Recap: Redskins Defeat Titans in Body Bag Game 2

Wow. I just don't know what to say. Are the Redskins a good team or the Titans that bad? One thing is certain, this team has heart. Many of the Redskins on twitter were very outspoken that they never gave up in the Monday Night Massacre last week, and that same drive showed today. The 40 minutes in time possession assures you that you'll always be in the game. 50% 3rd down conversion is another huge stat. I couldn't have been the only one yelling in Seinfeld Kramer voice "Russssstttyyy!" every time the Titans Offense took the field. Was I the only one surprised that the Titans fans were cheering when Vince Young went out of the game?

The injuries: Portis, Rabach, Dockery, Anderson Russell, Kedric Golston, Lorenzo Alexander, and Chad Simpson. In case you were wondering, Logan Paulsen was next to come in at OL. The Titans DLine is ranked in the top 5 in sacks coming into this week, yet the make shift OLine looked pretty solid. Heyer at Right Guard made some great plays.

I'll put it this way

the Redskins played like a good team today and the Titans played like a bad one. it’s that simple. you guys definitely outplayed the Titans today, I’m not saying that at all, but I don’t think (or maybe I just don’t want to think…?) that the Titians are this bad. I don’t know about you, but I see two very similar teams in Washington and Tennessee; non-playoff teams that can be a bitch to play if you catch them on a good day.
that being said, congrats on the win and good luck with the rest of the year.

Thanks daniel.

Looks like you were right about the Redskins last week and not this week!

Where are my shoelaces?

by DCO'sfan on Nov 21, 2010 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

We definitely deserved to win this game yesterday.

We totally dominated the time of possession and the amount of first downs. We can also thank you guys for self destructing on that game winning drive.

I still think the Titans are a very good football team. It’s just the way the league is this year, it changes every week. 3 weeks ago the Titans looked like AFC champions… they looked amazing. Look how 3 weeks has changed everything. Not to mention now a feud between Jeff Fisher and Vince Young. Keep your head up, you got a good team and it’d get better.

by rachel216 on Nov 22, 2010 9:58 AM EST up reply actions

Getting Collins back will help them

He’s a journeyman, but a pro. And with Chris Johnson all the Titans need on offense is a decent passer who can run the offense. CJ scared the heck out of me, damn near winning the game on his own late, and it’s not like the Redskins weren’t completely keying on him. ANY kind of balance there makes the Titans very tough to defend.

Gano has a leg

Most of his kickoffs are deep into the endzone and he hit the OT kick. I don’t know what happened on the 47 yarder he hit short, but he usually doesn’t have a problem with the distance on his FGs. Even the 51 yarder he missed had plenty of distance but was just off to the left. I don’t think distance is his problem, but I do think there is room for improvement with gano.

by Kurtstack on Nov 21, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

I honestly don’t think distance is the problem either, but he just hasn’t impressed me. The field did suck also. But my butt cheeks tighten up every time he has to kick beyond 30 yards. I just want a kicker like Rob Bironas or someone reliable, BAD.

by Parks Smith on Nov 21, 2010 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

I hear ya

I generally hate all kickers because of the stress they cause, but yeah, it would be nice to have somebody close to automatic inside 45 yards.

by Kurtstack on Nov 21, 2010 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

I mean I don't know about Gano, he's young so maybe he'll get better

But I’m just watching football now and seeing other guys around the NFL kicking 45 yarders with authority.

by Parks Smith on Nov 21, 2010 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

Of course, his misses today were from 47 and 51 yards

Not exactly gimmes. And the OT winner was NAILED – would have been good from another 10 yards out (hit the net more still more than halfway up the goalposts).

Agreed that Gano hasn’t been a pro bowler, but he hasn’t been terrible either.

by d_c_guy on Nov 21, 2010 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

He's 18/22 inside 50 yards - 81.8%

Two of his four misses were from 47 and 48 yards; if you run the numbers you’ll discover that NFL kickers make just over 50% of those kicks, and he’s made at least as many as he’s missed from that distance. Of his other two misses, one was blocked.

That’s how. “Not top 10” =/= terrible.

