A question for the Portis people......

So I was listening to some sports talk radio this afternoon.....and they brought up some things about Larry Johnson in KC.  The thing that peaked my interest was the fact that Chiefs fans started a petition for the Chiefs to drop him so he did not break Priest Holmes all-time Chiefs record.  Now.....I am not comparing any of CP's shenanigans with what Larry Johnson has been arrested/charged/accused of, but is CP the name we want at the top of our all-time rushing list?  John Riggins is at 7472.......Portis is at 6597........876 yards and he is our all-time leader (per Pro-Football-Reference.com ).  I am not suggesting a position on this necessarily....but want to hear some other opinions.  If I had to go one way or the other.....I guess I don't really mind.  In our situation....Riggins does embody what it is to be a Redskin and he is a fan favorite....but he didn't live the "cleanest" of lives.  In the Chiefs situation....Holmes was never anything but a true pro....on and off the field.  Because of that....I don't know that the same resentment would apply to CP here!  I just know if he gets it.....it would still be hard to not think of Riggins as the better of the 2.  Maybe I am alone on that.....so what do you say?

Doesn't really matter to me

It’s just a record and the old guys are naturally gonna get passed when they played less games per season.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 16, 2010 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

That's understandable....

my question isn’t really whether it gets broke….it will inevitably…..but is CP the guy we want to do it. I know your position….just adding to the thread so people see what I am getting at!

by shvd98z24 on Mar 16, 2010 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

you make a good point

It just doesn’t bother me I guess.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 16, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

shvd, Riggins better then Portis ? LOL this is laughable. A healthy Riggins versus a healthy Portis this is not even a debate.

Riggins played in a great era for the redskins while CP can not say the same . I am not a fan of CP but he is when healthy, better then Riggins ever was.

by LETJASONPASS on Mar 16, 2010 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

He was a better Redskin

Portis is clearly the better back…..I will make no bones about it. He is a complete back and that is rare. As far as being a Skins fan….Riggins gets the nod from me as the better Redskin! It is not a fair comparison however…..bc Riggins was actually here before my time. In that way……I could prolly back-off my statement…..but in my heart….>Riggins was the better Skin. I feel like I will be talking about Riggins more in 20 years than Portis!

by shvd98z24 on Mar 16, 2010 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

No, Riggins

He is not a better back, but Riggins is the better winner with helping his team win a Superbowl.
It was the greatest of times with Riggins and the Redskins.
Portis is a special running back, but not a special leader to lead his team

Two things

One, it’s like excellent QBs, but one has a ring or two. Riggo was money. CP all stats and flash (good blocker and good hands, granted). If you need 3 yds for a TD, Riggo all day every day.

Two, Riggo was the better team mate/Redskin. Did not make Honorable Hog for no reason. It’s presumable that Riggo has no affinity for man sausage. CP….less than a certainty?

who cares...really?

isn’t it slightly more important to fix the running game than some stupid record that doesn’t really mean anything. That being said, Portis never got us to the Super Bowl but Riggins had a better team around him.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

I'm alright with it

when compared to LJ, I compare CPs mouth running to immature shenanigans.

CP is CP and Riggo is Riggo

You can’t really compare them in any way except by their stats – and then they played at a different time. Makes great salon reading, but otherwise means nothing in the scheme of things. I’m waiting to see the next great Redskin back.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT???

What the hell did we need with a good running back??? We had the Fun ’n Gun!!

It's even sadder when you get to the bottom....

and realize we were relying on Ramsey! Nice link Rekka…..I needed a smile!

Records were made to be broken.

If Portis is dedicated enough to stay on the team, I hope he breaks it.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 16, 2010 5:34 PM EDT reply actions

Let him break it.

At the end of the day, the measurements of a player can be skewd. Record for yards, record for TD’s, record for carries…

It’s all a matter of opinion of who’s deserving. Emmitt Smith has the All-Time Rushing Record, but if you ask me, Barry Sanders is the greatest back to ever lace em up. And as easy as it is for me to say Barry, someone can argue that Payton was.

So at the end of the day, if he does break the record yet he continues to be a “cancer”, then we’ll just have to root harder for the next back to break the new record.

by J.Cash on Mar 16, 2010 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

I am all for Doak Walker

He was my grandfather’s favorite player of all-time……..I did some research on him and even though stats don’t tell the story completely…..what a tremendous threat he was on the field. I have 6 of his 1948 Leaf RC cards!

by shvd98z24 on Mar 16, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Factor in the modern era....

