Much Needed Win

With the kind of injuries suffered at almost every position, it was nice to see the will, and fight the Redskins put forth yesterday.

I think where I was most impressed, was at the offensive line. With the inconsistent play coming in to the game, an O-line shuffle isn't exactly something that boosts your confidence. But I must say, Heyer looked comfortable at RG. Was it just me? Especially on the running plays, Heyer was just manhandling his opponent. And no one likes to  get manhandled.

And the Titan's D-line isn't a bunch of chumps, either. They are a very athletic, strong bunch of guys. Our line just seemed to beat them at the point of attack (more so on straight-ahead running plays).

And as far as our defense, it's hard to contain Chris Johnson for very long. But I thought our defense did a good job at controlling the line of scrimmage and moving laterally with the flow of the offense. Reed Doughty still sucks in coverage, but that's nothing new.

The amount of injuries still scare me a bit.

Hoping we can get Torrain back healthy. Even though Williams ran really well, he still doesn't look a 100%. And Portis... well... Portis is a revolving door of injuries. I really think we should bring up Terrance Austin (think we did, just wasn't active). I know there has to be a reason for him to have been on the prac squad under R. Williams and Galloway, but neither of those guys are blowing anyone a way.

All-in-all I think we fought hard and made the most out of what we had. And this league is about W's and L's -- and we came out on the W side!

Portis was playing so well.

Damn field ruined it. 7 leg injuries in the first half. Ridiculous.

field was terrible

It’s like, your cleats can only be so long.

Yeah. It looked horrible. I wonder if anyone thought of or did get longer spikes?

Has there been any explanation for the condition of the field?

In addition to the injuries, both teams were really fighting for their footing. There were several plays where receivers and defenders were slipping and falling when changing direction, yet the weather was sunny. Had there been a monsoon the previous night or something?

was wondering the same

as I said above, players can only wear cleats that are so long. 3 1/4 spikes is I think the max. any longer and removing your foot from the dirt becomes trickier.

I know all of our injuries didn’t come from said field conditions, but slipping at the speed these athletes are moving is just asking for a trip to IR.

for us every win is much needed

we are what our record says we are – mediocre, just like the Titans.

I’m happy about the win but let’s be honest and not build up ridiculous expectations.

I think Redskins fans know this

that’s why I haven’t made an optimistic prediction in years. No one is building up anything. This post is just recognizing the grit our Redskins showed in the face of all of the injuries sustained last Sunday.

But the players also feed off of the fans. And if we [the fans] walk around like we’re losers, than out players aren’t getting the support they need.

Ken is predicting 10-6 for this season

and there has been high expectations on this site for several years. Plus every year the off season focus is based on the idea that we’re only 1 or 2 players away from having a good team when in reality our OL is a shambles due to neglect for a decade.

So no, I can’t agree that Redskins fans know this.

What we say on this site doesn’t determine the performance of the players. They do and the coaches do but we the fans don’t determine the players performance – if we did we would have never had a losing season.

The latest fan poll on one site was 9-7. The Skins would need to win 4 of the next 6 games, yet 5 out of the next 6

seems like a reach. The first Giants game is starting to look like a win possibility since their top receiver will still be out. The Vikings, Bucs, and Jags games also seem winnable.

reasonable

After the Eagles debacle I was thinking we’d be a 6-10 team but after a decent game against a decent opponent I think 7-9 or 8-8 is more like it. With a little luck or if our new OL configuration plays as well as they did this week then I could see 9-7.

not sure why you're debating this

I am a Redskins fan = Knows this
Ken is an extreme optimist — guess what, my name isn’t Ken. Kevin doesn’t think that way, yet he’s a Redskins fan.

Please don’t lump together those whom think that way.
All I am saying is this:
If you’re a Redskins fan, all you need to do is just show your support. You can be as “realistic” as you want to be. Fact is I’m AM a Fan for life.

All I'm saying is

I never said you weren’t a Redkins fan.

I am showing support – showing support doesn’t mean drinking all of the kool aid.

I am and have been since the late 70’s. I’ve seen the good, the great, the bad and the ugly. Right now we’ve escaped bad and ugly (I think, just my personal opinion) but we’re not good yet, we’re mediocre. We have some good core guys but we also have some weak links. We’re rebuilding so it’s to be expected. A team can’t draft only a handful of OL in a decade and expect to be good – it just doesn’t happen. And we have other needs as well, desperate needs like NT (if we ever want to have a decent 3-4 defense), WR, CB and LB.

also

it’s quite fine to be a realist. but when you say, “and there has been high expectations on this site for several years” what the hell are we supposed to have? It’s the home team, a new season, why wouldn’t your expectations be somewhat high? I’m not saying super bowl, but if players went into the season thinking 8-8, then how are they supposed to play as a contender? C’mon, man!

by Broda on Nov 23, 2010 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

I started the season with high expectations

mostly based on the fact that we had a top 10 defense last year and we improved our offense by adding a future HOF QB and some OL help (Williams & Brown). But our top 10 defense is struggling because we don’t have the personnel for the 3-4 scheme Haslett is forcing on the players. Meanwhile the OL help wasn’t enough as teams are consistently collapsing the pocket from the inside PLUS McNabb hasn’t really performed up to his capability yet. My guess is that the OL troubles and the change in offense are impacting McNabb but regardless of the reason, he hasn’t matched his normal performance for the year.

But the players aren’t setting their expectations based on what we post here so what I say really isn’t impacting the team. The coaches build up the players confidence and it’s reinforced by their success on the field, not by some random fan’s posting on a website.

I get it

we’re all frustrated with the way it has been going. any fan doesn’t want to see there team struggle like this. whether it’s injuries, poor play, or bad luck.

Let’s just hope for the best!

totally agree

After the Eagles game I was really in a funk but as many people have been saying, the Eagles would have beat anyone that night with their offense clicking like that.

I think we’ll see a much bigger improvement next year. What I’m looking for this year is to see the team not quit and for the coaches to develop some of our younger guys.

by aFan4Life on Nov 23, 2010 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

you hit the nail on the head

develop the younger guys.
You have to get these younger guys reps. There’s no other way to evaluate talent than game time situations. I understand our coaches want to put the best talent out there they feel will give us the best chance to win. But some players don’t show you what they’re about until they’re under the bright lights.
