Bills Strong Safety Donte Whitner is a Redskin?

I'm going out on a limb here but a person of note I've met told me Donte Whitner will be a Redskin come the start of free agency. What I find odd about this is that Donte Whitner is a Strong Safety, which is not an area of need (you'd think) with Chris Horton and Reed Doughty. Donte's career stats aren't anything to brag about nor is the fact he was arrested and tasered 10 months ago.

Ken and I just had a quick chat about Donte and he added:

"I'm a Donte fan. He is a very good tackler and an exceptional athlete. He was a top draft pick in 2006 and I think he has fallen short of expectations. He is very smart and does a lot of thinking on the field. I am unsure if his disappointing INT production is his fault or the system's. One thing I am sure of: he can hit."

Does this mean he'd be moved to FS or Laron would stay at FS? It's anyone's guess. I am working on a second source now...stay tuned.

This is puzzling.

Are we stock-piling strong safeties like Gruden used to stock-pile QBs?

Anything that would move Landry to FS is a horrible thing.

If Whitner can play FS at a high level, then sign him up. It would put us, Eric Berry Lovers, to rest when the #4 pick comes up.

Orakpo!!! Russel Okung next year!

puzzling doesn't begin to cover it

save that money for a LB or CB. Convert one of our MANY SS to FS if that’s what they’re looking to do.

Ok I just checked

He was the 8th overall pick a few years ago and he’ll only be 25 this July. Maybe with a change of scenery and scheme he can add some value.
Still, their’s really no room for another safety, something’s going to have to give. If all of this is true.

by skinsymets on Feb 12, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

my thing is

He’s a Strong Safety, we’re absolutely loaded on free safeties. If we let Chris Horton or Reed Doughty try at free safety and they don’t make the grade, fine. We still have 2 SS. If we bring this guy in and he doesn’t work out at Free Safety, then we have yet ANOTHER strong safety on our roster.

See what I’m sayin?

Its like that "Hoarders" show on A&E

we were without once, so we’re hoarding safeties so we never have to go without again.

by CarverM on Feb 12, 2010 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

First off, he isn’t even free agent until after the upcoming season, so that means a trade would be required to get him now. In that case, why would you trade for a guy that had 2 picks in a defensive scheme that was second in the NFL in that category. Sure he only played in ten games, so if you’re going to argue that, then you have to look at the less than stellar tackle production. If the Bills trade Whitner they do have guys to work with like George Wilson, who had to step in and play linebacker for them for most of the year, and Bryan Scott who had 81 tackles in just nine games last year. So the Bills do have the freedom to make a move, but for who? Whitner isn’t worth a 4th overall and I’m not so sure he’s worth a 37th overall either and the Redskins don’t really have any guys that the Bills need. Their biggest problem is the offensive line and the Redskins are one of the few teams with a more porous offensive line than the Bills. This is a non-issue. I’d be incredibly shocked to see this happen.

by tlama2517 on Feb 15, 2010 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

Scott was the one who played linebacker last year. Wilson was FS off and on when Whitner and Jairus Byrd were out.

Yes, he has played corner with the Bills

I just saw this thread on cross thead, i’m a Bills fan.

Donte has played some spot corner with the Bills, as you probably know, we have been decimated with injuries while Jauron was here.

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

Really makes no sense since Whitner isn't a free agent.

He is under contract this year, signed a 5 yr/29M contract in 2006 w/Buf. He is listed as a natural free safety.
Skins have to make a trade with Buffalo to acquire him.
Please do not give up any picks for this guy, he is about to lose his job to George Wilson. Buffalo is purging salary since they are hemorrhaging financially.

Buffalo tried to hire Shanahan, maybe he likes Whitner and used the interview to also get to know Buffalo, so if there were any players he wanted to pluck from us, he already had some dialect twith the Bills FO prior to being hired as Redkins HC.

Buffalo of course, may just cut him.

The Bills are one of the teams expected to throw players overboard before FA starts.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 12, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Cutting a 1st rd pick would not go over well in Buffalo.

They will probably market him to get the best offer they can.
I hope they don’t make a move for him unless he does get cut.
He has corner speed, so he could play FS, but he has been a huge disappointment for them. Not to mention being arrested twice, and the aforementioned ‘tase’ job he deserved.
Just doesn’t seem like a Shanny/Haslett guy.

