Willie Parker & Maake Kemoeatu to Visit Redskins
OL Artis Hicks signed to 3-year deal. I'm guessing no one had him in the FA contest. Tony Pashos likely to sign with CLE after contract negotiations failed.
Update: It's Maake, not Chris Kemoeatu visiting (thanks ThaRake).

I love this new approach
We haven’t done anything stupid yet! Although I do think we should’ve gone after Rolle hard because Landry can’t cover and FS is our biggest need on defense.
I'm not booing Stephon Heyer, he's trying hard. I'm booing the fact that Stephon Heyer plays for us.

Definately don't trade for him.
There is talk that Buffalo outright releases him if no trade is worked out. This is where patience pays off as it may not be until July.
He is a tweener, drafted as a CB, but injuries and poor cover skills relegated him to FS, then SS. He is a better run defender than pass according to reports, so he may just end up being another strong safety. He lacks big play ability according to scouting reports. Some guys have all the talent and skills, and just can’t put it together. Whitner is one of those guys, he is still young though. He’s not worth a trade.
So glad we didn't go after Rolle
$37 million for someone who wasn’t even a star on one of the lower ranked defenses in the NFL? No thanks. This is a case of a guy saying he’s really good, and a team buying into it.
A. Rolle was a pro bowl player.
His contract is a record for safeties. I know Pro Football Focus does not give him a good overall rating. The NFL high lights can give a distorted view however.

I think the Cards made an upgrade by letting Rolle go and getting Rhodes from NYJ
To be fair to Rolle though he is still a work in process

I do like how we have been carrying out FA
Slowly, but surely. Willie Parker would be a good, temporary upgrade at RB as he could share carries with Portis until we have a draft that we could use such a pick on RB.
FS wise, we won’t get Sharper, because we just had a small youth purge. I thought Smoot could have moved to FS for us worst-case scenario, but we aren’t going after Sharper for sure now. They might be thinking Kareem Moore could really be somebody, or they could just think Landry is the right man for that spot. Hard to say, only time will tell.
Definitely liking the moves though. If we sign Foote, Parker, and Kemoeatu, and we are just continuing a good streak of a good FA.
And nothing says
Smoot could not come back at a minimum salary. Looking at the 10 players cut, he seemed to be the one which may have been just salary related at over 3 mil next year
Sorry to link to PFT.
Donte Whitner could be leaving Buffalo.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/07/whitners-future-with-bills-in-question/
Perfectly ok to link PFT, when it comes to Whitner
Kevin used his PFT source a month ago to state Whitner will be a Redskin next year
I try not to.
Since half the stuff that goes up there is unsupported speculation that will change by tomorrow. But in this case it reinforces the availability of Whitner for our secondary.
where is dan snyder’s checkbook when we need it? we overpay for people we dont need, but when they actually might help we won’t pay them enough. :P
nah, it's OK
we overpay for people we dont need,
That’s the old way of doing business. Our new business model is “Long Term.” Pashos would’ve been nice, but is her really worth getting into a bidding war for? I don’t think so. Hicks is no pro bowler, maybe not even a starter, but he still fills a need. Our real problem last year was OL depth. Truthfully, it’s kind of refreshing to me to see us get “beat out” in some offseason dealings. Maybe now we’ll stop hearing the Skins attached to every offseason acquisition.
My only problem with Pashos is that he is solely a RT
It’s all nice to say “Draft Okung and LT position is taken care of.”, but Okung or any LT we draft might need a year at RT first and then we have 2 RT’s that we paid good money for. Might be better to get a lesser guy who can swing between both spots.
by BayAreaBullet on Mar 7, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions
why would they need a year a RT
Let Okung take his lumps at LT. That’s what he has been his entire college career. Let Okung know what it means to be a LT in the NFC east. the round wont be easy but it will give him all the experience he needs to succeed moving forward.
by JeanBaptiste on Mar 7, 2010 10:23 PM EST up reply actions
Ouch
I agree, an LT taken at 4th overall should be expected to start playing at LT immediately. But if he fails to make the NFL transition smoothly and we don’t have a decent backup, DeMarcus Ware and JC are going to become very close.
The #1 tackle(Taken 2nd overall) taken last year
struggled at RT. There’s a good chance Okung could do it but also a chance he falls on his face and would be better off starting at RT and earning the LT spot. Also we don’t know if Okung is available so if we end up with another guy relying on them being the LT might be dicey.
by BayAreaBullet on Mar 7, 2010 11:46 PM EST up reply actions
I agree with your sentiment
of course it sounds better to have the guy ‘sit and learn." But if, even though a rookie, he is the best player at the position, then you have to start him. Remember, if we do get Okung, then he’s replacing Samuels, who started from day 1.
I realize the urgency just realize that there is no guarantee we will be able to draft a LT who can start from day 1
by BayAreaBullet on Mar 8, 2010 1:50 AM EST up reply actions
Agreed
but if we can’t then we’re in trouble, since we have no viable option at left tackle right now. I don’t know why they don’t keep Levi.
I have made the point that there is no guarentee also.
Yet there were a couple of 2nd rounders that did well from the 2009 draft. Left tackles end up getting penalized a lot, even the best – http://profootballfocus.com/by_position.php?tab=by_position&season=2009&pos=T&stype=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1. Negative, check out Eugene Monroe and positive Vollmer; Oher. Also look at Barry Sims who is an unrestricted free agent – old but good, not great.
by Jefferson1935 on Mar 8, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah and while I still think Smith and Monroe will be good down the line
They were unable to really do much at LT their first year. If we drafted Okung I would expect him to start at LT as well but we might not have the chance to draft him and he could still flop. I mean we could just throw a dude out there and let him fail week in and week out to learn but we wouldn’t learn much about JC, the recievers or anyone else on the offense if LT is a turnstile under some rookie.

