Washington Redskins Week 5 - Game Ball
Who do you think deserves the game ball this week?
- Laron Landry jumps off the stat sheet with 13 tackles (10 solo), 1 INT, 1 pass defended, and the forced fumble.
- Orakpo lived up to his nickname getting 2 sacks, 3 tackles (2 solo), 3 QB hurries, 2 tackles for a loss, and countless holds.
- McNabb: 26-49, 357 yards, 1 TD (the INT was of course the Hail Mary). He got a taste of our 2009 Redskins Oline getting sacked 5 times, so I'm thankful he got through the game with no major injuries.
- Santana Moss: 7 receptions for 118 yards (52 the longest).
- Honorable mention: Hunter Smith: 8 punts with a 44.6 average putting 5 of them inside the 20. He also made a nice play on a bad snap for one of Gano's field goals.

I like the honorable mention
I knew he would be a positive contributor and good holder, I didn’t expect his skills to be showcased his first game with correcting that one field goal hold in the nick of time.
I'm sure he had a chip on his shoulder

I hope he keeps it up
Our punting is perennially terrible, which is unfortunate because we have always done so much of it. You’d think that it’d have been made a priority at some point since Turk left.
I still can't believe that Matt Turk is still punting
Why the hell did we ever let him go?

Remember his brother was the long snapper that messed up and got cut. Matt did not like it. Also Matt sprained his
hand playing basketball during the season.

Yes I remember-
I was listening to that playoff game while in the car taking my wife to dinner, I damn near drove into the ditch.
If memory serves we lost to the Buccaneers, and that was a failed game-winning kick, right?

Tough vote
But I had to go with Landry. He is just beasting out in this new 3-4.
I totally agree on the worst call of the game. Watching Trent writhe around in what looked like extreme agony was tough to watch. TW said after the game it was more out of fear than anything and when he stood up, it wasn’t that bad.
Except,
McNabb doesn’t have the arm to get it there." Which of course he didn’t…Not only did he have the arm, but he managed to throw past all of our receivers near the end zone.
Trust in the Shana-Plan.
I hated watching us line up for that play at the end of the half
I could just see the universe balancing itself after the DHall touchdown week 1.
A-%$#@-men
I could not believe they ran that play. I told my buddy “they have got to be &^$*^#n kidding”. Did we learn nothing from week 1? Almost returned for a TD the other way, our stud LT seemingly getting hurt again. As if watching a Redskins game isn’t hard enough on our hearts without these kind of Shanahanigans.
But I would have to submit, that one of the best plays of the game was Shanny NOT icing the kicker when we all know they were expecting it. That Mike sure is a sly dog.
please do not give the “3-4” any credit for Landry’s beast-mode

I voted Landry
I don’t think anybody else was even close.
This was not a very good game for McNabb, other than a couple of deep balls he was really off.
I think that if Jim Hazlett learns to use Orakpo as effectively as he has Landry, the defense would be even scarier.

I think that if the refs call a couple of those holds early...
so people would actually have to try to BLOCK him our defense would much scarier.
Yes, I'm kind of surprised at that...
You would think that a Pro Bowler would get the benefit of the doubt-and there really wasn’t much doubt on some of those plays.

agreed
Landry is setting a great agressive tone for the defense and is playing great. I’m glad somebody finally figured out how to use him. One year ago he was in the dog house…
McNabb looked awful the first 2 series which is why we got the ball on their 20 and ended up with zero points from it. That’s ridiculous.
Dog house?
I don’t think many people had Landry in the dog house – yeah, he bit on double moves badly and repeatedly, but everyone other than the coaching staff knew he was playing out of position. He was put in a position to fail, not win.
I think that if Jim Hazlett learns to use Orakpo as effectively as he has Landry, the defense would be even scarier.
Man, I’ve been thinking the same thing the past couple of weeks. But the SackPo is doing alright considering he is being held almost every play.
The Once and Future King
yes he is being held a lot
and I think that eventually he’s going to get those calls – you know how it works in pro sports – the bigger the name, the more calls they get for them and fewer against them.
Anthony Armstrong doesnt even deserve mentioning?
He only had 3 catches but if he doesnt pull down that TD catch i dont think we win that game. And he kept that drive going on that tipped pass he pulled down for a first down. And lastly the pass interference penalty he drew on Woodson was huge…

Arm Strong definitely stepped up this game, agree
And if he plays like that again, I think he will solidify himself as the number two receiver. I don’t have a problem with having the Smurfs 2.0, except for the fact that McNabb has always had accuracy problems. It would be nice to have an Art Monk 2.0 at wide receiver, but we haven’t found him yet.