I have read that Buffalo has one of the worst....

stadium/owner deals in the league. Almost every team is getting or has gotten a new stadium with Luxury box seats and advantageous tax credits. I have read that the Bills want a new stadium or at least a new deal? I hope for the best for you in Buffalo with the team. A new revenue deal and the new CBA could really hurt the Bills and Wilson.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 13, 2010 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

That may be true, but the stadium is owned free and clear and, while it’s not in the best shape, is still viable. The point about the CBA is precisely why Ralph Wilson was against the last one. And now, hopefully, the rest of the owners have figured that out.

Actually the best tickets

Are lower level sideline and the 2010 pricing is $80 a game.

And you don’t even need a PSL to pay that.

I’m pretty sure he only got arrested once.Overall, he’s been a pretty reliable guy. Certainly not Pacman territory. Or even Marshawn.
I’m not sure about him being a “huge disappointment”. He probably hasn’t been worth his draft pick, but then again we drafted him earlier than he was projected anyway (sigh). If I were you, and the Redskins picked him up, I wouldn’t be disappointed. I don’t know what your current safety situation is, but if you’re in the market for a solid starting SS, you’re probably getting a good deal.

I would be very surprised, I am sure there would be several teams that would give a 3rd for him and some that would give a very late 1 or 2, he is still young and has experience and still has room to improve.

Buffalo isn’t hemorrhaging financially. It is profitable, the tv contract split equally insures that. They just make lower profits, since the profits usually come from gate and licensed products. Buffalo can’t charge as much at the gate, and the sell less licensed merchandise than bigger markets, but they still pull a profit.

A lot of reports that Buffalo...

is in bad financial shape along with Jax and Cin. The Bills will be devastated if the owners change their revenue sharing agreement, which seems likely. I have read multiple reports that if the revenue sharing changes and without a new stadium, Wilson will have to sell.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 13, 2010 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

It’s not that they are in bad financial shape, just small markets.

by MattRichWarren on Feb 14, 2010 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

Wilson won’t sell until he’s dead. He has no reason to. He is an original owner and has made his investment a thousand times over.

The owners are talking about doing away with a 100M dollar revenue sharing agreement. That averages to be something like 10M for the ten hardest hit teams financially. Is 10 million dollars going to significantly reduce the Bills ability to sign players? I doubt it.

Since when?

by MattRichWarren on Feb 14, 2010 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

Since 06, when the CBA was renegotiated.

Reports are that Wilson lost substantial dollars since the recession started.
L.A. is getting a new franchise very soon, it looks like either Buffalo or Jacksonville.

by MattRichWarren on Feb 15, 2010 12:12 AM EST up reply actions

You seem like you are closer to their situation.

I think Buffalo is a great football town. Hope everything works out for all Bills’ fans.
I am just stating what I have heard and read. Where there is smoke, there is fire, and Buffalo is smoking like Three-Mile Island. We’ll find out when free agency starts, but all indications are that Buffalo is having a rather large yard-sale.

by johnnydee83 on Feb 15, 2010 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

“All indications”? The Bills were up against the salary cap last year. What smoke are you talking about?

by MattRichWarren on Feb 16, 2010 8:25 AM EST up reply actions

Multiple reports that the franchise cannot sustain itself...

without significant changes in the CBA, and their stadium deal. If the league decides to split revenues differently, as seems very likely, Wilson will have to sell. There would be interested prospective owners, but only if they move the franchise. I am not aware of anyone that would keep the team in Buffalo without a new stadium. It is not a secret, Jacksonville and then Buffalo will need major help from the league to keep their franchises. There are half a dozen teams in trouble as well, but not as much as those two. L.A. has been promised a new franchise, and they will have a new stadium by 2012.

Has all hope for Landry at FS been thrown out the door?

I really have no idea what the possibility of him coming here means but if we’re getting any safety from buffalo it should be Jarius Bird.
If this move is true, I don’t like it from an outsiders perspective. I’m a huge Horton fan and still have faith that Landry can step his game up at FS. I know he got burnt alot this past season but when he learns to play under control and discipline he will become pro bowl caliber.

Keep Horton and Doughty at SS, keep Landry at FS and bring in another FS to compete with him.

This just confuses me all to hell.

by travisjh86 on Feb 12, 2010 1:34 PM EST reply actions

HAHAHAHA. No deal.

On the plus side, Whitner does have versatility. That and his intelligence are his main drawing points. Whitner, in his time in BUF, has played SS, FS, and nickel CB. He’s had a few injuries and won’t be incredible anywhere, but he’ll be above average pretty much wherever you put him. I’m more of a Whitner fan than a lot of the Bills fans you’ll see, and I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves. He’s not the interception machine that everybody loves to see, but he’s a solid tackler and a smart player with decent speed.

