No Friday Camp Thread What Gives?

Ken and Kev are slackin on their Mackin... Just Kidding i'm sure they're at camp taking copius amount of notes.

UPDATE!!! It seems Kev and Ken have decided Love (Kevin's at a wedding) and Property (Ken is dealing with some unexpected home problem) is more important than football! or atleast training camp... common guys everyone is down because of the whole Haynesworth debaucle but this is what we've been anticipating all offseason! I'm sure the bride and groom would understand if you rolled in a tv & laptop during the ceremony to give us updates on what's happening infact some of the guests would probably appreciate it!

for those of us stuck in the office without updates I thought i'd copy and paste some twitter updates to get the thread started and i'll update when I can.

Star-divide

Big news - Haynesworth Fails a second conditioning test... I think I speak for all of us when i say Ugh....

-Trent Williams --- Signed, Sealed, Delivered! I think i read it was 60 mil, 30 some gauranteed...

Matt Terl tweeted - With the weather better - great, actually - the passing game already looks much crisper even in drills.

Here's to a good day of camp! I'll update when I can..

retweet by Terl - Lorenzo Alexander is getting good pressure in his new role as OLB

That's exciting, i really hope he nails down the starting job opposite of ORakpo

HomerMcFanboy - Fred Davis gets the crowd fired up with an off-balanced catch on McNabb pass. Davis and Larry Johnson continue to shine.

redskinsblog - Brandon Banks, Terrence Austin, Bobby Wade, Santana Moss, DHall, Phillip Buchanon all catching punts

HomerMcFanboy - Justin Tryon and Kevin Barnes get tangled up. Barnes was very slow getting up. #Redskins

HomerMcFanboy - When Willie Parker is seeking employment next month, you can thank/blame Ryan Torain. #Redskins

HomerMcFanboy McNabb makes something out of nothing on a broken play. Austin catches it on sideline, cuts back in and was gone.

NEVER SAY NEVER

Who’d have think it? I’m now actually feeling kinda sorry for Albert. From what I’ve read today, even the other players are saying that none of them could pass that 300 yard running test that AH has failed twice….

Maybe it’s time to “pass” Albie on this “fitness test” and let him start playing football.

He brought it on himself

Shanahan may feel like he has no choice but to show everybody who wears the pants.

the last thing Albert needs in anyone feeling sorry for him. they will “pass” him soon enough. All the other guys who’ve been around have shown that they are in sufficient shape to play football.

you know how they’ve shown that? by showing the fuck up when they were supposed to. you fuck around, you get fucked with.

also, let’s not go around feeling sorry for any individual on the planet with tens of millions of dollars unless they have a family member in the process of dying or some other such terrible situation

So how does the battle of the titans end?

I think his teammates, his fellow linemen should get out there and do the sprints with him and see if he’s in worse, as good or better shape then they are. That and that alone would show Shanahan that the team has welcomed him back and that he can play with them.

If his teammates don’t step up, I dunno how many more tests Shanny will make him fail…

by travisjh86 on Jul 30, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Mike Williams has great strength and size for guard, and his lack of speed isn’t a big deal there. He could have been a very good guard. While Hicks should lock it down fine, I definitely think he doesn’t have nearly the strength and size that Williams would have brought.

by BigOLinemen on Jul 30, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Why?

He’s average at best, probably worse than that (IMO). He was a back up who slow and lumbering and very ill-suited to Shanahan’s blocking scheme.

I feel bad for him, and he’d be a solid back up, but it’s not big loss.

"By far the worst performers on the team are in the front office." – Sally Jenkins

by smutsboy1 on Jul 30, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, he’s average at best. Hopefully one of our younger guys steals the starting spot from the career backup/journey man Artis Hicks. Hicks would be great in spot duty, as he did for the Vikings and Eagles, but we need something more than mediocre.

by travisjh86 on Jul 30, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Right Guard

Right – with BMW gone, we really could use a quality starting RG, so Hicks can back up the other positions. I wonder if Allen has any hopes on that?

by Donnio1234 on Jul 30, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if BMW was here, we still needed a quality starting RG. In my opinion at least…

I didn’t see anything out of him last year that said “let’s start him at RG.” I don’t know if they are going to make any more moves on this o-line but I have a feeling they are going to stick with what they have for now, barring injuries.

by travisjh86 on Jul 30, 2010 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't expect anything more than what we got last year

because he just couldn’t possibly be in football shape after losing all that weight. He must have felt he was playing in someone else’s body. I bet he would have been much better this year, a quality starter. But we’ll never know.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Jul 30, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I think he played well as a guard last year

And he can get some push up the middle. Dockery and Rabach don’t get any push and aren’t much in the run game. T.Williams was a poor run blocker in college. Hicks is a career backup and not much(though I like his versatility as a backup). Since our 3 RB’s were the three worst in the league running between the tackles last year so I’d like to give them some help. Plus I think he moved just fine as a Guard.

by BayAreaBullet on Jul 30, 2010 12:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Personally I thought he was slow at guard, and last year’s scheme didn’t require him to be nearly as agile as he’d have to be under Shanny.

