NFL Might Change their OT Rule as Soon as This Year
Under the new format, both teams would get the ball at least once unless the first team to get the ball scores a touchdown, Greg Aiello said. If the first team to get the ball makes a field goal and the other team ties the game, action would continue until a team scores again.

Better plan...
For years I thought there was nothing wrong with the NFL sudden death OT, as I always thought defense was part of the game and you should be able to stop the other team if you want to win. Then I compared it to baseball and thought that the NFL system would be like allowing a team that scored in the top of the 10th to automatically win the game, without the other team even coming up to bat.
The biggest problem in the NFL OT was one team would throw deep, get a borderline or bs PI call and then run it up the middle three times to set up an easy FG. I would like to see both teams get the ball regardless but at least this requires a TD to win it on one possession.
Your second paragraph scenario could be remedied by removing the spot foul for PI and making it a 10 or 15 yard penalty and auto 1st down (like it is in college).
Of course, the downside to that is that DBs will be playing a lot more aggressive knowing that the penalty isn’t at the spot of the foul.

you mean like the bogus PI call on Ben Leber in the NFC championship game
that set the Saints up for the field goal?

Hmm
So change the OT rule b/c the PI rule is both ill conceived and poorly handled by refs? Makes sense.
that's not the reason to change OT
The scenatrio I described seems to be the way alot of OT games end, and it just isn’t very exciting. The OT needs to be changed to stop teams from just playing for a FG.
or it could be remedied
by the refs realizing the magnitude of the call that they are making and making sure it is PI. I don’t want to see them go the college rule, for the reason you pointed out.
PI is a very frustrating penalty but the NFL penalty system is better because it does reward teams for taking shots down the field, something that Zorn never seemed to be able to figure out. I just wish the refs would call it correctly.
What is so bad about just playing a 15 minute overtime in the playoffs?
Would anyone seriously have turned off the set if the Vikings-Saints game went into OT just because you had to sit there and watch another 15 minutes?
I would suggest no overtime during the regular season. If you tie, you tie.
But playoffs are a 15 minute additional period.
