Antonio Bryant?

The post is reporting that we are bringing in Antonio Bryant for a FA visit and might sign him.  I honestly didn't think we would look at WR but it's what is happening.  Not sure what to make of it.  I kinda like our recieving group even though I'm not super high on Moss anymore.  Obviously if we could get him cheap thats cool I guess.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/free-agency/with-new-coach-system-an-upgra.html#more

Also the Post is reporting Andre Carter looks like the odd man out in the 3-4 and seemed to imply he might not make the team this year especially if we get Larry Foote.  How do you guys feel about that?  For the long term I don't mind getting rid of him I guess but I think he had 2 good years left at DE in a 4-3.

Carter

It would be very unfortunate to lose Andre. For one thing, most say that we’ll stay at 4-3 or a hybrid. He can do both, anyway.

by Donnio1234 on Mar 9, 2010 1:35 PM EST reply actions

Who are most?

The WaPo has been reporting it solely as a 3-4 for weeks now. He actually can’t do both thats why he would be the odd man out.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 9, 2010 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

He can play both,

he just may choose not to want any part of the 3-4 again.

Carter

I would vote keep him reguardless… If they do do a hybrid they will be using a floating DE could be left side could be right. Rotate the ends in and out to keep them fresh…

Trade Value?

What do you think Carter’s trade value would be? If we could get a third rounder I’d say take it. He’s a great guy and freakishly athletic but if he doesn’t fit the scheme, he doesn’t fit the scheme.

Matt Mosley

Thinks he’s worth a fourth-rounder, as long as he doesn’t cost too much

Bryant

Well we did get rid of ARE… Need another jersey seller to take his place. Dont know if we can just leave the passing game to a group that didnt really wanna compete the last 2 years. Thomas did well a COUPLE of games but he is injury prone… Kelly just doesnt seem to have the attitude to compete…

Does the FO

looking at Antonio Bryant mean Moss or Devin Thomas is headed to Baltimore? You heard it here first!

by Scott E on Mar 9, 2010 1:53 PM EST reply actions

The Ravens could get a 1st round pick for Gaither.

He is a proven LT without the rookie risks. The question was whether the Ravens could afford two LT salaries since Oher can play there as well.

by Jefferson1935 on Mar 9, 2010 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

Well it has been reported that they would be willing to take a second rounder

Which I would do in a heartbeat. I doubt they’d take Moss straight up but I would do back flips if they did.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 9, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Injury issues make it the Ravens wont recieve a first round pick.

Injuries are some times as big of a risk as “rookie” risks.

Boldin, Stallworth

How many new receivers do they need over there in Baltimore?

by DoWork on Mar 9, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Well Stallworth is no guarantee to be on the team

and isn’t very good. They are just taking a flyer on Stallworth they can cut him later for nothing. I think we would be more likely to get them to bite on one of the guys on our secondary cuz they really need 3 new starters there.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 9, 2010 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

Scott, Moss is gone and Devin will stay. Devin is our best receiver so why would we get rid of him?

Moss is one of those left over locker room cancers. Kelly can be a star this year if his knee is 100%. People forget that he had major knee surgery and his knee was not healed all the way last year.

by LETJASONPASS on Mar 9, 2010 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

Thomas is a good WR im just worried that he is injury prone

he has been injured both his first 2 years

Why is Moss gone

His play last year?

He seems to still be a solid receiver and can still contribute
Why is he a locker room cancer? I have not read that anywhere about Moss

by dr WNC on Mar 9, 2010 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

He isn't gone

LJPansy likes pushing buttons… Moss will be here for a while. He is still the better WR. The others have ability. Its just that Kelly doesnt show it on the field. Thomas cant stay healthy for more than 5 games at any one time… I dont think that ARE was a cancer I think he was a motivator that was also very cocky.. Basically he was expendable and they wanted to free up capspace… Moss will be here For at least another year or two.

Devin Thomas

How can you say Thomas is our best receiver? How many passes did he catch? What do your precious statistics say? How long did it take him to get even minimally good at running routes? He’s not shown he can get open against NFL D backs. He is fast, but that is not the main attribute of a good receiver. He’s no Santana, man!

by Donnio1234 on Mar 9, 2010 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

DUde... dont fall for that one too

He got me going on Devin Thomas a few weeks ago… Supposedly there was a changing of the guard. Somewhere in the season Thomas drew better numbers than Moss. I only saw one game he did better then he got hurt again. LJPunanny is just trying to get a rise out of people… JUst dismiss most of what he says as moronic banter.

