Carriker in, Carter out?

I hear the skins are trying to trade for Adam Carriker of the St. Louis Rams. Andre Carter is reportedly being used as trade bait. At first glance, a resounding "H-NO!" would be in order. I always liked Carter and now he's got some help up front. But if the skins switch to the 3-4, Carter is nowhere near as effective as a stand-up rusher, as opposed to having his hand in the ground. But if we trade him, does that mean Chris Wilson would be the OLB starter?Hmm...the 3-4 is becoming more and more a reality.

This makes me wonder...

We’re in discussions with the team that has the #1 overall pick. The same team that has been eyeing Bradford for the past few weeks, when initially all indications pointed towards us having no competition to draft a QB. Are we trying to work out a deal to ensure we snag Bradford? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 6:25 PM EST reply actions

I doubt that's the case

In reality, it’s looking like we are going to the 3-4. Trading Carter would be a good idea since he doesn’t fit the scheme very well and would be in his best wishes since he doesn’t want to play the OLB position. On top of that, we’d receive a play that would fit right in.

by Nobetterthenbob on Mar 11, 2010 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

If we are thinking this way

Then making it really good, the Redskins work out a trade for a player for a player or two. Leaving a huge hole for the team with the #1 pick on the DL. Which without tipping what the Redskins are going to do, does make it more obvious what the Rams will do and it’s not picking a QB

by dr WNC on Mar 11, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

Trading Carriker doesn't really leave a huge hole in their D-line.

Unless they have concerns about his shoulder I think Bradford is going to them. It does make sense that we are trying to dump Carter.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

Campbell and Carter plus our 4th rd pick to the Rams

for Carriker their 2nd and a swap of first rd picks.

by Tiller56 on Mar 11, 2010 8:07 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Now we're talking

This was my whole point. Are we gonna try to move JC and swap picks so we can ensure we get Bradford #1 overall? I’m sure there will be some major tinkering with these scenarios, but I feel like we’re setting the foundation to move Campbell. The Browns are looking for a starter too, and they have the 7th pick. Why haven’t we heard anything about giving up Campbell for their #7 and another piece?

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

The Browns are poised to try and grab Claussen in my opinion.

And the Seahawks with possibly the Broncos looking to work a deal for Claussen.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 11, 2010 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

would another ND QB go over well?

Brodney Pool just left Cleveland, so they have holes at CB and safety…Joe Haden or Eric Berry have to be on their wish list as well.

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

They are moving Brady, and they need a starter.

They may try to trade for an existing QB like Smith, Kolb or take a 2nd round QB, McCoy. The Browns are loaded with draft picks,11, and are in desperate need of a young, new starter. They may also make a play for Bradford, but Claussen fits their style better.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 11, 2010 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

Yea Quinn is done

Seneca Wallace stands to be their starter at the moment. Holmgren would like an upgrade this season if possible, and Campbell fits the bill. That’s not to say Holmgren won’t start the season with Wallace IF he doesn’t get a good offer. Wallace knows Holmgren’s system, and the coach did the same exact thing with Hasselbeck when he left GB. Now’s the time to get a feel for what they want specifically, and gauge whether the asking price is fair. Between CLE & STL, we have two viable candidates potentially in need of JC’s services, so if we really wanted to we could make a move on draft day IMO. It’s just a matter of making the pieces fit the puzzle.

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

It’s not Holmgren’s system their playing in…

He’s not their head coach, he’s their GM, he brings in the personnel. Mangini is the head coach and he is the one implementing his system.

by travisjh86 on Mar 12, 2010 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

Possible, not sure if Holmgren cares about that.

They may make a play for Bradford as well. The thought that Seattle and Holmgren battling it out for a QB is intriguing.

Delhomme will make 20 Million this year guaranteed

13 mil from the Panters and Seven MIl from Cleveland

Crazy huh, Campbell will make 3.2 million

gotta make you wonder if Campbell really is that good, how come they were happy to pay this guy 7mil, and not even offer a draft pick and less money to get Campbell

For the record I like Campbell, but all these ppl on this site (LJP) who talk as if he is a top 5 QB, should as Deep Throat said….“Follow the money, always follow the money” that tells you how much the players are rated.

