Redskins Park Updates: Malcolm Kelly to IR; Portis in Full Practices

I'll update this thread with the official cuts, which should be around 4pm. We can make this an open thread for all the action today.

    • John Keim has reported Lendy Holmes has been cut. Also cut are Edwin Williams, Hall Davis, and LS James Dearth
    • Malcolm Kelly to the IR (Shanahan likes his work ethic). This means the Redskins only have to cut 4 players today.
    • Portis had a full practice today but will not play versus AZ
    • Rex will start against Cardinals (for a very short time)
    • Selvish Capers with 3rd team as Left Guard
    • Ryan Torain will start against Cardinals
    • Willie Parker did not practice Monday, but will play versus Cards

Shanahan: Not putting Kelly on the Active/PUP list before training camp is a regret. He let Kelly practice b/c MK said he could.

is it a regret because had he put him on PUP he could have played him when he got better?

by Rekka on Aug 31, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

It's a regret...

If he put him on PUP b4 training camp…MK would have sat all camp…then we would have activated him. Since he then got hurt, we could put him on reserve PUP which means he has 6 weeks to heal then we can decide to activate or cut…like what the Pats did w/ Wes Welker.

so, since we didn't put him on reserve PUP

we essentially give him a year to heal and decide whether to keep or cut, as opposed to only giving him 6 weeks?

If he can't heal in a year..

.. he is done, and not just as a Redskin.

…like what the Pats did w/ Wes Welker.

When did this happen? He’s been playing all preseason.

by VA_Skin on Aug 31, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

July 27th

Recovering wide receiver Wes Welker was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list by the Patriots on Tuesday.
Welker, whose recovery from February surgery to repair a torn left ACL has been on schedule, can come off the list at any time.

by bigrm18 on Aug 31, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

That was the active/PUP list. It looks like he is good to go for my fantasy team the regular season though.

Also...

I’m doing a phone interview with Terrence Austin this afternoon…if you have any questions you want me to ask…comment below this.

Question

How do you or the coaches envision your role in the offense?

by worldwidewes on Aug 31, 2010 1:53 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Has he been

bulking up more to handle a possibly increased role in the passing game?

Questions:

Does he feel like he has had ample opportunities thus far to showcase his skills? Can we expect to see a bit more of him in the Cardinals game?

I honestly don’t remember too many standout moments for him from the previous 3 games. I wish the WR’s who have a reserved roster spot would sit this one out so we can see more of the guys fighting to make the final cut.

Are you sure you were watching the games?

by Parks Smith on Aug 31, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

yea

he actually made more noise as a receiver than a return man if I recall correctly

SpottieOttieDopaliscious

by Rekka on Aug 31, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

yea...he showed some YAC skills on a couple plays.

I def plan on asking why he never took a single PR or KR to the house in college…he had almost 200 total touches in ST.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Aug 31, 2010 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

He is slow and not explosive

Pretty Simple. I guess he hasn’t shown much ability to get deep as a WR in camp/practice either. He’s basically a poor mans Randle El. Still kinda like him though he’s shifty and a decent route runner. Like Banks better though.

by BayAreaBullet on Aug 31, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup..

I’ve just been blinded by Anthony Armstrong. He’s been there on almost every special teams tackle and he’s been sure-handed as a WR. I’m not saying Austin hasn’t made some plays, but he just hasn’t made the same impression on me.

Did he have a couple of nice catches in the Jets game down the seam from Beck? Or am I thinking of someone else? Clearly my man-crush for Armstrong has affected my vision.

by willster on Aug 31, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

That seems right for a 12 team league

QB in the first round, Grant in the 2nd. WRs are pretty weak.

portis & brown are falling like crazy in all drafts (rightfully so)

Our league commissioner is a weird bird

Our starting lineup is 3 WR and 2 RB, not a flex spot..

We usually do

2 RB’s, 2 WR’s and a flex slot where you can play a receiver or running back

Sure, but the two types of leagues are by far the two most common

by worldwidewes on Aug 31, 2010 2:07 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

You think we keep Keiland

on PS, or just let him go. I really would like him to get on the 53 but I don’t see Shanny going into the season with Portis and 2 new guys.

