Sounds like the typical package deal you get with a new Coaching staff

They always default to what they’ve seen personally. Having to play against LJ for years (but not last year) Shanny is a bit intrigued. Question: Who do we keep? LJ or CP? Can’t see both and both have negatives in the attitude dept. recently.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Mar 10, 2010 2:08 PM EST reply actions

CP is already on the books

Would be cool to have a CP2 or Mini CP or CP carbon copy, in case he gets hurt.

by RPMontana on Mar 10, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Larry Johnson isnt the back he used to be

he averaged 2.9 yards per carry last year. While Jamaal Charles averaged 5.9 behind the same line.

by JeanBaptiste on Mar 10, 2010 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

he is worn out and he has an attitude….send him to the Raiders!

by aFan4Life on Mar 11, 2010 7:52 AM EST up reply actions

Actually

this one makes the most sense to me. While I would prefer they bring in Wetbrook for a workout, Johnson would be 1A in my book. And the fact that Shanny knows him well from his AFC West days makes perfect sense here. Unlike Parker, Johnson didn’t play himself out of his job. He talked himself out of it. Here, he wouldn’t be the “face” of the franchise, but would make a nice reclamation project. While I would be surprised if we signed him, I WOULDN’T be surprised to see him starting week 1 if we did.

by CJHutch on Mar 10, 2010 2:10 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

He was god awful last year

and was in the process of playing himself out of his job before he decided to get all bigoted. There Run game blew up once they got rid of him. He was basically the third best back on the Chiefs.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 10, 2010 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

perhaps

but I recall him looking pretty good in Cincy, though admittedly in limited minutes.

by CJHutch on Mar 10, 2010 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

ehhh

He had 1 good game against the Browns but other than that did nothing for the bungles. He finished with a 3.3 YPC for the year. I’d rather have Fargas or pretty much anyone else..

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 10, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah Jamaal Charles lit it up after Larry Johnson left

by travisjh86 on Mar 10, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

As a Chiefs fan who follows them closely

LJ definitely played himself out of a job. He was getting 25-30 carries a game and averaging 2.7 YPC, which is godawful by any standard. The Twitter meltdown just gave the Chiefs an excuse to finally dump him without waiting until the end of the season.

by cvigz on Mar 11, 2010 9:36 AM EST up reply actions

Because we’re drafting a RB this year

by travisjh86 on Mar 10, 2010 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

If we are drafting a running back

why bring in any of these guys who have clearly lost a couple steps. I’m sure whatever rookie shanahan draft will be more productive than these Larry Johnson or Slow Willie Parker.

by JeanBaptiste on Mar 12, 2010 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

I'll be shocked if Shanny doesn't have at least 2 rookies in camp

UDFA’s or otherwise.

Alridge’s still coming to camp

by Rekka on Mar 10, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

that doesnt make a difference

Shanahan is going to want lots of young competition at the RB spot.

I said this in response

to Bay. He asked if there was anyone around that was young that had potential. Alridge fits both bills and he’s already on the roster.

Here ya go for starters...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Johnson_%28American_football%29#Legal_troubles

From this and his other non-legal issues, it seems like he’s the epitome of someone who has no respect for others. Now Shanahan doesn’t seem like the type to let anyone disrespect him or the team, so the only positive I can see is that when (not if) LJ invariably disrespects someone, his ass will be riding the pine.

Contract needs to be limited in any guaranteed money, or (if legal), include modifiers that bonus money is to be forfeited if player is disciplined by the team or league.

by KenPat on Mar 10, 2010 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry guys

I’m speaking from personal experience here. I’ve known JL for some time now. He comes from a very good family, and is truely a descent and quite person. Has he got in trouble for stupid things in the past; yes. Does that make him a bad person; no.

by Tiller56 on Mar 11, 2010 8:15 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe your the one who doesn't know him

You can say what you want but a man has to be judged by his actions and words. LJ’s words and actions paint him as the worst kind of human being. Maybe your cool with Homophobia. Maybe you see a long pattern of beating women cool. Just cuz you sweat his nuts and have spoken to him doesn’t make all the woman beating go away. If it was just a whisper campaign about him being a locker room cancer thats one thing but 4 arrests for beating women is a whole nother story. Look I know you think you know him but your just digging yourself a hole here.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

Im lost....

