Time to Rolle the dice on a new FS

It seems the recent rumors are about to come true.  The Cardinals are likely to release veteran safety Antrel Rolle, making the FS a hot commodity on the FA circuit.  This news should come as a shock to many Cardinal fans after first having to hear about the retirement of Kurt Warner, and then learning that their all-everything linebacker Carlos Dansby would not be franchised for a 3rd consecutive year, making him an unrestricted free-agent-to-be. Rolle, who was converted from corner to FS last season made the Pro Bowl for the NFC West Champion Cardinals.  His departure should leave a huge void in the Cardinals Secondary, but should fill another void for some deserving team.  He will however not come on the cheap.  He is likely going to want a 3-5 year deal comparing to the top 10 Safities in the league.

With all the talk of moving Landry back to his more natural position of SS, and not having a true FS on the roster, picking up Rolle as a free agent could be well worth the price tag for the 27 year old former Hurricane.

Sean Jones is a Free Safety who could be just what we need at a much lower price tag

Jones is a pure free saftey and wont come as heavily priced as Rolle. Jones would also come in with a chip on his shoulder which is something out a lot of our past free agents haven’t had. I would hate to see us overspend on a player when there is another player who could do just as good.

by JeanBaptiste on Feb 28, 2010 5:37 PM EST reply actions

He had very respectable numbers

I watched him a lot during the season. He still has the range to be successful, he tackles well, and he has good hands. qualities that could definitely help our secondary.

You don’t want Sean Jones, he flopped big time for us.

He did not do good against any of the other NFL East opponents including the Redskins. Look at the game by game breakout in the link above.

exactly

the mentality of “Yes, we should pay whatever we need to get a young talent like him at ____” has repeatedly been a disaster for the Redskins and it needs to follow VC out of the organization.

by aFan4Life on Mar 1, 2010 9:14 AM EST up reply actions

Most of the disasters were because

it wasn’t young talent, but severely past prime time talent, if you get the pun.

y is everyone so worried about money when there isnt going to be a cap this year its not like its your damn money if the damn guy is good and snyder is williing to spend all his damn money who the hell cares let the rich man do what he does best. i say if that will make a winning team let him and the rest of the team go to town spending every last dollar snyder has.

by notta_fan_of_sissies on Feb 28, 2010 6:18 PM EST reply actions

Because while 2010 will be uncapped

that isn’t going to last forever, and we don’t want to get caught in a bad salary situation when the cap returns in 2011 (I doubt there will be a lockout). Besides, do you really want to be the Yankees of the NFL? Thats pretty douche-y.

If the team only signs 1 big time FA, then let it be Dansby.

If Dansby is gone, then Rolle would be the man. Antrelle would solidify the secondary for the next 5 years.

I would rather in a FS through the draft

but Being as though we only have 5 picks and bigger issues….I can’t be totally against getting Rolle

by mr.snyderhireme on Feb 28, 2010 9:37 PM EST reply actions

That's the problem, only 5 picks.

Have to use 2 or 3 of them on O-line, need another Rb, Lb. The team might use a pick on a QB, and need secondary help. The more free agents we can get to fill holes, the better the team will be going forward.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 28, 2010 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

Antrel Rolle ≠ "Just another high-priced FA"

Safeties that can adequately handle coverage are excruciatingly hard to come by, and we definitely need one. Who wants to waste mid-round draft picks on guys we think might pan out when our O-line is routed like the maginot line day in & day out. I think rolle would be the inverse of Snyder’s mistakes in the past (hiring guys riding into the sunset who either aren’t hungry to perform for the Redskins or don’t have it in them anymore at that point in their career). Please sign Rolle and let’s draft O-line thru-&-thru

I don't mind signing FA's when they are young and talented.

I would perfer we stay away from guys whos’ best football is already behind them, and are simply looking for that 1 more big payday before they ride off into the sunset.

by Tiller56 on Mar 1, 2010 6:09 AM EST reply actions

I wouldn't mind Rolle

Frankly, I would’ve rather had him than Rogers to begin with. Turns out neither of them are top-10 worthy corners, but Rolle has at least found his niche at FS.

I think my biggest concern would be what number he wears. I know he was great friends with Sean Taylor, but I would really rather not see than number on anyone else.

Addicted to FA

http://www.hogshaven.com/2009/2/26/772915/ted-leonsis-shares-his-ten

Trying to cop the best free agents on the market every year shows a striking lack of awareness about what it takes to build a team that has a chance to succeed over time.

I like Rolle, I like Dansby. They are great players. But the Redskins need to rebuild the culture of the organization as much as they need to rebuild personnel. Draft young guys. Give them a shot to succeed. If they perform, reward them with big deals to demonstrate your loyalty to Redskins football. Add core veterans when you have a competitive young core that who have played for the Redskins and have true loyalty to the Redskins brand.

