Redskins Lose to Chargers; Win Better 2010 Draft Pick

The Redskins end their season just like it started...a loss on the road. I really don't know what to make of this Redskins team. With their jobs on the line, they lay another egg...this time against the 3rd stringers for the Chargers. As for the good news, based on a coin flip, the Redskins will have the 4th/5th draft pick in 2010, so we got that going for us...which is nice. Does anyone think the Redskins will win the coin toss? Not me. Right now it stands:

  1. St. Louis Rams
  2. Detroit Lions
  3. Tampa Bay Bucs
  4. Washington Redskins/Chiefs
  5. KC Chiefs/Redskins

You'd think the Redskins would win since the Chiefs beat the Redskins this year, but no such luck.

As for the current roster, it's hard for me to say what players should stay or go from the previous three weeks. Based solely on the ridiculousness of their contracts, Randle El and Portis should be cut. Comcast Post Game Live brought up a great stat: Only 2 of the current 6 Pro Bowl quarterbacks are top 10 draft picks (Philip Rivers and Peyton Manning). Most of the others are 2nd round picks. It's crystal clear the Redskins must go OL with their first pick.

The people over at ExtremeSkins say that the reports of a coin flip are wrong and that it’s based on strength of schedule… and the Skins have the 4th pick.

Aaron Rodgers was a 1st rounder, so it’s really half of the Pro Bowl QBs.

by superjuan on Jan 3, 2010 9:10 PM EST reply actions

How we use that pick

will be the first big test of the Bruce Allen. Picking a QB will mean nothing has changed. A tackle will be a sign from the heavens that we may not have to wait until Snyder is dead for the team to be competitive again.

by SkinsOsTerps on Jan 3, 2010 9:22 PM EST reply actions

Or we could just go QB then OT OT and be a good team.

by gaudiomatt on Jan 3, 2010 10:17 PM EST reply actions

Not true.

History shows us that career ( pro bowl caliber ) tackles are first round picks, not third round picks.

by williamhudsonlink on Jan 4, 2010 8:22 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, it’s got nothing to do with coins or luck. The fact that we played a super super crappy schedule is enough to get the higher pick.

the rule is qb

the standard rule in the nfl per nfl network and everybody is you dont pass on a franchise qb——so if clausson or bradford and by the way we could use a more acccurare passer which bradford is rates aut as such then that is the right pick—-then the rest of the draft o line

by garyt8 on Jan 3, 2010 10:30 PM EST reply actions

I'd agree if

Okung was gone and we couldn’t trade down to the mid first draft an OL and pick up another draft pick. Otherwise this team is too far from competing to consider a “franchise” quarterback, especially when the options are a guy who hasn’t won and a guy who had season ending shoulder surgery. I don’t think any of these QBs are can’t miss guys, so build the team and wait until he could be succesful. Not that I wanted us to draft Sanchez, but any success he has had this year is due to his OL especially with Ferguson on the blind side. No point in getting the QB before he can be protected.

by jsinger14 on Jan 3, 2010 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

Who says

that is the standard rule? The NFL network? Screw them. Who says Clausson or Bradford will be franchise qb’s ? See Joey Harrington. See Heath Shuler.

The rule goes like this. Build great offensive and defensive lines… the rest is gravy. Do any of you remember the ‘Hogs’ ? Dave Butz , Dexter Manley, and Charles Mann? There is a reason we won 3 Super Bowls. It sure as hell wasn’t Doug Williams, Timmy Smith, or Brad Edwards. It was because our Offensive line opened holes big enough for a six wheeler to drive through… and because the defensive line shut down the run for a decade.

If you are too young to remember, go watch some old VHS tapes your father has in a box somewhere of the old Skins.

by williamhudsonlink on Jan 4, 2010 8:26 AM EST up reply actions

smartest move

If the franchise really wants to rebuild they will trade down and add two excellent offensive lineman. The only player worth taking for the skins over an offensive lineman at the fourth or fifth pick would be Berry. Berry could be a legitimate replacement for the LEGENDARY Sean Taylor and this would allow Landry to move to a more natural position. If they can’t get Berry they should seriously consider moving down and adding depth to a position of great need the offensive line. El “Garbago” (Randle El) needs to be cut immediately and if Mike Shanahan is brought in Portis will certainly exit stage left. Both players have seen better days and do nothing next year to help the franchise!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Pilgrim34 on Jan 3, 2010 10:46 PM EST reply actions

Sounds like Berry is good, but...

I would have zero beef in taking Suh if he somehow fell to us. That guy is a man-beast.

jason campbell

i think jason could b good i dont think we should give a rookie 50 million dollars we should keep jason and get him some protection so he can prove hes not a bad QB he finally got some tall WR i think they need OL and a RB i think clinton portis is done.

