Which NFL Team has the Worst Starting Wide Receivers?

There is some debate as to which team has the worst starting wide receivers in the NFL.  In a pass happy league, good WR's can be the diference between 6-10, and 10-6.

Here is a look at some of the pass-catching lacking teams:

Star-divide

Bills - The Bills boast a host of who-the hell-are-yous', and a few what-have-you-done-for-me-latelys'.  Roscoe Parish, Lee Evans and Steve Johnson(don't worry, I don't know him either) are the projected starting 3.

Broncos  -  It's not really that this WR corps is terrible; their not, it's just they are so unproven.  Eddie Royal had a breakout rookie year, them disappeared, Brandon Lloyd........need I say more, and Dymarius Thomas, well, he's a rookie.

Raiders  -  When Darius Hayward-Bay is your #1 WR, you know your in trouble.  He is joined By Johnnie Lee Higgins, and Chaz Schilens(Who???).  Well, need I say more.

Bucs  -  Their #1 WR is a 4th round draft choice out of Syracuse.  That should tell you all you need.  Williams is surrounded by Reggie Brown, who sucked with the Eagles, and should continue to suck with the Bucs, and Sammy Stroughter, the one-time Oregon State Beaver.

Rams  -  Laurent Robinson, Brandon Gibson and Keenan Burton/Mardy Gilyard are all Rookie Sam Bradford was given to work with.  Really????  Bradford had better WR's at Oklahoma.

Browns  -  Josh Cribbs, who was a college option QB is the #1 WR.  Mohamed Massaquoi and Chansi Stuckey are the other two.  Wow, all I can say is wow.

Redskins  -  Santana Moss is not what he used to be, and is probably not considered a #1 anymore.  Joey "I use a cain to walk" Galloway and Anthony Armstrong are sure not going to scare many defenses.  Better hope those TE's are worth their salt.

God, I hope we're not regarded on the same level as those other teams.

They are so brutal at WR. I’d also say we’re better than Carolina, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Chicago, Seattle and San Fran.
And really, I don’t think Philadelphia has as strong a WR corps as everyone seems to think.

by SSBlitz on Aug 31, 2010 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

That said.

I think Raiders are the worst, not considering Zach Miller.
Considering TEs, I say Bills/Broncos tie.

Broncos shot themselves in the foot

I understand that you weren’t going to be able to keep B-Marsh but why did they get rid of Tony Scheffler. That made no sense to me.

by Ratek on Sep 1, 2010 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

All the teams you mentioned have a legit #1

Carolina – Smith/Jarrett
Tennessee – Washington/Gage
Pitt – Ward(happened to have one of the best years of his career in 2009), Wallace
KC – Chambers/Bowe
Seattle – Housh/Branch
San Fran – Crabtree/Morgan/Ginn

I don’t see us being better in the WR area than any of these teams.

Chicago is the only team I’d put in with us. Hester, Knoxx and Aroushamendo are not that good.

Moss and Steve Smith are identical.

And both are definitely better than Nate Washington, Chris Chambers, Housh and Crabtree.

by SSBlitz on Sep 1, 2010 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree

I think Crabtree has a lot of potential though. And i’d take Dwayne Bowe over Chris Chambers..

Bowe is 2x the player Chambers is

and Bowe hasn’t even hit full prime yet, IMO

Bowe SHOULD be good.

He has the body type and now that Weiss is there, they should be using him similarly to Randy Moss in NE.
But to say players like Devin Thomas are worse because he’s unproven is just hypocritical. Both have potential to be stars.

No, they're not.

Steve Smith has made his living being consistent and being able to beat constant double teams.

Santana has not done either of these things.

Moss and Steve Smith are identical.

by smutsboy1 on Sep 1, 2010 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

not identical, but very similar....

Smith has has the benefit of consistency around him, basically one coach, one QB and one system throughout his career. Also Delhomme was always willing to throw it out there and let Smith just “go get it”, something Moss has not had with any consistency. Smith also had his best years with Mohammed on the other side of the field, a duo that reminded me (obviously to a much lesser degree) to a Monk/Clark kind of combination. When they traded Mohammed and Smith became the only receiving threat his numbers dropped drastically. Given the choice, right now, between the two, I would take Moss.

by MagicHat on Sep 1, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think circumstances is enough to explain the pretty big disparity in performance

stats or otherwise.

And in the three years Muhsin wasn’t in CAR, Steve Smith averaged 91/1243/9, including his bester year of his career (2005), so that part of the argument doesn’t hold water.

The players are similar in stature, and Santana has few rivals in terms of quickness and explosiveness, but when it comes to all the things it takes to be a great WR (great routes, leaping ability, hands, consistency, ability to beat double coverage consistently), Steve Smith is in another class entirely.

IMO.

by smutsboy1 on Sep 1, 2010 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Statistically, you have a point.....

but he had, statistically, his best year without Mohammed bacause he was the only guy out there to throw the ball to. Nothing against Smith, he is a great player and probably a bit tougher than Moss. He was much more of a game changing threat when they were playing together. I believe circumstances are significant. I understand that this is an example of just one game, the comeback against dallas, but the play call was basically……“OK you just run as fast as you can and I am going to throw it as far as I can”…and it worked, twice. This was a regular play call for Carolina. Just because Santana hasn’t been getting the ball doesn’t mean he hasn’t been open.

by MagicHat on Sep 1, 2010 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

All things being equal I don't think Santana is in Smith's class

Both have had to face consistent double teams over the years and Smith has done a lot more with it.

