I will gladly pass the offseason trophy on to the Bears. Dawn of a new day Ladies and Gentlegerms. We are crossing into the realm of offseason afterthought, and I’m all for it.

Sounds good

The math doesn’t make sense though. Down to 70 mil, cut 63 mil, would have been 39 mil over the adj cap of 123 mil.

What Am I mising? Were any contracts accelerated? If so Danny just took a big black eye from him old buddy Vinny.

39 + 123 is 162mil. They cut 63 mil that leaves 99mil. But their down to 70 mil. That leaves about 30 Mil.????

by skinsymets on Mar 8, 2010 2:18 PM EST reply actions

bunch of factors

They cut $63 million in pro-rated salary, so I assume that means the cap hit for that total would be different. Plus there’s probably things like roster bonuses and the like factored in there. I’m gonna go ahead and assume John Clayton has good info on that kind of stuff. Of course, the Redskins are good at renegotiating contracts and moving money around to make it under the cap every year, so it probably wouldn’t have been such a high number if the Redskins had chosen to keep and renegotiate rather than simply cut.

by kseandoyle on Mar 8, 2010 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

FA Disaster

You gotta be kidding. We haven’t done anything at all (well, OK, one backup guard) this FA period except cut some players and not replaced them. It’s been a dead loss, we’ve not gotten any of the good players we need. Anybody who’s cheering the action so far – ask yourself, are we a better team now than we were before? You think losing Griffin, Smoot, Betts, with no replacements, is a gain? Why are you so anxious that we not spend money? It’s not yours or mine, it’s Dan’s. The Bears are probably playoff bound this year because they got a great QB last year and quality defense people this year (although I agree with everybody that we did not want Peppers). I worry that a disgusted Dan Snyder has gone from one extreme to another, from free spending to dirt cheap – at just the wrong time. Losing Pashos looks like "Penny wise, pound foolish’ – lost him over a few dollars. Allen says he has a plan, and Dan didn’t put him on a tight budget, but he hasn’t shown anything so far.

by Donnio1234 on Mar 8, 2010 2:22 PM EST reply actions

This year is only part one

We need not leap after the very few free agents that are out there this year. There are many many role players still available. There’s no need to rush. Also next year is going to be the largest free agency market in history. The market will be flooded with players. If you can show restraint this it bodes well for next. The Skins are letting the market come to them instead of setting it. That is great!

by RPMontana on Mar 8, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Think of all the money Dan saved

that can be spent on bringing in a #4 pick and a high second rounder. Not to mention any other high picks we may get if we move Carlos or Cooley, for example.

by Scott E on Mar 8, 2010 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Carlos yes

I think we’re also in prime position to just move back in the 2nd a couple of times and recoup a number of picks.

The 2010 NFL Free Agents list proves out your point -
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?positionId=9&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fnfl%2ffa%3fpositionId%3d9
You can select the position toward the upper left and get a list by position. There is no scarcity of CB, LB, or FS players that are unrestricted free agents.
Some proven restricted free agents would be safer choices than rookies since they have shown what they can do in the NFL. Trades might be the way to go with such players since a major effort should be made to avoid using draft picks.

YOU have got to be kidding

Are the Steelers going on a spending spree? You spring for a Peppers or a Dansby (or both) and in two years you have an overpaid, underperforming, disgruntled superstar. Stop me if you’ve heard this story before.

If you have any desire to see this team become a mainstay contender, they need to get their books in order and strengthen their foundation. Don’t freak out because there hasn’t been a big move. We need to make moves to get better, but if you look around the league, its not like we are getting left in the dust.

