Dansby is one of 3 unrestricted free agent safeties that look good to me.

The 3-4 scheme of things requires two inside linebackers. Fletcher and Dansby could play at the same time. He is 28 years old.
RILB, Overall (OVR) PFF rating = 2.0. He is about as good on run defense and pass defense.
http://profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2008&page=&surn=D&playerid=1754

The other two are outside linebackers:
1. Tully Banta-Cain, age 29, ROLB, snaps 725, OVR 21.8, run def. 11.1, pass rush 14.9, pass cov. -2.2, penalties -2.0.
http://profootballfocus.com/by_player.php?tab=by_player&season=2009&surn=B&playerid=1534&group=6
He did not perform as well with the 49ers as he did with the Pats in the 2009 season.
http://www.nfl.com/players/tullybanta-cain/profile?id=BAN815644

Another inside linebacker possibility is Larry Foote, MLB, 2009 OVR 5.3, run defense 7.6, pass rush and penalties hurt rating. 2008 OVR 11.5, DOB: 1980-06-12, almost 30.
http://www.nfl.com/players/larryfoote/profile?id=FOO434041

2. Paris Lenon, age 32, WLB/SLB, snaps 467, OVR 1.2, run def. 4.2, pass rush -1.0, pass cov. 0.0, penalties -2.0

His age is against him for more than a few seasons.

by Jefferson1935 on Feb 14, 2010 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely a must get, that would be my #1- FA priority.

He would be the equivalent of the Fletcher signing to run Williams defense.
Dansby is in his prime, can play inside in a 4-3 or outside in the 3-4.
He would be the leader for Haslett’s defense, and would replace Fletcher this year or next. This signing would allow the team to address other positons for the next 5 years.
The other needs in FA to be addressed would be, in order, RG or RT, FS, NT( if they make switch) and depending on who they release, Cb, Rb, Wr, back-up QB.
They should sign a new defensive leader at the LB position for long term(Dansby), and most other FA signings could be short- term or stop-gap additions.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 14, 2010 7:47 PM EST reply actions

McIntosh is restricted so I am sure he stays.

Along with their other restricted FAs.
I don’t believe many RFAs will sign long-term agreements because they would heavily favor their existing team. Unless the team decides that player will be in their long-term plans and are willing to overpay now to lock that player up.

I like this and think he would be a good addition

However it is Redskins silly season

True

Also anticipate more than a few skins being released or moved this off-season.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 14, 2010 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

there will be alot of moves this off-season,Campbell being #1 off-season move.

there is alot of teams waiting for Redskins to tender Campbell to level 1-3 contract,he will bea good back up QB to somebody.

the Skins are always a target of FA's

They all sit around and say

“Damn, how do I get me some of that Snyder money”

and in a Cap Free year even more so

I just wonder if the Cap Management genius Bruce ALlen is going to result in a lot of dissapointed FA’s around the league

Dansby should be a prime target for ShanAllen & Co.

Do not let the Giants get him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Their LB corps has destroyed us forever, now it’s our turn.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 14, 2010 9:42 PM EST up reply actions

Personally I would rather us just draft somebody

Picking up Dansby would mean that we have to overpay him. I am hoping to see the Redskins break out of that mold this year. I would like to see us start building more through the draft. I have a great feeling about Jerry Hughes (OLB/DE) who is coming out in the draft this year. please check out this link.

I agree but.....

we can’t do it all through the draft. It is has to be a smart mix between the 2. We are getting old and have no depth at LB. That position alone can’t be fixed in one draft. If the price is right for Dansby….I think it’s a great move. He could be a solid guy for a few years why we get new players in and trained. My idea of building a great team….means you don’t HAVE to play your RCs…..we need to try to get there. I am saying pay the guy 60 million over 5…..no…..if the price is right.

by shvd98z24 on Feb 15, 2010 5:22 AM EST up reply actions

Agree

but if we’re picking up a hybrid LB, I still think Brandon Graham is the beast to get if we go draft vice FA.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Feb 16, 2010 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

I am with you....

It’s all about how it unfolds. If Dansby comes in at a good price……you know what you have. You can go after other positions…..or still bring in Graham with 3 very solid LBs to help him get up to speed in Dansby, Fletcher, and McIntosh…….I am leaving Orakpo out on purpose….he is still learning….don’t crush me guys!

by shvd98z24 on Feb 16, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

I understand your thinking, but....

if they draft Hughes, they lose the ability to draft a starting O-lineman with that pick. That could be a great spot to pick up a 10 year pro-bowl type lineman. In my opinion, Dansby is the best LB the team can get for the next 5 years. He can play at any spot and will be the defensive leader.
Hughes could be great, but Dansby is already great, plus he will be the leader out there for the next 5 years. And they can draft a great O-lineman.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 15, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

there were

a bunch of flat footed O-linemen in that You tube piece…they stood out more to me than Hughes did…Mountain West…old WAC stuff

Draft

We have too many holes on the team to draft for all of them. Signing Dansby would remind me of the Marcus Washington signing from a few years ago — pick up an OLB in his prime to make an impact for a few seasons. I think it’s a great move, because Dansby is certainly a great player. Very underrated on that Cardinals defense.

by mmford10 on Feb 15, 2010 9:40 AM EST reply actions

I wouldn't be against it

though I’d be lying if I said the prospect of yet another “exciting” off season is already starting to fray my nerves. How long til draft day again?

by SkinsOsTerps on Feb 15, 2010 9:56 AM EST reply actions

Amen

While it will be nice—>Albert Haynesworth’s addition took an 8-8 team to a 4-12 team whoo-hoo.

I’m glad AH is a Redskin and believe he can help the Redskins down the road, next year and beyond but winning the FA cycle every year has done nothing to change the record.

