What does the Grossman signing mean?
Redskins sign QB Rex Grossman: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AhEg3XTIVVjTNP0y92cm32c5nYcB?slug=ap-redskins-grossman
To me, this can only lead to one of two outcomes:
1) The Skins are not drafting Jimmy Clausen. He'd get starter money, JC is at least lower-tier starting quality, and they didn't bring in Grossman to be a #3 QB. Grossman was Shanahan's #2 in Houston, and he's not gonna sign on now to be his #3. There isn't room on the roster for all three. I like this scenario.
2) The Skins are going to deal Campbell and draft Clausen. If we're gonna draft Clausen, we're gonna ditch JC. Not sure if someone thinks he's worth a first round tender, or if we'd have to sign and deal him for a #2. And if we ditch JC, I don't see our staff going into the season with Grossman starting and a low rounder or low level FA as the backup. I don't really like this scenario because I think Clausen will suck. But if he turns out good and we get extra picks, it's a great decision.
There's always the possibility of something else happening, but I feel, with pretty good certainty, that Grossman's signing means that we're going to follow one of these two scenarios.
What do you guys think?

This is
the first move by the new regime that I really don’t like.
Unless Rex is going to be our #2. But by NO means should Campbell be replaced by Rex Freaking Grossman.
I keep trying to reset my password to "penis", but it keeps telling me "too short".
Agreed
I think Campbell is easily better and I don’t want Grossman starting. That being said, I think he’s a decent backup. I’m just going to assume that they won’t start Grossman (that Shanahan isn’t a fool), which makes me okay with this signing.
you know what....
I have no idea what the hell this means…… or what any of our off season means……..
option 3
Shanahan saw this as a move to add depth and competition. This really doesn’t impact the draft options at all. They could still draft a QB and cut Colt or they could keep Colt and grab OL.
One thing to keep in mind is that the WRs in Chicago have never been anything to rave about so it’s possible that Grossman is better than what his stats reflect.
If we draft Clausen and keep JC and Grossman...
Who do you see as the number 3 QB? It would have to be Grossman, right? Clausen will be making too much money to be #3. JC is too good to be #3.
Grossman’s old job was #2 for Shanahan, so I don’t think they signed him to be #3. I don’t think Grossman would have signed on for that kind of a demotion, either. And even though Rex certainly isn’t anwhere close to great (or even good), I think he’s probably too good (and will be too well paid) to be a #3. I guess we might have a clearer picture of his role when the contract details come out. And it’s an uncapped year, so I guess they could overspend on a 3rd QB if they really wanted to.
I actually think Clausen would be the #3 in that scenario...
I understand that he would be, by far, the best-paid #3 in the league. However, I think most of us can agree that we probably won’t make the playoffs this year. I like to think I’m optimistic, but I don’t think we were Hicks/LJ/Grossman/Ryan/Kemoeatu away from being a contender last season. As far as I can see, the O-line still isn’t where it needs to be (okung-brown/pouncey in the first two rounds could change that). Thus, let clausen learn the system for a year and let him start in year 2. He would be ready at that point, the line could be fixed better by then, and in the meantime, JC (whom I like and want to be the starter when we are good again) would take another year’s worth of beatings behind that ridiculous line.
I suppose that could happen...
But if we do that, and if it’s a rebuilding year, with very little chance of playoffs (which I agree with), why not just unload Campbell now? I don’t think that another losing season of getting pounded behind a junk line (since we drafted QB instead of OL in the 1st) will do anything to help raise JC’s trade value. It just puts more wear and tear on him and further removes him from the time when he was fairly successful. I feel like we might be able to get a 2nd rounder for him this year, but not as much next year. If we snag Clausen and admit that its a rebuilding year, why not get max trade value for JC and just start Clausen or Grossman (if we want to groom Clausen and save him from punishment)?
Note: I’d rather keep JC and draft Okung, another OL, or one of the DTs.
