The Vincent Jackson Situation

****

UPDATE: the rumor mill is spinning with the following scanario (via http://twitter.com/incarceratedbob)

Haynesworth to Jets, Jets pick + Redskins pick to SD, Jackson to Redskins

****

The new settlement between the league and Vincent Jackson will allow him to play in week 5 if he is traded.  The Chargers have until next Friday to work out a trade, otherwise, he will not be eligible to come back from suspension until week 7.

The story is here: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5579273

A bizarre arrangement to be sure.  Here are some facts that I find interesting:

1. An unknown team negotiated a 1-year deal with Vincent Jackson last week but the trade wasn't done because the Chargers didn't like the picks they would get back.  The Chargers' price is thought to be a 2nd round pick.  Maybe.  No one really knows.

2. The Redskins have no 3rd or 4th rounders in 2011, but they do have a 2nd.

3. The Redskins re-entered Haynesworth-for-picks talks last week.

4. Galloway, Thomas, and Williams were no-shows against the cowboys.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I think that the Redskins are poised to get while the getting is good, and I hope that they do.  I think that trading Haynesworth is seen as step one to our organization and getting VJ is step two.  Unfortunately, timing will not be ideal for us to do both.  Despite the conventional wisdom that the Redskins need to get younger, build a foundation, and stop making these kinds of acquisitions, there is tremendous value in making this move, with or without trading AH to restock our 2011 draft and free cap space.  If VJ can be had for our 2nd rounder and change, it needs to get done.

I have made the argument elsewhere that trading a 22-year old prospect for the 27-year-old VJ is not mortgaging the future.  VJ is an offensive weapon who could give us his prime years while we have Donovan McNabb at the helm.  He satisfies our greatest need, and he will be hungry coming off of this dispute with his former team.

The Redskins have always been the team to make this move, and now it is time.  Get it done.
