Clinton Portis Put on Injured Reserved; Other News

UpdateRedskins signed RB Andre Brown to their active roster, acc to a league source with knowledge of the situation. (Andre has bounced around every team in the NFL this past year it has seemed. He was originally drafted out of NC State by the Giants.

Some of the latest news out of Redskins Park...

JReidPost Just confirmed that Clinton Portis has been put on season-ending injured reserve.

It's hard to imagine Portis taking another snap for the Burgundy & Gold. I'll do a proper farewell once more news becomes available.

john_keim Casey Rabach says he is ready to play. Wants to try. Hicks said he is optimistic about playing Sunday.

FB Darrel Young: "Look for Terrence Austin to become a significant part of the offense this year."

Brett Favre's first NFL pass was an INT, for a TD, against the Redskins.

There is a lot of news to digest here. Portis' confirmed move to IR likely is the end of an era. Ken had been pushing the case HARD for Portis to make the Hall of Fame, but with this news, that chance is likely gone. Rabach with a sprained knee makes me nervous. I expect Will Montgomery to be inserted in Center at some point at the Vikings game regardless. The news Terrence Austin is excelling to an active roster spot can't happen soon enough. He showed excellent hands in pre-season. By all common logic, he cannot be any worse than Galloway.

Damn. Portis out really hurts

We need him back there for his pass blocking and dump pass receiving skills if nothing else, but he was looking GOOD against the Titans.

Dude, no salary cap

And I bet if we asked, CP would play for less, knowing his role is less.

And it’s not “your” money anyway (yeah, I know, it is in the prices that we pay, but still).

We'll probably be playing with scabs anyway

If there is a strike could be another season with scabs. Maybe Portis will cross the picket line to play.

Great

Glad Rabach is ready to play, too bad he just isn’t any good anymore.

CP's blocking skills

will be missed. He’s still the best blocking RB in the NFL.

I really thought the Skins would use CP only for blocking vs the Titans to help ease that injury back. Nope…they ran him hard. Ah well….end of an era.

he could restructure his contract for less $…but is a guy w/ this mileage worth a roster spot? I dont think so.

Shanny Clause is coming to town and the restructured deal will get done.

Snyder will find a way to pay him and Shanny did bring in Willie Parker and LJ to camp, so would you be surprised to see CP?

Don’t yell at me draft enthusiast but here is the list of FA RBs this offseason. Torain’s Mr Glass syndrome scares me.

Deangelo Williams CAR
Jamaal Charles KC
Cedric Benson CIN
Jerome Harrison
Michael Bush
Darren Sproles
Joseph Addai
Ronnie Brown
Ricky Williams
Tim Hightower, ARI
Jerious Norwood, ATL
Kevin Smith, DET
Brandon Jackson, GB
Kolby Smith, KC
Fred Taylor, NE
Laurence Maroney, NE
Kevin Faulk, NE
Sammy Morris, NE
Ahmad Bradshaw, NYG
Mike Bell, PHI
Mewelde Moore, PIT
Mike Tolbert, SD
Leon Washington, SEA
Kenneth Darby, STL
Clifton Smith, TB
Willie Parker, WAS
Brian Leonard, CIN (FB)
Deon Anderson, DAL (FB)
Korey Hall, GB (FB)
Vonta Leach, HOU (FB)
Naufahu Tahi, MIN (FB)
Ahmard Hall, TEN (FB)

I hope Shanny continues his young, no name RB carousel though.

I don’t see any starters on there besides D Williams and he’s gonna be expensive. We definitely need a mid round RB

by Mr. E on Nov 24, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Give me a dose of RB Carousel

His system works damn it…. the thing we need most is an interior line. After that I’d probably say a Nose Tackle, then a Wide Receiver (Big, Fast, Strong Threat)

Put me down for a free safety, too. Man coverage and tackling skills required.

The worst part about that is

We would have the best Safety Tandem in the NFL had Sean Taylor not been tragically killed… RIP ST 21. Apparently this Draft class is weak at Free Safety.

Probably not.

The Once and Future King

by FlaGators on Nov 24, 2010 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely he is.

Let him put a little weight on, become the 3rd down back. Keeps the mileage down, gives the best blocking back in the NFL the chance to be on the field in the most critical situations on 3rd down, and the guy catches well out of the backfield. Run him just enough to take the franchise record and he’ll help get us to the playoffs next season.

