The 80 (and 53 eventually) man roster in 2010: The Bigger Question
Currently (2/19/10) the Redskins’ roster has 77 players. The breakdown of this total is 38 offensive, 34 defensive, and 5 special teams. Assuming there will be no more than 5 free agents added to the roster after March 5, the numbers players on the current roster will need to be reduced by 2 in March. Also assuming that the Team will managed to get an additional 3 players in the draft, that will amount to another 8 players that need to be waived after April 4 plus any UDFA (4 to 6) that will be brought in. This means a reduction of 14 to 16 from the current roster by early April. Depending on who those moves are will determine the difference of the face of the 2010 Team versus that of 2009.
Some of the older players could be cut without much issue: Todd Collins ($2.5 million cap hit) and Renaldo Wynn ($.5 hit and also an unrestricted free agent). Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas should be given their due or let down slowly. Samuels should retire for his health’s sake as well as his nearly a $5 million cap hit. Thomas is also about a $5 million cap hit and he is still marginal for making it through an 18 game season. There is some advantage to the Team if they would be off the roster by March 1(?). The Red snapper, Ethan Albright, LS, as well as UFA, should be allowed to compete for this special team slot, yet young competition is on board in Nick Sundberg.
Some experienced backup quarterback such as Rex Grossman, UFA, (who is acquainted with Little Shanny’s offensive schemes) should be acquired. Whether or not the Skins can sign Rex Hadnot is up in the air. Tiller - http://www.hogshaven.com/2010/2/17/1314987/ways-to-obtain-more-draft-picks – has suggested some, but many had serious injuries in the 2009 season or are restricted free agents. UFA could be added for depth at some positions that would help in a 3-4 defensive scheme. More help is needed at FS and CB, yet the draft maybe the way to move for these roster positions, but not guys like Danby and their moola bucks demands.
The options that the teams with 1st to 3rd picks in the 1st round take may determine what the Skins do with the 4th pick. For example, the Patriots may be willing to trade for the 4th pick if Gerald McCoy or Suh would be on board for their later 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick. This can be mapped out before the draft. The Skins would pick up an additional 2nd round pick and thus be able to get two early OL slots filled and any one of a QB, FS, or RB. Another possibility would be to trade with Carolina for the Skins high 2nd round pick for Carolina’s later 2nd round pick and a 3rd round pick. All of this would occur without the loss of some of the fan’s cherished favorites. That gets the Skins up to 7 draft picks, if all goes well.
It is likely that some player or players would need to be sacrificed to obtain more draft picks. What the Team does not do with roster for the 2010 season will need to be done by the 2011or 2012 seasons, but resisting this change is denying the inevitable. So the final roster is the Bigger Question for the 2010 season. It maybe possible to find some players after the 53 man cut down in early September or by raiding some other teams’ practice squads as the season progresses.

Dansby, and others
may just want fair market value and a 3-4 year deal. I don’t think this years FA crop, minus Peppers, will demand the huge contracts that we have seen given out over the past couple years.
Tiller - What I have in mind in regard to guys like Dansby and Peppers is the new cap
in 2011. Sure the salaries can be front loaded in the uncapped year. My intent in this post is more to focus on the transitions that will take place rather rapidly. The more older players the Team keeps on the roster, the less they can do with free agent veterans to add balance to the roster as well as the limitations the retention of older veterans on even look sees of UDFA rookies. The guys with grade 30 were essentially not scouted. A number of players on the current Skins’ roster had ratings of 30 and are not bad players. Horton was only graded at 31 even at a school like UCLA – so much for scouts subjectivity.