Ok
I agree w/ keeping JC and drafting Okung, and I can see your point. If Shanahan truly wants to go in a different direction at qb, and trades JC for a 2, I would much prefer taking okung in round one, then mccoy/lefevour/whoever in round two, along with another o-lineman with the extra pick. that way, you accomplish both an o-line rebuild and a new qb at the same time. You can still have Grossman start the season, then bring in the new guy when/if grossman fails/ o-line gels.Thoughts?
Option 3 is the best.
Still think it is a waste to pick a QB this year with limited picks, but Rexxy fills a hole at backup QB. As far as I’m concerned that is all we need to do to cement the QB position for this year and move on. What’s not to like?
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Flash Backs !!!
We have had no luck in drafting QB`s in the first rd, and would hate to see a repeat mistake. Some teams have had some good ones but I think that some of the moves sent a team backwards. You never know how a pick might turn out but if we can fix our horrible line first we may find it easier to find a project in the later rds. or next years draft.
Congratulations Washington...
Bears fan here.
I’m just wanted to come on over and tell you congrats…..
Grossman is a class act, who got the shaft in ChiTown. He had to deal with the worse offensive coordinator in recent history (and a guy the Bears somehow thought they should hire twice) Ron Turner. Grossman (like the other 30 QBs that have revolved through Chicago took a lot of the blame for mistakes that were a direct result of Ron Turners incompetence and horrid play calling.
Shanahan is one of the best offensive minds of this generation. I would be down on ol’ Sexy Rexy just yet. The guy has the physical tools to start. If Shanahan has actually developed Rex, you guys might be surprised by how good he can be. He led us to a Super Bowl while throwing more TD than INTs and throwing the 3rd most TDs in Chicago history. And he did it with quite possibly the stupidest OC in the history of the sport.
I don’t know if he can recover from his time in Chicago and the Mauling he took from the fans and the media, but if he can, you might have just found yourself a very good QB.
All the best wishes to Grossman. I hope he earns the starting job, and slaps the Cowgirls around like the Brownies (no offense to the Girl Scouts intended) they are…………
And best wishes to the ‘Skins now. I’ll be rooting for Rex, so I’ll be rooting for the ’skins by default……unless their facing the Bears, of course ;)

Thanks for the good info, T-Train
I have news for you, though. Coach Z could rival the best of the worst playcallers in history. Bad scheme, misuse of player skills, p-poor plays called at the wrong time, and horrible clock management. But that’s just the good part. I haven’t seen professional football or even college ball played so ridiculously poorly.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Ha ha on that, I perceive you're right.
This just in from 980 yesterday. The topic was Redskins QBs, past and present, and the categories were two: (completion percentage for one year, and QB rating for one year). The guys at 980 said JC ranked number 1 and 3 (or 3 and 1, I can’t remember) in those categories.
Only a truly elite QB is going to get better numbers than this, and I don’t see anyone being available right now in the draft or available to sign before day one of the season that fits neatly into the category of an elite QB.
Why cannot this city SEE what they have, and stop wishing for something better? The old ‘headsman’ mentality is getting really old, esp when you look at JC’s stats last year in one of the worst-case scenarios for a QB—awful play calling and awful OLine.
It doesn't mean anything
This move was predicted the moment Kyle Shannahan became the OC, we’ve been talking about it for over a month. Why is everyone getting all hot and bothered about it? Stop trying to make every offseason move as a “peering into the mind” of the FO. It’s silly. All this is is a vet that knows the system, just like every free agent we’ve signed this offseason.

I like Grossman as the backup to Jason
Better than Delhomme and just about anyone else out there.
I hope the Shanny’s have learned that systems need to be tailored to the players they have. They are force fitting a little bit with going to the 3-4 on D. I hope they realize what they have in Jason and work with him as the starter for this year while having a good backup in Sexxy Rexxy.
If Jason can’t win with the Shannys, then I say draft the best QB we can find next year.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
This means nothing
Redskins only had one QB. Now they have 2. I don’t count Brennan until the coaches say they’re keeping him.
strange signing ?
what i think is they will draft okung and try and draft a qb in the second round maybe a pike or lefvevour colt might be cut. or it can go they trade campbell start grossman and draft bradford and groom him while grossman starts. to me that makes no sense becasuse as bad as they want campbell gone he is better then rex freaking grossman ..
wow
I am willing to bet any amount of change in my pocket that Campbell is gone and Grossman is the backup for Clausen/Bradford.
it means
that there are now 3 QB’s under contract, including one that has a year in the offensive system that K. Shanahan used last year. Reading anything else into it is like interpreting the smile of a beautiful woman when she sees you.
