Bubble Boy: A Look at the Redskins WR Hopefuls
Here's an updated chart with the nine Redskins wide receivers that are left on the 75-man roster and their stats through 3 pre-season games. I've put them in order based on what I think is a fairly accurate guesstimation of the depth chart. John Keim is adamant about Devin Thomas being a bubble candidate to get cut, which I just don't believe (or am scared too). It's a shame that a kid with his hands and physical skills cannot be coached up into not only as a starter, but also worthy of a roster spot!
If Devin were to be cut, we know a team would pick him up immediately, so why wouldn't the Redskins trade him for a pick when they could the last week or two? Thomas is the tallest WR on the roster, and if Shanahan kept Malcolm Kelly around, why wouldn't he keep Devin? The former 2nd round pick is on this team barring an injury in Arizona.
| Pre-Season Stats Thru 3 Games | Height | Rec | Yds | Avg. | Lng | TD | FUM/Lost |
| Santana Moss (89) | 5'10 | 6 | 121 | 20.2 | 29 | 0 | 0 |
| Anthony Armstrong (13) | 5'11 | 7 | 101 | 14.4 | 45 | 1 | 0 |
| Joey Galloway (84) * | 5'11 | 3 | 29 | 9.7 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| Roydell Williams (87) | 6'0 | 6 | 64 | 10.6 | 21 | 0 | 0 |
| Devin Thomas (11) * | 6'2 | 4 | 75 | 18.6 | 44T | 1 | 1/0 |
| Terrence Austin (18) * | 5'11 | 5 | 52 | 10.1 | 17 | 0 | 0 |
| Bobby Wade (19) * | 5'10 | 4 | 59 | 14.7 | 21 | 0 | 0 |
| Brandon Banks (16) * | 5'7 | 3 | 64 | 21.3 | 29 | 0 | 1/1 |
| Shay Hodge (80) ** | 6'2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
The Redskins are likely keeping six WRs, so that leaves in my eyes Bobby Wade and Terrence Austin vying for a roster spot. None of these players have stood out on Special Teams except for Anthony Armstrong, so Thursday night really is a make or break night. The Redskins need a speedster should Moss get hurt (or suspended), so that really opens the door for Austin.
Note: A player has an asterisk for the number of games they did not play.

In case you didn't know...
One of Kevin’s weekend hobbies is to go out to the local public parks and squares in DC and take pictures of young foreign boys.
if you see my truck, come by and say hi
Kev took the HH Monitor job
because SB Nation offered him an unlimited candy budget. So I hear.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
I hope that the competition is between Galloway and Roydell Williams
With Wade and Hodge just taking up space for the last preseason game. I’d like for us to keep as many of the young guys around as possible at this position.
I would hope
DT, Moss, and Banks are the only guys with real deep speed.

Because he can return kicks?
He got a touchdown against Buffalo’s poor coverage unit, yes. But he also lost a fumble.
Terrence Austin is just as good, though slightly slower, and offers more as a receiver.
From redskins.com
Phillip Buchanon is expected to serve as the Redskins’ primary punt returner once the regular season starts – even though he has not returned a punt this preseason.
Thank God for continuity!
I was worried the situation at punt returns might begin to make some sense. Just like old times at Ashburn.
More Shanahanigans?
No film of Buchanon as PR? I believe he was PR guy a lot during camp…?