The Hail Mary fiasco was not at at halftime -- it was at the end of regulation...
It just felt like halftime because we were heading into overtime.
Packers had the ball going into halftime just after we scored our first points (fg).
My comment wasn't in reference to your comments...
It was to the last paragraph of the original post/article.
My worst call of the game was the Hail Mary at half-time. As we were lining up for it I said to Ken, “Why are we doing this? McNabb doesn’t have the arm to get it there.” Which of course he didn’t and the INT nearly turned into a TD and Trent Williams got hurt in the tackle as well. Disaster.
Congrats on the win guys. Still hoping you can win the division.
Looking forward to our game on Sunday night.

Hail Mary: not a horrible call
It was a throw that had, let’s say, had as good a chance of being caught by a Redskin as being caught by a Packer, and a better chance of dropping.
-If we catch it and make to the endzone, 3 yds away, game over we win
-if they catch it, as they did, the likelihood of the guy catching it running the entire field which is covered with Redskins, as he did not, is very, very low. He didn’t “almost” score a touchdown. He caught a ball on the 3 and ran 64 yards to the 33. It may have looked like a lot of running, but he landed barely within FG range with no time left.
In other words, what was more likely in all of the caught ball scenarios—they score a touchdown or we do? I’d put their odds pretty damn low—they have to cover the entire field on one run. On a play like this, you anticipate an INT and some guys hang back. I’d put our odds at excellent—we had to cover 3 yards.
In the end, it sucks we lost Trent, but you can’t predict injuries, and if you tell me there is a decent shot at winning the game on one play and an extremely outside shot of losing it on the same play…well, that sounds like slightly better odds than there are on any given snap.
This isn’t like the DHall INT vs. Dallas. Romo threw the ball, what, 10 yards? McNabb launched this one deep enough that only a complete meltdown on our end would have surrendered a GB TD. And if you allow a guy to take a pick and return it for 97 yds, you deserve to lose.
We didn’t, and we won—not on that play, but we could’ve.
Feel free to hate on this opinion, but I am in favor of playing football to win, and that takes ballsy, but well-informed, calls.
Rational vs. irrational...
The rational side of me totally agrees with you, Timmy. The irrational side of me (probably like Carver) has grown ever stronger though w/regard to the Redskins and the poor luck we’ve had with game endings over the years.
So basically, if I’m the coach for any other team, then I launch the Hail Mary, but otherwise, I take my 50/50 chances in OT (we’re actually 6-3 in the past decade – one area that we have not been statistically thrown under the bus).
Honarable mention for hardest hit goes to Mike Sellers on special teams. I jumped out of my seat on that one!

I'd just like to add some honorable mentions..
Props to Armstrong for showing why he is still with the team. His TD catch was a huge momentum change.
Props to Gano for hanging in there and not only tying the game up, but winning it for us in OT. He really bailed out a struggling offense that still sputters in the red zone.
Another honorable mention
I want to add Banks to the list. He’s giving the offense an awesome present every time he touches the ball: an opportunity for fantastic field position.
Orakpo
I think they didn’t call half of the holding penalties that he caused. I thought the refs did a poor job of calling those in this game. It all depends on the umpire, I guess.
Interesting stats
410 Yards Allowed per game ( 32nd in NFL)
YET 18.4 Points allowed per game (9th in NFL)
So this is bend but dont break huh?
Offense: Passing Yards Per game 248.6 (7th in NFL)
Also worth mentioning
We are averaging 17.8 points a game(ugh that dreaded number) and our opponents are averaging 18.4 points. Yet we have a positive record.

Landry
seemed like he was everywhere and making big plays.
McNabb looked awful 1/2 the game and was often wildly inaccurate. I’m not a Jets fan so I only watched the 1st half of last nights game but Sanchez was consistently more accurate than what I’ve seen from McNabb. And that’s not just the Redskins McNabb, it’s his entire career. I used to love how the threw 1/2 the balls way over the receivers head, now I don’t like it at all!
Game ball
I’d like to thank the Virginia Lottery and Redskins for literally giving me a game used ball and a DHall Jersey for picking Landry player of the game.