I just cant see wtf Shannahan would want with this dude……I mean damn…Vargas is in philly right now probably bout to sign a contract and we could have been snatched him up….instead we bring in Willie turf toe Parker and washed up ass L.J…..NONSENSE!!

by JONAH 31 on Mar 11, 2010 11:45 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry that was overly harsh and rude

My point being I don’t care if he’s your brother you can’t roll in after 4 arrests and the Twitter thing and be like “No you guys are wrong I KNOW him.” His actions and his own words got him this rep you can’t say it wasn’t well earned regardless of what family he came from. I’m not saying this to change your mind but you can’t come out and claim some knowledge of him and tell people they are wrong for thinking some dude with 4 arrests for beating women is a shit head that shouldn’t be on our team. Plus beating women is serious dude and I think you make light of it in a totally unnaceptable way. You term it “getting in trouble for stupid things” like he got busted for public urination or reckless driving. 4 arrests is a pattern. You can’t wave a hand over it and tell everyone it’s no thing. That’s horribly disrespectful in my opinion though I doubt you were thinking about it that way in your defense.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 11, 2010 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

Bay, So I guess Shanny is a scumb bag too for wanting him on our team.

Some poeple believe in second chances. Mike Vick even got one. I supposed the Stealers should dump Big Ben as well.

By the way, I’m not trying to play the “I know him card”. I’m just trying to give a different persepective of him for those who don’t know him and only hear what the media reports.

If another poster came on this site and posted about a player on the redskins, or someone we were looking at from a personal vantage point, instead of what we hear from the media, I for one would be glad to hear a different view of that person. I certainly wouldn’t be disrespectful towards that person for expressing their opinion on a more personal level.

I in no way advocate what he has done is his past, however this attack on me personally was un-warrented, immature, and uncalled for. Try acting a little more curteous of your fellow fans opinions and views.

by Tiller56 on Mar 12, 2010 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

You're still not really dealing with the point.

He might be the friendliest guy in the world. But being arrested multiple times for domestic violence, by definition, makes you a bad person.

Maybe 10 years from now we’ll be able to look back and say he’s changed. But that claim cannot be made now, and he cannot be called a ‘good person’.

"By far the worst performers on the team are in the front office." – Sally Jenkins

by smutsboy1 on Mar 12, 2010 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

You still continue to make light of it

Which is starting to say alot more about you than him. And to say you are offering a different perspective is a little disingenous. You tried to trump everyone’s opinion and act like beating women is really no big deal cuz you KNOW him and he didn’t choke you. If you don’t like me pointing out that you saying you know him has nothing to do with it and proves nothing then don’t throw that out there and tell everyone they are wrong. If you come from a good family you are not precluded from being a shit head just like being polite to some guy doesn’t preclude you from going out and beating women apparently. If you don’t like the heat you should be more careful with your statements.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 12, 2010 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

I have no problem with you Tiller and have been way too pointed admittedly

If you had said something like “I have had alot of experience with him and his family and he has been nothing but decent and polite with me” I would have never said anything and have felt that was credible. I took issue with what certainly seemed to read as a blatant assertion that he wasn’t a bad guy cuz he came from a good family and had been polite/kind to you. Also I felt you were rather cavalier in your explaining away 4 arrests for violence against women, something I find pretty scummy. I was too pointed however and will get off my high horse now and say no more.

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 12, 2010 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

People who beat women are not 'good people'. PERIOD.

He may be respectful and nice to you and people he meets in his daily life.

But his actions are his actions, and there’s no excusing what he did. His actions are the definition of a bad person.

Sorry man.

I’m speaking from personal experience here. I’ve known JL for some time now. He comes from a very good family, and is truely a descent and quite person. Has he got in trouble for stupid things in the past; yes. Does that make him a bad person; no.

BS on that

I know he’s from your alma mater and you “know him” but he beats women and is a bigot and much reported cancer. Johnson has been arrested four times since 2003 on various assault charges against women Maybe he is quiet but he certainly commits bad actions. Try and explain that away as the media.