Stop writing checks to the hottest new guy on the market, stop coveting the stars of other teams, and only then will people stop treating the Redskins like a team to go to when you want a payday.

by KiranBhat on Mar 1, 2010 11:43 AM EST reply actions

Excellent point

on rebuilding the culture of the organization. Given the non-Cap year, though, we have the opportunity to pick up some key players – as long as we pay attention to the character issues and the exorbitant contract issues, we should be OK. It’s the draft where we really need to work it, though.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Mar 1, 2010 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Admittedly, football is a bit different from hockey in that there are more players who play a large role in the game. This necessitates, to some extent, a FA strategy where you “plug the gaps.” You are right that we have the opportunity to pick up key players.

But targets like Julius Peppers and Darren Sproles are, IMHO, just awful.

The trick to FA is to sign role players, guys who won’t be part of the core and who won’t breed resentment and create apathy in the younger, hungrier players we should be drafting and giving opportunities to. Draft the core, reward the young core (why the hell didn’t we sign Pierce and Clark all those seasons ago?), then bring in vet role players to put the team over the top. Basically every consistently successful franchise in the NFL does it this way. Agreed, drafting is what’s important this year and every year.

Rolle on Pass Coverage

stunk up the joint for the Cardinals. Look again – http://profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2009&page=2&surn=R&playerid=2225 Most of his negative was due to pass coverage. He was rated 67th amongst all safeties.
Look at the stats for Ed Reed, Kerry Rhodes, Nick Collins, Brodney Pool, etc. for what the better FS look like. This could be carried further with a little effort, but this is enough to make the point. Gansby on the other hand is worth the bucks.

Rolle has cover skills, but he's not a CB.

That’s why they moved him. Rolle recently started playing free safety, he steadily improved his game, and still made the Pro-Bowl. He should continue to improve as he hasn’t peaked. He has mad skills, and put in a steady defense he should excel for 5-6 years.
I agree Dansby first, but if they go Rolle also……..our defense will be HUGE.

by johnnydee83 on Mar 1, 2010 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

I would sign him for 3-4M a year

because he would fill a need that we can fill in FA. I wouldn’t sign him for 5-6M(what the top Safeties get paid and what he will probably get).

by BayAreaBullet on Mar 1, 2010 4:09 PM EST reply actions

the FA difference this year.

In the past our reckless free agent spending has crippled our team. This hasnt come so much to the under performing of the big names though I think, but what we gave up to get them. What has hurt the team the most is giving up draft picks (see Lloyd, Taylor, Duckett, etc.) and not having the cap space to resign our own guys (see Pierce, Clark, even Dockery). This year with the Restricted Free Agent designation being extended from 4 years to 6 of NFL service, and the lack of cap, we could take a chance on some of these big names to push our D over the top while retaining all of our young role players and draft picks. If we can add Dansby, Rolle, and/ or Peppers to fill the holes we need to make our 3-4 truly nasty, then all of our draft picks can be spent on OL and one for a young RB. Or we could add Sproles too and use 5 picks on offensive lineman!

by samthemantis on Mar 2, 2010 2:29 AM EST reply actions

just b/c they don't cost picks doesn't mean expensive FAs don't hurt us

when are we going to stop building a team around veterans who came to DC to get their last big contract?

Peppers is precisely the kind of player we need to stay away from.

so let me get this straight

we have a roster that contains Landry, Horton, Moore, Holmes and Doughty and we need to bring in another free agent, because we can’t find two starters amongst the five we have been carrying on the roster all year? Are we never going to develop our own players? is it always going to be a win now mentality?

The world looks mighty different when you're peeking out your belly button

by Skins Fan '77 on Mar 2, 2010 10:38 AM EST reply actions

Agreed

Let the young guys play! The Skins are not a good team right now, and I’m OK with them being not a good team for a few years if it means they will rebuild the culture of the organization in earnest and develop a young core.

This win now mentality may be an NFL-wide affliction, but I would take 5 down years followed by 5 excellent years over 10 straight mediocre years any time. I’m 21. The Skins have been terrible since I was 3, with the exceptions of 1999, 2005 and 2007 – when they had borderline playoff squads. I know it’s an unpopular sentiment, but let’s REALLY stink for a few years, sell off or drop the old vets and egos and right this sinking ship.

I believe there are probably a half dozen

players on this team that are bringing the locker room into a real negative state – a lot of which was brought on by the previous coaching staff.

I think the Shanny’s are going to turn a lot of player’s attitudes around and move the ship in the right direction. Everyone else will be jetsam.