Brunell’s good years he was pretty on par with Delhomme, better in some things worse in others. From 2003-2006 our OL was pretty good. Portis was good. Gibbs was fine as OC.

I don’t see a massive difference in situations that explains Smith’s dominance in consistency.

Nowhere near?

Moss is averaging about 1000 yards per season and 6 TDs.
Smith is averaging about 1100 yards per season and 7 TDs.

Discrepancies in QB, coach can easily fluctuate those numbers in either’s favor, but just look at them play. They’re identical threats.

by SSBlitz on Sep 2, 2010 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Only difference I see

is that Moss can disappear for whole games. Remember Game 1 last year against the Giants? They got into his head early and got him frustrated. I never hear things like that about Smith. Nice stats, though.

much better jumper, and has better hands, IMO.

Yeah but that's counting Smith's rookie year when he appeared in 15 games and had 10 catches.

Clearly he wasn’t getting real PT.

Take that year out and Smith averages 86 recs per year, 1250 yards, and 7.5 TDs, which is considerably more than Moss.

Moss has only broken 70 recs 3 times, and 80 once. Smith has broken 70 five times and 80 4 times

Santana is going to be really good this year.

D-Nabb is going to make our WR better but I think that Devin is going to be a lot better with a couple games under his belt.

I want to see the first game of the season before I make any decisions about this team. This team looks very vanilla in the preason. Until I see the complex defense that D-Hall keeps talking about and the offense that we all come to expect from Kyle Shanahan, I feel like the cowgirls game is pivotal.

by Ratek on Sep 1, 2010 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. Until the Team shows they can consistently run the ball to make play action passes work, this will tend to be a

defensive team that relies on low score. Increased turnovers will help and McNabb has done well with a low interception rate during his career.

by Jefferson1935 on Sep 1, 2010 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that will be the main issue this season.....

I has been stated that it can take significant amount of time for an OL to really gell in the zone blocking system since everybody is relying on each other. Establishing a running game is paramount for success. We have a very talented QB, but he is not Peyton Manning. Ball control, TOP, making the secondary respect the run is necessary……perhaps even more importantly is having the LB’s respect the run, letting Cooley (or Davis) get that extra step. Everybody has to keep in mind what we are doing here. I like the “lets see how good we can be NOW attitude” we have desperately needed a change of culture around here for quite some time. MS deserves a couple of years of drafting and building before any judgments are made on his long term philosophy. We do have some pretty solid youth, at key positions, in the house in Orapko and Williams, and some possibles at the RB, WR, LB and Safety positions…..

by MagicHat on Sep 1, 2010 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I think I recall Rabach saying

that the OLine was out to destroy the reputation they created last year. Hopefully this is a catalyst for gelling…

I agree with you all the way.

The defense is going to be a whole lot different. I think that there are going to be two player that really benefit from the 3-4. LaRon and Brain Orakpo. The Cowboy’s game is going to be awesome.

is improving with Mike Sims Walker, Jarrett Dillard, but they have a LOT to prove even though they have some young talent

to be honest you could throw in minnesota – harvin sure, but berrian disappears at times

Sims-Walker was a beast last year.

Minny’s combo of Harvin and Berrian are a helluva lot better than the teams mentioned in the post.

While a lot of these teams don't have top flight #1 guys

Most of them still have at least one receiver worth something. The only team that is complete trash is the Rams.
Bills have Lee Evans, who is not a superstar, but he’s good, and Perish isn’t the worst on Earth.
Broncos is like you said, unproven. Eddie Royal and Demariyus Thomas should be solid.
Raiders are pretty bad, but mainly because of who they’ve chosen to start. They should be starting Louis Murphy, who has had a few pretty solid games. Shilens is unproven and oft-injured, but his combo of speed, size, and hands is a threat if he could stay healthy.
Bucs have a solid rookie corps. While you joke Mike Williams, he was a star at Syracuse before randomly quitting. He has great hands and size and is a strong possession guy while Arrelious Benn (who I was almost certain is starting as well…) keeps the theme of size going and adds a little bit of speed. They are unproven, but have good potential.
Browns at least have a playmaker in Cribbs and a possession guy in Massaquoi. Again, not great and unproven, but the potential IS there.
Redskins are similar to the Bills, we’ve got one tiny, speedy receiver, and then some guys that no one knows (and Joey Galloway).
Maybe I just know more about ALL of these teams then the Rams, but the Rams have nobody anyone has ever heard of at all.

If Avery was healthy

I would trade the Skins 1-2-3 WRs for Avery, Robinson, and Gilyard in a heartbeat

by Parks Smith on Sep 1, 2010 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

We are fortunate that

a) we have McNabb who can actually get rid of the ball and make our receivers better
b) our OLine will be better which helps the receiving corps
c) our TE’s will take pressure off of the WRs because they will demand a lot of attention

So, I guess I’m saying that while on paper our WRs don’t stack up so well based on recent performance – the potential is there to easily be much better than that.

The last two years there was literally no time for Moss to get separation and when he did it was Campbell throwing to him...

Watch for him to have a big season… A lot of the reason some of the WRs in the league fail, are because of the way plays are designed. Play making is a science. Some coaching crews are less than par at making plays that give their players ways of tricking Ds from the snap. Already I have seen some plays by this Offense that are hands down far more artistic than anything Zorn could have ever put together. Zone Blocking, a decent running game and twin TE sets give us an upper hand from the start.. Not to mention we have McNabb who can scramble for yards. These are all ways of manipulating an opposing D to do just what you want them to do… Also.. there is no game tape for our opponents to look at and study… They are basically going against us blind… This will give us at least a 6 game advantage in unpredictability…