SMDH

Say it aint so……what purpose could he possibly serve other than to spread testicular cancer throughout the locker room???

by JONAH 31 on Mar 10, 2010 3:56 PM EST reply actions

They want an insurance policy.

That’s the only explanation for the “my career is almost over, I need 1 more payday” set. They can sign an aging vet for peanuts, and then load his contract with incentive clauses for motivation. It makes sense if Portis is ineffective and rookies haven’t caught up yet.
A 1 year stop-gap signing for emergency purposes.
To me, it sends the urgent message to draft a back early.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 10, 2010 4:48 PM EST reply actions

There's less incentive now for teams to sign vets

With no salary cap, there’s no incentives built in to sign guys who have been in the league a long time. The base salary for vets is somewhere around 940,000. Under salary cap rules, the cap hit of that is much, much smaller, so signing a guy in his 30s is cap-efficient. Now, teams can just sign young guys with little to no experience for a low price. Especially for a team like the Redskins, who are trying to get out of a decade’s worth of overspending, it makes a lot more sense to pick up a rookie or 2nd year player whose minimum will be around 230,000 than to sign a vet whose minimum will be about 700,000 more than that. You’ve got less chance of a big ego, less chance of injuries breaking the guy down, and equal or less chance of him being successful. It’s a lower-risk investment, especially compared to a low-character guy like Larry Johnson.

by kseandoyle on Mar 10, 2010 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, they should sign a couple of young backs.

I am not advocating Johnson, heck no. But the idea of bringing in a ageing, experienced vet on an incentive laden contract will help smooth the transition until the younger guys are league ready. And if Portis is injured or ineffective or lacking in motivation, then the vet can fill in. Same with Hicks, same with Komoeatu, just 1-2 year stop-gap guys until draft picks ramp up.

Not sure there are decent young FA RBs

Yup.

That’s why I don’t really care one way or the other about these washed up vets they’re bringing in.

Shanny’s going to have at least 2 young/rookie RBs in camp, and I expect one of them to be a serviceable platoon guy.

might be my most hated player in the NFL

no way can I root for him. Total prick, ridiculous that anyone puts up with any RBs that cause problems.

by rva on Mar 10, 2010 5:29 PM EST reply actions

Yea, he isn't going to be filming any United Way commercials.

Not a proud franchise moment.
I know it’s not happening, but oh how I wish we could get Dexter McCluster(pitch). A high character guy we can all be proud of, who also happens to be a terrific football player( as are many others I’m sure).
Unfortunately that’s what it’s coming down to. Hoping that your favorite team’s players are not criminals and malcontents, but if they are, I guess we have to just look the other way.

He hit his wife and used twitter to bash homosexuals. This isn’t like Randy Moss. He didn’t just stop playing hard when his team was losing. This has nothing to do with football. From a pure football perspective, there’s nothing wrong with him if you sign him at a low price. But there is no price low enough to sign a guy like this.

This guy belongs in jail, not on our roster. I pray this is just a method of getting Willie Parker to sign.

you guys shouldn't even worry about your RB situation!

Mike Shannahan is your HC, if he’s proven one thing it’s that he’ll have you a productive half-back. Go offensive line with your first pick in my opinion.

My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

Do Not Want

Why would anybody want this jackass on their team? KC fans hated him so much they petitioned the team not to allow him to break Priest Holmes’ franchise rushing record. They were literally rooting against him. And it’s not like he’s even a good RB any more.

Hopefully this is more to put some heat on CP to hit the gym and Willie to sign.

Serious business.

+1

KC fan here. I wanted to see what HOG FANS had to see about LJ. I’m torn here. The guy was given many chances in KC. He changes his mind every other game and destoys team chemistry!

Maybe if given the chance, he will produce. He did run behind Priest, and might have something left in the tank. Pick him up for dirt, and if he runs his trap or slaps a chick run him out of town!

But we’re not the patriots. We gain nothing from having this dirtbag next year. I’d rather have 2 unproven undrafted maybes that used to sell cell phones and are begging for a shot, than this cat… or Fast Willie.
