If we pass on Okung for Clausen...

I will straight burn all my Redskins garb.. no joke. If we pass on Okung if hes there(who is a STUD) he will be a starting LT for 10 years. You can not pass on him and take Clausen who is a reach at  #4. At first I thought there would be NO way we'd pass on Okung if he was there for Clausen, but know Mel Kiper is pushing Clausen to the Redskins all over the Tv and I'm getting nervous. We better not pass on Okung if hes there.

I hope it makes you happy

I just picked Okung for the Redskins in the BBV mock draft as even a Giants fan knows you need to improve your OL.

Any pointers who or what position I should target in round 2.

I was thinking one of the safeties or do you want another OL?

by G Fan in England on Mar 16, 2010 6:32 PM EDT reply actions

LB, RB or FS if there isn't a great tackle off the board

Shannahan can pick up another lineman in the later rounds, but if a 1st rounder drops to the 2nd i think we take him. If we are switching to the 3-4, we need another linebacker that can play the middle and another RB for depth. Since we just signed LJ, I think we go LB before RB.

by Nobetterthenbob on Mar 16, 2010 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks

I will keep an eye open for a good LB/OL/S for you.

by G Fan in England on Mar 16, 2010 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Guard, particuarly RG

then the nightmare known as Heyer can become a memory and stick Hicks at RT.

I think we will wait until the 4th Rd before we go RB personally, but I could be completely wrong, I just thing with Blount, McKnight and potentially Gerhardt being there at Rd 4 I tip we wait

I would suggest

OL Veldheer from Hillsdale or LB Witherspoon out of Mizzou if he’s still available.

I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

I hope we go Oline in both rounds 1 and 2.. I want a STUD right tackle in round one and a STUD left tackle or guard in round 2, then we should take a running back like Mcluster who is a speedy back in the 4th round..Mcluster could return punts as well..

by ImFROMdc88 on Mar 16, 2010 6:47 PM EDT reply actions

Imfrom...

We need both, but most on HH seem to think we need an LT more than a RT, and they are scarcer, so we should get the LT first. But I’d go with (QB) Bradford at #4 if he was available, but don’t know about Clausen. We can get tackles in various ways, including free agency, trades (like for Gaither) and lower round draft choices, but there is no other way to get a really top QB (although we could try McCoy in the second round or Tebow or Lefevour in the 4th round, but those guys would only be backups for at least a year).

by Donnio1234 on Mar 16, 2010 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Tebow

I am convinced New England will take him, they have about 3 or 4 2nd Rd picks this year, and can afford to take a flyer on him, then use him as a Utility player, sort of Like a Cribbs without the speed, but with an arm,.

They will put him in a TE, RB, FB, and some sort of Wildcat type situations, then if he excels in the Wildcat, and Tom Brady comes back strong, trade him to a Jacksonville or someone for a first rd pick in the next couple of years.

If he doesnt excel in the Wildcat, they have a high character, multi skilled player who gives New England the options to make their Offence a little less Vanilla (amazingly good Baskin and Robbins Vanilla, but Vanilla all the same)

I would be pissed if we reach for Clausen. The kid looks like a punk and I can think of no one I’d less like to see in a ’Skins uniform.

Be very afraid

Beware:

Vinny lurks. He probably still has Snyder’s ear, and he’ll be pushing hard for Claussen. If they pick Claussen, then Snyder is still firmly in the decision chair.

ImFROMdc88,

Mel Kiper’s an ass. I don’t like that guy, and I probably never will. He’s not “pro” Redskin. And for him to say jump for Claussen, means he hasn’t watched not ONE Redskin game.

But his “need a QB” theory is all based off of his dislike of Jason Campbell. Anyone that knows football, knows that this team has “needs”, and as much as a new QB would sell jerseys, it won’t equate wins in the NFC East. THAT ALONE says that we need to go lineman.

This isn’t the NFC West, and even THEY have some stout O-lines.

Lombardi's 2009 mock draft

was a complete flop. Hopefully he will not do any better in 2010 in the #4 pick (presuming the Skins keep it) since he has Claussen there also.

by Jefferson1935 on Mar 17, 2010 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

You can hate on Mel Kiper all you want...