Okung, Berry or trade down.

by lynxtheone on Jan 3, 2010 10:59 PM EST reply actions

Only a few choices at 4th pick

If the Rams take Suh, there is no question in my mind that Clausen is on the board. If I were the Rams, I’d take the franchise QB, and if I were the Redskins, I’d take Clausen as the franchise QB. Bradford is not a franchise QB, and he’s not worth taking up there. Clausen is well underrated while Bradford is way overrated especially coming off of a major injury. In either case, teams will want to trade up for him, and I’d say you want to bite on that.

Eric Berry is another amazing talent, and it’s hard to pass up on someone like him when we’re so desperately lacking at FS. The problem is, he’s an SS, which we don’t need on this team, and ultimately there could be 1 or 2 teams dying to trade up for him.

Russell Okung will be gone at that pick, no question, as will Gerald McCoy and Suh, and if Okung somehow is there you have to snatch him just as you must snatch Suh if somehow he’s there.

I think you trade down with a team like the Bills, Raiders, 49ers (2 first-rounders this year), or Dolphins for more picks. All 4 are looking for a QB like Jimmy Clausen to fill a serious hole in their teams (49ers maybe not as much and likewise with the Bills, but with the Bills it’s a new regime and they will need a QB badly). Bruce Campbell, Anthony Davis, Bryan Bulaga, and Mike Iupati are a bit early to pick here, despite all looking to be very solid OL prospects in their own right. If you can make a trade with the 49ers to let them take Clausen and take their two 1st-rounders for 2 OLs, you have to do it here, because that is our biggest hole on the team.

Oh, and don’t take Colt McCoy before the 5th or 6th round. That’s his talent level. Take a Tony Pike or even Jonathan Crompton late instead of blowing a 1st or 2nd rounder on a QB.

by BDBrian on Jan 3, 2010 11:05 PM EST reply actions

If the Skins

pick a qb.. I am gonna hang myself. We need OL more than anything. As horrible as Campbell is… and he MOST DEFINETLY SUCKS… our OL is a slightly bigger issue . Let Colt Brennan take a beating for a year.. then draft a qb next year.

by williamhudsonlink on Jan 4, 2010 8:19 AM EST up reply actions

My question is?????

What ever happened to Colt Brennan being our future? Last year everyone wanted him to be the starting quarterback and everyone has forgotten about him and i still think he could eventually be our starter. what do you guys think??? 40 years Redskins fan born right around the corner from RFK .

Everyone who mentioned "franchise QB"

in the last bunch of comments is completely retarded. No one knows who is a franchise QB from the draft. The bust rate on 1st round QB’s is pretty substantial whereas linemen generally are a safe bet and what we are in greatest need of. “Franchise QB” might be the stupidest thing that gets thrown around in sports forums. People who think this way are as bad as Snyder.

by SkinsOsTerps on Jan 3, 2010 11:22 PM EST reply actions

You have to take the franchise QB if he is there

Shanahan will bring in his son, Kyle, to be offensive coordinator from the Texans. They run a spread formation wide open attack offense. Sam Bradford won a Heisman Trophy running that offense and will surely be their top priority. As I see it, they only need 2 lineman, a LT and a RG, we can draft 1 with our 2nd pick, and sign the other thru FA.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 3, 2010 11:23 PM EST reply actions

Name one team that runs the spread offense in the NFL

It does not work, because pass rushers are too strong and fast. You don’t have to take a “franchise QB” because any QB we pick will never be able to be our franchise, cause he won’t live past week 5.

It amazes me how people come out of the woodwork with this garbage. Just think about it. We may only need 2 lineman as every down starters next year to be competitive, though I have no faith in Heyer or Rabach in the future either. We need a strong foundation of young, top shelf talent, and you don’t find that in the later rounds and in FA. So in addition to a LT and a RG, we need a RT and a center, and Oh, we also need a middle linebacker, a running back, another defensive tackle, a safety, and possibly a cornerback. Sounds like picking a QB is the most retarded thing I’ve heard since Vinny said he gave Zorn a playoff roster.

by Boo. on Jan 4, 2010 12:00 AM EST up reply actions

Houston Texans

Texans have an explosive offense. Let’s figure this out, if you get 3 good foundation players per draft, which is not easy to do, it would take 3 years to fill the Redskin needs. By the 3rd year they would need another 6 positions to fill which means another 2 drafts, and so on and on. You can never fill all a teams needs thru the draft. Coaches and GM’ dont last 3-5 years if they dont win now. No coach or gm is interested in building solely thru the draft. You draft for skill and fill needs thru FA. The Redskins are going to run the spread next year, get ready for it.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 4, 2010 12:17 AM EST up reply actions

