Trent Williams In, Mike Williams Out

Def a huge hit to our o-line depth with big Mike being out for the year and i would guess his career.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/mike-williams-released-by-wash.html

"Mike is going to have this year off," Shanahan said. "He'll be released. Any time you're on the blood thinner you can't compete. Mike will be off this season and hopefully in six months he'll take a physical and he'll be able to play. I had a good conversation with Mike today, he's going to live in the area, he is going to try to keep in great shape, he wants to keep playing football and hopefully he'll be able to."

Hopefully though the silver lining is Allen will be forced to reach out and sign/trade another servicable offensive lineman.

Get well big Mike! Maybe Haynesworth can step up and play offensive guard.

I agree with the HH posters that think the Skins need better depth at many positions.

There are three starters on the offensive line that are replacement quality (or less), but the need for strengthening the RG
position is the greatest need in the OL. There may be some possibilities in August and September, but to integrate another player as a immediate starter on the OL is not likely. Yet if the right guy could be acquired, he could start before mid-season if not sooner – something better than last seasons Levi Jones patch. Actually Jones would not be a bad addition for depth.

No Haynesworth at RG

Sorrry but Fat Albert wouldn’t want to play RG. RG’s don’t get the star power adulation which is all the Fat one cares about.

You guys are overlooking some players here

Hicks – Starter
Reinhardt – I went back and watched the few game he played in, and he actually looked pretty good when healthy.
Cook – Kid can play either G spot, and also C
Capers – I am still under the impression he could be a good fit at G in the zone blocking scheme. I saw him play quite a bit in college, and was always impressed with his atheletic ability on pulls around the edge, traps, and getting to the second level after the backers.

Maybe it wouldn’t be a bad move by the coaches to give Heyer a shot at RG. He is a pretty effective run blocker. Where he struggles is playing against better atheletes in space. At G, he wouldn’t have to worry about this as much.

Not to mention we also have Licht, who is versatile enough to back-up at both C and G.

Process of elimination

The team now has 13 OL. They will probably keep 10. At this point T. Williams, Dockery, Rabach, Hicks, and Brown look like the starters. I don’t think Robinson is actually #2 on the LT of the depth chart, but he might know the plays better so he might have been with the 1st unit just to make things run smoother. E. Williams, Oldenburg, and Montgomery are the cuts IMO. It is really to early to say who the #2 backups are out of the remaining five, but it is good that most of them can play more than one OL position.
I am optimistic that more OL depth will happen in August or September. Maybe one of the OL will be on the practice squad.

Most of the other 31 teams have 10 to 14 OL now, but it won’t stay that way.

Interesting viewpoint, and you could be right. I had just assumed that Capers and Cook weren’t ready yet, and Rinehart wasn’t good enough. But you know linemen better than I do. I suggested obtaining a starting RG to free up Hicks to back up everywhere else. If we can’t get someone, and needed Hicks elsewhere, I guess they’d have to play Rinehart at RG – and some on HH think he’s “adequate” or “average” at best, OK as a backup, but a little weak as a starter. Even Hicks is probably only “average”. So it seems that we would like to upgrade RG if we can. The whole center – LG, C, RG – is not particularly potent – probably below average for the NFL. Your idea on Heyer is interesting – he is big and strong. And when can we expect Capers and Cook to be ready to play?

Good point Donnio

Thing with Heyer is, he could step in and play right away at G, especially since we use the zone blocking scheme. His transition should be seamless. On the othert hand, if we tried to move a G to the T position, thats where the learning curve could be more difficult.

As to when the younger guys could be ready, It will tell come 3rd or 4th week of camp. As far as I know, both Cook and Capers have been with the team since they got drafted, so hopefully they are up to speed on some of the tech. and plays by now. Strength is my major concern for Capers.

Guards (continued)

Heyer did fairly well at run blocking in 2009 if the Football Outsiders info is reflective of his blocking at RT. The topic of moving Heyer to guard has been raised on a few occasions, once by Kevin and once by myself. Carver argued against this kind of move based on Heyer’s body type, i.e., too long of a body.

Capers is a guard possibility. As Tiller said, “Capers – I am still under the impression he could be a good fit at G in the zone blocking scheme. I saw him play quite a bit in college, and was always impressed with his atheletic ability on pulls around the edge, traps, and getting to the second level after the backers.” Tiller also said that Capers needs to gain strength. He recently said that his weight was up to 317 lbs. from 308. Hopefully his weight gain is muscle mass. Capers had about the 4th fastest 10 yard time at the Combines which means he has speed where the game is played
for offensive linemen.

I thought T. Williams had put some weight on the gut since the Combines. He was one of the few with a 10 yard time faster than Capers (1.70 vs. 1.74) Bruce Campbell’s time was also 1.70. Veldheer’s time was 1.72. Rinehart did not compare favorably to Veldheer in the pre-draft info, but I agree that Rinehart was making progress before he broke his leg. Robinson also played some guard in college, but he is also one of the few OLs under 300 lbs.

I was responding to Tiller’s post. I also agree with Jefferson’s posts.
