Daily Slop: Sensabaugh Likely Out for Redskins Opener; Sally Jenkins Goes Off

D.C. Sports Bog - Goodbye to Zack Bolno, for now
Nice farewell recap to a fantastic Redskins PR man. It's still unknown why he was fired but it was not Haynesworth related it was reported. Zack gave us our first credential in May of 2009 to OTAs when we were nobodies. Majority of the NFL teams flat out do not do that, so we'll always be grateful for Zack trusting and respecting Ken and myself.

MUST READ >>> Sally Jenkins - Albert Haynesworth has failed every test issued by Mike Shanahan
Who do you think is going to win the contest of wills between Albert Haynesworth and Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan? The guy who once played a football game with a ruptured kidney and didn't go to the hospital until he filled a sink with vomit three times and urinated bright red blood or Haynesworth...

On the Sally Jenkins writeup...

I agree with everything she said except for this:

It’s not too late for Haynesworth to become the responsible, self-determined, durable professional the Redskins need him to be.

I just don’t see this guy falling in line. He’s already been paid a small fortune. He has zero motivation at this point. It’s already been shown that he didn’t do all the necessary training in the offseason on his own, and he already said he won’t attend OTA’s with the team next year (assuming there is a next year) The first chance we get, we need to cut this turd loose.

Sally Jenkins

She should be fired. Tantrum? Did she watch the video? That was a tantrum? I’d say AH was quite restrained.

Why is she glorifying Shanahan playing a football game with a ruptured kidney? That’s just stupid. The conclusion to draw from that is not that Shanahan is tough, but that he’s stupid. It’s not worth killing yourself over a sport.

Why is Jenkins not satisfied with what Albert actually said? She adds her own fake quote, words she is putting in his mouth, because his actual behavior in this case was not really bad enough to support her rant. Albert didn’t say he was special. He said he was a veteran. Not controversial enough, I guess. You can still take issue with AH’s suggestion that he should start because he’s a veteran, but Jenkins apparently didn’t find that juicy enough.

As for the argument that he should have “figured out how to hydrate”, it’s possible to get dehydrated no matter how much liquids you take in. Dehydration does not necessarily mean you didn’t drink water all day. It might even mean you were working too hard that particular day.

Just like so many in the media, and so many of the blog comments we’re seeing lately, Jenkins comes across as a big baby, a childish name-caller is who more interested in beating up on an easy target than writing something thoughtful.

Just to check in here ...

Are you having a go at the messenger here, or are you saying that AH is a reasonable, responsible, committed team member? I do agree that the media (and if you think Jenkins’s take was bad, try listening to 106.7 or 980) are having a field day pouring gasoline on a smouldering fire.

That said, as time goes by it is becoming tougher for me to defend Albert on his own merits. I certainly agree with you about the hydration issues being serious, but I’m very, very tired of Haynesworth opening his mouth. After a certain point, you just want to say to AH: shut up and play. Or shut up and don’t play. But please, shut up!

I like to look at it as taking a break from the Favre-thon coverage.

Haha I think people stopped paying attention to Favre the second time he un-retired

I would never wish injury on him (or any player for that matter…) because he’s a great player but still, I wish something would just drive him away from the game for good.

I'm back. YAY SUMMER!

My bold prediction is that the old gunslinger shows up this year and when he retires, again, at the end of the year, it’ll be forever.

I don't know what to expect anymore

All these sportswriters are predicting a disastrous year for Minnesota and Favre so maybe that will drive him away. But if they do well, he’ll be back.

I'm back. YAY SUMMER!

by DCO'sfan on Aug 23, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, who can figure it out?

I don’t know about disastrous… that team has some supremely talented individuals and a pretty good defense to lean on, but I think it’ll be pretty hard for him to live up to last years anomalous stats. Even if he reverts to form he’s better than Jackson, and even with Jackson the Vikings could be a playoff team.

I think he’ll have a good, but not great year; the Vikings will lose in the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs; Childress will be on the hot seat; and ownership will find themselves in the same situation the Favre experiment keeps them from addressing: no QB of merit, a coach they may need to replace, and a closing window of opportunity to win with Peterson.

But, I may as well be reading tea leaves for all of my success at predicting the NFL.