SpottieOttieDopaliscious

by Rekka on Aug 31, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he's been the second best RB so far this preseason

I think we keep 4 RB’s anyways. I think it will be CP, LJ and Williams.

by BayAreaBullet on Aug 31, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Really hope we don't drop him

He’s no Portis, but he found extra yards on some plays where Parker would likely just get stuffed. I imagine the final RB roster will be Portis, LJ, and Torain, with Williams on PS.

by willster on Aug 31, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Keiland is a keeper

He can play tailback and fullback (a la Mike Anderson). I think the coaching staff is high on him.

by BAFGA on Aug 31, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think so.

I think you keep him for now and use him for trade bait. There are a couple teams out there that are getting pretty thin at RB (Denver, Houston) and might be willing to part with a conditional late round pick for someone like Parker who would take minimal work to get working on the field. Put Williams on the practice squad for now, go into the Dallas game Portis and Johnson/Torain, don’t even activate Parker on the gameday list, and give it a week or two and see if something comes up.

by tuckwell on Aug 31, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Trade bait?

Seriously? Why pay him a roster bonus just to keep him around in case someone else wants him? Who would give up a pick when they could easily go find a 6th or 7th round talent on a practice squad somewhere?

by TerroristFistJab on Aug 31, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed...

the NFL isn’t like most other sports – veteran contracts (those without significant bonuses in a salary-capped season, that is) are so easy to flush that it is silly to entertain keeping a player on the 54 man (which we stretched to the limit last year, remember?) unless you see him providing value on your team. Parker was signed to provide depth through the pre-season. He has done that much. Now he needs to pack his bags and hit the FA trail.

Minnesota most of not thought much of Mitchell, especially given their WR situation or he could be a casualty of Farve being a diva and bringing in walker.

sorry!yeah i was a little suprised by it but i guess shanahan dint see that much potential for him.
i really hope they keep 6 WR

5.Banks primarily for KR’s
6Austin,i see potential in the guy and coming out of ucla as the all time yards record holder isnt for nothing, guy can defintly put in work and catch in traffic which is a plus!

Cant belive they cut Hall Davis

by wizardsfan1 on Aug 31, 2010 4:39 PM EDT reply actions

Why?

I’m guessing you’ve never seen him play and know absolutely nothing about him, like the rest of us. I’ll take the draft pick..

by Parks Smith on Aug 31, 2010 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

But...

But didn’t we give a draft pick for Davis? I know we got a draft pick for Morris… Won’t they just cancel each other out if they end up being in the same round?

by BAFGA on Aug 31, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

We traded a conditional pick/Morris for a conditional pick/Davis

I don’t get your “But”, if they do cancel each other out then who cares? Why does it matter if its pick for pick, or morris for davis, or morris for pick?

by Parks Smith on Aug 31, 2010 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Does anyone know what the terms of the conditional picks are?

I feel like we shouldn’t give the rams a pick at all, especially considering he was on our team for maybe 12 hours.

"You're fucking out!"

by travisjh86 on Aug 31, 2010 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps we won't have to give them a pick

maybe the “condition” was based on whether or not he makes our roster.

by CarverM on Aug 31, 2010 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s what I was expecting, I guess we shouldn’t get our hopes up on getting anything for Morris either.

Chalk that one up as a loss

"You're fucking out!"

by travisjh86 on Aug 31, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I was only responding to the fact you said you would take the pick. I don’t think we have a net gain of a pick in the Davis/Morris deal. That’s all I’m saying.

by BAFGA on Aug 31, 2010 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Capers

seems to be getting tried out at every position except the one he excelled at in college (RT). They must be pretty confident in Heyer as a backup RT.

by VA_Skin on Aug 31, 2010 5:10 PM EDT reply actions

I was thinking the same thing, don’t understand why he wouldn’t be at least given a shot at RT though. It seems to me that with the injury questions of Brown and Heyer’s performances the past couple seasons they would at least see what they had in him at his college position…

But then again, what the hell do I know.

So the first five departures (from those on board last week) were Dearth, Holmes,
E Williams, Morris and Kelly. But 22 cuts left to go.

Hard not to think that this latest hamstring injury could've been somewhat induced.

“Hey Malcolm, run a few routes. You’re hamstring feel more sore, ya, you’re right, we’d better put you on the IR to make this decision a lot easier”

by SSBlitz on Aug 31, 2010 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

Several reportes have eluded to something musterious about the injury

Not sure if that means they are exagerating it or if that means he’s been more seriously hurt than we know.