That why I liked your post in favor of Gaither for a 2nd rd pick.
He is already a proven NFL journeyman. It will be hard for the Skins to get a better OL in the 2nd rd.

you’re totally right
i was saying more that it’s weird to be a redskins fan hearing that a player left redskins park without some huge deal, when it was someone we wanted. usually if we want someone, we get them, no matter the cost (haynesworth, etc.)
I am having a hard time trying to figure out what their thinking is.
I understand cutting players due to age and salary. I understand not signing expensive free agents in planning for 2011 and beyond. The team does need to get younger and build from there. Yet most of these free agents are over 30, and value plays only. Parker makes no sense to me at all as does the TE from KC. Hicks is a nice back-up Guard for this year and a good clubhouse guy, but he should not be starting regularly. I was hoping Rhinehart would get a chance to develope. Kemoeatu has been a disappointment and an injury concern. He plays NT, and that is a need but with his age and concerns, I would have rather stuck with Montgomery and tried to develope him until a draft pick can be brought on. As for Foote, this to me is a long-term downgrade as I would rather stick with McIntosh. Why sign a 30+ year old guy to take a starting spot from a younger player and stunt his developement? How is this building for the future?
It just feels like Allen and Shanahan are bent on sending a message throughout the league and their fan-base about who is really in charge now. And I get that, but I don’t see how any of these moves are improving the team or building for the future.

Kemoeatu is a guard

I think Foote
would be a good signing. Signing him doesn’t mean Rocky won’t play (if we keep him, that is), it just means both guys would have to earn their spot. Which is good, because it means the status quo won’t cut it around here anymore. I feel like I’ve heard that somewhere before. As for Parker, I’m ok with that too. We still need at least 2 more RB’s and we won’t get both (if any) in the draft. Hell, we don’t even know FOR SURE if Portis is gonna be here. Personally, between the two, I’d rather have Parker. I still wouldn’t mind bringing in Westbrook for a workout. I know he has some mileage (as do Parker and Portis, but he’s torn us up enough times to at least warrant a look. Obviously, the ideal scenario would be for Shanahan to unleash his magic again and uncover a 4th or 5th round gem at RB, but we can’t count on that for one thing, and for another, it’s doubtful he would start the season at #1 anyway.
All seem like reasonable moves to me. No agenda.
Cut a lot of dead/replaceable/overpaid weight.
Bring in affordable warm bodies that know the system or are needed for depth.
I think Shanahan is just taking his time reworking a roster that needs a lot of work.

