Around SBN: VIDEO: The Daily Show Talks Jeremy Lin

Jason Campbell to the Vikings

On my way to work this morning I was listening to Mike and Mike, and they were discussing the future of the Vikings and specifically the QB position since Brett Favre is most likely going to call it quits soon.

Greeny brought up a number of possibilities mainly focusing on the situation regarding the Eagles two QBs: McNabb and Vick.

On Vick, Big Mike was adamant that he could not handle should not be given the reigns of QB for the Vikings because he has no played the QB position for a while including this year where he was just the wildcats guy.

On McNabb, they talked about how expensive he would be to trade for and the fact that  the Eagles have already stated he's their guy.

Now this is where things get interesting and I am kind of paraphrasing here:

Greeny: "....What about Jason Campbell?"

*Literally a ten second pause.*

Big Mike: "...That is very interesting...very interesting"

Greeny: "He was never really given a chance to succeed. Hes young. Hes got a big arm."

Big Mike: "I like him a lot."

Greeny: "Hes someone you can bring in and build around."

Ok. So put it in the books. Im calling it. Jason Campbell is going to the Vikings, and I am not ashamed to say it, I will join the bandwagon.

Plus it makes alot of sense. They run a west coast offense. He will be brought in to throw deep with AP running all day.

Frankly, and I'm a JC fan

I see no reason why the Vikings would give up a 3rd rounder (the absolute minimum it would cost) to trade for Campbell when they ave a guy on their roster with a lot of potential (Jackson) and a guy on their roster with better experience/results (Rosenfels). If they want potential, Jackson is better for them. If they want a bus driver, Rosenfels is better.

I wouldn't say that Sage Rosenfels has a ton of experience

he’s just been to several teams. We all remember where he started out, right?

by CarverM on Jan 26, 2010 9:55 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah I remember

But he did well for the Texans.

by Skinsmaniac on Jan 26, 2010 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

Not better than Jason

and Jason has more experience also.

He can play from the verticle

and the horizontal position. He’s a keeper.

I don"t see why the Vikings wouldn' give us a 1st or 2nd round pick for J.C. he has outplayed their back up QBs

J.C. maybe a failure here, but he has played way better than the other Vikings backup QBs,and if Farve leaves,he will be better than Vikings got what Vikings got right now.

I hope it's not true

because then who would we start? A rookie QB that we picked up with the 4th pick? So we can watch him get obliterated behind out terrible OL? Oh yeah, that sounds like a plan for success.

It makes sense from the Vikings view point as Campbell has more upside than Travaris Jackson or Rosenfels.

on the books

Never going to happen
They traded for Rosenfels last year, Jackson still has a chance: Why would they go outside for a QB
Either Farve for another year, or someone on the team.

100% agree wtth this.

"It was one of those things where everyone in the building was suddenly excited again," Cerrato said. "And all the women in the building were the most excited. They couldn't believe we were getting the guy from "Dancing With the Stars."

by Kevin Ewoldt on Jan 26, 2010 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

that was last year

Rosenfels couldn’t outplay Jackson and neither has played as well as Campbell. Meanwhile the owner still thinks they should be headed to the Super Bowl and all they need is a semi consistent QB.

by aFan4Life on Jan 26, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think it happens either but...

Maybe management feels that Favre is going to retire (it’s always 50/50 with him) and seeing as Favre threw for 33 TDs and only 7 INTs in the regular season and had one of his best statistical years, yet they still couldn’t reach the Super Bowl…

Yes, I know it wasn’t entirely impossible for the Vikings to have reached the Super Bowl over the Saints, but do you honestly think that Tavaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels would have been able to do even half of the things that Favre did for that team? If Favre couldn’t get it done, I highly doubt that Jackson or Rosenfels could.

But like I said, I don’t think the Vikings will make a trade for Campbell, but I’m just saying that management could be thinking this way and it’s not entirely impossible for them to look outside the team for a QB, but again, I don’t think they will.

by bigrm18 on Jan 26, 2010 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

a reasonable view

but I think there might be some desperation on their part too. Quite frankly I wouldn’t be shocked to see Booty starting over Jackson or Rosenfels as they have seen what Jackson & Rosenfels have to offer and it wasn’t much.

by aFan4Life on Jan 26, 2010 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly.

But that’s because they became too reliant on Brett Favre. I can’t blame them—I think the guy is amazing— but something happened to their running game towards the end of this season and it just doesn’t look as dominant as it used to. They need to find that spark again.

by CarverM on Jan 26, 2010 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

and AP needs to solve that fumbling problem, period, no excuses.

by aFan4Life on Jan 27, 2010 8:37 AM EST up reply actions

For a guy that was supposed to go in there

with option 1 being hand-off to AP, Favre completely changed the dynamic of the offense and got them out of a run first mindset. That was a mistake IMO. How ironic the forced pass at the end cost them their season…?