I think they will go QB, and I hope it's Bradford.

But I think at this point they may also go Claussen if SB is gone.
I know Claussen is highly rated and should be a productive starter, but I am finding it difficult to root for him. Of course I never cared for Theisman either until he won a Super Bowl. Then I found it easy to root for him. Claussen definately reminds me of Joe T.

I was definitly ennamored with Clausen during the season, eventhough I hate ND. I’m still unsure on him however.

I didn't read the Post article that way

He was saying Carter would be the “odd man out” as in he wouldn’t be a starter. There is still a need for backups. And if Haslett does intend to switch between 3-4 and 4-3 formations fairly frequently, that will make Carter highly valuable (although probably not as valuable as he was last year). He could probably play some OLB on running plays in the 3-4 (wouldn’t want him in coverage, but I think he could learn to work from a standing position) and definitely DE when we play a 4-man line. Of course, his trade value right now is probably the highest it’s been since he got here, so they should see what they can get. In the end, it might be best for him and for the team if he goes somewhere where they have a 4-3.

by kseandoyle on Mar 9, 2010 4:54 PM EST reply actions

could be

I doubt he will be on the team come training camp. Also we keep on repeating the Hybrid approach but the way the WaPo is reporting everything the last 2 weeks it certainly seems like we are just moving to 3-4 period. I think the Hybrid talk was just a smoke screen.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 9, 2010 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Well

there hasn’t been any hybrid talk at all, because there has been no official word from Haslett or Shanny. There was that quote a while back from Haslett saying he believed his players could work in a 3-4, but he has yet to say that that will be the base package. So any talk of “hybrids” has been media speculation anyway.
But every defense is a hybrid. No one uses only a 4-man line or only a 3-man line. Some defenses use a lot more of one than the other, of course. Greg Blache (Mr. Old School, Set in His Ways himself) rarely used the 3-man line, but it did happen. I think, however, that Haslett coaches his defenses a little more fluidly. Remember when Williams was here and our line could be anywhere from 3-6 guys? That’s what I expect — a willingness to change up personnel and placement of said personnel on the field based on what needs to get accomplished. Of course, Williams probably rotates his players more than any other DC in the league, but his recent Super Bowl win will encourage copycats. All I’m basically saying is that it will behoove us to have players who can thrive in different roles. Andre Carter might be over-qualified and over-paid to be a role-player, but it’s worth consideration.

by kseandoyle on Mar 9, 2010 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

But Carter doesn't thrive in different roles and has made it pretty clear he doesn't want to move to a 3-4

There is a difference between pulling a lineman out and putting a DB in(What Grilliams did with the Saints when he used a 3-3-5) and having a base 3-4. It’s not as fluid between 3-4 and 4-3 as you make it out to be. If we were being fluid we wouldn’t be making guys change positions(Jarmon, L. Alexander) or pursuing guys who made it clear they want to go back to a 3-4(Foote). I agree the Skins haven’t said what the base is but all the reporting makes it a base 3-4 which is way different than Grilliams 3-lineman sub packages(just a different variation of the standard 4-3 Nickel package). You may be right about it being a Grilliams copy but thats certainly not the way it is being reported.
As for Carter I doubt they keep a disgruntled vet making that much money at a position we are currently overloaded at IMHO.

Back to the jist of this post

I think Bryant would be a good addition to the Skins. If he does come aboard, I don’t necessiarily think it means Moss is a goner, but I do believe his roll will diminish. If Bryant takes time away from any of our recievers, I hope it is Moss, as I would really like to see our young WR’s get more meaningful snaps, and this requires them to be on the field(and stay healthy).

by milcmann on Mar 9, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Dan's paycheck

Maybe Allen is controlling Dan’s football money, and is much tighter than Dan was. Allen said (in response to a question about why they haven’t signed many), that it doesn’t make any difference when somebody is signed, if they help the team. Seems to me it does matter if we lose somebody we want because we were too slow or tightfisted. Like on losing Clifton and Pashos: if it was because we were cheap, I’d call it bad. But if it was because they didn’t fit our team or plan or were not worth what they demanded, no problem. At this stage, I ‘ll trust his judgement. There’s plenty of time. On a visit – I sort of thought that you could usually believe the agent, but I could be wrong.

by Donnio1234 on Mar 9, 2010 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

We offered more money to Clifton than he signed for in GB, he was using us as leverage.

