August and September NFL Transactions
The months of August and September are two of the busiest times in the NFL for transactions. About 1,100 transactions will occur. The timing of the 2010 major events will be almost identical to those in 2009.
NFL Transactions Report will show the individual players involved in these transactions.
Waiver wireAug. 31, 2010: Roster cutdown to maximum of 75 players.
Sept. 1, 2009 - Roster cutdown to maximum of 75 players
Sept. 4, 2010: Roster cutdown to maximum of 53 players
Sept. 5, 2009 - Roster cutdown to maximum of 53 players
The staged cut downs will result in about 832 players that the Skins have not seen much of recently except in preseason games. Some of those have to be interesting. In just a short review of the 2009 transactions during this period, there were some 2008 starters of more than 10 games. Of course they could be like Heyer. Practice squads will take 256 of these free agents. Any free agents acquired after August 31st or Sept 4th will require moves to reduce the roster to limits at that time. In addition there will be moves to injured reserve status as well as a minor number of trades.
Allen and other player personnel will need to be on alert. This could be a great time to acquire some depth and youth. The only problem is that any players acquired at that point will not know the play book. Yet for better quality in depth that is not the worst route for a team trying to rebuild. Some other players on the 53-man roster would need to be moved to the practice squad if vets are acquired.