I think you have to go Payton…….but I have a huge soft spot for Earl Campbell.

by shvd98z24 on Mar 16, 2010 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah all those are great

Watching those old NFL films things on Jim Brown gives me goosebumps.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 16, 2010 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

See? All a matter of opinion.

And if Portis crushed your favorite back’s record, that wouldn’t mean anything.

by J.Cash on Mar 16, 2010 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

all things being equal

I’d take Bo Jackson over anyone else. I loved Payton, Dickerson, Sanders, etc. But, in my opinion, if Bo didn’t know baseball, he would’ve gone down as the greatest back ever. THat dude was ridiculous. And who DIDN’T use the Raiders on Tecmo bowl and just run Bo all day? I think the 2 sport-life burned his body out.

by CJHutch on Mar 18, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

My understanding is that his hip injury was a basic running injury

He probably would not have saved much use of it as he was a workaholic in the off-season.

by Scott E on Mar 18, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably

but don’t you think playing 2 professional sports does a little extra wear and tear on the body? Regardless of the hip injury, he still beat himself up pretty bad.

Curling.....maybe

Baseball….not so much. :)

by Scott E on Mar 19, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Reply fail

I will admit that him playing Baseball probably did not help him out any. And there was always a risk of collision with a wall/fence or another player. But I’m pretty sure I recall Bo keeping in max shape no matter what he was doing sportswise.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Mar 19, 2010 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

he definitely

kept in top shape. But that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m just saying that playing sports, professionally, takes something away from the body. That’s why they have offseason’s. I’m not saying that’s why he got hurt, I’m just saying that, had he concentrated on one sport, he would’ve been a lot better at it than he was.

by CJHutch on Mar 19, 2010 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

not to quibble with you their shvd

but the phrase is not “peaked your interest” it is “piqued your interest” bloody Americans!!! :)

As fro your main point, I get where you are coming from, nut no one will be complaining if Portis gets a 1000 yards this year, I certainly wont thats for sure, cos it means he has come back committed and ready to play, and remember, 1st half of Zorn Season One he was amazing, if he gets back to that level, the last 18 months will be forgotten I would imagine.

And dont forget, for all his many many faults, the dude when on the field was always happy to do the dirty work, initiate contact, place downfield blocks, chip on the way through all that stuff, so I think we should be rooting for him to succeed, I dont have much faith, but it will be good for the team if he does well so I hope he does do well

Not to quibble....

but the radio show “piqued my interest” while the fact that KC had a petition to not let LJ break the record…peaked my interest!!!!!! :) haha

everyone should earn their starting spot

and no position should be just handed to a player. That applies to every position and in every year. There’s no other way to win in such a competitive league. If LJ or a rookie RB out performs CP then they should get the carries and not CP. personally I definitely prefer Riggins to CP but winning trumps any concerns about who holds the record.

by aFan4Life on Mar 17, 2010 9:39 AM EDT reply actions

I personally dont think they are even really comparable...

Now a days more games are play per season. Our healing technology is far better so there is more play vs. rest. I dont care who holds the records. I dont think anyone but Riggins really cares if his records are broken. Portis has put many yards on the books for us. I hope and prey that he will get us more.

Records are made to be broken

And, what, John Riggins is the height of non-controversy?

by kseandoyle on Mar 18, 2010 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

I don't care about the record

but I’d take Riggo in his prime over CP in his prime any day. Just my preference, but I prefer the Diesel’s running style. And for those talking about Portis’ ability to catch it out of the backfield, Riggo could catch it too. Sure, Portis in his heyday may have given you more breakaway’s, but when you NEED the yards, you’d give it to Riggo every time.
Anyway, it’s hard to compare guys from different eras who have completely different running styles. I just go with favorites, and seeing the Diesel trucking people has always given me fond memories.

by CJHutch on Mar 18, 2010 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

As a young guy (23)

I didn’t get to experience Riggins in his glory. CP was our generation’s Riggins per say. It’s just a changing of times, and I’m not sure they should be pitted against each other.

The Chiefs fans wanted LJ out because he was a serious detriment to their perceived image of themselves and they also believed he was just about to limp into the record books. CP has brought a lot of positives to Washington and shouldn’t be labeled in the same way LJ was in KC