Clinton Portis, What to say about him?

Well for starters he’s been one of the only true threats we’ve had this past decade and a true Redskin, especially in the past decade. Could we have made the playoffs in 2005 without him? No. We made it to the divisional round of the playoffs that year, no we rode his back to the playoffs. Clinton Portis has been outspoken, insensitive, and boneheaded; however, it still doesn’t mean he wasn’t one of the bright spots of the last decade. I don’t know that he will be a Redskin next year, will he be willing to take a pay cut? maybe. Will Shanahan cut him regardless? Probably. My point is if you’re going to point out his malcontent attitude, then you also have to remember he’s been a great player on the field.

by TerpsAllTheWay on Nov 24, 2010 11:44 AM EST reply actions

CP has been and always will be one of my favorite Redskins

I really thought he’d be back this year. Very upsetting.

CP

It was almost cruel to see him perform well last week before he went down. Kinda like being reminded of what we’ll miss.

OK Keiland and ATV, stay healthy, or in ATV’s case – get healthy, and do some good stuff out there!

what you've just said... is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. Can we please sign Terrence Austin to the 53 man roster...

I’m cringing at the thought of having to see Joey Galloway play 6 more games with the Redskins. Their reasoning behind keeping him they’ve noticed he’s open down field…right.

So long.....

The end of the Portis era is a good thing, time to move on from all these guys who weren’t drafted by the Skins and hit the Jackpot salary wise before they ever put on the burgundy and gold and then used their money/status to buddy up with the owner and undermine coaches. Portis has been washed up for 3 years and I really don’t care what a good blocker he is….we get it, he can block, but what else has he done other than quit on coaches, stay hurt and, collect a fat salary the last 3-4 years. His biggest story this year other than now being put on IR is that he FELL down in open field against the Rams. Peace out Portis, it was real, it was fun, but it wasn’t real fun.

End of an era

Anyone else find it funny that a groin injury finally ended Clinton’s run in Washington?

by HogHunter on Nov 24, 2010 3:34 PM EST reply actions

Portis a Hall of Famer?

If Portis had stayed in Denver, maybe, but Gibbs turned an elusive open field cut back runner into a north west 3 yards and a cloud of dust runner, thus shortening his career.
I don’t know how much people appreciate the pounding Portis took playing for Gibbs. This was not CPs strength as a runner, but CP made it his strength. This guy threw his body into DLers to protect the QB. I am surprised CP has played this long. Larry Brown only managed 4 years playing this kind of game of total physical sacrifice for the team. Portis is still going. This tells me Portis could have run for 15000 yards in his career if he hadn’t hooked up with a coach like Gibbs. I don’t blame Gibbs. He’s in it to win it. Portis never complained, never demanded to be traded. He always wanted the ball and he never flinched at sticking his body in harms way no matter how brutal the result. This may have cost him the Hall of Fame but it will get him into the Redskin Hall of Fame and isn’t that all that matters? That day when he is 40 and he is wheeled out into the middle of Fed-Ex field for fan appreciation day and everybody applauds and mumble to themselves “he ain’t no John Riggens.” Because people in Washington like winners with a drinking problem. They don’t want some loyal self sacrificing I threw my whole career away for a playoff run one season type. no matter how truly gifted a running back he really is, or could have been.

by hambonejackson on Nov 24, 2010 4:14 PM EST reply actions

couldnt agree more. i was and still am very wary of how Gibbs used Portis. square peg round hole.

Damn!

I don’t know what the future holds for CP but, I hope he is willing to re-negotiate his deal or do what ever is neccesary to stay here. I have the utmost respect for what he does (on Sundays). In my mind, he has already been a better back than Riggo, for the simple fact of just think what CP would have done for us with a line like the Hogs.

by tony420 on Nov 24, 2010 5:03 PM EST reply actions

Portis - There has not been much pounding, or wear and tear

in the last two years (since he has played less than a full year), so maybe he has some years left.

by Donnio1234 on Nov 24, 2010 6:03 PM EST reply actions

I surmise that

If Terrence Austin were to, while riding his bicycle to Redskins park, get hit by a truck and, subsequently, have both big toes and his left thurmb amputated, he would STILL

not be any worse than Galloway