Haha

THE Tony Pashos! He was the missing piece!

by SSBlitz on Mar 8, 2010 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

Tony Pashos is VERY important

As of last night, he was one of the best offensive linemen remaining on the unrestricted free agent market. Never mind that several other free agent offensive linemen had already been signed to new contracts and that this year’s may or may not have been an extremely weak market for offensive linemen. Those are just people’s “opinions,” man. Signing the best free agents, no matter how bad they might be in the grand scheme, is a Washington institution! Just like free call girls and cocaine for freshman Senators on their first day! You take things like that away, and all you’re left with is low payrolls and cocaine-free Senators — in other words, anarchy!

by kseandoyle on Mar 8, 2010 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

Disapointed too BUT

We have Pashos’ old line coach. If he didn’t tell Allen to pay through the nose to get this guy, there must be a reason.

by RPMontana on Mar 9, 2010 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, cuz Pashos is so great

The Bears are not playoff bound anyway. They’re still not better than the Packers or Vikings. Chester Taylor is a good addition on their part, but they overpaid for Jay Cutler (who is not a “great” QB) and will be paying the dividends of that ugly transaction for years to come.

by Scott E on Mar 8, 2010 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

So we cut the salary in half and release the under performing dead weight from the roster…cuts that should have been made two years ago…We don’t pick up the high priced free agents (that will under-perform like the others we’ve picked up, I guarantee it (Archuletta, Lloyd, Sanders, Bowen, El, The list goes on)) and you think this is a bad thing? he finally listens to criticism and changes his act and you’re suspicious that it’s a gag? This free agency class is no better than any other, not to mention that you’re confusing stats with chemistry and that there are 11 guys on the field at any given time and there is a 52 man roster through the year. This team is not one guy away from a title. The title will not and has never been won in the off season.

a blend of chemistry, discipline, talent, system and luck wins the title. This team has been bankrupt on chemistry, discipline, system and luck for a while. Talent we’ve had and wasted over the years by over paying for guys in the off season and making splashes that put one player ahead of the team.

You are kidding yourself

if you think FA was the answer to most of our problems, especially the OLine. No one gives up OLine that is young and good. So we shore up the D with Foote and maybe a CB and/or FS in FA and draft for OLine and a running back.

Moss

I know it’s generally not a good idea to put your #1 WR back to return punts, but if Shanny and staff see enough improvement in Thomas, Kelly and Mitchell….why not….he’d kill it! Big if though.

by ILMskin on Mar 8, 2010 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah,

it’s a much better idea to put a liability back there to return punts. You protect your #1 WR doubly that way — not only does he not take the risk of getting injured on the punt return, but he also gets to stay on the sideline, since the punt was muffed! Good riddance, RandEl.

by kseandoyle on Mar 8, 2010 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

One less thing provoking me to smash my TV this season. Dude should have been gone last year. I REALLY hope Shanny Jr. can turn these recievers into TD makers!

by ILMskin on Mar 8, 2010 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

In his defense (a very little bit)

I didn’t have a problem with him lining up as a third receiver, even last year. But that was completely from a football perspective, and it didn’t forgive keeping him back there returning punts. As far as a payroll perspective, there was no excuse for keeping him.

by kseandoyle on Mar 8, 2010 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

I do wish we had gotten Rolle

Not that I wish we had gotten him for as much as the Giants ended up paying for him, but I would have liked having him on the team. But maybe I just feel that way because Snyder has taken 11 years to condition me to think that way. Maybe Rolle isn’t actually a sound investment. Certainly the fact that the Giants got him should be a warning sign — they’re panicking about their defense right now and their making a lot of rash decisions. Not saying that he won’t be good, but he certainly doesn’t deserve to be the highest-paid safety in the league.

by kseandoyle on Mar 8, 2010 5:49 PM EST reply actions

I only like Rolle cuz he's from the U.

We’ll find a FS to bring Landry into the box somewhere.

by SSBlitz on Mar 8, 2010 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

People yelling about us not signing anyone

I don’t see what all the panic is about. It’s not like with a few additions we’d be a playoff bound team anyways. I see the FO cleaning up the salary cap this year so they have the money to spend next year when there should be a lot more players. The 2011 season we might actually be able to contend. We can fix a good portion of the line this year and clean up the mess vinny made. Then next year sign some good people to reasonable contracts when we don’t have to give up picks for them.