It’s time to establish an identity and for the team to play Redskin football.

by dr WNC on Feb 15, 2010 10:09 AM EST up reply actions

Great Question-->That's whats been missing

It’s going to be defined and developed by Allen and Shanahan.
I’m not sure what that is going to be exactly, as it has not been defined however I am trusing Allen and Shanahan are making that plan to begin to execute in the next couple of months.

by dr WNC on Feb 15, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

Historically?

I’d say it’s a run first offense with linemen that beat you in the trenches and back-ups who serve as “replaceable parts” a la the old “Oriole way” did it in baseball plus a hard hitting defense that knows how to end the career of whoever Dallas puts behind center (not that I cheer for injuries). Not flashy but tough and able to win games by dominating the line of scrimmage.

That isn’t necessarily the way of the future but thats what I’d say “Redskin football” was in the past.

by SkinsOsTerps on Feb 15, 2010 1:53 PM EST reply actions

I hope that is what Allen and Shanahan develop

but either way Redskins football is winning Superbowls, with various players but a core group, usually lineman which are the leaders.

by dr WNC on Feb 15, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

If they pick up Dansby...

that should mean that Orakpo plays more DE, where he’s a problem for any team.

by J.Cash on Feb 15, 2010 6:40 PM EST reply actions

Dansby

Is a great LB in my eyes. We are very limited on draft picks this year as always. Adding Dansby would take away one need and allow us to spend more picks on linemen. The more linemen we draft the better because that’s more we can workout and find a good group. As stated above Dansby would take away LB as a need for a few years. So by time Dansby is done one could hope the OL is solved then we will have picks to replace him and other possible holes.

by skinsnyankees on Feb 15, 2010 10:29 PM EST reply actions

The Cardinals do not have a good position.

“In other words, there’s only one team on Dansby’s wish list.

The highest bidder.

And that team most likely won’t be the Cardinals. Under the CBA, the third straight use of the franchise tag would require the Cardinals to offer him a one-year guaranteed contract equal to the average of the five highest-paid players in the league from 2009. Based on NFLPA records, they are: Peyton Manning ($21,199,998), Julius Peppers ($16,683,000), Donovan McNabb ($16,704,170), Matt Cassel ($15,200,000), and Tom Brady ($14,620,000).

The average? $16,881,433.60.

There’s no way the Cardinals pay Dansby — or anyone — more than $1 million per game."

In other words, there is going to be a bidding war for Danby. He has paid his dues with the Cardinals.
Year Team Base Salary Sign Bonus Other Bonus Total Salary Cap Value Position
2009 Cardinals $ 9,678,000 $ 0 $ 2,340 $ 9,680,340 $ 9,680,340 LB

I don’t not want to get into this roller coaster ride of, “Let’s Rape the Redskins 2010” for some guy looking to be the “highest paid (insert position here) in NFL History.”

SpottieOttieDopaliscious

by Rekka on Feb 16, 2010 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

The contract would have to make sense.

Dansby is already the 2nd highest paid LB. He wants security, he is probably looking at a 5 year deal in the 50-60M$ range. The beauty of a year like this is instead of back-loading a contract to save cap space, this is a free year to front-load a contract to take the biggest hit in an uncapped year.
Granted this move could mean losing Fletcher(7.1M) this year, probably in a trade, but Fletcher is gone next year regardless, and the defense needs a new leader.
This would be a major signing and requires serious thought.
Not signing Dansby, and then losing Fletch next year would mean LB is a top priority. If the team is serious about the 3-4 switch, that would not be good.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 16, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

No expensive free agents

We’re already working our way through a generation of expensive veterans.

Let’s ditch a couple of them before we start bringing in new ones.

calls for some expensive signings though.

by SSBlitz on Feb 16, 2010 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

are you going to pay them all their money THIS year?

if not, we’ll be right back where we started with too many expensive vet contracts.

And cap or no, you can’t build a young hungry team with a whole bunch of vets who have already gotten their Big Contract.

I really hope not

Having youth is great, but I don’t want this team to turn into a daycare.

Veteran leadership is needed at a lot of positions so to get rid of most of them would be insane.

by Rekka on Feb 17, 2010 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

They will bring new leaders in with experience.

Smart free agent signings to be leaders for the younger players.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 17, 2010 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

saying what they will do

is different from what we’re looking at right now. We don’t know that they will go after Dansby, and depending on how much he costs I hope they don’t. They do however, have an incredible leader in Fletcher. Depending on how much Clark costs, he would be a nice veteran for the defensive backfield.

SpottieOttieDopaliscious

by Rekka on Feb 17, 2010 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

Sounds like Clark is staying in Pittsburgh.

He wants to stay, and they want him.
Fletcher is still good, but he is in his last year and he is 34.
I am not sure if they go for Dansby, but he would fit into the system, and be the leader that Fletch is going forward.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 17, 2010 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

I'm torn on signing a vet receiver

because Moss is good, but I don’t think he’d be able to show the big guys how to use their bodies (read size) to their advantage.

SpottieOttieDopaliscious

by Rekka on Feb 17, 2010 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

I think they sign Kevin Walter to replace ARE.

If they could get a decent pick for Moss, I think for sure they would deal him.
Both would be the right moves going forward.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 17, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

I liked the McCardell signing

but there’s nothing like having a fellow teammate to look up to, you know? Somebody that you’re going to battle with every sunday would have an effect on you that the coach doesn’t.

SpottieOttieDopaliscious

by Rekka on Feb 17, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yep, that's not Moss.

I do think that McCardell is going to make a huge difference.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 17, 2010 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

now if the conditioning department could get their shit together so they could all stay on the field we’d be able to look at something that could be special.

I do like the work they did with malcolm kelly though.

after he talked to CP. I don’t feel good about this at all. Great player, but so much of this stinks of the past.
