What All-Time Redskin Would You Want on the 2010 Roster?
On the Metro to work today some dude who is allergic to showers and air-conditioning frickin sat on my newspaper, so I drifted off to better things like the question, "What all-time Redskin would I add to the 2010 roster if I could?" Some obvious answers pop to mind like Sean Taylor, Art Monk, and Darrell Green...all desperate holes needs on Shanahan's first squad. Number 21 is pretty much my answer for most thing Redskins, so I decided to go a different route.
Picking a player first brings up a prior debate...do you go the Vinny Cerrato route and simply add the best player, or do you go the sane route and add a Redskin that fills a major hole? Last year this time I would have been lobbying for Joe Jacoby, Russ Grimm, Jim Lachey, or Chip Lohmiller.
Since Shanny has the OL, QB, and kicking situation stable again, I decided to focus on WR and ST.
To me, it really came down to Charley Taylor and Brian Mitchell. Charley of course was 6'3, 210 lbs and is the exact mold of WRs that Shanahan loves of speed, agility, and size. His career stats are mind-boggling and there's no doubt he would put up career numbers with Shanahan and McNabb at the helm (That visual of Billy Kilmer hitting Charley Taylor in stride on that long bomb down the right side-line is what I'd like to see all year).

During his decade with the Redskins, Brian Mitchell had a punt return average of 11.0 yds and kick return average of 22.8 yds. That's pretty much double the yards of what we had with Randle El. I'll make it a future post to research, but the Redskins had to have been bottom 5 in the NFL last year in worst starting field position.
For his career, BMitch had 9 punt returns TDs and 4 career KR touchdowns. In 1994, he averaged 25.5 yards per KR and a whopping 14.1 per PR. Plus, you add in his back-field and receiving skills...he makes for a huge addition to this squad. The fact he also could be the emergency Quarterback means the Redskins could carry 2 QBs and use the extra roster spot to add another aging Defensive Lineman! SWEET!

Well, it's a doozy. I was quick to take BMitch has my final answer, but it's clear Shanahan has major concerns at WR. None of the Redskins current RBs instill fear in opposing defensive coordinators, and of course, what helps the running game? The passing game. Charley Taylor...suit it up. You're going in.
Hard thoughts: Sammy Baugh, Dave Butz, Darrell Green, and Ethan Albright.

Heart wrenching
I’d want him back too. A real FS would make me feel a lot better about our D. I don’t like to overly hate on LaRon but we all know the story.

Correction
BMitch had 9 career punt returns and 4 career kick returns.
Was that supposed to be for touchdowns?
Also, put me down for Darrell Green. I think Shanny is gonna kickstart the offense, and London and company will lock down the run defense. I want a shutdown corner taking out the #1 receiving threat.
Haynesworthless
Bryan Mitchell's all purpose yardage stats.
His all purpose yard stats were the best if not one of the best in Redskins history.
Together with Taylor, Art Monk is also one of the all time favorites at receiver.

Give me Sammy Baugh
Not only was he a more than capable quarterback, but he was a league-leading cornerback and record-setting punter. I will let slide the fact that the league has moved a little since he last suited up. He was a leader in every sense of the word and I choose to believe he could add something to this team. I would be happy to bench Donovan in favor of Sammy.
He always gets forgotten when we talk about all-time greats I think. Sure, #21, Art, Charley Taylor and Bobby Mitchell would all be major upgrades, but Slingin’ Sammy is the ORIGINAL BADASS.
I would love to see him wreck shop in a Redskins uniform. I think he would be unstoppable under center.
Vinny Cerrato would never have appreciated Sammy Baugh enough to bring him in.
Not to mention Sammy would have knocked him out with one punch if they were ever in the same room.

