Redskins Sign Former Eagles Safety, Macho Harris & an OLineman

Update: Apparently, Macho Harris was playing football in the Fairfax, VA Flag Football League. So, you know he's ready to start this week.

DeAngelo Hall just broke the news:

@Dhall23: Great News...Happy to Welcome my lil bro and Hokie Macho Harris to the Team! Let's go!-HTTR

The Eagles drafted him in the 5th round of the 2009 draft, but he lost his job to Quintin Demps. He had 15 career interceptions at VA Tech having played initially as a corner. The Eagles of course drafted Nate Allen this year and Macho was released the first week of September this year. He's worked out with many teams including the Lions and Rams, but nothing came of that - likely because he is not practice squad eligible.

Macho fills in for Anderson Russell's spot, who was put on IR after the Titans game.

He's the same age and is from the same county as me...

I’m a little bias b/c he would torch my high school for about 300 yards as a running back and then beat us in basketball. But he’s a bit of an ass and can come across as a thug. He has a lot of bad things happen to him when he was a senior in HS (his mom died, house burned down). His character is really questionable and he was given a chance in Philly in which he didn’t succeed. He can play CB or Saftey and can return kicks. I’m sure some Tech fans will come on here and talk about how great he is, but he is what he is and he’s a fill in right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s playing for the UFL Virginia Destroyers next year, I mean there has to be a reason why no one has signed him for 11 weeks?

Hopefully he’ll prove me wrong though and can contribute at safety.

by Parks Smith on Nov 23, 2010 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

I think the main reason he hasn’t signed with anyone is like he said in the article bc he is not practice squad eligible. Decent player but dont think he is what is going to make the redskins superbowl bound.

All last season, I had “”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO43p2Wqc08" target="new">Macho Man" cued up in my stereo waiting to go for whenever Macho made a play. I never got to play it.

Oops, let’s try that again.

That aside, I’m among the handful of Eagles fans that liked Macho. It’s not easy playing corner your entire life, and then stepping into the NFL and starting at safety.

a very small handfull

I had sort of a bad experience with Macho at the draft party this past year.

I liked him when he was at tech

but he seemed to slow down his senior year…

Upon regaining consciousness after a play against the Eagles where he laid on the ground for an unknown length of time, Haynesworth allegedly confessed to players and coaches that he had fallen into an abyss of sorrow and regret for taking so much money from the organization. When asked about the incident in the locker room after the game, Haynesworth said that as soon as he had a day off he was going to take the 100 million that Washington had given him in 1 dollar bills, fill grocery bags with them and dispense them to the public.

I thought Haynesworth could play.

I am glad they at least replaced youth with youth here. It’s better than signing Smooty.

I don't think comments about his attitude are fair

Macho was a playmaker at VT, however a slow combine time made him slide despite a fantastic 4 second shuttle run and a redeeming 4.5 40 yard dash at his pro day.

Entering TC in 2009 the Eagles had their first season without Brian Dawkins and it was expected that Quintin Demps or FA Sean Jones would take the starting job. However neither took the opportunity and Macho despite adjusting from CB to FS won the starting job.

He was okay, not amazing. But then again for years the Eagles had expected more production out of that position due to Dawkins. The Eagles chopped and changed their safeties. They subsequently drafted Nate Allen in the 2nd this year (a 3 year starter at FS), cut Macho because he didn’t make the adjustment back to CB and the rest is history.

As a previous poster said, he isn’t Practice Squad eligible which meant that some teams wouldn’t touch him. However he is a good prospect who fits better as a Free Safety or slot corner. He is physical, a good tackler, has ball skills and can jam receivers at the line well.

I hope he is here for a while.

by Jason Paris on Nov 23, 2010 4:44 PM EST reply actions

My point is that his work ethic must be pretty good for him to have gotten the starting FS gig.

His play, about what you would expect from a rookie making a tough transition to a new position.

by Jason Paris on Nov 23, 2010 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

I can't claim to have personal knowledge like you

But I’ve just relayed what I know from sources. NFL teams have players they want to get the job. You don’t draft a FS like Nate Allen only to sit him. Cutting Sheldon Brown left an opening at CB. You can’t force a square peg in a round hole. He isn’t fast enough to play outside, but perhaps the slot in or dime.

He’s here as a safety, which is his better position. Now he didn’t make many plays, but the transition to a new position, as well as the leap from college to NFL had something to do with that.

I’m not promoting him as an all-star. But an astute player hiring.

Apparently Marcus Hamilton tried out today also.

I would of rather have had him, but Macho’s youtube videos from the flag football league probably set him over the top.

Well that would explain your Hokie hate..

Macho

Do you think he has the speed to be an NFL corner? I never thought he got a real shot with all of the CB depth at Philly.

He played CB for the whole preseason this year...

Like someone said, it looks like he’s lost a step or two, I don’t know what the deal is.

Didn't Macho take the starting job from Demps last year?

You are both right. Macho won the job, but was later replaced by Demps.

He’s played CB and S his whole career and at least killed time in the UFL this year.

Macho is a play-maker

Hes got great hands, returned punts and played very well on defense for the hokies. Us hokies were scared that he might not return his senior yr and I was surprised he went down the fifth round. I was hoping in the back of my mind that he would end up here after I saw he was cut by the beagles.

by hokie skin on Nov 23, 2010 6:37 PM EST reply actions

Macho was a better RB than CB, Tech made a mistake by not putting him there

They put all their chips on the table for Elan Lewis at RB, and that didn’t work out at all…

by Parks Smith on Nov 23, 2010 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

Let me give you an honest look at Macho

I’m a Tech fan, and he played some great CB for them, but he doesn’t have pro speed at corner and would get beat too often. Speed is still a struggle for him, but he is a semi-physical safety and should be a solid back-up. Being honest, you should not expect him to be a starter or ever get there. His athleticism is his biggest weakness; he isn’t LaRon Landry who can fly around the field. This guy doesn’t have lead shoes, but it is what keeps this college playmaker from being an NFL playmaker.

Very solid backup though and could probably get play time once he gets the system.