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....
Dude...
that means she’s totally into you. You should go talk to her.
and then she calmly informs you
That your fly is open…..

Mentor
I think Grossman is going to play along the same role that Collins did when Saunders came in, another offensive coach in pads. Grossman got good reviews from Shanahan last year in picking up the offense. I think he therefore is hoping he can help teach it to Campbell, Brennan, and whomever (if) they bring another guy in.
Can’t hurt. Just like Whisenhunt’s philosophy, competition t every position breeds production.
This could be the same as
Saunders bringing in Todd Collins. A guy with experience in the offense to teach it to the new guys and be the #2.
Or it could be the prelude to a Campbell deal and Bradford or Claussen in the draft. If we can get a 2010 3rd and conditional 2011 pick which is no later than 4th and as high as a 2nd for Jason I’d be ok with the following draft…
1. Top QB available
2. Top T available
3. Top RB or FS
4. Top RB or FS
5. Top interior OL
7. BPA
The only problem is we are running out of teams looking for quarterbacks. Perhaps the Vikings if Favre declares his intentions before the draft? Bills? Rams? Seahawks? We may have missed the boat if the plan is to deal Jason.
Grossman
It could mean little, he’s just a backup to replace Todd. But I thought at first that it could be one of two things: (1) he could be here to compete with JC, meaning JC and probably Colt stay, and they do not draft Bradford or Clausen. Or (2) He’s here because they intend to try to trade JC (for draft picks to be used on the O-line), and in any case, draft Bradford or Clausen, so that Rex would be competition for the rookie and fallback starter if JC is traded and the rookie isn’t ready. I.e., insurance. Everybody assumes that Grossman isn’t as good as JC, but we don’t really know what the Shanahans are thinking. Shanahan has never endorsed JC as the starter, and has stressed competition for all the jobs, and for quarterbacks mentioned “all the QBs”, which I took to include Colt Brennan. Almost everybody on HH sneers at Colt, but he is still on the roster, and Shahahan said he never watched him play, so is presumably open minded about him. Incidentally, I think that Colt did as well in college as virtually any of the current QBs in the draft except Bradford and Clausen, and also did well in his rookie year (in brief appearances) I also think that Jim Zorn did not like him because he didn’t like his throwing motion, and possibly because he felt that Colt was not sufficiently diligent in changing it. Colt’s brief shaky performances last year could have been partly due to trying to change his throwing motion, along with receivers running all the wrong routes and getting no protection from an abysmal third string line. So I hope both Rex and Colt are given a chance to compete with JC or the great rookie. No question that Colt is a longshot – 20-1 or more.
No QB looks good
playing for Lovie Smith…Rex has played well at times
Grossman coming in.....
was, in my opinion, for 2 reasons. First, the threat of competition……..this signing is a way to provide some percieved pressure at the QB position…..just like LJ to CP. Second….and more importantly…..is as a teacher. He has worked with Kyle in Texas for the last season…….if he can come in and provide a solid back-up…..while helping whatever QB’s are on the roster pick up some of the details of the offense they are trying to get going…..it’s a win win considering he is signed for one year at the veteran minimum!
IT MEENS WE WANT TEW GET RID OFF JC CAWS HE SUKZ AND GROSSMAN NICE OR CLAUSEN
Im kidding. We signed Grossman because Todd Collins passed awa-I mean retired.
Todd Collins
is a solid backup, just not in the new system
The big difference between Shanahan/Allen is they look for players to fit the system instead of just players.
Vinny kept Collins because he was a solid backup even though he did not fit the (lack) of offense Zorn was trying to implement. That’s been the problem the last 10 years,
Time to build a team, Grossman knows the offense so he’s in…