Damn
The Redskins are not winning the off-season, well maybe this time it will pay off with wins during the season, because a real plan is in place.
Very happy with how free agency has gone in 1 WEEKEND:
1 FA is not over,
2 Kemoeatu is not signed
3. Pashos could still become a Redskin
4. Parker would compliment Portis well for the next year or two
5. Foote is not signed, but last I checked when the Redskins Defense uses 4 LB sets, the Redskins will need another one or two on the staff
Yup. No news is good news.
This team needs youth and affordable contracts. IE not the big names available in early FA

Well, I guess we can agree to disagree.
I just think that Parker is done, a 2 down back that should not be on the field with Portis, he doesn’t block, not a receiving threat, not nearly the runner Clinton is. Get a 3rd down receiving back if anything. I would rather have a 4th or 5th rd back along with an undrafted guy getting the time over Parker. As far as Foote goes, he would be a inside backer to replace Rocky. Rocky rides the pine, not learning the new 3-4 defense while a more experienced 3-4 backer plays for 2 years. Foote would be a great pick-up if the team was close, but not one that is rebuilding.
The team could have sent a strong message by cutting Rhinehart and Westbrook with their drunken arrests and Portis with his act, but no; those guys are safe while Campbell, McIntosh, Rogers, Golsten, and others are left flapping in the breeze. Bringing in older players to take younger guy’s spots on a rebuilding team doesn’t make sense to me. The team already has many young players, let them play, see what they can do, and then next year decide to replace them. But for heaven’s sake, replace them with younger players with upside.
I think you're jumping the gun a bit.
Foote might end up a back up if Rocky picks up the 3-4 well. I like the signing for veteran and winning experience.
Also, don’t hold your breath for NFL teams to dump players over drunken arrests or popping off on the radio.

lol johnny dee and good points all. parker is not even the one-cut back type back that shanahan favors. i would be surprised if they sign him. somebody else who is a better fit will be available. and i think he likes aldridge since we kept him close by for two years waiting on mike to arrive.

Agree. Parker is mostly done these days
He’s a depth signing at most

Parker has been done
I go to school near pittsburgh and unfortunately have to watch all the steelers games. Parker hasn’t been productive the past few seasons. He’s too timid of a runner for Shanahans style, and he has definitely lost a step. Mewelde moore was playing in front of him, so at this point I hope they would only sign him for depth.
We're bringing in Ma'ake Kemoeatu, not Chris
They’re brothers. Ma’ake is the recently released NT from Carolina. Chris is a guard for the Steelers, he’s under contract with them for a few more years.
Why not both?
And then bring in Foote, Fast Willie and Ryan Clark and rebuild the whole Steelers championship squads. I’m sure JC can do a decent Big Ben impression.
thanks...fixed that.

is it me or do you think it is odd we could not sign pashos? he is a starter and signs for 3yr and 10mm with cle. we sign hicks as a backup for 3yr and 9mm. the difference is only 1mm over 3yrs- 300k? i know we are exercising more discipline but that seems a little extreme.

Maybe it was something he said?
Not the first time someone blew an interview….
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
His contract might be structured different so he would get more money
It’s doubtful that Hicks see’s all 9 Mil. People have also been saying the reason the Niners and us didn’t sign him was becuase they were looking for a swing tackle.

Any updates?
Have either of these or Foote been to Redskins park yet?
I don’t support signing Willie Parker but I’m not opposed to it either. He’s old and on his last leg like Portis, I don’t like the sound of having 2 over the hill running backs with Aldrige as our third.
The Kemoeatu puzzles me. I understand we need a true NT if we are actually switching to a 3-4, but it doesn’t sound like this guy is anywhere near being back to full health and an achilles problem is definitly something to be concerned about especially if he’s had two procedures on it and still not running after 8 months. He would more than likely come cheap though.
As for Foote, I think it would be a great signing considering the lack of depth at LB. None of us know how Fletcher or Rocky will be in the 3-4, so having a player like Foote as an insurance policy would be more than ideal.
Fletch has played in the 3-4
I’m not worried about him, but the more LBs we have that no the schemes the more we will help Rocky – if he will pipe down and listen.
