williams and/or Wade stay. Paulsen cut? Gotta be PS. R Robinson and Tryon both cut? Means Westbrook? Torain figures.

by Donnio1234 on Sep 4, 2010 1:26 PM EDT reply actions

Not too surpised on Torrain

Shanny loves him but he never even got a sniff with any other team. I am shocked and happy that Keiland made the team. I am an avid LSU fan and Keiland is a talented kid who was always stuck behind a guy having a career year.

Surprised by Austin

People have been saying Tryon was gonna get cut for weeks though so I’m not surprised by that.

by BayAreaBullet on Sep 4, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

they've been saying

it for weeks, but Westbrook hasn’t been outplaying anybody and he’s still here.

SpottieOttieDopaliscious

by Rekka on Sep 4, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

well in camp and practice Westbrook was better

They were about the same in games and Westbrook is better at ST. When we’re talking about the 5th CB it’s more about ST.

by BayAreaBullet on Sep 4, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't wanna go back

and copy it here from another post, but their stats in games are night and day. And if they’re going off who played better in camps as opposed to games then I expect to see Devin Thomas cut in the next couple of hours.

SpottieOttieDopaliscious

by Rekka on Sep 4, 2010 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Well they clearly aren't basing it just on games as Willie Parker and Austin got cut and they has better cumulative stats in the preseason

If a guy is out playing another consistently for week in practice anc camps(as was reported) I bet that plays into things and I don’t think they post stats for missed tackles which has been his real problem. Still I think it was more about ST at the #5 CB spot.

by BayAreaBullet on Sep 4, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

pretty sure

They’re basing it on teams play. Westbrook has always been one of our top ST players.

by CJHutch on Sep 4, 2010 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Westbrook

obviously, one of the coaches really likes him. Waiting on the receivers now.

by Donnio1234 on Sep 4, 2010 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

I read somewhere

how they think Westbrook could play Safety in a pinch.

by VA_Skin on Sep 4, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely

His name is Danny Smith. Westbrook is without question one of the best ST players on the team. Keeping players for the play on ST’s is nothing new. Look no further than George Allen and Joe Gibbs here, who both did it regularly.

Suprised at tyron cut. FO has him really high on there prospect list.

by lynxtheone on Sep 4, 2010 2:12 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I know you gotta groom young guys

But I wouldn’t mind signing Leinart if we could get him cheap enough. The guy would easily be the best 3rd QB and once he got the system, push Grossman at 2nd QB.

by BigOLinemen on Sep 4, 2010 2:43 PM EDT reply actions

He got cut because he wouldn't accept a backup role in AZ

If you bring him in here to back up McNabb (and maybe Grossman too), then you’ll just have to deal more with his unhappiness.

by kseandoyle on Sep 4, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

Shit, kinda had a little brain lapse. You’re right though. If he would accept the role, he’d be a good pick-up though…

by BigOLinemen on Sep 4, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

You don't think..

..backing up a QB of McNabb’s caliber would be easier for him to deal with? I’m not saying I’m all in on the idea, but I would think there is a difference between backing up Derek Anderson and Donovan McNabb.

by willster on Sep 4, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think so, actually

I think he feels that he’s paid his dues and that it’s his turn now And to some extent, he’s right (especially in Arizona, where by most accounts, he’s outperformed Anderson all offseason both in practice and in preseason games). At some point, you can’t develop a guy any more. You either give him the reigns or you do what Arizona just did — you send him on his way. He’s gonna be pretty adamant about trying to land somewhere where he has the chance to start though.

by kseandoyle on Sep 4, 2010 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

i heard the prob with leinart was that he couldnt move the team. like campbell, defenses keyed on him pretty easily because he would always take the dump pass.

take this from someone who follows about a dozen sports

including Rugby, Aussie RUles, Rugby Leauge, Soccer, BBall, and of course NFL.

the one thing that is useful in all sports and can not be coached is pure speed.

If you have a guy who has genuine pace, you just have to try to utilise him and iron out the other issues.

Speed is king

I liked Torain

but, truthfully, I think I like Williams better. Seems to run with more power. Plus, his college highlights are sick. They’re ALMOST as good as Dennis Morris’ college tapes. But Williams is obviously a better pro. And Morris SUCKS. He’s AWFUL!! C’MON LJP, WHERE ARE YOU??

by CJHutch on Sep 4, 2010 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Now can we start admitting Shanny had a poor late draft

Capers cut, Morris cut ages ago and some genuine potential O-Line options remained on the board when we took Morris, or maybe we could have traded the Rd 7 pick and the Morris pick to trade up to get a decent O-LInement

I will say it again, Shanny barely had a winning record in a weak division, his SB’s were over a decade ago with an elite QB, he has a history of poor personel decisions and now we are already seeing that he is no saviour

than to be wrong, and I will be cheering them on more than anyone else (tho quietly so as not to wake my flatmate at 3am) but I just dont buy the Shanahan as saviour talk,

For that matter I feel the same way about Holmgren in Cleveland, the NFC East, the AFC North are tough tough tough divisions, and coming from the cupcake divisions out west is not a great grounding for the struggles on the East Coast.

