Cerrato's Released Redskins Having Trouble Finding Homes

As announced previously in this space, XFINITY from Comcast has generously agreed to support the best NFL community around -- us! As part of that effort, between now and the end of the 2010 NFL season XFINITY will be sponsoring a variety of special editorial and interactive features on our site.

Here's a list of all the notable releases the Redskins have had since Shanahan has taken over. What's the famous line? Ah yes, "Another man's trash is another man's treasure." That doesn't seem to be the case when it's Cerrato's trash. I'm definitely coming across harsher than I intend, but that line sounded too good to pass up. It says something when the majority of the players that you had on your 2009 roster, who the new coaching staff released, are not picked up by any of the other 31 NFL teams.

Less than half of the Redskins on last year's roster have found new homes. It should be noted Todd Collins was wooed by the Ravens, but no deal has been signed there. Griff, Smoot, and Randy Thomas are likely retirement candidates. Thomas, a work-horse for the Skins for so many years, probably should have hung em a couple years ago. How the coaching staff didn't see that when the fans did still baffles to me this day. Bugel is a very loyal guy, but this is a business, and the Redskins were the equivalent of the Lehman Brothers last year.

If there's anything that comes out of this list of retired players, it should be Fred Smoot getting a sideline job with Comcast SportsNet. Can you imagine pre-game and post-game shows with BMitch and Smoot? Must see TV.

This just proves that Cerrato was a"bug eyed" idiot. He thought he could win with these players? He thought these players were good? Rock Cartwright? Hey Vinny, no one cares if Cartwright can consistently get to the 35 yard line…the goal is to take it to the residence!! His players arent good and nobody wants them including Shanahan!

Rock was a fan favorite to some

Some fans loved Rock, and thought he was the heart and soul of special teams. Some think that our special teams will be garbage now that he is gone. As for me? I think he’s overrated.

What does that have to do with scoring touchdowns on kickoffs???… that’s whats wrong with most Redskins fans… fan favorite? OK he’s a fan favorite.. great we went 4-12 and he never scored tds and we consistently have losing records.. who the hell cares about fan favorites and why do so many Redskins fans fall in love with certain players regardless of their actual on field production??? seems like Shanahan doesn’t care about fan favorites..he cares about whats actually important, WINING FOOTBALL GAMES!!!

But these players

Were apart of the playoff roster that Cerrato assembled. At least they were considered to be playoff-worthy by Cerrato’s standards. Just goes to show how incompetent Cerrato was as a fake-me-out GM, and how idiotic Snyder was for keeping Cerrato for so long.

Take a look at the current roster.

For a few players that are still on the roster, it does not make much sense. Why is Darrel Young who was drafted as a LB switched to a RB still on the roster? Then some of the players that were cut, i.e., Marko Mitchell, have new players at the same positions, particularly WRs.

Most of last seasons September cuts managed to find other homes and some like Mason and Aldridge ended up back with the Skins. Jeremy Bridges was picked up by the Cardinals, but Robert Thomas LB did not get picked up.

Betts surprises me a bit

I’m sure he could help out a team lacking RB depth

by BobZupcic on May 25, 2010 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

His ACL injury was pretty late in the season

Plus with his age, not a lot of upside to bring him in to camp to ride a bike.

yeah

Betts needs to hang it up. His production was dropping off anyway. I don’t think there’s a big market for 30 year old RB’s coming off knee injuries who have even been a “featured back.”

Somewhere out there....

There are similar posts on other team pages with several names listed as signing with the Redskins and posters laughing about us picking up THEIR trash…..

All I can say is that a straight up trash exchange won’t move this team to the playoffs and especially the SB. Any player moves or trades or whatever has to be centered around drafting, drafting and more drafting. Otherwise, this team will always look like a fantasy team that loses the first 4 weeks of the season – scrambling for flashes of brilliance in the FA pool while knowing that the reality of the situation was simply that YOU COULDN’T DRAFT WORTH A SQUAT and you WON’T make the playoffs, AGAIN.

but...but...but....nope,

thats pretty dark, and I can’t even come up with a BS, drunk on kool-aid, argument for it. Even if we do contend this year, the wild-card looks tough as I see NO, Carolina, GB and Minn. all being pretty good teams this year.

by MagicHat on May 25, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

really?