Albert is far from perfect. What bothers me about Jenkins’ piece is that she is just piling on and not really addressing what’s wrong with AH. Sure, there are things about AH that one can criticize. I don’t understand her comment about AH running his mouth, nor do I understand yours. AH has not uttered many words this camp. Granted, that’s due in large part to PR handlers… but still, he has not been a motor mouth, and was not really that expansive in his interview saturday. I just think criticisms should be addressed at specific things that have a real basis, rather than just random posturing like we see in Jenkins’ piece. Portis got a reasonable amount of criticism for not taking part in some team activities in the past, but it was never this mean-spirited and relentless. This is like Lord of the Flies at times, with AH.

by hsoup on Aug 23, 2010 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d say AH was quite restrained.

Restraint would be not deflecting personal failings onto others and publicly disparaging your team.

Jenkins Haynesworth comes across as a big baby, a childish name-caller is who more interested in beating up on an easy target making excuses than writing something thoughtful accepting personal responsibility.

Fixed.

Thanks for that.

I would like to agree with hsoup, but as long as AH continues to act like a spoiled 3 yr-old and only put in a half-assed effort at practice and on the field, AH is the problem and Jenkins can report it any way she likes.

by Scott E on Aug 23, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

AH didn’t publicly disparage his team generally. He was clearly talking specifically about his coach. Is that good? No. But coaches have to be held to a higher standard, and that’s the kind of comment you are going to get from a player when, as a coach, you say sarcastic things in the media about your players’ ailments. AH has his failings, and did not look good in that interview, to be sure. But I saw it coming. As soon as I heard what Shanahan said in the middle of the week, and how he said it, I knew we were in for more of this.

by hsoup on Aug 23, 2010 9:44 AM EDT reply actions

There is no way, in my mind,

that Shanny is the bad guy here. Al needs to pony up and take responsibility for himself and do his job.

I just hope Snyder learns a f-cking lesson from this

There are very real risks when you give out massive contracts to super star players.

It’s never as simple as “you can add talent without giving up anything but money so you should do it”.

Buying huge-ticket players like this is not how you build a TEAM. And it will always run a big risk of one disaster or another.

I hope Snyder learned something from this as well

But I more importantly hope we’re at a point where it doesn’t make a huge difference whether or not Snyder learned anything, since he’ll hopefully be as far away from the football decisions as possible. It seems as if we’re going in that direction thus far, but only time will tell.

by bigrm18 on Aug 23, 2010 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

It wasn't the size of the deal that bothers me

but that so much was put out to him guaranteed and up front with little or no incentives tied to it. So he’s got his money and can now (apparently) just go through the motions as a football player. How this could have happened when he was already known for this very behavior is beyond me.

by Scott E on Aug 23, 2010 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

That's how most FA contracts are though.

Al’s was worse than most, but few have serious incentives unless there are unique concerns (injuries or whatnot). And most have a lot of up front money (just not as much as Al’s).

My point is that there are a lot of risks when you bring in most of your serious talent through FA. Risks that a lot of fans tend to forget.

I'm beginning to feel that AH

was a total mistake. Maybe he’ll play himself back into good graces, but now I just don’t see it happening (after going back and forth and feeling jerked around pretty much all year now). But many of our FA pick ups this year seem to be a good deal, especially since you cannot rebuild a team in one year via the draft.

Sucks about Zack Bolno.

I had the pleasure of meeting him a few years ago and was a stellar guy, I owe him a lot. By all accounts he was also an excellent PR man. Zack will land on his feet.

Go register. Or else.

Anyone know who

actually did the firing – Allen, Snyder?

we may never know

Skins said ‘We don’t discuss internal matters with the media" and Bolno said “You have to talk to them.”

Seems kinda odd

Considering how virtually every single person that has spoke about his firing has said absolutely nothing but positive words about him. I’m really curious as to what caused it.

Didn't he reject their initial offer?

I wonder what changed his mind this time? Did the Bears sweeten their offer or something?

by bigrm18 on Aug 23, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

must of

Initial offer had $0 guaranteed I believe.

Good for Todd

The first offer was no guarantee at all, and his agent said they could have cut him in a week, and Todd didn’t want to be used. So the Bears had to make it worth his while. Cutler and Collins – nice.