Plus Shanny personnel record is poor going on dismal and Allen is a money managing GM, I just wish we had got a great Personnel managing GM to oversee Shanahan.

With that being said, we are way better off than under Zorn, I just dont see us getting a SB within the next 3 years with this leadership team, and I fear that we did not do enough rebuilding instead just topping up with veterans when we need youth and depth.

Again I would love nothing more than to be wrong, but I fear that for once in my life, in this instance I am right.

yeah

those guys are really versatile, especially Doughty. I like Horton better in the free safety position than strong, but I think it was Horton who said earlier this summer that there are no “strong” or “free” safeties in this defense. Just left and right.

4-6 from the time of his injury

Which was two weeks ago (technically 13 days). So he has another 2-4 weeks. Hypothetically, he could be back for Week 2, but I’m not counting on that too much. No reason to rush back and then spend the season in and out of the injury report.

I really wish

We could make a spot for this guy. I don’t know how practice squad stuff works (I’m assuming the team that cuts the player gets first dibs), but I wouldn’t mind picking him up. So much potential there. I did hear though he is a very likely practice squad guy, so it’s not like he is done in the NFL.

by BigOLinemen on Sep 4, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Right now he's on waivers

Which means that any team in the league can sign him to their roster on his current contract. If he clears waivers (in something like 4 days but I don’t really know how long that takes) — that is, if no one picks him up — then he’s practice squad eligible. But the Titans will always have rights to him as a practice squad member before any other team. The only way to trump those rights is to sign him to a 53-man roster. At that point, he’s yours (unless the Titans decide to outbid you, but who has ever heard of a bidding war for a practice squad player?). Basically, the team to have last had him under contract has the right to retain him on their practice squad. If they choose to decline that option, he’s available to all practice squads.

Even FOX6 itself seems unsure of its own report, saying they can not “personally confirm nor deny” their source’s claim. Still, the signing would make a ton of sense for the Vikings, who have lost Sidney Rice to a hip injury and cut Javon Walker today. Although Housh is well below average after the catch and as a playmaker, he can still help the Vikings as a possession receiver.

I think his time with the Seahawks is more indicative of who he is as a player now. Like I said before, his situation reminds me way too much of Randle El.

by CJHutch on Sep 4, 2010 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

He caught 79 balls as a #1 last year

How does that remind you of Randle El? He’s a #2. El was a #3-4.

by BayAreaBullet on Sep 4, 2010 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Houz got his contract

because of what he did playing next to Chad Johnson, just like Randle Fell got his playing off Hines Ward. 79 balls or not, he is obviously not a REAL #1. Otherwise tons of teams woulda been knocking down their door when he became available.

by CJHutch on Sep 4, 2010 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Who said he needs to come in here as a #1?

We need receivers in general. To get a guy who can get you 70-80 receptions and 800-900 yards would be a great achievement. Moss and Housh and 1 and 2 would make out receivers a lot more legit than Moss and Galloway.

by kseandoyle on Sep 4, 2010 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

he is obviously not a real #1 because he got cut and had no off field issues. he also has a tough contract to absorb as it stands. dont want that contract but would welcome him under diff terms

by les boulez bomber on Sep 4, 2010 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Randle El wasn’t ever very good (just did a lot of different things) as a receiver when he was in Pittsburgh. Housh, on the other hand, was legitimately VERY good for the Bengals.
Also, the guy had a little over 900 yards last year. In fact, he had 79 catches for 911 yards and 3 TDs, whereas Santana Moss had 70 catches for 902 yards and 3 TDs. CJHutch, do you think we need to cut Moss? Sounds like stats like that don’t cut it for you.

by kseandoyle on Sep 4, 2010 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you're getting me wrong

as I said in the other post on this topic – I was all for bringing him in. Just not for a high price, and DEFINITELY not on a trade. If he was a legit #1, he would have been traded for.

by CJHutch on Sep 4, 2010 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

OK, well...