Donte can play

I am as intrigued by this move as many of you, but I wonder how alone I am in my interest in seeing what a Whitner/Landry safety tandem is capable of (besides getting beaten deep by DeSean Jackson twice a game.)

No matter how solid Doughty and Horton are, I think Whitner is an undeniable upgrade for us. Landry and Whitner in the defensive backfield is better than Landry and either Doughty or Horton. The issue is that we have been inconsistent and spotty at safety for the last couple years.

I welcome the addressing of this issue from the front office, and we shall see I suppose…

If anyone is looking for a connection between Jim Haslett and Donte Whitner, here it is:

They both played defense for the Buffalo Bills. Not sure how that ranks as far as “connections” go, but it is something.

Whitner

Is a very interesting prospect for the reason that the guy is an amazing athlete. With the right coaching, him and Landry could be the top safety tandem in the league because they are both ball-hawking, good tackling (when not whiffing on a hit), and unbelievably fast. If we coach them up good, I think we’d have something amazing.

it’s a ball hawk. Just because you heard it somewhere doesn’t mean it’s true. He’s got 4 INTs in 4 years. He is a good tackler – I guess, he doesn’t really stand out or make big tackles, but he also regularly gets trucked by running backs.

Justin Medlock, 26, is the kicker.

Left footed kicker signed by KC in the 5th rd in 06.
Long of 52 in Canada last season, but very bad NFL career.
Can’t hurt to bring him in.

The only way I see this working

is if Landry is moving to SS, which he should, since he excels against the run, but falters against the pass. Of course, Blache stuck him back there for two years playing the Sean Taylor position without noting that Landry ISN’T SEAN TAYLOR! He’s not the type of safety who can play 30 yards off the ball and be expected to do well. How many of those actually exist?

Secret plan to move to a 3-3-5 stack defense?

by lynxtheone on Feb 12, 2010 9:24 PM EST reply actions

They're going to move him to CB

Just a hunch, but I asked that question earlier in the post and “The Buffalo Kid” replied that he has played CB. So, my theory, is that he’s either replacing or challenging Rogers at CB, or replacing Smoot at Nickel.

by J.Cash on Feb 13, 2010 12:34 PM EST reply actions

I'd be scared of your CBs then.

No, not as a player but as a fan. If you’re lining Whitner up at CB you’re f’ed in the a.

Not even Nickel???

He’s got to be an improvement over Fred Smoot.

DONTE WHITNER IS A FS so what the hell were u talking about.

by gaudiomatt on Feb 14, 2010 1:11 PM EST reply actions

Hello???

I questioned if he played any Corner and someone replied that he did. It would make more sense for the Redskins to convert him to a corner or Nickelback than to play him at FS where we’re already set.

Calm your tone. Geez.

by J.Cash on Feb 14, 2010 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

Yes. He’s played all 3. He’s done nickel CB sparingly (due to injury) but has done decently when he’s been there. Mostly been at SS, but has also done FS. One big problem for him is that he hasn’t been able to get situated at a single position and stay there. He starts at SS, he gets bumped over to play FS due to injury. He starts at FS, he gets injured and bumped out by Byrd, who looks like the second coming of Night Train Lane. But he always stays in the lineup unless he’s injured.

Donte

The kid is a joke. Always talking sh*t via twitter, making no impact durring games, and getting hurt year after year. There is a reason we might trade him he just isn’t anything more than a back-up S that can play nickle CB (not every good CB at that). As a tOSU fan I was SHOCKED we took him at 8. He makes no plays, is a avg. tackler, he is just avg. at everything. Bryd had more picks his 1st 3 games starting at FS than Donte has had in 3 years. G.Wilson (a former WR) played lights out a SS this year moving little Donte to the pine where he belongs. Would I take him as a back-up S, yea sure, starter, I’d fell bad.

You can have him

I would be thrilled if the bills would get a 4th rounder for this guy. He’s a bum he has never been the player the bills thought he would be. You would be better off without him. He’ll make enough plays to warrant a shot and whenever he gets one he blows the oppurtunity.

well, my 2nd source said there is no evidence of it...

Which is why I put a question mark on the original story. I am not one just to post random rumors, this one had some legs which I think merits the talks. Supposedly he was house shopping in DC on top of that rumor. We’ll see I guess.

Thanks Brian

Yea, I had heard from a source he was living here, and I went through the real estate database, but no houses came up with his name on it. (purchased at least).

It’s all very bizarre to me.