Yes - IF you KNOW WHO THE FRANCHISE QB IS

Ryan Leaf, anyone? Heath Shuler? Akili Smith? David Carr? The list of purported “franchise” QB’s is not only long, the ratio of hits-to-misses sucks. Build the foundation first, then find the QB.

by d_c_guy on Jan 4, 2010 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with many ppl’s assessments: Suh and Okung are guaranteed to be gone so the Skins should try to trade down. But the problem is that, since the Skins are picking at #4, this scenario guarantees that Clausen or Bradford will be available and that, to me, guarantees that the Skins draft a QB next April.

by superjuan on Jan 3, 2010 11:24 PM EST reply actions

Draft Pick

Hopefully, with some new management, the Skin’s will make some smart decisions. A quarterback is not the answer. The O Line is what is needed. With some free agency and trade down the #1 for a couple later picks, and maybe whatever quarterback is in there will have some protection. They have a good receiving corps but no one to throw the ball. Campbell is not a good QB and never will be, to inconsistent. He folds in crunch time. There are good QB’s out there that can be brought in without a high draft pick. The defense is pretty decent when they are not on the field for the entire game. Build now for the 2011 season and beyond. It does not matter how much money Schneider has, he can’t buy his way into the Superbowl. Hopefully, he has gotten smart and will build a team instead of buying high priced players.

I'd don't claim to know anything about College Football but...

The other offensive lineman I always hear about along Okung is Trent Willams. What do you all think about him?

I’d like to see the skins do the following…

1. Left Tackle
2. Right Tackle (I’d be open to a RB here if they were spectacular)
3. RB
4. Cover Safety
5. QB or other

Re-sign Campbell for 2/3 year deal.

by Kuruption on Jan 3, 2010 11:43 PM EST reply actions

Smartest plan I've heard

I wouldn’t mind Trent Williams if we trade down to get him. No way we should use the number 4 pick when we can gain a extra pick or two and take him later. There might also be a chance that Spiller drops into the 2nd round, although highly unlikely.

This plan is solid though. Jason Campbell on a two year deal sounds just about right.

by Kevin Ewoldt on Jan 4, 2010 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

Trent Williams is probably a middle 1st rd pick

LT is a priority and Okung is the guy to get
I would resign Heyer
A decent back can be had with the 4th rd pick
Cover Safety is a need, there are several available in FA
Need a new QB

Campbell wants at least a 6 yr/50M deal. Skins could franchise him or restrict him to a 1 yr deal. That would be counter productive, 1st you would have a very upset QB, and 2nd, when he leaves after a year you have to bring in a new QB and start from scratch again in a new complex system.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 4, 2010 12:06 AM EST reply actions

Giving the one year deal would work.

If you kept him to a one year deal Campbell may be mad but performance aside, he is very professional and is smart enough to know that he has to play good in a year when he would be going into unrestricted free agency.

You can wait a year to get a new QB (if that does have to happen) if you have a better offensive line.

by chap78 on Jan 4, 2010 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

The only problem with that is...

Next year, we might get a 15th or 20th pick, certainly not a 4th or 5th. We can grab a premier Qb now, and build around him. With a later pick next year, you get Jason Campbell again. Take the stud QB now.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 4, 2010 12:24 AM EST reply actions

No way

Bradford would lose his arm behind our line and Clausen is an accurate passer for sure but again behind our line it would be Campbell all over with checkdown after checkdown.

For me unless Suh or Berry fall in our laps we should take Okung with the 4th pick.

by Scott E on Jan 4, 2010 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

not sure who is actually a stud QB in this draft...

Let’s break them down with just a surface glance, shall we?

Bradford – injury concerns, huge red flags right there. What has been the primary Redskin deficiency this year, healthy offensive linemen. So while Bradford may be the “best” QB in the draft, it’s hard to throw the ball when you are on your back. So we have a good QB who has had two shoulder injuries in the last year and you want to pop a #4 pick on him? Doesn’t appear to be a wise investment in him considering our OL situation situation. For similar results, see Stafford – Detroit.

McCoy – good wheels, arm is a bit spotty, the knock is that he’s not as polished a passer as Bradford is, but he hasn’t been nicked. No one has him rated as a top 5 pick. NO ONE.

Claussen – Was the top QB in HS, went to play with Charlie Weis and the pro offense and a heralded recruiting class. Notre Dame wasn’t even bowl eligible this year. The guy may have the skillset, but he’s coming out early and while the potential may be there, the experience certainly isn’t. Hard to sell me that the guy is a top 5 pick when his best win was against Michigan St.