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Jan 27, 2010 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

yeah but that's Favre

anytime you have him in at QB there’s a chance he’s going to try and force a throw that really shouldn’t even be attempted. It’s just part of who he is. When it works he’s a hero and when it doesn’t work he reaps the appropriate consequence.

by aFan4Life on Jan 27, 2010 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

If at first you don't succeed

think about it. Then think about it some more. Let out a little “teaser” and then deny it. Then think some more. OK, now that everyone has made plans and given up in exasperation….take the extra cash.

by Scott E on Jan 27, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

Couldn't have said that...

any better. Brad Childress fell in love with Brett Favre. That was ultimatelt the demise of the Vikings. True, AP has a fumbling problem. But they got away from the run earlier in the season, and it was their downfall.

Teams will definately go after Campbell hard.

Arizona, Buffalo, Carolina, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Oakland, Seattle, Minnesota, St Louis, are all going to be looking for a QB.
Kyle Orton, Jason Campbell and 2- 1st round prospects are all that is out there.
There will be a feeding frenzy for a starting QB this year.
Shanahan has to decide by March what he wants to do with Campbell or a draft pick.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 26, 2010 1:29 PM EST reply actions

It had better be many, many draft picks if

the competition is that strong. But then why would you want to put yourself in the position of any of those teams (except Minn.) by losing JC? What could we possibly accomplish but a 90% chance we downgrade at the QB position and never do any better.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Jan 26, 2010 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

Arizona: Leinart will play
Carolina: Moore will play
Jax: Whats wrong with Gerrard, they will probably draft Tebow to fill the stands
Oakland: Russell will play he’s Al’s boy
Seattle: Whats wrong with Hasslebeck why would they trade for a starting QB?

by Parks Smith on Jan 26, 2010 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

agree

But then it’s simple, QB is not the issue and will or will not fix the problem.
If the Redskins can get a 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 4th for Campbell than the Redskins need to jump on the opportunity, anythng less then the Redskins can resign Campbell to a 1 year contract.
Simple!

by dr WNC on Jan 26, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Moore is iffy

I wouldn’t count on them deciding he’s the solution to their QB problems.

by aFan4Life on Jan 26, 2010 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

Wisenhunt doesn’t like Leinart at all.
Fox has 1 year to win or he’s toast, would you trust your career on Moore?
Gerrard is a back-up at best.
Russell couldn’t start in the UFL.
Carroll wants a brand new start with a younger QB. He has 5 yr contract.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 26, 2010 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

Matt Moore

was 8th in the league in QB rating at 98.5, was 4-1 in his 5 starts this year and had an 8-1 TD/INT ratio. The Panthers weren’t just beating teams (very good ones) at the end of the year, but destroying teams.

At the moment they plan to still bring back Delhomme as well.

Russell does suck but I’m sure Oakland would rather give him another shot and use Gradkowski as their fall back should Jamarcus falter again rather than give up a couple of draft picks for Campbell.

I agree Gerard isn’t much but he’s only 2 years removed from being everyone’s wonder boy and has numbers similar to Jason already.

Hasselbeck will probably be cut by Seattle, which only adds to Jason’s competition, and will most likely be drafting a QB.

by Mr. E on Jan 26, 2010 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

Fox has already said he would like to be a Free Agent coach next year no matter what, he thinks he can get more money some where else.

by Parks Smith on Jan 27, 2010 9:15 AM EST up reply actions

Risky for Fox.

He doesn’t have the resume of a Shanahan, Cowher or Gruden. Most teams want to go younger with their new coaches. Fox would be a heck of a DC if he wanted.

Garrard looks relative good in Pro Football Focus

On the quarterback summary he was ranked 9th. Campbell was ranked 24th. His yardage passing was a little less than Campbells
as was also his percentage of completions. His NFL ranking was 85.4 vs. Campbell’s 87.7.

Yes, but that only works with a sign and Trade

As a RFA, Campbell gets a 1 year deal tied to draft picks.
IF the REDSKINS trade campbel then it can involve other year draft picks, but of course that means that the Redskins have signed campbell and not just tendered an offer.

Anyone who thinks any of this is up to Campbell is in a dream world. The Redskins hold all the card and will play it to their advantage.

by dr WNC on Jan 26, 2010 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

I agree 100%

It would definately be a sign and trade. If they tender him for a year, that’s a dead giveaway that they are looking to make a deal.
They hold the option to match, so they will sign a contract with Campbell based on what the other teams terms are, and try to maximize his return value.
That will benefit Campbell as well as he wants the long term security that the skins might not offer.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 26, 2010 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

If they tender him for a year

that’s a dead giveaway of nothing. Either someone competent is running the show or they got lucky in doing the right thing.

