8 Things to Expect This Season: Big and Bad

So we've seen FA so far, and I think the major movement is done. Rex Grossman, Larry Johnson, and that sums up our offseason, but, I think there is a lot to learn from these fews moves about what is in store this season.

Star-divide

  1. Expect a Ravens-esque Defense: Giant D-linemen, tackling machines inside, pass rushing specialists outside, and an aggressive set of DBs. We are missing one DE, and potentially an OLB, but don't be surprised when some trades come around (Carter for a 3-4 DE) and some players step up (Chris Wilson at OLB).
  2. Shanahan and Allen are running the show: Not even an offer to Julius Peppers, Karlos Dansby, or Antrel Rolle? It is obvious that Shanahan and Allen are looking to build chemistry, demand respect, win games, and probably a championship sooner then any of us can predict. While most people think we are gonna stay down, maybe we pull a Miami Dolphins, an Atlanta Falcons, or just a good old original Washington Redskins. Watch out though, because I don't think you should expect another 4-12 season.
  3. We may have one of the best coaching staffs in the NFL: Mike Shanahan is carefully evaluating talent along with Bruce Allen. Kyle Shanahan came off of one of the most productive offenses in Houston. Jim Haslett, as mentioned in #1, is working on building an even better defense from one of the most consistently good defenses in the pros. We are a team that could make something out of nothing with this coaching staff.
  4. The Coaches are demanding respect: People wanted to cut Clinton Portis, but don't you think it is funny how he hasn't said a bad thing about Shanahan, while he had nothing but anger for Zorn...? He respects Shanahan because Shanahan is a winner, and if Portis doesn't want to be a Redskin, Shanahan doesn't want Portis. If a player wants their job, they have to prove they want it. Larry Johnson will be successful in Washington because he is going to have respect for Shanahan, because Johnson will be out of a job too fast if he doesn't.
  5. Rex Grossman changes nothing: Look, the coaches are smart enough not to start Rex Grossman, we learned that because they didn't go after a bunch of FAs who were going to go back to sleep after they got big money. Jason Campbell will either undeniably have the spot, or a rookie will. I don't expect Campbell to stay around a season if we draft a 1st round rookie. We may draft a late QB, a project 2nd-3rd-4th round QB, or a starter QB, but Grossman is not changing anything, he is only bringing youth as a reliable 2nd stringer.
  6. We will draft a LT: The only question is in what round. 1st or 2nd round is obvious, but no logical person can say we won't draft a LT, because the hole there is probably about as gapping as a black hole. There are a number of prospects (Though I personally love the idea of Okung) out there in the 1st and 2nd round that have potential to be great. Whatever this staff does I know is the right move.
  7. Trades are just waiting to happen: Fred Davis, Chris Cooley, Santana Moss, Jason Campbell, Carlos Rogers, Chris Horton, Reed Doughty, LaRon Landry. Tell me you can't see at least two of these guys not being Skins next year. We are rebuilding, but we don't have to spend three drafts rebuilding when we are a couple easy moves away from being a much better team.
  8. The Draft is going to be the best day of the year: This is the day everything changes. How are the Redskins gonna set the tone? Trade down and grab multiple prospects such as a Bruce Campbell in the 1st, Charles Brown in the 2nd, and Colt McCoy/Tim Tebow in the 2nd? Will they remain safe and go with the obvious, Russell Okung pick? Will they decide it is time to change the face of the franchise and draft the real deal, Sam Bradford? While there are certain players that would be a big mistake to draft, I know the Redskins Front Office knows what they are doing. I expect a big impact from whoever we get in the 1st, QB, LT, DT, or S. It is gonna be exciting only having to watch 3 picks before the Skins this year...

great post...

But #1 is off the mark a bit….

"Now, I’ve talked with Coach [Jim] Haslett and I understand that this 3-4 scheme is nothing like that Baltimore Ravens scheme and what I experienced in 2005," -Andre Carter

http://www.homermcfanboy.com/2010/03/11/carter-addresses-new-position-scheme/

"I am excited about starting 2009. We are looking forward to an outstanding year. We're on our way. We have a lot of healthy players this year." - Vinny Cerrato

Well,

I am a definitely a tad off the mark, and glad you posted that, but nonetheless, at least personnel wise, I expect it to be rather similar. I made the comparison a lot because of Big Al moving to DE and being a lot like Haloti Ngata. Then, comparisons like Fletcher – Lewis, Orakpo – Suggs, Landry – Landry, fit pretty well.