But he’s pretty good at hyping up players. He’s big on drafting QBs high, no matter how good they are in the grand scheme. Neither Matt Stafford nor Mark Sanchez should have gone as high as they did last year, but Kiper always insists upon the top two QBs going in his top 5 every year. Pretty much, since his is the most well-known mock draft, it influences the opinions of coaching staffs and scouts. Even if he influences them just a little bit, that bit can be enough to help them choose between the glamorous pick they aren’t quite sold on and the solid pick that is a more definite (in our case) or trade up at any cost to get the perceived can’t-miss pick (in the Jets’ case).

Kiper is...

dumber than a bag of hammers. Seattle or Cleveland are a better fit for Clausen he can go ride their bench. We might be able to use this for leverage and force those teams into thinking the Skins might draft a QB and maybe get a few picks from them. Taking Okung is the surest thing for us if he is still around at #4.

I thought I was the only one who hates Kiper

For the most part he doesn’t know athing aout football….but back on subject. There is a chance that Claussen could be the best qb in this draft. Here me out…

-Clausen completion percentage is 68.0 (higher than Bradford)
-Manning in his junior year was 63.9, Rivers was 62.7, and Roethlisberger 64.4
-Clausen yards per attempt was 8.8, Mannings was 8.7, Rivers was 8.0, and Roethlisberger 7.6
-Clausen touchdown to interception ration was a whopping 7:1, Mannings was 1.7 to , Rivers and Roethlisberger was both a 2:1
-Claussen also spent 3 years in an NFL west coast offense, making him the most pro ready qb to come out in the past 15 years.
- His only knock…is his height (6’2) but Aaron Rodgers, Tony Romo, and Kurt Warner are all 6’2. Brees is 6’0.

Not to mention he calls audibles and changes blocking assignments at the line and been doin it for 3 years under Notre Dame pro style offense. He’s led comeback victories, particularly the one when he broke his toe and then came back in the second half. He’s played his best games in the bowl games also. The best part about it is they had a terrible defense and his o-line was in shambles. One could argue that Claussen is the best qb to come out in a long time although my personal opinion may differ.

Agreed.

And yes, I hate Mel Kiper. He doesn’t know anything.

But Clausen is very good. Saying “He looks like a punk” as your reason for hating him means you’ve bought in to the negative media pushed on him on the internet.

I'm assuming you have a long and detailed personal relationship

with him to have such strong feelings.

Please share some with the board…

Oh, wait a tic, you are just one of about 2 million ND haters. A just and perfectly non-biased view on Claussen.

I’m sorry, but the only people who have any sort of valid argument against drafting Claussen are the Campbell supporters who don’t think we should take any QB.

by Mr. E on Mar 17, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you spot my raised hand in the audience?

I have multiple reasons for disliking him, 2 of which you have mentioned. Don’t neglect the Michigan-Notre Dame rivalry in my blood for another, and then, since I’m a big non-fan of Charlie Weiss, you can add that relationship to the pool.

He’s apparently a dick, too – per Kevin’s post. I did enjoy each and every one of the approximate 50 times Michigan sacked him during his career, though. Kudos for that.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Mar 18, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Clausen may not be the greatest QB ever, or better than Bradford, but he seems to be very good indeed, and doesn’t deserve the “punk” label. And he shouldn’t be downgraded just because Kiper likes him – that’s irrelevant. Shanahan will not listen to Kiper. Rate him on the merits, as Mr.snyderhireme did above. If Bradford was gone and Okung is available, Shanahan will have a tough decision. I’d take Bradford at #4 if he was available. The thing is, if a “franchise” QB is available, we should get him. If no QB qualifies, go with Okung.

by Donnio1234 on Mar 17, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

well done..

I hate Kipers hairdo

its like he has taken the exagerated TV person hair from Southpark and Anchorman and deliberatlely exagerated it even more, I just dont like the look of the guy

I’d be interested to see the definitive stufy on his strike rate over the last 5 years, I’m tipping he does OK in the top 10 (like 6 or 7 players in his top ten go in the top ten, maybe 4 or 5 to the actual teams he said would take them) but then again pretty much everyone gets about that level fo correctness, even some of you guys I bet.