Tebow – the hybrid, not exactly accurate but he gets the job done. He could be a first rounder or may even be around in the 4th, but he’s aggressive, competent, and competitive but he’s not the 4th pick in the draft.

Not saying that there isn’t quality in the draft at the QB position. I like what I’ve seen from Pike (Cinn) and Canfield (Ore. St.). Others are enamored with Mallett (Ark), others are hopeful that Keenum out of Houston will declare too. Heck I like LeFevour out of C. Mich myself.

I would be more in favor of a QB in round one if we had a 3rd rounder this year, but we don’t, that would leave us to try and get a quality OL at the top of round 2, but I’m not sure that we can rebuild the line through FA without at least two quality big bodies in there via the draft. Remember, Samuals is most likely gone, Thomas could be as well, if Shanahan is the guy getting hired, then we will be converting our OL philosophy to lighter, more nimble linemen to implement the new offensive scheme, I would not wish to stick a rookie back there while the pieces get put into place.

I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

by piratedan7 on Jan 4, 2010 1:07 AM EST reply actions

I am not sold on Bradford either but

Bradford is the guy on top of their draft board, make no mistake about it. Dr. James Andrews performed his shoulder surgery(The best in the world),and he just happens to be the Redskins team physician. They have the inside track on Bradford , his recovery and the outlook for his future. If Andrews clears him, then you know he is sound, and the skins will target him with their pick. The skins should get an extra draft pick when Campbell signs elsewhere. The O-line will be much better next year…guaranteed!

by johnnydee83 on Jan 4, 2010 1:32 AM EST reply actions

If it comes to andrews decision then...

Bradford may drop picking him up in the 2nd or later rounds would be a good pickup.

by dr WNC on Jan 4, 2010 8:08 AM EST up reply actions

but if no one signs campbell which i dought anyone will then u loose the pick ur planning and a rookie that will probably suck with out the line look at sanchez not saying hes real good but they have a great line and he wasnt good campbell wasnt much worse with a bad line imagin what he could do with a good line and a decent RB i think we should keep him and help him out.

I agree completely on cutting Portis and ARE.

I also share the sentiment that we should try to trade down in the draft in order to snag Trent Williams, and the next best OL available. Re-sign Campbell, but not for anymore than 3 years, and we always have Colt to fall back on (although I just don’t see him working out).

I think we need to shore up the OL to effectively see what we can get from Campbell/Colt and Ganther/Betts/Cartwright before we start to address those concerns.

I’d also like to see some additions that would move Landry and Orakpo to their natural positions, but it’s not like we can realistically address all of that in the draft, or without another ill advised Snyder FA signing.

by VB O's Guy on Jan 4, 2010 8:58 AM EST reply actions

THE BEST DRAFT PLAN

Draft FS Eric Berry with our 4th overall pick
-the dude is being heralded as the second coming of ed reed
-played under legendary def coord Monte Kiffin (known for creating the TAMPA 2 defense), so you know he is NFL ready
-FS that can go sideline to sideline and play centerfield like ST21 (RIP) did
-hits as hard as anyone
-actually gets picks and is known for ridiculous run backs (set school and NCAA records in INT return yards)
-allows Landry to move to SS, his natural and most effective position
-completely solidifies our defense outside of moving osackpo to DE permanently, finding a replacement at OLB, and signing a couple more corners to give us depth and replace rogers which we should let go
Draft RB Jahvid Best in the 2nd round
-allows us to get rid of portis, even cartwright or betts if we really want to
-gives us the first home run threat at the position since portis first came here and wasnt all beefed up
Then with every other pick we go OL or CB.
We can address the O Line in free agency and trades as well (how do you think we got dockery and rabach?).

This Year's Draft

Is really weak OL wise. Only guy worth taking with our high pick is Okung and he will probably be gone. In order of who we should take if available: Berry, Okung, Spiller. Smuts my man you can build an OL through free agency how do you think the Eagles and Cowgirls got their OL?

by Area 51 Forever on Jan 5, 2010 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

Plenty of OL come from mid-1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds

People are only calling this a weak OL draft b/c there aren’t a bunch of high profile first round OTs. Some of the best young OTs in the NFL today were late first round picks (Clady, Baker, Otah)

how do you think the Eagles and Cowgirls got their OL?

mainly through the draft:

PHI:
LT-Peters (trade)
LG-Herremans (4th rnd)
C-Cole (UDFA)
RG-Jean-Gilles (4th rnd)
RT-Justice (2nd rnd)

DAL:
LT-Adams (2nd rnd)
LG-Kosier (FA)
C-Gurode (2nd rnd)
RG-Davis (FA)
RT-Free (4th rnd)
