Chargers Release NT Ian Scott - Could Redskins be a Possible Landing Spot?

Per PFT.com the San Diego Chargers have released Nose Tackle Ian Scott.  Scott, who was the Chargers starter for the second half of the season last year, was expected to hold down the starting NT spot in 2010, but with the addition of Cam Thomas, a 6'3" 330 pound defensive linemen from North Carolina, Scott became expendable.

Thomas was a fifth round draft pick in this years NFL Draft, and may be better suited to handle two gap responsibilities in the Chargers 3-4 defense.

Scott, who is listed at 6' 3" 315 pounds, was a forth round draft pick of the Chicago Bears in 2003.  For his career, he has appeared in 65 games with 40 starts.

It could make some sense for the Redskins to give this guy a look.  We all know of the looming Haynesworth saga, and no one knows how Maake Kemoeatu will be following his return from a torn Achilles Tendon.  It can never hurt to have extra competition in training camp.

Anyone know much about this guy?

I don’t see why we wouldn’t check out any available true nose tackles. We don’t have the luxury of a premier NT or the depth to not look at him. Bring him in for competition and hope for the best.

yeah- he lost his starting job to a rookie fifth round draft pick before training camp even started- lol but we are pretty light on both lines so i agree, bring him in!

Do it if the price is right. I dont know anything about him, but i got a bad feeling about injuries on the D-line this year.

by oklahomaskins on Jun 21, 2010 6:16 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Agreed

As long as the offer isn’t stupid then I think it’s worth considering especially since Haynesworth probably won’t play for us and our other nose tackle options have serious injury concerns.

by SkinsOsTerps on Jun 21, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Your bad feeling, is it coming from the majority of the players had injuries last year, or is it the fact that alot of them didn’t even see the field?

by travisjh86 on Jun 22, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Definitely

Always nicety have multiple options. It’ll also show Fatbert that we’ll be just fine while he’s sitting at home eating Twinkies and gearing up to be on The Biggest Loser.

by CJHutch on Jun 21, 2010 6:37 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

That was harsh Hutch

Don't ever let failure get you down. Remember, a very successful major league hitter failes 70% of the time.

I highly doubt

That Haynesworthless will even have the motivation to get up off the coach and be a contestant on The Biggest Loser. And besides, Jillian Michaels would destroy Fat Al.

Everyone is too harsh on Haynesworth

Selfish is one thing, but just because he is fleecing the Redskins doesn’t automatically make him an obese lazy-ass. We don’t know his conditioning because he hasn’t showed up, but realistically he could be in some great conditioning

by BigOLinemen on Jun 21, 2010 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

except last year after signing the 100mm dollar contract, he came in out of shape, played out of shape, and never for one minute was in good condition- even at the end of the season. i agree, there is a chance that after all those opportunities that he worked hard to get in shape while he was fleecing his team. but i think it is strongly unlikely!

by les boulez bomber on Jun 21, 2010 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Just because the dude was on the sideline on one knee

Doesn’t mean he was out of shape. From what I recall, he played the average amount of plays he did in Tennessee here, which means we got what we paid for. Maybe he was out of shape, maybe he was just 350lbs and it is difficult to have stellar cardio. He was a force when he played, and look at only Orakpo and Carter’s success to see his impact. That’s what I worry about this year.

by BigOLinemen on Jun 22, 2010 6:55 AM EDT up reply actions

exactly right

He’s taking on double and triple teams…with success. No one can do that every single play.

Hogs Haven. On Twitter. And Facebook.

If he was in

Tip top shape, or even in good shape, there would have been no reason for him to be in Tennessee, “working out” with his trainer. I’ve never seen another football player lay on the field as if they were shot, or look as if they were having a heart attack on the sidelines so often. Yes, I realize he was taking on double and triple teams sometimes, but all that means is he was doing what a 3-4 NT does in essence. And yes, we all know that Haynesworth is good, and can be great when he wants to be, but I think Carter and Orakpo had more of an impact on their own success than Haynesworth did. But more importantly, having Haynesworth play only got us 4 wins last year.

by bigrm18 on Jun 22, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

You're right about not being a lazy good for nothing because he stole Dan Snyder's money...

but that’s not why he’s an obese, lazy-ass. He’s an obese lazy-ass because he’s … a lazy, fat, rude, self centered, me-first, non-team oriented jerk.

by BillWard on Jun 22, 2010 8:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Too harsh?