"I know what Phillip can do," Mike Shanahan said. "I’ve watched him his whole career, his pro career. I want to evaluate some of these younger guys."
My way of saying Nutshell.
I don’t even know why, myself… :)
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
I don't think so
Pretty sure he is on the TOP list with Galloway. (Too Old to Perform)
I think Wade, Williams, and Hodge get cut.
Banks sticks around bc he’ll take another punt to the house tomorrow night.
could be fun....but we are going to need a big, posession receiver
but its worth waiting for the right guy
give it time.....
at least we are not jumping at every self important, unsatisfied, over-rated, unappreciative, bullshit, T.O. wannabe, receiver that shows his ass on the streetcorner….someone will catch Shanny’s or Bruce’s or Kyle’s eye and they will sit down and discus the pro’s and con’s…..we don’t have that guy right now, but lets not go trying to stuff round holes into square pegs just to try to fit a profile, its all about the team.
I hope it's AJ Green or Julio Jones.
Those guys are phenoms. AJ Green looks like the new Calvin Johnson Jr.
My theory on Thomas: he made the team a while ago. He has never really been on the bubble — at least not recently. Thomas has seemed pretty relaxed in interviews, and I don’t think it’s because he’s stupid. I think he would have to do something obviously lackadaisical in the Arizona game to not make it.
I like DT, but at this point I think he could be good trade bait,
we have a list up of teams with pitiful WRs….and beyond that I could see him being a good fit in SF or Chicago….in exchange with the right team I think he is worth a geed OL or DL lineman….even possibly a second pick to the right team, like Buffalo or Cleveland.
Geed......
actually an ancient Scandinavian term, loosely translated to “proofread your posts before you hit send, asshole.”.
He can't be trade bait at this point
If he hasn’t gotten in games in the pre-season. I think the only reasons to hold him out are that he’s already got a spot or that he’s a longshot to make the roster. But I don’t think teams will trade for a guy who showed flashes last year and has almost no game film this preseason.
while my suggestions above might be a bit grandiose....
I wouldn’t be surprised if someone was interested in him….if we could get anything of value I wouldn’t be against pulling the trigger. I hope he does well here, but I can’t help thinking it might be time to move on.
We could adverstise him as
“another Vinny C miracle pick!” …or not… :-(
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Thomas
FYI – the Washington Post today had parts of an interview with him, and man, he did not seem relaxed. He sounded as if he thought he was on the bubble, and had to do well tomorrow. Worried, but still hopeful. The story was talking about the troubles of all the guys from the 2008 draft.
Thomas in.
DT seems to have gotten a lot of time playing with the first team this year, at least from what I read, so I have a feeling he’s in. Also from what i read it appeared that he spent the off season working hard to improve himself. He’ll make the cuts.

Anyone have McNabbs opinion
on how well he did in AZ Hell Week this summer. It may be McNabbs input is the diff.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Thomas
He didn’t play WR at all against the Jets – the third game, when most starters played the most.
That could equally be a sign for
staying or going. They have either given up on him (I don’t think so) or they needed to look at some of the other guys cuz he already has a slot.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
hmmmm
Well, maybe Shanny had seen enough? IDK, tough call, but I still say he sticks.

McNabb's thoughts
I seem to remember he spoke positively about both Thomas and Kelly, but what would you expect him to say? “Oh those guys suck, I’d cut them today”.
by BleedingOrangeGoSU on Sep 1, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I've heard he really liked Kelly
that he actively wanted to play with the guy.
But I didn’t hear his opinions on Thomas at all.
yeah I remember him being high on Kelly
by BayAreaBullet on Sep 1, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Everyone who sees him practice and sees his work ethic is high on Kelly
But then he gets injured and can’t play any longer or at the same level. He should have been by far our best 08 pick, but if you can’t stay healthy…
You may be right,
It might have just been Kelly he was gushing about.