You see the NO and Minn being “pretty good” this year? You mean both the top two teams in the NFC last year are going to knock us out of a wild card spot? The only reach or slight surprise you mentioned was Carolina, but the other three will definitely be division champs or wild cards.

by mdm1185 on May 25, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I put NO an Minn. in with Car. and GB...

only because they show two playoff contenders in the same division, and, yes, I am looking at Minn being “pretty good”. I don’t see Favre recreating the season he had last year. He brought a whirlwind of energy when he came in, from the locker room to the fans that will not be there this year. I think they will miss Chester Taylor more than they realize. Bottom line is that it is difficult to recreate the wave that they were riding last year. A whole lot of changes in the NFC, AZ and SF with question marks, unproven heisman winners at QB and Pete Carroll in Seattle, hard to predict this year.

by MagicHat on May 25, 2010 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I know

guess I’m just having a bad day and needed to take it out on somebody and didn’t pay attention to the order listed.
Also, while I think Minn will miss Chester Taylor, they picked up Toby Gerhart who can go pretty far in replacing him.

Also, while on the topic of Minn. why is the media still questioning whether Farve will come back or not? Do they think he need the ankle surgery to better fit into his real comfortable jeans? No, he waited until now to have the surgery so he could skip all of the offseason programs and skip into town at the last minute again to be hero.

by mdm1185 on May 25, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn good point

On Favre. They’re still one bad injury to him or AP from being a train wreck though

by gopens44 on May 25, 2010 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That is Favre's MO....

but its probably a good thing, who want to listen to Favre talking for 3 months before the season starts. (don’t get me wrong I think Favre is a great football player) also I am not entirely sure he can extend his consecutive game streak another 16 games.

by MagicHat on May 25, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Wild Cards

I think he figures Carolina and GB will take the wild cards. I’d say ATL and our division foes will be bigger threats, but it’s still likely that 10-6 would get us in. Three or four equal teams in a division should actually lower the playoff threshhold (knock each other out), as does one dominant team. The worst is two good teams well above the other two. So I hope the Bears can challenge GB and Minn, and Carolina challenge NO and ATL. Looking at our schedule, I think 10-6 is doable. I count eight “likely” (we’re favored) wins (3 in div, at Stl, at Det, TB, at Jax, Hous) , plus winnable games: at Bears and at Tenn. We also play Gb at home, and could win that, and could sweep one in team our division. This assumes home losses to Minn and Indy. Of course, we could go 5-11, too. Who knows how much damage the 3-4 can do?

by Donnio1234 on May 25, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

My math only leaves one WC spot since goofy Dallas and the Giants will both likely make the playoffs. Assuming that AZ, GB, NO win their division, that still leaves SEA, SF, MIN, CAR,and ATL that have talent either equal to or better right now than the Redskins.

It’s most likely that Atlanta will be more competitive than Carolina, and that SF will turn the corner before Seattle.

by gopens44 on May 25, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we can be a better team than the Giants this year....

Atlanta is a fairly unknown entity to me this year, I though Matt Moore looked pretty good and a lot of Carolina players will be refreshed to have Jake gone….and Fox is coaching for his job…again. I can’t judge Seattle…..I will go out on a limb and say SF wins that division.

The roster in 2010

There does seem to be a short run strategy for RBs and DL. The assumption that there will be NFL football in 2011 and that there will be a big off season free agent market is likely. I would expect that there will be an extensive turnout in the roster between 2010 and 2011. What is happening in 2010 is just enough to have a winning record and to install new offensive and defensive schemes. No point in getting your hopes to high for 2010. Obviously it is not a youth movement now.

Cut list

I don’t think it says anything at all about Cerrato, and is not a hit on the players. All were good enough to make the team, many were very good, and all had numerous supporters. The few who haven’t been picked up yet are mostly older players, usually with injury issues (Griff, Betts, Smoot, Thomas), and are in no way a hit on Vinny. Excluding those guys, you’re left with Montgomery, Alridge and Collins. The former had some good years, but apparently went downhill. Alridge was always marginal, never played, and apparently didn’t have anything except speed. Collins was Zorn’s boy, put ahead of Colt as a competent backup. I like him, but he was limited, and is fairly old.
All in all, this list has nothing to say about Cerrato or Snyder. They gave the coaches a talented group of players (except for the O-line), and the coaches blew it (although devastating injuries added to the disaster). By the way, the O-line depth was severely weakened by Zorn/Bugle’s mind boggling cut of Jeremy Bridges – their only experienced and competent backup tackle – surely one of the dumbest moves in Redskin history – and nothing to do with Vinny, who brought in Bridges and Big Mike Williams.