I’m not saying he’s a top 10 kicker, but it’s been a long time since we’ve had even a mediocre kicker, much less one that was as good as Gano is on kickoffs. For once in our Redskins’ fandom can we let a talented young player develop and learn his trade? Instead of running him off and spending 10 years watching him kick effectively somewhere else (David Akers).

by d_c_guy on Nov 22, 2010 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

I understand your criticism but I think it’s over the top. In that one long kick you can see the wind killed it at the end. When the Redskins lost the OT toss, we chose to go the other direction. In that 40+ yarder that would have been good from 65.

But hey, go ahead and be the Snyder and fire him so we can go another 5 years looking for a kicker.

Hogs Haven. On Twitter. And Facebook.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Nov 22, 2010 9:53 AM EST up reply actions

I WANT A KICKER THAT CAN MAKE A 50 YARD KICK

Games come down to this and we’re not executing. He has been lucky to be getting as many second chances during games as he has.

I’m not saying he’s a top 10 kicker, but it’s been a long time since we’ve had even a mediocre kicker,

Really?

John Hall: 88%, 82%
Suisham: 85%, 82%, and then 72%

I’m all for developing young talent, but sooner or later this guy continually missing 50+ yard field goals is going to bite us in the ass, o wait it did… Houston game and the Colts game!

by Parks Smith on Nov 22, 2010 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

Suisham was good for every kick EXCEPT the ones that counted

And added to his luster by being lousy on kickoffs. For his career (so far) Suisham is 3-9 on 50+ kicks, making two from exactly 50 and one from 52 yards.

John Hall had a great season in 2005, which he then capped by missing a crucial short kick against the Seahawks in the playoffs. And even counting his one good season, Hall was 4-9 from 50+ with the Redskins, and his longest made FG in his last three seasons with the Redskins was 46 yards.

Gano has only tried three 50+ yard kicks in his career, and you’re ready to fire him? Dude.

by d_c_guy on Nov 22, 2010 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

I hope I'm wrong about Gano...

<blockquote>Suisham Gano was good for every kick EXCEPT the ones that counted

He doesn’t kick 50+ yarders b/c Shanahan has zero faith in him. He’d rather Hunter Smith pin the other teams offense back within the 20.

I like Gano, I hope he gets better. But I’d give my left nut right now for a guy like Bironas, Bryant, etc.

by Parks Smith on Nov 22, 2010 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

Amen.

He’s a young kicker who will do nothing but grow in ability and confidence. Spend the time and effort in the remaining season and offseason in helping him learn and get better, and we’ll have the first solid, long-time kicker since Lohmiller.

by tuckwell on Nov 22, 2010 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

"We'd probably be 7-3 right now with a top..."

That statement could be completed with just about any position on the field. All of the top ten at any position are taken, you need to win with who is available.

I mean they've been saying that every where but Bironas wasn't having trouble

Look at his stats he’s one of the Top 5 worst kickers in the league. I know you love kickers Ken, but come on dude.

by Parks Smith on Nov 21, 2010 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

The wind seemed to pick up during the game

and Bironas was kicking the other way. I’m not saying that was definitely Gano’s issue but on watching a replay of it, it kinda looks like that’s what happened.

by JLynnDC on Nov 21, 2010 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

I thought the miss in the 4th

looked like it got caught up in the wind. It looked perfect and then just flat out died. I also noticed after the OT coin toss that the Skins emphatically chose to go the other way.

If you were a hotdog would you eat yourself? I know I would.

The skins captains cared more about direction than they did who won the toss. Almost before the coin hit the ground they were pointing.

I think since the second FGA went wide, he took a lot off the 48 yarder. it was dead-on but a tad weak.

he will get better at the FGs, he’s only 23.

and it is such a relief to have a kickoff guy put it in the end zone more often than not. we’ve been kicking ass on field position this year because of him (and our coverage team, which has been outstanding).