F*** Kiper, dont trust any make who cares that much about his hair

I somewhat agree with you

Not to the extent you are giving, but I think people are being too harsh on Clausen. He had really one weapon on offense and a horrible defense, plus his injury history is a lot cleaner than Bradfords. Although this is good and all, I just don’t want a QB in the first round.

by Nobetterthenbob on Mar 16, 2010 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's be fair

he had Golden Tate, Michael Floyd (’11 top 10 pick), Kyle Rudolph (top 2 round TE next year), Armando Allen (very good receiving back), and a very good OL this year. Floyd, Rudolph and Allen all missed time this season but Claussen had them last year as well. Jimmy was awesome this year but so was that entire offense.

by Mr. E on Mar 17, 2010 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sold on Golden Tate but

I think all this other options on offense were slightly above average at best. What I’ve seen on film is more Clausen making great throws then the receivers making plays. Plus you can’t really say who will end up where in next years draft unless they are the top prospect at their position and I don’t think Floyd is a top 10 WR at this time. They have another season to play and a change in HC and QB, that is when you’ll see how good they really are.

by Nobetterthenbob on Mar 18, 2010 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a very good o-line.

And Michael Floyd was injured for part of the year.

BBV Mock Draft

Just to let you know that for each pick in the BBV draft we have an open poll to see if it was the right pick.

I picked Okung for you even though Clausen/Bradford were still available

After 24 votes only 17 think it is the right pick with the rest (I beleive) thinking Clausen should be the pick!

Not saying I want you to support my pick but feel free to vote!

If he was available how about Kindle in the second?

by G Fan in England on Mar 17, 2010 8:01 AM EDT reply actions

We don't need a QB this year.

Period.

by Scott E on Mar 17, 2010 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions

The thinking

is that Shan wants to pick his starting QB rather than inheriting one!

I do agree that a decent OL with a running game will see a big impact on Campbell’s performance.

by G Fan in England on Mar 17, 2010 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention

the potential damage to a new, less fragile QB if we don’t fix first things first – i.e. the OLine.

Shanny has to see that he has an inexpensive, workable commodity in Jason vs an expensive, not highly rated (by experts – not media heads) college kid who has leadership/personality glitches. At best an underpowered Jeff George.

another OT if he falls?

Kindle if he falls?

A safety?

Or a LB as you move to a 3-4 formation?

What Bob said..

If 1st rounder drops to us in the second – or IMO a highly touted solid second rounder, stick with OLineman for second pick. Else, LB then OLine, then FS.

Need a QB?

Don’t all teams need a QB? (Just kidding). As you know, many disagree with you, unless you use the strict definition of “need”. Obviously we can just keep JC, but some want better.

by Donnio1234 on Mar 17, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

First and foremost

I want a better Jason for this year with an improved OLine and receiver play. If Jason doesn’t improve, all bets are off and we begin to draft QBs when there will be a rookie cap and the risk is not so great.

I’m just going to close my eyes and pray that he defies my expectations.

by Reedskin on Mar 17, 2010 1:49 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

We can’t pass on Okung for Clausen. We should use all our picks on the O line, running backs are dime a dozen this year. Linebacker is also a concern, we may want to consider trimming more fat (players that do not fit into our plans) possibly trading them for positions we actually need.

Passing up any of the top 25 picks for Clausen

would be a monumental disaster and set us back another 4 years.

Clausen

Only take Bradford with #4 , Clausen would be a mistake. Redskins track record with QB
at one is terrible. I still don’t know if I like a OL at #4 we can pickup more OL in FA and quality
will be available in 2nd, trade JC for pick in 2nd if we get Bradford. Also we may have SUH or Mccoy availible at #4 take either over Clausen we shouldn’t be on the clock for more than 30 secs if that happens.. WOW Grossman signing out of left field, Joey porter coming,LJ signed, lets sign TO also, im dazed…

by dcbornskin on Mar 17, 2010 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

I have a feeling Grossman was signed to replace Colt Brennan and as far as Joey porter I think he is going to replace Andre Carter..

by ImFROMdc88 on Mar 17, 2010 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Porter for Carter is insane and a huge drop off

even if Carter is not as good in pass defense. Porter does not play the run well, which is disastrous for a 3 down LB.

Clausen acceptance

Interesting point, and could be a factor. But I suspect that if Clausen proved to be very good, cool and a “mensch”, and, most importantly, won games, everybody would love him. He’d have to earn respect, but you can say that about anybody. In some ways, I’m not sure JC has won respect yet (just my sense based on various quotes) – everybody likes him, but don’t have a lot of confidence in him as a QB. This is not to say we should take Clausen at #4 – that’s would be a tough decision (between Clausen and Okung). Hopefully Bradford would still be around.