Obviously though, scheme wise, as dr says below, it’s the Redskins defense.

by BigOLinemen on Mar 18, 2010 5:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Very well, and Recommends all around
  1. is off because it’s a Redskin’s Defense, and it should be very special but it will have it’s own identity and the identity will become REDSKINS!

by dr WNC on Mar 17, 2010 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

The D will be Ravenesque in that it will be aggressive

It will be Redskinesque in terms of unique playmakers and the carnage that will be wrought on opposing offenses.

You also left out our new NT Ma’ake K.

Good point on the coaches demanding respect. They are also demanding respect from the players’ agents who come calling and other FOs. No more lollapalooza paydays for agents and players at the expense of Danny. And no more free draft picks to seal the deal, I hope, when it comes to trade time.

High marks all around.

Scott, Lets go back a little bit. I guess you do recall when I talked what our teams biggest problem was? The biggest problem was Jim Zorn was a pansy and allowed certain players to run over him. The players did not respect him so he lost control

of the locker room. It has not been a surprise hearing from D. Hall and others about players not respecting Jim Zorn. If you really watch the player interviews that are posted during the season you could tell they did not respect him. Rock was a big locker room cancer. He held the progress of Devin Thomas back. He kept crying to Zorn about staying on the kick return team. It was crazy when Zorn blasts Devin Thomas for not performing well as a receiver Zorn said that it should not take Devin returning kicks to help improve his game as receiver. But what happened, when Devin started returning kicks he started playing more agressive on offense.

by LETJASONPASS on Mar 18, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Did someone hit the rewind button? LOL

Yes, I remember all that. As I recall, I was delusionally reluctant optimistically holding back on my opinion of Zorn and the locker room as it looked like the players were giving good effort (for the most part) on the field and I had no hard corroborating information.

As it turns out, Coach Z was a disappointment in almost every way – still a class guy – and I hesitate to use the word “pansy.” Some have said that there are “buddy” coaches and that there are “task master” coaches. Both can be successful, but more often in the pros you see the latter. Hence we have Shehannygans to play with going forward. I’m fine with that so far.

Good post

But the #1 change I expect is having the entire team filled with a passion for winning. We just didn’t have that last year.

by aFan4Life on Mar 18, 2010 1:17 PM EDT reply actions

I got the distinct impression that many had

a passion for showing up. It is payday, after all.

Nice post BigO

I think the LT in the 1st is a more viable option for us right now, I just don’t know it it will be Okung. We may have to take Trent Williams, which will be fine by me. His spead, agility and explosive prove he can handle the position.

On an off note, I may be in the minority, but I believe we should sign Shawn Andrews ASAP.

by Tiller56 on Mar 18, 2010 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah

1st round wise, Okung, Campbell, and Williams are all great with me. Baluga is okay, but I think Okung, Campbell, and WIlliams, have the, like you said, speed, agility, and explosiveness necessary. Any of them are fine by me, and trading down is a great move.

by BigOLinemen on Mar 18, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't get...

When people say there isn’t any other tackle worth the #4 other than Okung. If Okung is gone, why shouldn’t we take another of the top tackle prospects? Every mock draft I have seen have like 8 OTs going in the first round. Should it be thought of as a “reach” if a guy is "supposed to be taken at #10 and he goes at 4?

by mdm1185 on Mar 25, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Great job BigO.

The only one I disagree with is draft day being the best day. To me, it’s always opening day. SPEAKING OF OPENING DAY, has anyone seen our schedule????

Ouch…

by J.Cash on Mar 18, 2010 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

Now

I can definitely agree with opening day being the best day, but I just feel like whatever Shanahan and Allen do, it will be great. I’m no Tebow fan, but they could make such a project quarterback into somebody. Just think what they can do with an NFL ready prospect…

But, opening day IS when we say said results.

nice points except for drafting a QB part

picking a QB in the first two rounds of this years draft is one of the stupidest things we could do with our picks. bradford is not the real deal. best case scenario he will be like chad pennington, which is not what you spend top 5 draft picks on. Jason Campbell is a good starter. Stick with him and let Shanahan mold him into a great quarterback.

Personally

I’m expecting Snyder to go all the way with this "revamping the franchise the way the fans want to see it. This will include:

  • $5 parking
  • $4 hot dogs (w/fries)
  • $3 beers
  • $2 sodas
  • $1 programs

and FREE seat cushions that are burgundy on one side and yellow on the other, so we can color coordinate The Wave.

Oh yeah, and get my damned attendant to start taking orders in the Club section every quarter again.

The wave went around the lower bowl like 15 times, it was hilarious.

but faithfully continued the wave with the lower bowl as though everyone around us hadn’t lost interest at about the 4th go-round

CJ, can you add a local hotel???

I get so tired of seeing the empty lots and Landover Mall looking like a dump. Does anyone know what land development projects are taking place for that area???

by J.Cash on Mar 23, 2010 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Great post.