Hodge
What’s the story on him? Why hasn’t he played? And if he’s totally out of the picture, why didn’t they cut him? About the cuts: I would suggest that Moss, Armstrong and Galloway are in, Banks (punt returner and occasional WR) is probable, with Austin on the practice squad. That’s five, leaving one spot for Thomas and Williams (and longshot Wade) – decided by performance tomorrow night. Banks could drop out, too, if he doesn’t do well (fumbles, poor returns or shows he is too small to help at WR) – which would make things a lot easier – letting them keep both Thomas and Williams. I’d sort of hate to lose Williams because he is a solid pro, although maybe not the fastest guy out there.
on Banks...
I lie Moss, Armstrong, Galloway, Austin, DT (unless we can get value in a trade) Williams and Stoikely…..Banks on PS
That's 7 + 1 (PS)
I don’t remember much about Stokely. I’d like to put Banks on the practice squad, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense because we’d be keeping him for punt returns, and he wouldn’t return any punts on the practice squad. He wouldn’t develop as a PR, so I guess we’d just be saving him in case of an injury or somebody flopped or was traded. It seems it’s the roster or cut for BB.
geed?? maybe I should watch my typing,
Scott E, you are a bad influence…as John Lennon said,,,number 9 number 9 number 9 number 9……..
To everyone upset about the WR
Have you notices a 6’3 white gentleman playing a lot of football for the Skins in the WR position this preseason?
AHHHHH…
Not sure who you mean?
No being from the DC area I haven’t seen any games yet, so I have no clue who your talking about? Do tell.
by BleedingOrangeGoSU on Sep 1, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Bleeding - I was just answering your comment that Thomas
was probably in because he got a lot of playing time with the first team. Actually, he didn’t play WR at all in the Jets game, when the first team played the most. Not only that, he’s been listed as third string on the depth chart. Surprising, but not conclusive – there could be a lot of reasons, including that they already know what he can do, and intend to keep him for his special teams play, so why waste game time on him? But I sort of think that he better have a terrific game against AZ – like 8 catches. But that’s just a guess.
I haven't seen him on the first team at all this preseason
the only time I’ve seen him is when Grossman was out there (Buffalo and Baltimore), and like you said, not at all at NJ
SpottieOttieDopaliscious
It was the implied DWW*
infraction that clued me in.
*Dancing While White
(that was for you, Rekka! LOL!)
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Shanahan would probably like to have a 6'3" Martian playing WR for him
Or do you mean Cooley?
Cooley, ah yes.
He will lead the team is catches, yrds, and TD this year. 5 has always liked TE’s. He made Chad Lewis into a start, the guys after him could never hold onto the ball when thrown their way. Cooley will. Plus he’s already looking for him on a regular basis.

I might be the only one
But I would keep Galloway. Yes, he’s old, but he showed against the Jets he can still get separation. And with WRs, too many young guys equals too many egos. They all think they’re God’s gift to man. At least some of the older ones know to keep their mouths shut about that belief. If nothing else, keep Galloway around as a bit of veteran leadership.
When Gallaway snores and drools
it lulls the D-back to sleep – hence separation. My theory.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Is that how it works?
I thought he started into stories of “back in my day” and distracted his guy before each snap.
That will put the D-back in a trance
and is equally effective…especially when they are told it was snowing and the wind was in their face no matter which end zone they were going for and they had to play barefoot.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Whatever he does to get separation
I’ll take it. As long as it’s not Grossman throwing to him any more.
Grossman is
another form of separation altogether. Separation between the ball and the receiver, separation from our offense to their defense, separation of the ball from Rexxy’s foot through our own end zone. The variations boggle the mind.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
So, who starts?
Moss on one side, X on the other? Or when Moss is in the slot, you have X, and Y on the ends? Cooley? Armstrong?
by BleedingOrangeGoSU on Sep 1, 2010 3:29 PM EDT reply actions
So hard to say who starts.
Because I bet it will change each week depending on the opponent.
Two TE sets will be popular, obviously. But that can mean two on the line or one at WR.
Moss in the slot has usually put Thomas/Galloway/Williams on the other side with Armstrong on the same side flanker (during preseason).
Fun to see the Singleback - Big formation audibled into a Pro Formation
against the Jets. Cooley would come back to the opposite side of the RB in the backfield. Usually blocking, but I saw him run out as receiver too.
yea, meant to do a post w/ a screenshot of this
Redskins started with 7-man protections against a great Jets D…..laughable Zorn never thought of this.
Hogs Haven. On Twitter. And Facebook.
TE's
I keep forgetting about the TE’s, they are probably our best receivers outside Moss. Armstrong may end up being the only other true WR that ever sees the field.

abstinence? Like the Swinging Gate? Oh, that’s impotence.

To be fair
Zorn was a devout Christian. They think using protection is a Sin.