Sammy Baugh was...
Petyon Manning, Troy Palamalu and Reggie Roby all in one. Every game. He revolutionized the game.We just forget because he played 60 years ago. He was truely an amazing player!
That is the uniform set we need to permanently switch to...
That is the uniform set from the Giants game some years back that they came back and beat us on a goaline stop. We just need to switch from the usual and it will be a sign of a new beginning.
Lobby for Gary Clark
For this debate, I’m going with the position I think has the biggest need in 2010 – WR. With that said, I’d add Gary Clark. Always been a fan of his from the Posse days and couldn’t ignore his ability to stretch the field and make those game breaking plays. McNabb to Clark would be a sight to see.
Nah, gotta be Monk
Clark is Moss+. I love Clark, but Monk’s the guy. Would be great to have that big possession receiver in the McCaffrey mold. Art is McCaffrey times 10!
I've gotta take Taylor (Charley) over Monk....
although it is very close, they are two of my all-time favorite Redskins. The overall question is tough one. Butz would be beautiful anyway, but especially considering the AH situation. A great argument for Darryl Green as well….and I would be hard pressed to vote against Slingin Sammy in any situation. Really a coin flip for me between C. Taylor and Green.

No takers for Shawn Suisham?
but seriously, I think a ball hawk like Sean Taylor in this defense would be insane. Orakpo, Fletcher, and two ball hawking DB’s in Hall and Taylor would be sick, plus when D-Hall misses tackles we would all know what was comming accross the field like a missil to clean up the mess…
I miss that so much
missed tackle now = touchdown
agreed
That would be nice. In trying to come down to an answer on this one I basically used the bracket system C. Taylor vs Monk really could have went either way, same with S Taylor and Green. Hard to say no to any of those guys.
Darrell Green
A shut down corner is more valuable to me than a FS or a WR and nobody had a better work ethic and attitude than Green.
+1 he's definatly my all time favorite skin
but i think the team we have now would benefit more from a FS than a shut down corner
+1
He’d be such a defensive boost both on the field and in the locker room…and could double with PR duties too…
Green's punt return against the Bears.
Green was too valuable to use as a punt returner, but when he was needed he sure got it done.

that return...
and, of course, Riggo’s 4th down TD in the SB are two of the all time classic highlights from that era of Redskins football
Wow!
CT with 1000+ yds and 12 TDs in a 14 game schedule in 1966. I didn’t know you could make those kinds of numbers back then. Also, refresh my memory…why did we get rid of B-Mitch again? Excellent point on his backup QB role. Sorry Cult of Colt fans. Or do we get rid of Sexxy Rexxy?
I’m leaning to Joe Jacoby, Rt 66 as one pick on O. I’d also love to have Riggo back in the backfield, too.
I like the thinking that we need to pick someone up on D and my first thoughts are Ken Houston, Chris Hamburger(perfect OLB in the 3-4, IMO), and Darrell Green (ST21 is also an obvious choice). I’m also thinking Dexter Manley would be awesome opposite The Rak in a 3-4. He played DE, but wasn’t particularly big – just fast and mean.
Ultimately, this team needs someone with character who can play multiple positions. This is a bit of a stretch, but I really think we could use a guy like Raven Caldwell. OLB and ST missile of destruction. I’ll never forget watching him play ST in the last pre-season game of what would become his rookie year. There were, as usual, 3-4 players on the bubble to make the team. Following a kickoff, Raven somehow lost his helmet yet still made the tackle without it. Gibbs later said that was the play that made the decision for him as to who to cut and who to bring into the fold.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
that's great

never too many good linemen
If I could add any redskins in their prime it would either be Dave Butz or Jim Lachey. Thelines are improved but still have a long way to go. It all starts up front with the big guys.

Waaaaaay back
Slingin’ Sammy Baugh! That dude could do everything and was awesome at them all!
I would take Darrell Green.
He was the frigin man. My childhood hero.

different thought
How about Stephen Davis? def a workhorse running back n jst imagine how mcnabb would work if he had a back like tht….and it would take pressure off tha defense n they wouldnt have 2 be on the field 4ever….
