BLACHE RETIRE'S, REDSKINS TO RUN THE 3-4 DEFENSE
Change is something that needs to happen on the redskin’s team as a whole if we are going to return to prominence. That includes the Defense as well. If anything this season has taught me anything, it’s that Greg Blache really is not the type of defensive coordinator that I want calling the plays on my team. With that being said. I'm hoping that Blache retires as soon as the offseason begins with his head held high. I’m not saying that he is a bad coach in general. In fact, I believe he is an excellent positions coach. He just doesn’t do that well on calling plays. He is way too conservative. Some people credit him with consistently having a top 10 defense. However, I have some reserves about giving him credit for that.
1st) The Redskins have drafted 28 players since 2006 (this includes supplemental draft) 17 of those players have been on defense. Obviously Vinny Cerato thought it to be best to draft defense consistently.
2nd) We had a top 10 defense before Blache. He didn’t build this top 10 defense, all he did was keep Greg William’s ship afloat.
3rd) I feel frustrated at times watching the Redskins play Blache’s style of defense. It doesn’t create excitement at all. By excitement I'm talking about turnovers. Everything’s seems so predictable. Our corners play about 7 yards off the ball (sometimes more), and we don't blitz much. It’s my belief the only reason that Greg Blache is able to be effective is because he has such a talented defense to work with. If Blache played this style of defense anywhere else in the NFL, I find it hard to believe that would have a top 10 defense. When 7 of your 11 starters on defense are first round picks I'm inclined to expect them to be more than just a “good defense”.
4th) He doesn’t know how to use his personnel as effectively as he should. Laron Landry is a strong safety all the way. Yet Blache doesn’t seem to recognize that and play to Laron's Strengths. Albert Haynesworth is even complaining that he isn’t being used correctly. He is a monster, just take the chains off him and let him wreak havoc. We have too many weapons, and too many draft picks on defense to just be good. We should be great!
I would be definite supporter of the Redskins switching to the 3-4 defense. This season so far 4 of the top 5 defenses are 3-4 teams. Of the two teams that have made the switch to a 3-4 defense this past season, (Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos) both are now top 5 defenses. I hope I am not being bias by saying this, but I believe the Redskins have better defensive personnel than both of those teams. I would love to see someone come in and bring a creative defensive scheme that uses all the players on this team to the best of their abilities. Mike Pettine would be my top candidate. He was with the Raven’s as their defensive assistant for 7 years. And this season he was hired the defensive coordinator for the Jets. He believes in a player driven defense, which is something that would be a great fit for the Redskin’s defense. Pettine is very knowledgeable and would bring over a Rex Ryan style of Defense. Yes I’ve heard before that the Redskins don't have the personnel to run the 3-4 defense. I find that hard to believe because of the talent level and potential the defense is capable of. It’s a common phrase that states “the hardest thing to find in football is not great players, but great coaches”. I believe it’s time for a change. I have no hard feelings for Blache, I just believe he should either retire or go back to coaching the D-Line. I could only imagine the joys of seeing a Rex Ryan style of defense being played in a Redskins uniform. I only hope I am not alone in this assumption. Please comment and let me know your thoughts on this subject!

redskins vs chargers will not be on Fox in Richmond or the norfolk area
they are running the Dallas vs Phil. game……….Happy Friggin New Year.
We are NOT a 3-4 team
We are SHORT on LBs and people who can cover in space. We are LONG in monster pass rushers. Lets monster pass rush – if you want to do that and call it a 3-4, whatever….but strictly speaking it don’t fly in DC.

i've always been a proponent
of running a 3-4 – while we aren’t deep at the OLB spot – we are looking at
LE: Daniels (although he will be done after this season)
NT: Haynesworth
RE: Carter
2 OLBs: McIntosh & Orakpo
2 ILBs: Fletcher & (Blades) Need another starter and backup here
CBs: Hall & Rogers(need another solid Nickel/starter) smoot=age
FS: (horton?doughty?moore?) while they are productive… maybe Eric Berry-Reshad Jones- could be the answer
SS: Laron Landry
and there you have it
We are already underutilizing AH (and he's pissed)
Why not really underutilize him and further piss him off by moving him to NT? Also, Orakpo has shown that he is not really a Linebacker – but has most of his success with one hand on the ground. We are very close to having a great D just by adding blitz schemes, putting Landry at SS (a little tackling instruction would help) and then – a decent FS and we are there if we play an attacking D instead of bend but don’t break.

ditto
our problems are in the secondary. Why waste money and draft picks to overhaul our D-line again when we have so many problems at O-line and the secondary.

Blanche has to go, stay with a 4-3
Blanche has to go, Shanahan, Allen will bring in their guy. I don’t think our personnel can run a 3-4 effectively. Haynesworth needs another tackle beside him to plug gaps, and be effective at the pass rush, and Carter/Orakpo make a perfect DE combo. Fletcher is strictly a MIKE LB, which he is perfectly suited for, he cannot consistantly drop into coverage, goes against his skill set. Their defense is solid, they need an attacking mentality, and better man coverage. They need an OLB and a DB which they can get in FA, an aggressive scheme and they should be a monster defense.
4-3
Look, 3-4 defenses are really gimmicky. All they do is take advantage of O-Lines who can’t pick up blitzes. Any decent o-line can handle the 3-4. 4-3 is more of a smashmouth football kind of thing, keep what we got. We’ve got a great defense, now once we stop getting burnt on deep passes, we’ll be fine.
The poll
indicates a new defensive coordinator is wanted, but that the 4-3 is preferred.
Not that I am in favor of the 3-4, but Alabama has the best NT in this draft -Terrance Cody. He occupies several offensive linemen like Haynesworth and Suh.
Gruden in Tampa
It doesn’t create excitement at all. By excitement I’m talking about turnovers.
I watched a doco the other night about Tampas Superbowl Team and it had Gruden talking about when he go their challenging the Defence,
They were sort of similar to us now back then (though without the putrid awfulness) as in they were poor offensively but their D kept them in games.
Gruden though said to the D, that “if you are so great where are the turnovers, its not enough to stop teams, a GREAT D HAS TO WIN GAMES,” he then said get me 9 picks and we win the Superbowl…… the last pick in the superbowl was the 9th of the season
interesting I thought
Pommylee
yet another ridiculous 3-4 post
by someone who still doesn’t understand that Haynesworth is not a NT.
Shanahan's likely defensive coordinator picks
Jason La Canfora’s article says that Shanahan’s likely defensive coordinator picks would be Mike Zimmer or Bob Slowik. Slowik work with Shanahan in Denver. Both of these guys are likely to install 3-4 defenses. Haynesworth could play the defensive end position in the 3-4. The Skins still need a run stopper to replace Griffins if they have a 4-3 base defense.
HH’s poll does not mean much when the organization makes the choices.