If Shanny was high on him you know he had something going. I’d still like to have him out there for short yardage with LJ in the backfield.

That was kinda my ineptly made point

We have 3 RB’s who can’t run between the tackles effectively so I’d like a guy who can move the pile and create a real lane on some short yardage situations. Not saying he’s Jahri Evans just think his style of play would give us something lacking from the other interior guys

Good move or bad?

I don’t think Shanahan should really be punishing Haynesworth, you know? Yeah, he missed out on OTAs and minicamp, because he wanted to be traded. Now, his perspective has been changed, and his focus is Washington Redskins football. Do you really have to punish him for his past mistakes and make him really want to be traded or cut? Or do you reward him for seeing his mistakes and let him back on the team?

Shanahan is gonna really piss of Haynesworth. Unless Shanahan passes him in the next couple days, Haynesworth might blow up, and, rightfully so.

by BigOLinemen on Jul 30, 2010 12:38 PM EDT reply actions

BigO - totally agree

A little is OK, but he better not push it too far. He shouldn’t risk pissing him off. Basically, he’s paid the price for missing previous activities, so shouldn’t be punished. The current tests are ostensibly just to make sure he’s ready to go, which (supposedly) isn’t necessary for those who attended the OTAs. Thus, fair and reasonable, up to a point, as long as that’s the obvious purpose. If it begins to look like pushishment, things could go downhill.

by Donnio1234 on Jul 30, 2010 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

"Risk pissing him off"

AH is a grown man playing a grown man’s game. He can either act like a petulant child and get mad at his coach for teaching him a lesson, or he can man up and do what Shanny wants. It is a punishment, and his fat ass deserves it. I couldn’t give a shit whether Haynesworth gets pissed off. He’s not 12. Shanahan is not the mean middle school teacher. He’s the coach. Haynesworth needs to know his place and he better learn soon. He’s been an asshole the entire offseason and now he’s paying the price. He needs to learn that life doesn’t revolve around Albert. So there you go.

I hate all this defending Haynesworth BS. He has no ground to stand on. Do you really think he’s seen his mistakes? The only reason he got in shape is to be traded. He doesn’t want to be on this team. He’s made that clear for a while now. You think he had an epiphany? I don’t.

I'm back. YAY SUMMER!

Shanahan needs a way out

That is, Albert has to do well enough on the test (get close) so that Shanny can declare victory and get him on the field. “Good enough” is subjective, so it’s when Shanahan figures he’s made Albert suffer enough. Making AH pay a small and reasonable price for missing OTAs should be good for discipline, especially since it’s coming from Shanahan, not Haslett, who can sit back and sympathize, ruefully saying “well, he’s the boss”. And it’s not a bad idea for Shanahan to be tough, so the team, the defense and Haslett can all (sort of) rally around good old Albert, who’s presumably doing his best. It could help bring the team together in a good way – not against Shanahan (as long as the test is considered reasonable and fair and not excessive).

by Donnio1234 on Jul 30, 2010 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

QUIT DEFENDING HAYNESWORTH !

You all were the same people saying that they should put him on the inactive list and make him sit all year when you were mad at him. Some of you said far worse harsh punishments for AH than Shanahan is pursuing.

People keep mentioning this “Change of Heart” – WTF???? Why do you believe he has really changed. It’s convenient his change of heart came the day before training camp which if he missed he’d have to give up his money. He is playing everyone. He is lazy and didn’t want to be here, and now he’s “changing his heart” because he wants to come back and keep his money.

Shanahan is the coach. What he says goes. All of you that say this is unfair clearly never played football and clearly have gotten used to WEAK ASS COACHES like SPURRIER AND ZORN! This is how coaching works. He runs the show just like Schottenheimer did.

If you defend AH or feel sorry for him, then you are a fool and are being played by Fat Albert. Shanahan is no fool!

by preppiejack on Jul 30, 2010 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

That’s crap. Fat Al is a good player, he’s shown he wants to play by getting in shape, and communicating with his D-Coordinator. This conditioning test is BS, and a pissing contest. 300’s? That’s not something that his conditioning is about.

by lynxtheone on Jul 30, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

How many Super Bowl wins do you have?

