Redskins Under Investigation By NFLPA For Hall Davis Trade
Any rookie that is drafted by an NFL team is owed 85 percent of his salary if subsequently cut by the team which drafted him. By trading Dennis Morris to the Rams (and vice versa Hall Davis to the Redskins), and having him cut by St. Louis, the Skins save $272,000.

I guess Bruce Allen's a little too smart for his own good

Way to stay classy Redskins
I hope that’s not what actually went down, seems pretty cheap!
The world looks mighty different when you're peeking out your belly button
The trade
Makes more sense now. But $272,000 seems like an insignificant amount (by NFL standards) to go through all of this and possibly break the rules.
can they be sued?
I mean there is no CBA agreement so isnt the 85% rule null and viod until thier is a new CBA?
The 85% rule is only in effect during an uncapped year
There’s no CBA, but there are league rules in place for uncapped years, and this is one of them.
Danny's team
doesn’t take the field in anything less than 12 karats

The Dallas game isn't even sold out...club level tix aren't selling...
Still seems crazy they’d do this to a kid they drafted after the trillions they’ve wasted on other players.
Hogs Haven. On Twitter. And Facebook.
Thats not going to be the case...
They are only selling club level as season tickets, so it makes sense why the Dallas game isn’t sold out. You don’t think they will open it up for individual tickets next week? I haven’t seen an R’ You In ad on here all day, hmmm….
I meant that as 2 different things
Normal uppers were available on Ticketmaster last I saw.
Hogs Haven. On Twitter. And Facebook.
Are you sure it was for the game @ FedEx?
I’m pretty sure the Skins and FedEx field don’t even use TicketMaster: http://www.ticketmaster.com/search?tm_link=tm_header_search&q=Redskins
AGREED
This does look like nickel and dime stuff by NFL standards….I hope there’s more to it than just trying to screw some kid out of $270,000+
Does this mean Doug Dutch has a beef?
He got cut by the Ravens….
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Davis and Morris
That is just unbelievable. If Bruce Allen pulled a stunt like that, he deserves a kick in the rear. And he can take all those puff pieces about what a great guy he is and stuff them up his you-know-what. Hypocrite. But is there any chance that they fully intend to pay Morris his money if St Louis doesn’t pay him? And that St Louis now intends to pay Hall his money? I.e., the player is guaranteed the 85% eventually, if by chance he never earns it from a team during the year?
Damn Domino.....a 180 there....
do you know the whole story?……you have been backing up overpaid, unappreciative, ignorant assholes all summer….and you are ready to crucify Bruce at the drop of a hat?
Magic
The first was an impulse, but then I started thinking – maybe it’s not what it seems. No, I don’t know the whole story. But according to the story, they (NFLPA) are investigating, so they must have some reason to be suspicious – somebody tipped them off. Not likely if somebody had explained to the players that they would eventually get their money. Even Kevin described it as inherently suspicious. As to Bruce, I did say “if…”, and went on to show a very possible explanation favorable to Bruce. Notice that the team did not jump up and say, “oh yeah, we’ll pay him if that happens” – i.e., that they were innocent.
I don’t get your point on greedy, overpaid… For one thing, Morris and Hall would not fit that category – I was actually implicitly defending the “little guys”. Although I have occasionally commented about the highly paid players and usually side with management in union matters, I also usually defend the individual players in disputes, as I did with Haynesworth on money matters (no conditions on the $21 mill, etc). As to the Skins, all pro teams are very ruthless – they have to be – roster space is precious – they sign and cut players left and right, at the drop of a hat. (I remember the one young guy who finally gave up in disgust after being cut two or three times, and realized he was being used. Todd Collins refused to play patsy for the Bears, and finally signed for a year, guaranteed). The stunt with Hall Davis was particularly brutal, even if they fully intended to pay Morris his money. The whole deal looked suspicious, which is why it drew flies. Bruce Allen ought to clarify things ASAP.
MagicHat -
Jefferson1935 just posted the 9/1 NFL Transactions list showing Byron Westbrook cut. If that is true, Espn knew it before Byron. Could be another case of lack of communication between the team and Allen’s office, and within those units. Also could suggest that Allen has not yet established total control over the organization. The Morris/Davis thing could also reflect internal confusion. Remember a few months ago some deals suggested to me that Snyder may have given up control, but put Allen/Shanahan on a budget. The Morris story – if the team doesn’t totally squash it immediately – could suggest a penny wise pound foolish, and cheap, philosophy. I like Allen and have supported most of what he has done, but if he did knowingly stiff those young guys for $270,000 (while throwing around millions), I’d be very disappointed in him. I stress – “if”. A simple denial, and vow to pay any money that was ultimately due, would end all speculation.
Hey I am not saying you are wrong...
and wont say if I agree or disagree until I know more. I was just a little surprised that you would take such a stand so quickly (yes, I see you did say “if” and that makes all the difference). I was not referring to Morris and Hall with my colorful adjectives up there, ore one particular that you spent most of the summer defending, and he is the only case of what seems to be unwarranted benevolence in the face of what is released in reports. You have been described as the “apologist of the board” and I was surprised you would speak out like you did without more facts in evidence.
Yeah, I sort of over-reacted at first
but I think I cooled down quickly. We just have to watch and see what happens. By the way, if I understand it right, St Louis was the one to benefit by trading (rather than cutting) Davis, but the Skins cutting him means that St Louis suddenly picked up an obligation to at some point pay (apparently to the rookie fund) the money Davis wasn’t going to make. So the Skins cutting him actually potentially hurt STL more than Davis, assuming STL paid in the 85%. Trading Morris initially benefits the Skins (by saving them a minimum payment), and they’d luck out if Morris made the team (STL or any NFL team). But they’ll eventually owe some money if he doesn’t play. Given the timing involved, money may not have had anything to do with trading for and then cutting Davis – they just took a look, and decided that he couldn’t make the team, although one person here said they could still put him on the practice squad.
By the way – “apologist for the board” – I think of it more as a defense lawyer on the board. It’s useful to give “the other side” of controversies so we’re not all “preaching to the choir” (heck, many wanted to trade AH, in which case we wouldn’t have him now). I’m also a contrarian in the stock market – think it’s often better to go against the crowd, who are usually wrong at key turning points. Of course, HH is not an auction market.
Transactions - many errors
I went into the transactions section of The Redskins on Yahoo Sports, August, and it was full of errors: they had the Skins signing Todd Collins, Marcus McCauley, Colt Brennan and one or two others. Obviously, other teams signed those guys, not us. I wonder if the mistakes are from Yahoo Sports or the team? By the way, it showed the Skins signing Punter Ed Pakulak (?). One thing is clear – don’t believe Yahoo Sports.
Clearly that isn’t a team error. It is a yahoo sports programming error that showed them as signed w/o changing their assigned team (players always keep the team they were last on even if retired/cut on that site until their new team).
Those signings weren’t improperly filed to the NFL and the NFLPA. You can find less error filled transactions on nfl.com
Preppie - yes, thanks
I finally figured out that it had to be yahoo or the NFL, and undoubtedly due to the computer doing just what you said.