by skinsnyankees on Mar 8, 2010 6:45 PM EST reply actions

Shaky Free Agency

Of course Pashos was not important on his own, but the experts said it was a very thin group of FA O-linemen at the start (partly due to the uncapped year deal), and most of the decent ones are gone already (no O-line is even visiting). Meanwhile, it’s almost impossible to go after RFAs because we can’t afford to give up draft picks. So although no one guy was important, getting some tackle would have been very helpful. As it is, we have to rely on the draft to beef up the O-line. I speculate that maybe they hope to head into the year with: (LT) Okung or other top draftee (Jones); (LG) Dockery; © Rabach; (RG) Williams or Hicks (Rinehart); (RT) Jones or Heyer (Hicks). I would have liked a stronger RT, but it won’t happen unless a lower round draft pick surprises. Anyway, my basic point is that the O-line was our main need, and one chance (FA) has passed, so we have to rely on the draft, and that in turn cuts the chance of using the high pick to get a QB. Skins – some would say that we could contend this year.

QB

Well anything that takes away a chance to get a QB I am all for. And anyone who thinks were going to be a contender is wishful thinking. We should be respectful this year but no contender.

by skinsnyankees on Mar 8, 2010 7:22 PM EST reply actions

yeah I could see us slipping into the playoffs with a 9-7 record or something this year before the D-switch

but now it looks like we are basically punting this year or else we’d be phasing into the 3-4 gradually like Parcells did with the Cowgirls.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 8, 2010 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

We will be three times as good as last year...

but our schedule is 4 times harder. Hopefully, attitude and fewer mistakes will make a big difference in our gaining respectability.

Also, no one knows enough to say they can be totally satisfied with JC. This season should be the turning point, one way or another, in his career. So sit back and enjoy the ride.

FA results

You all are right – it is too early to get depressed. A lot can happen – trades, new cuts, etc. Somebody just said the Colts released a starting O-lineman. To be clear – I don’t disagree with any of the cuts the Skins made, and did not want them to throw money at any of the big names out there (especially Peppers, and not, in fact, any defensive guy). So it’s been a good FA period for what they didn’t do. But I have to admit, I expected more action to beef up the O-line. It was a small class already and most of the top ones are gone. It sort of looks as if we’re going to have to load up in the draft, and that boxes us in.

by Donnio1234 on Mar 8, 2010 8:16 PM EST reply actions

It's certainly a concern

But you just aren’t going to find a quality OL starter through FA especially this year when everyone who would be unrestricted is restricted instead… you are basically left with the guys who are past their prime and haven’t convinced their former team for a longer term deal. Those guys are great for depth (and I’m sure we’ll sign a couple more Artis Hickses before were through)…it just reinforces the fact that if you want quality OL starters you need to draft them yourself.

by Boo. on Mar 8, 2010 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

Also Hicks plays 4 positions

We might be underestimating him a little bit. The FO might have just felt that while Hicks might be 90% of the RT that Pashos is, the ability to play all 4 positions makes him more valuable. I’m not gonna get super worked up that we didn’t sign Pashos or Clifton and I haven’t really heard of any other great O-linemen being available(though lilja is available now). I still really want us to see if the rumors about Gaither being available from the Ravens for a 2nd are true. That could make things so much easier and be quite a steal. Especially if we could offer them Doughty or Rogers to lower the draft pick we have to give them.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 8, 2010 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

I likee Carlos for Gaithers

Certainly an upgrade in the hands department. But seriously, this would allow us to really look at a (dare I say it) game changer in the draft along with cementing our line.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Mar 9, 2010 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

If there's one area I trust Shanahan, it's OL

If we needed Pashos that badly I think Shanny would have paid him. None of the OL available in early FA were anything special.

I still think the main part of our OL rebuilding has yet to come, and that’s how Shanny’s been planning it.

And yeah, it might take 2 off-seasons to rebuild this line. We haven’t drafted OL for most of the past decade, so we’re in a pretty big hole that will take a while to get out of. Hopefully we’ll draft our way out.

I think we will be serviceable this

upcoming season. Enough to have a running game and to implement a credible offense that will allow us to evaluate JC and the receivers/backs.

Next year we draft to be dominant and playoff worthy.