Free agents
Free agents are no longer on the team as of March 5th
On March 5th: The following players are no longer Redskins
The team’s restricted free agents are: defensive tackle Lorenzo Alexander, quarterback Jason Campbell, safety Reed Doughty, defensive tackle Kedric Golston, offensive tackle Stephon Heyer, linebacker Rocky McIntosh, defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery, guard Will Montgomery, cornerback Carlos Rogers and linebacker Chris Wilson.
Redskins can match any offer made to keep the player or tender an offer to the player but until the offer is signed they are not on the team
The team’s eight unrestricted free agents can take any offer they receive and are not beholden to the Redskins. This group includes: long snapper Ethan Albright, defensive end Phillip Daniels, offensive tackle Levi Jones, center Casey Rabach, punter Hunter Smith, offensive lineman Mike Williams, defensive end Renaldo Wynn and tight end Todd Yoder.
All 8 of these players are no longer on the Roster on March 5th and unless resigned nothing else will be required
Data from Redskins insider
Free agents
Very interesting – thanks for posting. looks to me as if none of the unrestricted FAs would want to or really could leave the Skins, and the Skins can always keep the restricted ones, so practically speaking, the Redskins can just decide who they want to keep.
I'm a little fuzzy on one issue...
What about guys who do not get picked up – either out of the draft or who weren’t in the draft? Can they be tapped as a resource? I know Jarmon cost us a third, but I thought he was taken in a supplemental draft.
My thinking is that with so many lineman (Sr. + Jr. coming out to avoid rookie cap) that we might pick up a guy or two we could develop for the future of our line. Would that not cost us draft picks? I know it’s a long shot, but we need to pursue everything we can to get good players. Shanny seems to favor non-typical physical specimens at OLine, so some guys could get completely overlooked.
Any thoughts on this?
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

Many of these players are not discussed on HH when it comes to team depth by position and the draft. Scouts Inc also

Grades
These are fairly worthless, but I have to wonder about the low grades for Alexander and Horton, among others. Why is McCauley in there?
Why is McCauley in there?
He was a 3rd round draft pick. Or did you mean a grade of 87? He is on the Skins roster. As a whole Scouts Inc. grades relate closely with CBS Sports overall prospective draft rankings. Scouting seems to be on the subjective side. If the first round has so many bust, it is reason to wonder since those prospects usually grade over 90.
There are a few other players
that have not been mentioned that much on HH, if at all. 1) Curtis Gatewood, LB; 6-3; 240; 1; Vanderbilt; 05-18-1985; 50, 2) P.J. Hill, RB; 5-10; 218; R; Wisconsin; 01-03-1987; 47, 3) Alvin Bowen; LB; 6-1; 223; 1; Iowa State; 12-24-1983; 48, and 4) James Robinson, WR; 6-3; 200; 1; Butler Community College (Kan.); 12-06-1982.
Starting with Robinson, he is probably the fastest man on the Redskins roster. His 40 yd. time is less than 4.2. He played in the CFL and is considered a raw talent. I did not include him on the list before. He might be the fastest guy in the NFL. Transaction, January 5.
Other transactions for young players: TE, Lee Vickers; LB, Darrel Young; CB, Marcus McCauley; RB, P.J. Hill; and LB, Curtis Gatewood. These guys add to the depth of the roster in some of the lesser needed positions.
P.J. Hill is more of a power runner and before the end of his last season at Wisconsin weighed 240 lbs. We will have to see how he competes, but coupled with Aldridge he does alleviate the need to draft late round running backs somewhat. Likewise, McCauley and
Gatewood beef up the roster at CB and LB respectively.
On another note, I have been watching the Scouts Inc rankings for the first round for a few weeks (End of December) and have begun to question whether the grades they assign can be compared from year to year. Anthony Davis’ grade has moved up considerably and is now assigned a 97 versus Russell Okung, a 96. The rankings of juniors has been the most flexible in the 1st and 2nd rounds since most declared for the draft in January. The ranking seem to change in relationship to other players, i.e., fitting the grades to fit the respective rankings other prospects rather than on some scouts appraisal. I don’t know how subjective this manipulation is but it does imply some question about comparing grades from one draft class to another. http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft

These ratings can be very subjective
as they are often comparing guys who have been scouted to guys who haven’t been scouted by McShays cronies.
big fan of Hill
he tore it up at Wisconsin. Hopefully he can run like that big fullback thirty minutes up 95 north.(aka LeRon McClain for you slowpokes.)