Offensive Line

I don’t know what happened today, but the offensive line looked terrific. Rabach, Dockery, and Hicks were all out of the game, and the unit played about as good as I’ve seen all year giving mcnabb time and creating running room for our RBs. Montgomery deserves props for stepping in at center for Rabach and doing a very admirable job. Heyer had some tremendous pancakes at the RG position and creating some great running holes. Trent Williams did well at protecting the blind side, and Jamaal brown had a decent day at the right side. This team will go as far as the offensive line allows them. Today the offensive line came through.

by Kurtstack on Nov 21, 2010 5:23 PM EST reply actions

Spot on

Rabach has been a major problem. First play he is driven back straight onto the foot of McNabb again. If the Titans score this game might have been a whole lot different.

I was saying in my column that we should make Kory the center, but Will looked pretty good today. Let’s see what the tape says.

by Jason Paris on Nov 21, 2010 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

It was incredible to see the chemistry of that makeshift line

I really liked the line-up we should keep it. Rabach is horrendous, but it’ll be interesting where we go with this line from now until the end of the season.

by TerpsAllTheWay on Nov 21, 2010 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

Yes they did come through

I wish for one game they would roll with:

LT – Williams
LG – Dockery
C – Lich
RG – Heyer
RT – Williams

They had Lich at Center and Dockery at LG for a little while, but had to move Lich over to LG and bring Montgomery in at C when Dockery went down. Either way, I thought Heyer looked pretty good at RG, even though he is a little tall for a Guard.

I jumped over

onto the Titans blog after the game, and for the most part they seemed pissed that Fisher wouldn’t let Young go back in. Though there were a few who thought Young is soft and took himself out.
But what surprised me was how many of them hate Fisher. They were picking Young’s side over his. They almost had me convinced until I heard about Young’s temper tantrum. He acted like a little girl.
Anyway, I think I got a deal worked out with them. Seems they really like Kyle Shanahan. So we’re gonna send ‘em Kyle, in exchange for Jeff. Personally, I’d take Fisher over EITHER Shanny right now. So, once Fish gets here, him and Shanny can hash out the hierarchy, they can SHIT-can Haslett, and Big Al will start playing his fat butt off for a coach he actually likes.

So, whadaya think guys? Am I a badass GM or what?

maybe, but

I definitely think we’ve been throwing it way too much this year. And we were never really playing “catch up.” I could go with the one RB argument, if it weren’t for last week.
Bottom line – McNabb was not brought here to throw it 50 times. His days of “over throwing” were supposed to be over. He said so in his press conference, when he said we’d be running it a lot more than they did in Philly.

his teams play with a TON of heart. We saw it last week when we were down but still playing hard & really saw it this week when we went into their house & walked out with a pretty good win over a good team. These guys don’t give up, they continue to play hard & maybe some unknowns are stepping up to take over for some ineffective starters.

we're a mediocre team that beat a mediocre team

I like the win but narrowly beating another mediocre team doesn’t make us a good team – it just means we’re slightly better.

Not to be a downer but we keep setting ourselves up for frustration with our unrealistic expectations. We already improved over last year so we’ve moved up from awful to mediocre – pretty good change for 1 year.

This game did remove quite a bit of the stink from last weeks game.

Nice job representing us!

I saw lots of other Skins fans in the stands… maybe I saw you?! haha who knows?

+1 for the Seinfeld reference

(Though I will say that Rusty played reasonably well, considering he’s an undrafted rookie making his first start)

Unfortunately I couldn’t watch it (ugh)—but it’s just as well! A WINNNNNNNNN

Question: Woody, what happened to the ball movement? Answer: I think our defense was pretty solid tonight. We held them to under 200 points so we did our job on that end.

Rusty was god awful

His whole plan was throw it to Moss…who was the definition of half-assing.

Hogs Haven. On Twitter. And Facebook.

To be fair, the 50 yarder was a very pretty pass

It would have been nice if Moore had actually wrapped up the receiver instead of pushing him downfield for another 20 yards, but that one pass was very nice.

All of the rest? Not so much. And to top it all off he looked like he should be in high school or something.

Most of the usual indicators did not result in much scoring differential - 19 to16.

Number of plays, time of possessions, and third down conversions were way in the Skins favor. The punt return for a TD
by the Titans was a lot to overcome. This is also the reason Banks can be a game changer in the future.