He’s cut loose now, so there’s no need to pay a high price or give up anything in a trade. So… what would be the problem at this point?

by kseandoyle on Sep 4, 2010 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

No problem

I was initially responding to the report that the Vikes signed him. I was just saying I wasn’t heartbroken that we didn’t have him. Would I rather have him than Williams or Galloway? Definitely. All I’m saying is I don’t think he’s the top level receiver everyone thought he was in Cincy.

by CJHutch on Sep 4, 2010 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

He’s a great wingman. He earned his chance to attempt to be a #1 receiver and didn’t do too well at it (the rest of Seattle’s offense didn’t help him of course). If he and Moss want to each be our 1.5, I’d be very happy with it lol

I bet you were

a Colt Brennan fan too, right Ken??

by VA_Skin on Sep 4, 2010 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

That's because

Tebow doesn’t make reads. Personal bias aside, I see major problems in Tebow’s ability to diagnose a defense pre-snap. The entire Urban Meyer offense is set up where he already knows where he’s going with the ball. Against higher-level college defenses, the scheme won the game. On the occasions that Tebow didn’t have his first two targets wide open, he tucked it and ran. That doesn’t work in the NFL. If he can learn the pre-snap reads and diagnose as he goes, use his legs to open things up downfield for his arm, he’ll be OK. I don’t personally think he’ll be able to succeed, but I like the Broncos in general so I hope I’m wrong.

by tuckwell on Sep 5, 2010 5:10 AM EDT up reply actions

OK, but if his work ethic is anywhere near what is raved about, he will immerse himself in the film room and improve on the field. Tebow was drafted on his natural skills, what he can become if he applies himself over time and the marketing windfall he will bring if he succeeds. I think he will learn to recognize defenses. He was a winner in college and has a lot of work to do, but I think he becomes a starter in this league in time, and maybe more!

He did have a few starts last year

But nothing spectacular… He’s got potential, but I don’t agree with some (coughDarrellGreencough) who think he is poised to become a Pro Bowler. He’s fast. That’s about it. It’s a good pickup by the Colts though because there’s lots of things you can teach a player, but you can’t teach fast. And so if the Colts think they can teach him the rest, then good luck.

Indianapolis Colts News and Updates

by coltsfan723 on Sep 4, 2010 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

A cover 2

is a lot of responsibility for a DB. If he can learn his assignments, he’s got the speed to cover the field and develop into a legit cover man. I wouldn’t hope for much more, myself, but of course, a good cover man is always good to have around.
We run a 3-4 right now. It’s newly installed, so I can’t say much on how the backfield works in it. What I do about it is that safeties and corners basically just have mirror assignments on the left and right side and that we should be expecting a lot of blitzing, including blitzing from DBs. Maybe Tryon didn’t excel in aggressive stuff like that. For the last two years (since Tryon’s rookie year) we had a basic 4-3 base and a really primitive backfield that only resembled the cover-2 in that the free safety was waaaayyy off the line of scrimmage. Our basic philosophy was to prevent teams from getting a lot of yards (unless they got a big play) and to get the ball back only by forcing punts or stumbling into an interception by accident.
Before that we ran the same modified cover-2 that the Saints now have (only we didn’t give up as many yards). We had that for 4 years.

by kseandoyle on Sep 4, 2010 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

depends on what year you're talking about

This is our first year in the 3-4, so who knows how he plays in it. As for the Cover 2, he kind of played in it the past few years. Unfortunately, it was under Blache. And under Blache, the DB’s were asked to line up AS FAR AWAY from the receiver as possible, and pray they don’t throw a hitch, slant, or any other underneath route.

by CJHutch on Sep 4, 2010 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

well last year we ran

the innovative.

2 man rush with everyone else standing just behind the 1st down markers defence.

It really was a stroke of genius by (then DC) Blatche, he got a potential weapon in AH to never try to penetrate, then even tho he never blitzed he still managed with 9 guys back to leave a little pocket of space just at and beyond the 1st down marker so that oppostions could easily and without much risk plod up the field on 8 or 9 play drives, then in the Red Zone he would ensure that at least one WR was wide open while trying to put as little pressure on the QB as possible.

AS I say it was innovative

All I'm going to say is

Prepare to get burned in the Secondary A LOT if he ever ends up as your 1st option. He’s got great speed and he’s a decent tackler, but he has marginal cover skills at best. I’m glad he’s gone.

by VA_Skin on Sep 4, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I noticed in a draft video

that he has no instinct on reading routes at all. But when he got burned he usually recoverd. He won’t get a lot playing I don’t think. Unless the Colts use him in the Nickel spot. I think he was brought in just for depth.

How’s his Special Teams play? Fast and a decent tackler seem to bode well for him there.

Rich Tandler's comment on the defensive line is an important issue with the Redskins' roster after the cuts. The Teams

practice squad does lean heavily toward the offense, but that only gives week to week flexibility. Tandler said, “Having depth here is good but keeping eight linemen when you only field three at a time takes away players from other positions.”

There is no other part of the teams’ depth chart that has this many backups. This is nearly 3 players for every slot. It is important to keep these linemen fresh, but at what cost at other positions? This heavy bent toward the defensive line may impact special teams during a game as much as anything. IMO, this “cost” could be chalked up to the 3-4 defense transition in one season. The FO didn’t have much option in restructuring the roster.