Carolinas paying a guy $13 million to go away, and wont offer pick 16 or whatever it is that they have for Campbell, it shows that Campbell is a mid level QB, not a top level one, thats why I will not be dissapointed if we go Colt McCoy in the 2nd Round, (but I’ll be annoyed if they go Clausen, or trade up for Bradford) because I am going to trust the people who truly know what they are talking about, like a Superbowl winning coach, over a blowhard like LJP anytime

The Browns might be looking at Tebow now.

Or some other mid-grade QB prospect. Someone they can work with for 2 years. Delhomme probably takes them out of the Bradford/Claussen discussion.
Seattle is also probably out of that mix with their new QB.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 18, 2010 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think that would get a deal done.

Campbell, Carter, and Rogers or McIntosh would work to get Bradford and Carriker.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 11, 2010 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, but if you identify a QB to lead your team for the next 10+ years....

then you should do whatever is necessary, within reason, to obtain him.
If I was in charge, and I felt a QB change was needed, I would grab the guy that I want to lead the team going forward. And if I was happy with my current QB, I would lock him up for the next 5 years.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 12, 2010 12:06 AM EST up reply actions

Are you talking still switching firsts?

Or would we be getting their first in return for all these players.

by Tiller56 on Mar 12, 2010 6:58 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, definately swap 1st rd picks. Sorry.

St. Louis is in a good position as 5 teams could be in the trade mix.

by Nobetterthenbob on Mar 14, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

A player for a player or two

is a very reasonable guesstimate, considering that ShanAllanhan are trying to buff up our options. Also, I don’t think we are ‘working out a deal to ensure we snag Bradford’, either, Kell. The logic behind this assumption is that snagging Bradford leaves us with JC, Colt (untested), and a rookie QB. No team is going into the NFL season without an experienced back up at QB.
If we were, say, to snag Bradford, then Colt is gone, to be replaced by a veteran back up. That scenario doesn’t make a whold lot of sense either when you look at it. Give up one untested youth, for another untested youth, AND have to pay him top five-pick deneros……

rams fan here

I just saw a post about this on our site. What do you guys think of Carter over here? Carriker doesn’t really affect our D-Line at all since he has been out the past year and had some injury’s in the past. We need help even if he is healthy this year and stays on our team. I actually would like some type of trade with these players, I’m assuming Carter is a decent player? Good luck to the skins next year as well.

by ramsrule on Mar 11, 2010 7:23 PM EST reply actions

I would say Carter is a solid DE who has developed the ability to be very solid against the run.

As for his pass rushing he will feast on single coverage or favorable matchups but isn’t good enough to be double teams. When he is our only pass rushing threat and teams can double him he will give you like 4 sacks a year. This year he had Haynesworth for most of the year and in passing situations we would move him over the RT and he had 11 sacks. Seems to be considered a good locker room guy. I like him and think he has 2 good years left as a 4-3 DE. He won’t create a pass rush by himself but if you can put someone with some decent rush skills on the other side he will destroy 1 on 1 matchups.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

Sort of true

Haynesworth was off the field for a lot of 3rd down passing situations, so Carter deserves more credit than you’re giving him. But he has always been the weakest link in our front 4 run D. Carter also had double digit sacks with us before Fat Albert joined us.

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

Carter had double digit sacks for us once; when Daniels was playing real well opposite him

Then Daniels got hurt the next year, he faced double teams and got 4 sacks. He can beat favorable matchups but won’t get you double digit sacks if the other team can double him. Carter actually had a great year against the run last year. When Haynesworth came out Orakpo moved down and Carter moved over to the easier matchup against the RT.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

All true

But the year Daniels went down, so did Griffin right? Carter was by himself out there with scrub teammates so of course his numbers were gonna be weaker. We had the worst D line in all of football at the time. Again, you’re selling the guy short.

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

How am I selling the guy short I said he can barely put up double digit sacks when he has help but won't if he's the only legit pass rusher.

He would be an upgrade over what they had last year but obviously can’t take on double teams and still get double digit sacks like a Jared Allen or Demarcus Ware. Thats not a slight. Also once again your facts are wrong Griff played 15 games that year.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

It sounded like

you were implying that the guy is only able to make plays because of either Fat Albert or Phillip Daniels. I don’t wanna get into an argument here, we’re all on the same side.

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

He would look great opposite Chris Long. Leonard Little is getting a little old for you all and Carter is a little old himself (30 I believe) but younger than Little. Carter is also a freak of nature with under 10 percent body fat. He’s old but probably the most physically fit person on the skins team. He still has a lot in the tank and could provide some great depth at DE if he was actually traded to you all.

by travisjh86 on Mar 12, 2010 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

maybe physically gifted, yes. But Carter could be on the cover of one of those fitness magazines.

by travisjh86 on Mar 12, 2010 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

True

I didn’t realize Orakpo had a body fat percentage of 6, i just knew he was a monster. Carter has a body fat percentage of 4 though and I’m pretty sure he is a model haha.

