I definitely want to be here, especially after the coaching change — but it is in their hands......We never changed. I got beat several times. I'm sorry. That’s what happens when you play man & don’t change...I am a starter in the league, and a lot of teams wanted to try to trade for me, and they would not let me go....Laron is a good player. They just tell him to do too many different things. So he gets confused a lot." - Carlos Rogers

Man, for our sake I hope that's true.

What if a coaching change made Carlos and Laron elite?

What if…

What if

Both seemed to perform well before…was it the system, coaching or the players…
Most likely a combination of all three,
and coaches playing a system instead of coaches developing a system for the players.

by dr WNC on Feb 23, 2010 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

I agree it was all three

but to take it a step further it just seemed like their was no sense of direction or purpose last season.

It started years ago with obvious ignorance of ignoring offensive lineman in the draft and then was made worse with VC hiring Zorn who did OK at first but never adjusted to the players skill sets.

Yes, but let's take it a step further

There has been no real Redskins identity in the past 11 years, even Gibbs did not return to Redskins Football with a specific identity..

Yes

I got the same “non-feeling” about what Gibbs was all about, too. Sure, he provided some definite character and leadership, but you never got the sense that this was a team other than the rally around ST21.

Carlos had a good half of one season and Laron was never really a good FS.

Neither have shown a good period of play, IMO

I hope Carlos stays

with his experience now I gotta believe he’s ready to have a few very good years by his standards, which would be difficult to replace. He’s not the best but his cover skills are excellent at times.

Soo Long, Stonehands!!

but it is in their hands……

Just like all those potential INT’s were in yours.

I hate this guy more and more each day or each time i hear his name.

Rogers

I have always thought that Carlos was an excellent cornerback and should be retained. For one thing, he is bigger than Hall and a better tackler. But I think he could be traded if we got the right price – a first round pick or better. Use that and our current top picks for a QB and the O-line. Then beef up the defensive backfield with lower round picks (Hall is fine, but I would want someone better than Smoot, Barnes and Tryon at corner).

In Biazzro world he might be an “excellent cornerback”.
Getting beat on double moves repeatedly, forcing ZERO turnovers, and always on the wrong side of highlight reels.

The Redskins should have retained Shawn Springs and sent #22 packing

by Elaw6 on Feb 23, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Shawn Springs could never stay on the field

That makes every corner back in the league better than him.

Landry's not very smart, that's why he's confused

He’s just like Roy Williams. All he can do is make a big hit here or there and play the run, but can’t cover his own shadow!

Good Trade Bait!!

Laron and Carlos for 2nd and 4th rounder sound tempting

Jesus that would be depressing

two top 10 picks, up in smoke

I'd be pissed

if all we got for Los and Landry was a 2nd and a 4th. That’d be a steal for any team out there

by DoWork on Feb 23, 2010 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Well...

they were both poorly coached in the old system, as were all defensive backs (if nobody could cover a double move, you’ve either gotten together a uniquely untalented group of players or you’ve really shortchanged them in terms of pro-level coaching). But while the new coaching staff might be good for Rogers, we still have Jackson as our safeties coach. If he was a part of the problem with the way Landry was playing, then there might not be much chance for Landry to improve. Anyway, Rogers has had his bags packed for months, ever since he became the goat for all the problems of our DBs. He might be happy to stay, but I’m sure he’ll have no regrets about leaving if it comes to that.

Money will speak loudly

as to whether he is here or not. Hopefully, all our Dbacks are working out with Darryl Green even as we speak.

Only DHall is last I heard

Tryon worked exclusively w/ DG last year and he did play better.

is there anyway we can get Rogers' ass there?

maybe while DHall’s learning to cover better, Rogers can be taught to catch.

Hate to say it but we need Los

Cornerbacks are NOT a dime a dozen. While his inability to catch is maddening, I worry that we would be able to replace his coverage skills. He is also an above average physical corner…he can tackle.

I don’t know…the devil you know is always better than the devil you don’t I guess…though that is hardly a ringing endorsement for a millionaire athlete.

by Sugar on Feb 23, 2010 3:17 PM EST reply actions

I derive a sick humour from watching him try to catch passes

but the flip side of that is that if the balls are hitting Carlos in the hands/chest, then the recievers aren’t catching them—which is really his job description.

by CarverM on Feb 23, 2010 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

Completely agree

CB’s are very hard to find. Everyone must realize that we can’t have the best player at every position.

Nice point
that we can’t have the best player at every position.

Carlos Rogers

He’s not good at picking off QB’s at all. But if he can improve his covering skills a little he won’t have many chances anyways. Which means that the other players that have better hands may get more opportunities to catch them balls.

by skinsnyankees on Feb 23, 2010 5:46 PM EST reply actions

Good point...

Let’s hope it becomes reality.

by Scott E on Feb 24, 2010 8:25 AM EST up reply actions

He needs to create TO's.

The mark of a good CB is his ability to get TO’s. Carlos just doesn’t do that. Opposing QB’s are aware of his hands. So even when he’s in position, he doesn’t make the play. It’s a double-edged sword because we lose so much momentum when the ball is up, hits him right in the hands, and he drops it. A couple of plays later, the opposing offense scores and you’re left thinking that he could have prevented points from going on the board.

by J.Cash on Feb 23, 2010 11:11 PM EST reply actions

It's not all bad

Sometimes he bats it in the air for another receiver to catch it, and I do think we got a couple INTs from balls that deflected off his facemask or hands (something real hard). A lot of that I think will change with better coaching, schemes, etc. and a more positive team attitude. Good things are going to start happening for this team. You heard it here, first! :)
