Dan Snyder has long meddled in this franchise's personnel decision making and we have long payed a price for it. We have traded away draft picks year after year, overpaid aging veterans so they can go into the sunset with bags of money, and made terrible decisions with personnel period. Dan Snyder and his puppet Vinny Cerrato have set this franchise back behind anything that has been unfathomable and we have no talent left on our roster save Orakpo, Landry, and Cooley (Yes, that's literally all of the talent they have drafted). Snyder finally realized his ways clearly weren't working and decided to hire a General Manager and a Head Coach.
Note: The following is all Speculation
During this offseason the situation in Philadelphia changed and Andy Reid realized that it was either him or Donovan McNabb who had to go, thus the trade talks started to heat up. Andy Reid realized that McNabb was on the decline and at 34 years old he couldn't live up to the way he has played for the past decade, but because he realizes he has a lot of leverage asked for a 2nd round pick and a 3rd/4th. Dan Snyder jumped when he saw that Philadelphia was in his mind "giving" away Donovan McNabb and he realized that the team would finally have a "Franchise Quarterback", but more importantly he would fill the seats at Fedex Field.
Snyder then started discussing the move with Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan, Shanahan of course went along with it which makes him just as guilty, and they decided to trade the 2nd rounder and 3rd/4th round picks for the Franchise Quarterback that the Redskins had so long been missing. Donovan McNabb came to Washington and we had the press conference/typical Redskins expectations. During the offseason Mike Shanahan also had to deal with the giant mess that is Albert Haynesworth which was retained from the previous regime. Shanahan clearly asked Haynesworth to take the money and adjust to the 3-4 or refuse the money and be traded. Haynesworth obviously took the money and after that all hell broke loose, but I'm speculating during all of this Snyder basically said "Make it work".
All of these moves have Snyder's fingerprints all over it and if you don't think so, then look at the behavioral patterns of this franchise the past decade. In the past few weeks, all of these moves have blown up in everyone's face and Shanahan is sitting with a grin because he knew this wouldn't work of course he's just as guilty for letting it happen.
Moving forward, we have to give Mike Shanahan the ability to draft his players and make this system work, I'm probably going to catch a lot of crap for this, but let me ask you this what other options do we have? Do we start over again? Do we bring in another coach so he can draft more of the same players? So that coach can trade away more draft picks to bring in "his" players? Why are you surprised we're on the brink of 5-11? Did you forget we had no talent?
I'm going to sit back and let Mike Shanahan do his thing because right now what else can we do? We can't hire another coach because that would put us back even further. I want to see this work and I believe it will work, this upcoming offseason will be crucial to this franchise as will next offseason and at some point we will begin winning.