But how much sense does it make

for the Rams? There’s gotta be something I’m not seeing. Why would they want a 31 year old DE when the just used their 1st rd pick on one last year? How would we make this work? We’d have to give up more than just Carter obviously. Carter & Campbell & #4 for Carriker & #1 & 3rd rd pick perhaps?

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 7:29 PM EST reply actions

Are you serious?

They drafted Chris Long 2 years ago and he is basically a DT. Carriker is often hurt and isn’t very dynamic. I would think they would be getting the better player in a straight swap. They have no pass rusher and plenty of DT help.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

But who trades a guy for someone 10 years his elder

straight up? There’s this thing called “upside.”

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

Three years in Carriker has been hurt and nothing special

They don’t care about him. They just lost their 2 best pass rushing DE’s and can get 2 good years out of Carter. You totally overestimate Carriker, probably cuz he was drafted high 3 years ago and you haven’t seen or followed him since.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

OK Mel Kiper

you’re right I probably am over-valuing him. Then that begs the question, why are we looking at him at all? Answer me that, since you’ve watched Carriker so religiously.

I’m just saying, they are undoubtedly using his draft position as a bargaining tool, that’s why I threw out that possible trade scenario involving picks, Campell, etc.

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Why are you calling me Mel Kiper when your the one who's sole knowledge of the player was where he was drafted?

a)we don’t know this is actually being discussed
b)If it is being discussed it is a matter of 2 teams looking to swap players they don’t particularly care about
c)How do you know they are using his draft position? Any NFL FO-type would actually consider what the dude does on the field not where he was drafted 3 years ago.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

Because this comment pissed me off

“You totally overestimate Carriker, probably cuz he was drafted high 3 years ago and you haven’t seen or followed him since.”

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

I think it was polite considering you clearly didn't know what you were talking about

Not to mention you were blatantly wrong about 3 simple facts. You would be wise to see what Rams fans think of Carriker. You still called me Mel Kiper when you were the one who showed you had no knowledge of him outside of draft position like Mel Kiper would.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

3?

I was asking if Griffin played or not, but carried on as if I assumed he was out that season. That’s 1.

I said “last yr” when I should have said “the yr before last.” That’s 2 (splitting hairs but I’ll give you that for argument’s sake)

And I’m sticking with my “Haynesworth being off the field” comment because we all know how much time he spent huffing oxygen every game he played in.

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

Ur killin me smalls

You’re assuming I know nothing about the situation, which immediately puts me on the defensive.

I also never boosted Carriker in any comment, so I don’t know where you got that from. Was it from my possible trade scenario? If he’s two years removed from being a top 15 pick, then undoubtedly the Rams are going to try to use that as leverage.

by KellRawLive on Mar 11, 2010 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

You said we'd have to be giving more than Carter implying Carriker was worth something.

Yeah the Rams might mention that he was a top 15 pick but any football guy would just say “What has he done in the in the NFL” and then do a speed racer laugh till the Rams lowered their head in shame. Then when the Niners found out they would be calling the Rams telling them all about the #1 overall picks they have at QB to trade.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

You also said Carter was 10 years older when he is 5 years older and was wrong about his age

So either you don’t know the shit or you were purposely stretching facts to fit a tired ass argument. I thought I was pretty polite about it.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

really? does it matter? one will be out of the league in 2-3 years

you get the point I was trying to make..this is just nitpicking on your part. Sorry I didn’t have 15 tabs open and double check every nuance possible before typing. Bottom line is, the Rams will say, “the guy we are giving up has a lot more left in the tank, and a lot more time left in this league.” It’s a bargaining chip they will undoubtedly use. That was whole point. And as far as, “what has he done in the NFL,” well, if you’re injured for a good portion of that, then your numbers will be down. We just signed a guy who had two operations on his achilles, and that didn’t scare us off because we know his potential when 100%. Not saying Carriker is on Kemoeatu’s level, just saying the philosophy is the same. Let’s leave it at that. You’re arguing with me because I disagreed with you. I just joined the blog, and I should have known there would be at least one Lord of the Flies character in here. There always is, thanks for welcoming me into the crew. I don’t know shit about shit-I was just the guy that gave you the link when you asked for it after all, because you weren’t up on your game.