Really? We’re too harsh on Haynesworthless?

Are we talking about the same man (and I use the word “man” loosely)? The same man who complained about how he was being used in Blache’s vanilla 4-3 defense? And now, the same man who is complaining about playing in a more aggressive, attacking 3-4 defense? Which is a 3-4 defense that he hasn’t even taken the time to learn the details of, and doesn’t even know for sure how he would be used in that defense. We’re talking about a man who is supposedly working out to be in the best shape of his life, yet hasn’t even shown his face, nor his body, the past few months. The same man who said at his press conference that he wanted to be the best, yet doesn’t even show up to any of the team workouts or practices? The same man who said this:

“Whatever they ask me to do, that’s what I’m gonna do,” Haynesworth said. “I’m not gonna be a distraction or anything. I’m just gonna do what they ask me to do.”

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/albert-haynesworth/albert-haynesworth-on-the-swit.html

The same man who said that quote, yet decided to take a check for 21 million dollars and suddenly wants to be traded? Too harsh? To call him an obese, lazy-ass, egotistical, unmotivated, and selfish douchebag is an understatement.

by bigrm18 on Jun 22, 2010 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I see no reason not to bring him in

He’d add to depth if Kemo is great and would be a good back-up otherwise. I forget who is currently playing at NT with Kemo’s absence, but he is getting good starting reps in the mean time. I would rather have a guy with starting experience start NT, but I don’t see this guy really exploding with Skins. He’d be a good acquisition, probably better then whoever is 2nd string (behind Kemo) now, but it wouldn’t make a big deal to me.

Here is a big deal though: SIGN TERRELL OWENS (just kidding, felt it necessary before another post shows up)

by BigOLinemen on Jun 21, 2010 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

Thank you very much

I think with the extra starting reps with the absence of Kemo and Haynesworth, Green will be a strong backup. Again, more competition never hurts, especially on the DL which appears weak at NT. I could care less, but it wouldn’t be a bad signing.

by BigOLinemen on Jun 21, 2010 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

why not.

maybe this guy won,t complain like fat albert and wii give us all he has . if they sign this guy i say goodbye to fat ass albert.

Cast-offs and rejects

We seem to be doing a lot of dumpster diving lately, picking up a lot of guys who were shunned by other teams (some better than us, some worse (Rams)). Are these cases of not having enough room for these guys and we’re just lucky, or are there flaws in these guys that they are seeing but we aren’t? It seems we’re shopping at the flea market getting other people’s junk while other teams seem to be shopping at Nordstrom.

by BAFGA on Jun 22, 2010 7:45 AM EDT reply actions

We do seem to be getting the better end of these flea market deals

I’m not saying we’re going to find the last remaining copy of the Gettysburg Address inside a $3.00 picture, but we’re getting decent guys who want to be here and compete. Team-wise that’s a lot better than many of the Gucci guys we’ve picked up over the years both in Nordstroms and in the second hand stores.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

I agree Scott all those big names never pan out for us let’s get some under paid or maybe want to play for that big contract so if you’re hungry enough come try out and if you make the team you will earn your money honestly like me and any other person that works (not u AL)GO SKINS!!!

by Daddyssanchez on Jun 23, 2010 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions

It Can't Hurt

You can’t blame Shanny and Haslett if they want to look at a lot of pieces of cole here. That’s what what open competition is all about!
Also, with all the DLine guys we have coming off of injury, It’d be nice to have another guy who’s offseason conditioning didn’t include “Rehab.”

by ATXSkinfan on Jun 22, 2010 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

Awe, give the guy a chance!

Just look at his picture! Come on, you know you want Shanallen to turn this guy’s frown upside down! Seriously though, competition is always a good thing, and having someone else on the team that is a native nose tackle would be very wise in the current climate.