There is absolutely zero reason to give Jason a big, long-term deal this offseason. He still has not shown that he is a long term answer and we also have new management and coaches in place who might not like his game.

Jason has some value to us and would be nice to bring back on a 1 year deal, but if a team is willing to give up a top 10 pick, or a 1st and 3rd for him… best of luck to ya, Jase.

by Mr. E on Jan 26, 2010 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

Keeping JC on a 1 year tender would never work.

Campbell has proven himself in the league as at least the 15-16th best QB.
He will expect a contract accordingly, currently 5-6yr/50-65M.
Shanahan is just starting his tenure here, there is enough tape on Campbell to make a decision, he either is your QB or he isn’t. Shanahan will make a commitment in year 1 as to who that QB will be. The QB is the leader of your offense, he has to have the backing and support of the HC to command the respect of his teammates.
You certainly don’t want the guy who’s leading your franchise to be disgruntled and bitter. And you definately don’t want the guys in that huddle looking at their leader as a scapegoat when times get rough.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 27, 2010 12:46 AM EST up reply actions

yep, that's how RFA works

If Campbell really wants to move his besy hope is that the Redskins won’t make an offer or won’t make too high of an offer. At the same time I think there’s enough interest in Campbell that he won’t be super cheap to keep either.

by aFan4Life on Jan 27, 2010 8:40 AM EST up reply actions

CBA

If the CBA is not renewed he is a restricted free agent.

If Shanahan wants to keep him, either to build around or until he can find his own quarterback, then they will make a high 1-year tender offer. That will make the Vikings pay dearly for his services; as much as a 1st round pick.

If Shanahan wants to trade him, he will make a lower 1-year tender offer and look to the Draft this year for his quarterback of the future. Either way, the Redskins will get something for him if they decide to let him go.

Seriously, who else is going to QB this team other than him? Collins? Brennan? What’s his name? Using the 1st or 2nd pick in the draft to get a QB is a waste. Let Campbell go and it becomes a priority; and we all know the O-LINE needs the most help.

by Skinzfan on Jan 26, 2010 3:13 PM EST reply actions

Jason will receive the highest tender possible.

End of story.

If they want to trade him, they can negotiate a deal that isn’t the required 1st and 3rd round picks. Other than to save about 500K on a starting QB, there is no reason to not give him the highest tender possible.

And yes there aren’t any FA QB’s out there, but once cuts are made there will be a few mediocre stopgap options that could start while our draft pick learns the O. Or we could trade for a QB with more experience and keep our current backups.

by Mr. E on Jan 26, 2010 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

you guys are mad

We play in the NFC east and you guys are playing with the idea of putting a rockie QB out there to face the dogs, Is’nt that what Steve Spurrier did. Give JC a three year deal and then let him loose his job to the new QB. and forget eveything else

by supersixbig on Jan 26, 2010 6:55 PM EST reply actions

Why

Why does everyone think if draft a rookie qb we are going to start him? We probably aren’t going to until the line is fixed and that he is ready. Newsflash we aren’t going to compete next year, too many problems. Its time to look for what is best for the redskins in two or three years,

by Ben N on Jan 27, 2010 1:38 AM EST up reply actions

BTW

The rookie qb may be the best option at qb, but most likely I think we would probably just sign a stopgap qb or keep and start JC again.

by Ben N on Jan 27, 2010 1:40 AM EST up reply actions

Depending on what pick they use on a QB it would be dumb not to start him.

If they draft a QB in a later round then they are usually expected to sit for a little bit. But if a QB is selected with a 1st round draft pick it would be kind of dumb to have him sit. 1st round picks are supposed to be for immediate starters.

by BrandonO on Jan 27, 2010 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

like phillip rivers, aaron rogers, jason campbell, carson palmer? and brees was a 1st pick in the second round, so basically a first rounder too.

by Ben N on Jan 27, 2010 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

i,mm all for it

campbel straight up for phil loadholt hey c,mon we are giving the vikes a franchise qb they lacked since tommy kramer ..

by lohaus#54 on Jan 26, 2010 7:39 PM EST reply actions

In this case

I might actually be somewhat interested in the trade. Loadholt had a very impressive season and is a young quality starter. We could save our 1st rounder for a QB and our 2nd rounder for another tackle.

by Nobetterthenbob on Jan 26, 2010 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

You can't help but like an Olineman with the name Loadholt

But it won’t happen. We’ll keep JC for 3 years while we fix our highest needs and do a thorough search for our QB of the future, unless JC clicks and wins his job for the next 6 years or so. Could happen.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Jan 27, 2010 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

Wooo... Mike and mike are our waterboys.

If you remember the in-season poll, the top three most likely destinations for JC as voted by Hogs Haven were (1) Washington, (2) Carolina, and (3) Minnesota.