But I understand where you’re coming from. We could be losing out on players that could be great role players for us, even if for short stints. We have a lot of holes and I hope they can find the right players that fit their scheme the best. I like the patient approach and I’m taking the “wait and see if what they’re doing works” but it’s so hard…

by travisjh86 on Mar 10, 2010 12:51 AM EST up reply actions

I doubt Clifton makes it through the year

Signing him might be throwing good money after bad

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 10, 2010 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

That's good, if it's true

I don’t really want a guy who might be good but is probably over the hill and who definitely has character issues. I’m fine with keeping Moss, who might be good but is probably over the hill and who does not have character issues.

by kseandoyle on Mar 9, 2010 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

We don't need Antonio Bryant

Why do we need him…we don’t. He’s not even good…he just showed that he can be good…but overall he’s not good. The only reason I could seen the skins doing this is if their planning on trading someone and I hope its not Moss. Moss is waaaaaaay better than Bryant so that would be a significant downgrade if we made that switch.

On the other hand….picking up Bryant and trading Cooley for a 2nd rounder would be ideal. As long as its fair game during training camp between Bryant and our young receivers. Let them all duke it out!!!

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Mar 10, 2010 8:37 AM EST up reply actions

I hate to say it but

Cooley is not an all-pro, he’s not as spectacular as alot of you think. Watch how defenses play us, they practically dont cover Cooley…they just leave a safety over top of him. And not to mention, JC only throws to the tight end because its too challenging for him to throw else where. Trading Cooley could also help JC, being as though he can’t be as lenient on Cooley anymore, which may cause him to expand his game. Besides Cooley cannot block and a blocking TE that may catch a few passes is more of what we need. With someone able to get Moss the ball, he is far more a threat than Cooley in every way.

by mr.snyderhireme on Mar 10, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Cooley is well liked and hyped

but very effective. We have a blocking TE who can catch. Yoder was one of our most reliable scorers last year, if you recall. I don’t think we realize addition thru subtraction by taking away weapons from Jason, although I do concede the offense opened up a lot once Cooley was hurt. I pretty much gave Sherm the nod for making that happen versus it being the result of Cooley’s absence.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Mar 10, 2010 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

I attribute that to DT finally coming into his own

For the first time ever JC had 3 offensive weapons to throw too(DT,SM,FD). It’s easy to take away 2 players but teams couldn’t take away all 3.

by Scott E on Mar 10, 2010 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

Bay, I agree 100% on this one. This would have never happened if Zorn had not finally allowed Devin more reps on the field.

Zorn was allowing Rock to bully him. If you go back and watch some of the Rock interviews he was being a smart azz about returning kicks. He was having issues with Devin. Devin was pizzed about not being allowed to return kicks. Zorn even said so in one of his interviews. He said that even though Devin was not returning kicks. He did not need to think he needed to wait on that before he started performing on the field. This was before Devin was given the oppurtunity to return kicks. If you watch all of the interviews you will get a real insight into what goes on behind the scene. Most of them are done as soon as the player walks off the field or out of the locker room. Most people on hear never watch them.If they had watched them, they would realize how Devin was being held back by Rock and Santana. Jim Zorn alloowed certain veterans to run roughshot over the other players.

Expect Carter to be around next year

According to this WaPo article, there’s not much chance of getting rid of Andre Carter unless we cut him. That seems foolish, since we would then get no compensation (other than a possible compensatory pick late in the 2011 draft) for a guy who just had the best season of his career and is right up there with Haynesworth for our best D-Lineman. Reid also mentions his relatively low salary this year — 1.3 mil in base salary (wow that’s low) plus a 3.5 mil bonus. The bonus isn’t pretty, but you pay it all in one lump sum sometime in the offseason and then you only have to pay him that very slim amount of money throughout the season. Even if he becomes simply a role-player/ package guy, it’s worth it to have a role-player of that level of talent for such a low amount of money. Also consider that he has voiced a desire to stay in Washington and that he has a no-trade clause in his contract. Getting him to waive it for the opportunity to play somewhere where he’d be used more is a possibility, but I personally would much rather find a way to put him in a role that would keep him happy and on the team. If he ends up playing only a third the number of snaps this year as last and still gets somewhere between 3.5 and 5 sacks, I’ll be happy. Keep in mind, he got 4.5 sacks in San Fran when they put him in a role he didn’t like and made him feel like they wanted him gone. If our coaches find a way to utilize him and make him feel welcome on the team, we should expect even more production than that.