We could be looking at a true big man Dline

I have a feeling we are looking for a huge 3-4 D-Line. 3-4 ends are normally big, but I think we are going real big. I don’t know what to say, because I don’t know who we are gonna get next, but I just know we are going for one hell of a 3-4 D.

by BigOLinemen on Mar 11, 2010 8:01 PM EST reply actions

Reasoning with this trade ?

Unless the Rams think a QB with the first pick is too risky and will draft Suh and like Carter in the lineup with him. That leaves me to think maybe Campbell is in the trade too and the Skins may get some pick for him. I think the Skins would have to be really interested in Bradford but I can`t seem to think that he would be better than Okung with the 4TH pick. Knowing Bradford will be gone when the Seahawks pick the Skins still need to address left tackle. Good question but somewhere the Skins need a running back also.

by mybluebone on Mar 11, 2010 8:04 PM EST reply actions

LT in the 2nd; Saffold, Veldhere, Ducasse, possibly Davis now.

RB in the 4th; Tate, Starks, Dixon, McNight.
In my opinion, the Skins have decided to draft a QB, and they will get the one that they target. I think it will be Bradford, and a trade with a willing St. Louis will happen at some point.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 11, 2010 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

In all seriousness

I don’t want any of those guys (except maybe davis) to be the starting LT going into the season.

by Nobetterthenbob on Mar 11, 2010 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

I understand your apprehension, but all three have tremendous upside.

And they all figure to be starters in the league for a long time.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 11, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

That's fine and all

I just don’t think those picks are going to contribute on the left side as well as what we could get in the first round. It would be much better if we could plug them in on the right side while drafting okung or another 1st rounder

by Nobetterthenbob on Mar 11, 2010 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

Yea, Veldheer and Ducasse probably need a year to be a quality starting LT.

Saffold should be able to start LT this year, but will need to develope.
To be honest, once you get past Okung; who will probably be gone, the other tackles have question marks. Bulaga did not have a good year, has a major health issue, and questions about his overall effectiveness, Williams may only be a RT, and Campbell is a major Project. The difference between these guys and the 2nd round guys are not that great. Other than Campbell, who is high risk/reward, the 2nd round guys have as high if not a higher ceiling.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 11, 2010 11:19 PM EST up reply actions

What do we think about Andre Davis from denver??

Obviously shannahan knows him pretty well and he can definitely give us some quality depth at linebacker……….

by JONAH 31 on Mar 11, 2010 8:12 PM EST reply actions

I think Davis would be a good pick-up to play next to Fletcher.

He is older,31, but an effective 2 down run stopper. McIntosh would play 3rd and passing downs.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 11, 2010 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

I AGREE....

IM NOT ADVOCATING DAVIS STARTING OVER ROCKY BUT MORE SO AN INSURANCE PLAN AS FAR AS DEPTH IS CONCERNED CUS I DONT KNOW ABOUT YALL BUT I THINK BLADES IS EXTREMELY SUSPECT AND AT SOME POINT FLETCHER MAY ACTUALLY GET HURT AND HAVE TO MISS A FEW GAMES…..

by JONAH 31 on Mar 11, 2010 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

Davis probably does start over Rocky for his run stopping ability.

I am not sure about Rocky playing inside as a run-stopper, but McIntosh still plays in passing situations. The team needs depth at inside anyway, and Davis provides that. If they use a draft pick on an inside linebacker, he wouldn’t likely start or play much this year as it is. I figure Fletcher is gone next year, and Davis has 2-3 good years left in him.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 11, 2010 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

Things to remember

Carter has a no trade clause and I doubt he’d be eager to go to the Rams. If this rumor is true it would merely be teams trying to swap players that don’t fit their D-scheme. Most Rams fans seem to feel Carriker is a 3-4 DE and for us Carter is a 4-3DE.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 11:04 PM EST reply actions

He does, but he also does not want to play in a 3-4.

I believe he would ok a deal as he wants his stats and bonuses. Being on a rebuilding Skin team is no fun either, so jumping to the Rams isn’t that much of a deal-breaker. From what I’ve heard Spagnuola is a player’s coach, the kind that Carter might prefer in his last years. Especially since Haslett/Shanahan have a ‘tough’ reputation.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 11, 2010 11:27 PM EST up reply actions