I agree with all of em.

I’ve been thinking about the new defense look and how much it will look like the Ravens’ too.

by SSBlitz on Mar 19, 2010 9:49 AM EDT reply actions

Our defense

is going to have alot of ups and downs this season. Switching to a 3-4 is going to be a pretty tough switch. Peoples roles are changing and with that comes growing pain. I seriously doubt we come out of the gate with a dominante defense. We’ll show flashes of what could be, but I don’t see it beign a consistent thing.

Our defense was a bright spot on a horrible team last year, let’s not jump the gun and call them dominate. It can’t just be blamed on the coaching scheme, it was the players too. We have a long way to go before we see a dominate Defense out there but I believe we have the potential.

by travisjh86 on Mar 19, 2010 10:30 AM EDT reply actions

Well stated

Remember that neither Rome, nor the Ravens D, was built in a night (or was it a day?). Oh that’s right, the former didn’t have flashlights—silly me.

by landuin on Mar 19, 2010 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

But the Roman Empire would've been built a lot quicker.

If they’d started with the entire roman army from day 1.

One big name FA i would have liked to have

Antrelle Rolle. He is disgusting. Him at FS and LaRon at SS would be the hardest hitting most athletic most disgusting safety tandem ever.

by tw10 on Mar 20, 2010 3:19 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed

I would have loved to have Rolle, but this new organization isn’t overpaying for anyone. They aren’t gonna give money to someone who wants money. They are gonna give money to someone who wants to play football for the Washington Redskins. Rolle clearly did not.

I can't wait until Landry

returns to form and makes you guys eat your words. I can’t wait.

by DoWork on Mar 22, 2010 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

and which form would that be?

Seriously, other than his rookie year, when has he even approached the expectations of a top 10 pick? I think guys live off of his pre-draft highlight film, and a few big hits here and there. But the real staples of his game are getting burnt deep and hitting guys 3 yards out of bounds. Trust me, I would love to see him become a consistent playmaker. Then I could justify to myself wearing the jersey that I bought his rookie year.

I think people are still entranced by his pre-draft highlight film, and maybe a few big hits here and there over the last 3 years. Unfortunately, the most memorable play of his career was his imitation of a speedbump on the Brandon Marshall run. But for me, the most memorable moment of his career was watching him spear Matt Ryan out of bounds, then walk away after D. Hall got rag dolled coming to his defense. It just showed me that he’s real tough when a guy is defenseless, but when the blows come his way, he disappears.

by CJHutch on Mar 22, 2010 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I respectfully disagree

He has every physical tool necessary and the man is a competitor. Properly placed this year I believe he will once again thrive, as he did in his rookie year. I’m calling it, and I can’t wait until it happens..

by DoWork on Mar 22, 2010 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I completely agree that

He has every physical tool necessary

But, sorry, I just don’t see the rest. Yes, he looked like I budding star in his rookie year, but has showed me nothing concrete since.

by CJHutch on Mar 22, 2010 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t wait either. Do you think I like to see the guy we’ve spent a first round draft pick on fail as miserably as he has?

He’s a beast, sure, but he either misses most of his hits or fails to take down the guy with his hits. He needs to get back to basics, wrap the guys up ESPECIALLY in his open field tackling.

Hopefully now he won’t have to cover as often, cause they’ll just stick him with a guy doing a double move and 9 times out of ten Landry’ll break his ankles trying to turn around and catch the receiver.

In the meantime, I’ve got a bottle of Grey Poupon waiting for me to eat my words.

Suspend Colin Campbell!

by snowburnt on Mar 22, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I will give the new guys credit for being consistant.

They have established a wage scale in their minds, and will not exceed it.
It looks like they want to incentivize all their contracts to pay for future performance and effort. I agree with their philosophy, and impressed thus far that they are firm in their dealings. They definately are looking further into the future than anyone else associated with this franchise has done in over a dozen years. I personally would like to see more guys walking through their doors getting some looks, but obviously their numbers are not close to what these other players are looking for.
It seems that in the future, if you want to play for Shanahan and the Redskins, you are going to have to work hard at it and be productive for as long as you are here. It’s hard to get stars and keep your stars with this mentality, but it is a sound philosophy. As a future warning to skin fans, if they maintain this philosophy, expect to lose current players when their contracts end as they will likely go elsewhere for guaranteed dollars. Don’t get too attached.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 20, 2010 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

Many teams have given their own RFA

short term contracts this year. Even a 3 year contract seems long now. Until the FO has more on field play to look at with the offensive and defensive schemes they are correct in their approach. Johnny, like you have said in other posts, the 2009 season was not one that could be used that well for evaluating the individual players on the team.