Cuz Shanahan has 2 as a head coach. I think I trust his judgement about team management over yours.

AH is a big baby. A good player is both talented and a team player. AH needs to learn his role. Even Peyton Manning didn’t question his coach’s decision to sit him when they were pursuing a perfect season. Peyton knows that the coach is coach. AH needs to learn his role.

by preppiejack on Jul 30, 2010 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Way too much discussion of feelings here

this is football. When you’re at practice, the coach’s word is law. You STFU and do what the coach tells you to do, no matter how much it sucks.
Shanahan is basically telling everyone, especially Haynesworth, to “Harden the fuck up.”

Procedure ,agreement,understanding YES
NOTE*We dont know just how he lost the weight ,healthy eating, diet, and or Conditioning .
If he did it through Conditioning and meant what he said when he stated that he would report to Camp N SHAPE. That is what MS expected
Then I can understand what MS is doing…but I trust that MS’s greater message is to the WHOLE
“IF WE are well Conditioned and are Coachable,we will exceed Expectations…

Mike Wise, Washington Post

In today’s article said Shanahan ought to “lay off” Albert: AH is a beaten man, Shanny has made his point, now it’s time to move on. Naturally, I agree. Don’t push too hard – it could backfire.

by Donnio1234 on Jul 30, 2010 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

If he continues to push a few things can happen

-Haynesworth passes the test soon and starts to practice
-Haynesworth say F it stops trying and the team starts going after that 21 mil

-The team thinks the punishment doesn’t fit the crime and rally’s around Haynesworth.

option number 3 is the best in my opinion, great coaches don’t mind being hated as long as it brings the team closer together. If Al continues to try and still can’t make it then it’s time for the Leaders of the Defense to step in and work with him. Get the other guys on the line out there to run with him and see how he compares to the rest of the group, if he is competitive or better than they are Shanahan will welcome him back if the team welcomes him back…

Is AH

still getting paid because he is at camp or is there a fine or penalty if he does not pass the conditioning test?

If he is still getting paid what is his incentive for passing the test? If it is pride and he wants to play football then he would have passed the test first time (they run the same 300 yard shuttle runs in Titans camp).

If he is not getting the camp/roster bonus because he iis unfit how much is he losing per day?

AH vs MS

I think that MS is smart enough to have prepared for all possibilities with AH.
I also think that they have discussed and agreed to the actions that are being played out. I think that they both know when it needs to end…It also seems that CONDITIONING is something that AH never had to commit to. I believe that he has been convinced that a Well Conditioned TEAM is a WINNER and that he can have a Major Role in this success !! AH knows that he has some Warriors on this D and that it could be Pretty GOOD. He may be Buying IN and accepting the necessity of Conditioning.
MS is a Man and a Coach…he is not going to do things just to do things…I strongly feel that he and AH have agreed to do it Shanny’s way
Shanny knows that its much Superior if this marriage works out….and i think it will

Bad news flowing on our WRs, Santana is potentially being put at flanker, while Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly are behind Galloway and Roydell Williams on the depth chart.. both DT and MK are rumored to be potentially in danger of being cut.

This is bad, very bad.

Our WRs are a mess. DMcNabb is not going to magically cure this. We need VJax and we need him bad.

by SomebodyBuyAustinaSteak on Jul 30, 2010 10:17 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah

I really was hoping big shit for Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, but I’ve heard only a lot of bad from them. Roydell is a good receiver, but should only be a #3 option (unless of course he can prove otherwise, but why put an unproven guy at #2?). Galloway shouldn’t be higher then a #4 guy, even though he had a great career. Devin or Malcolm should have stepped up, and it doesn’t look that way. If Vincent Jackson goes on the trade market, expect him to be a Redskin. I don’t think we let Seattle beat us out to a quality guy.

On the bright side, I continue to hear good about Larry Johnson, Fred Davis, and Chris Cooley. At least our TEs look good, and RBs (Portis, Johnson, and Torain) appear to be pretty solid as well.

Anybody know why Albert didn't take the test Saturday?

I’m not hot on the test idea, but it’s probably fair. There’s been some debate on just how hard the thing is, and whether AH should be expected to pass it, or even can pass it. One point suddenly occurred to me: you are supposed to do it in 70 seconds, 73 the second time. AH just did it in 70 and 71 seconds (while failing twice). So that answers it – he definitely can do it, and probably pretty easily. So why doesn’t he just do it? And he’s just watching practice now. Did he refuse to take the test, and thus not let back to practice? Frustrating!