You do realize

Zorn had about 0 personnel control, right? Cerrato and Snyder trusted him with nothing. I think it is stupid to blame Zorn for ANY personnel stuff like that. He wasn’t a great coach, but I love how you blame it on the head coach with no control and Bugel, only one of the greatest line coaches ever.

by BigOLinemen on May 25, 2010 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Zorn was not in charge his two years here

He was a puppet for Danny. Do you really think Zorn had the authority to bench Jason Campbell or any other player he wanted to bench? Do you think he was allowed to have control over the roster and who played? If you did then you are very naive. He had no authority and had no power. Do you think he could bench Portis if he wanted to? NO. Shanahan has power and authority (which is needed for a team to be successful) the coach has tio have the ultimate authority over his football team and cant be undermined by the owner.

by ImFROMdc88 on May 25, 2010 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

BigO and imfrom

I think you’re wrong. I don’t think that Snyder or even Cerrato had day to day operational management of the team. The Bridges cut supports my view. Bridges was Cerrato’s boy, and had a low salary, so Cerrato had no reason to cut him in favor of Joe’s beloved walk-ons and locals (By the way, I loved Joe, too, but I think he lost it a bit last year – remember how he raved about Heyer? And kept Batiste?). Cerrato probably didn’t even know most of the O-line disasters. I think Zorn controlled the roster and who played (although he might have heard something if he did certain things). Snyder just recently stated flatly that he had a more limited role than the press reported. I don’t think you can point to any specific decision dictated by Snyder. Consider Jason Campbell. That had to be Zorn sticking with him. Snyder and Cerrato knew he was lousy and tried to get somebody better. Zorn stuck with him, dumped Colt onto IR and refused to play Todd even when JC was ailing. Yes I do blame the coach (who did in fact have operational control). Yes, management did obtain the players, but then they went to Zorn. Zorn devised and ran the unimaginative offense (how could Snyder or Cerrato have possibly meddled in it? They didn’t have the knowledge or desire to interfere.) If Dan had more say it probably would have been better. Poor Zorn was clueless. Do you think Snyder would have done those trick plays in the way Zorn did?

by Donnio1234 on May 25, 2010 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

of course Danny cant call plays and be the coach

but, where talking about him never having final say or authority over the football team. Those are two different things bro. Zorn could call plays (until play calling was stripped from him), but he had no real say or power over the football team. He could not bench Devin themas or Malcolm Kelly, he could not bench Jason Campbell (if he wanted to) and Clinton Portis is Dan’s buddy so Zorn knew he had no authority over Portis.

by ImFROMdc88 on May 25, 2010 11:28 PM EDT reply actions

Control

I think Zorn could do anything he wanted to. What could Snyder or Cerrato do about it? Now, maybe Jim was influenced by what he thought Snyder wanted – sort of the “yes man” syndrome, but that was probably very rare. I just don’t think Snyder had any desire to coach the Redskins – he knows his limitations. Benching Portis was never an option, and it’s clear Snyder did not impose his view of JC. You may be thinking of a nebulous kind of “prestige” thing for Zorn, but I doubt that was a factor, considering his numerous other shortcomings. Think back to the various drafts. Snyder described the process once – basically saying most of his staff sat down and discussed all the players’ strengths and weaknesses, and together worked out a draft order – as much of a team effort as Snyder could make it. Now, as the boss, he probably carried a lot of weight, but he’d hardly ever go against the position people on a technical matter. And he’d certainly rely on Bugel and Zorn on how badly they needed an offensive lineman. In short, I think the front office got the players based on the advice of the coaches, and pretty much stayed out of it after that. I think that’s how all teams work, because there is no other way it can work. The 4-12 season was 80+% Zorn’s doing.

by Donnio1234 on May 25, 2010 11:55 PM EDT reply actions

That was last year...

Wow from the memories we can win 5 games oouch. I respect everyones opinion and yes change is needed from time to time. The Skins have had some good yardage numbers in years past but scoring points have been hindered upon having someone other than Moss and Cooly catch passes with any success. They gambled on Zorn too bring the west coast offense to get it done since the defense was OK enough to be playoff caliber. I always questioned the Zorn hiring and we know the rest. With Cerrato gone maybe we can hold on to a coach long enough to get the project producing wins and management picking people in the draft that can play for this team instead of Free Agents with big paydays that hurt salary cap. Things do look better since vacation is over.
