Mike Wise goes DOWN!

Rightfully so...

The Washington Post has suspended veteran sports columnist Mike Wise for publishing fabricated information on Twitter. He announced the one-month suspension on his radio show Tuesday.

Wise claimed Monday that he wanted to prove a point about how reporters will run stories in today's fast-moving news environment without  independently verifying the information. So Wise tweeted that Pittsburgh Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger, who has been accused of sexually assaulting a Georgia college student, would get a five-game suspension. Of course, since Wise is a respected sportswriter, other news outlets went with the apparent scoop and cited his reporting.

Thats not all he tweeted, a-hole

At least he didn't claim he

was just following orders…. Seriously, I think he was joking around a little bit and things got carried away. It does illustrate a problem with how fast news travels these days – very little time to independently check out stories and have factual confirmation.

Well the Mike Wise guide to reporting never involved checking out stories or facts anyways

It was all about getting next to a large sports personality and turning his column over to them so they can air beefs(Lavar) or do damage control(Gil) without a single shred of reporting. Not to mention the weird/lame stuff like vaguely confessing to adultery after the Tiger Woods revelations or going to Barry Farms and writing a “Gee Whiz I’m the only white person here and some people are smoking weed” article.

It wasn't simple joking around

He was trying to make a point. A point that’s very inaccurate, and he failed even at that.

How was his point inaccurate?

He said that people will post stories based on whatever they see on social media without ever double-checking the facts. And that’s what happened. Hogs Haven sure fell for it.

Actually he was wrong

He thought other media would run with the story. They didn’t and when they did they credited him and followed proper journalistic procedure. All that got reported was that “Mike Wise said …..”, not other people reporting the story as fact like he intended. Sports Journalism World 1 Mike Wise 0.

I warmed up a little to Wise

after he started writing articles somewhat supportive or friendly or at least fair to Albert Haynesworth. But at the same time, he possibly lost a little of his journalistic integrity (McNabb, Rothlisberger). Sort of odd. Maybe as he got more and more involved in show business, making and analyzing the news, he forgot that he was supposed to be a reporter.

Wise

He’s always been good to us. I sat in his radio show at the Super Bowl…and he mentions HH on the air frequently and even in his articles. Hard for me to hate on the guy given I know the guy and his intentions…he was just trying to make some noise and didn’t take twitter seriously (obviously a big mistake)…he rarely tweeted before all this.

Once the details of Mariotti come out this will all be forgotten.

Hogs Haven. On Twitter. And Facebook.

Wise - yes

It’s not a terrible crime, just a little slip. Forgive the guy.

I think the important thing is that his theory was proven wrong

I don’t care as much about his methods.
