Players Who Could Have Their Breakout Year in 2010

With Mike and Kyle Shanahan running the offense and Jim Haslett running the defense, I believe that many of Redskins players are poised for a breakout year. After reading this post comment on which Redskins player (or players) you think will have a breakout year.

Jason Campbell /QB- I believe it. Behind a better line and a better coach Jason Campbell could very well take the next step as a quarterback. Did you guys watch the game against the Saints? Jason looked great. He has the potential in him.

Note: Shanahan has been known to bring out a quarterbacks potential. Example: Jake Plummer, Jay Cutler

Marko Mitchell /WR- He’s tall and catches nearly everything thrown his way. Mitchell also has good speed. With an offseason to bulk up, this guy could really start to do a lot of good in Shanahan's offense. From what I’ve seen he is already better than Malcolm Kelly. Personally I like the guy. I would like to see Marko Mitchell and Devin Thomas on the outside and Moss in the slot. That could be a hell of a combination if our offensive line issue gets resolved next season.

Devin Thomas /WR- I watched every game this year. Devin Thomas is a good wide receiver. All he has to do is stay healthy. He’s pretty fast, and could very well be our number one target going into next season.

Chad Rinehart /OG- He was starting to play well last year. Unfortunately his season was cut short when he broke his fibula against the Cowgirls. He has the right size to play Shanahan's zone blocking scheme. Now we just have to find out if he has the ability to run it effectively.

Laron Landry /SS- Landry has star potential. He is lightning fast and plays hard. He is so talented it is ridiculous. All the mistakes he has made in the past can be correct.  He just needs to be coached. Bob Slowick will likely be our new secondary coach. He has worked with some great defensive backs in the past. I'm optimistic that he can get Laron Landry playing at a high level. With a coordinator who uses him correctly we could be talking about Landry as being one of the top safeties in the NFL.

Star-divide

Kedric Golston /DT- He has improved every year he’s been on the roster. He may benefit from being in a more aggressive scheme.

Jeremy Jarmon /DE- That 3rd round pick we used on Jarmon seems a lot more pricy when I look at it now. However, If Jarmon can return from the injury he could find himself poised to have a breakout year. It may take him two seasons to really recover from that injury though, so keep that in mind.

Justin Tryon or Kevin Barnes /CB- One of these two guys are in line to have a good year in 2010. If Carlos Rogers is traded, one of these guys could be asked to step in as a starter. I'm not sure who, because that will depend on who has the better training camp.

Brian Orakpo /LB- Yes he just had a great rookie season. I want to see him progress even further into a pass rushing savage that has to be constantly double teamed in order to be slowed down. He already has excellent weight room habits. Hopefully Jim Haslett can help take Orakpo’s abilities to the next level.

                                                                Honorable Mention

Lorenzo Alexander /DT/DE- He showed some real flashes this year. I liked having Alexander on the team and he has shown me that he is a standout player. He also has become one of our better special teams players. He is only 26 so he still has room to grow.

im shocked lorenzo alexander is only 26

I have seen nothing from Landry which leads me to believe he is anything special.

I’d also throw in Rocky Macintosh to make the jump from good player to great player.

Solid group

A solid young group of players who should be “Redskins”, it was not because of Vinny this group came about it was circumstances which just occured…

I love posts like this

Alexander has been a special teams standout, the fact that he’s one of the first guys down the field in some cases is amazing and man that guy can lay down the hammer on those returners. I’m not sure what his size is but I wonder how he’d do in a 3-4 any way he slims down enough to play ILB? seems to me that he’s got the speed and is close to the right size.

Marko… Mitchell, I dunno about early in the season but this guy is gonna start to come around good hands, good speed and physical I can’t wait, I dunno if he will pass MK cause I think he is in for a break out year too, because of injury’s Kelly really only has one season under his belt so I think MM and MK will come around at some point next year.

don't know why people are down on MK

but I think this will be his breakout year. Write it down!

His nuts still hurt though

He’s gonna need a few seasons to rehab from that

In a nuts hell.

I still think it's too early to tell

Most receivers don’t make an impact for the first year or two out of school, typically their 3rd year is their break out year. We saw it at the end of the year with Thomas, he started to make some plays so hopefully he’s gonna be a big time threat for us next season. MK is basically a year behind Thomas but he’s a worker thats how he took the starting role earlier in the season from DT, I’m really hoping he comes up big for us this year.

Overall-Postives outweigh the Negatives

The young players on the roster do have a lot of upsides and the potential is unlimited if…
The Redskins develop “core” Redskins line man to be a solid Anchor.
Reciever-No additions required outside of the Roster
TE-No additions required outside of the Roster
Defensive Line-No additions needed outside signing RFA/FA Redskins
CB-No additions required outside of the Roster signing RFA
Saftey-No Additions required.
Which leaves
Offensive line
Running back and
Quarterback (Keeping Campbell, but who is backup and who is potential 3rd…)
The Draft needs to be all linemen with a RB experiment, this will allow future drafts 2011 and beyond to select the best player at postional needs. Keeping an influx of new solid performers year in and year out… over the entire team.

and FS

but not as a 1st round pick – we’ve fallen for that enough already.

The current roster has 75 men

and a quick scan shows a lot of rookies to 3rd year players. There are quite a few players with 7 or more years in the NFL, but there is a smaller proportion of players between the 3rd to 7th year, i.e., relative young but with good experience. There needs to be a balance of phasing in players over a period of time (less than 10 years).

I don’t know if the 80 man roster is in effect now, but if it is some of the older guys will have to be released before Spring training and maybe before the draft.

80 man roster is in place

However, other than future contracts all current NFL players remain a part of the current team until the start of Free Agency or March 01

We do have a positional need at OLB

if we’re going to stay in a 4-3 and let Orakpo do what he was born to do.

by CarverM on Jan 20, 2010 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

I think Orakpo will likely stay at OLB

But we still have a lack of depth at that position though

If you have to pay 1st Round money

roll the dice… go for the superstar…the guy that will get you on National Tv

Shanahan had the luxury of inheriting Elway..he traded for experience (Plummer)
when the time came …I think he knows what a Big Name Qb means better than anyone

A few more Skins to shine.

Ganther, Horton, Wilson and I still think Heyer can be good when coached up.

Horton is good

he will just get better

by Rekka on Jan 20, 2010 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

Hopefully he becomes

a serviceable RT or atleast a really solid back up, we really need a solid anchor at LT to get this line working well together.

by skinsfan28 on Jan 21, 2010 8:33 AM EST up reply actions

Hopefully he becomes a serviceable RT

We’ve been waiting a while for this, without really seeing anything to suggest that it will ever happen.

by CarverM on Jan 21, 2010 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

what did the legend do?

for anyone else the second time around…love Buges..but come on they beat themselves the same way they did under Spurrier..false starts ..procedures…even under Gibbs they had their issues

by terpsez11 on Feb 14, 2010 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Heyer

will be shown the door. He is a waste of space.

by CJHutch on Jan 21, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

I expect Landry to make more tackles next year - and some really viscious ones.

He’ll be playing closer to the line of scrimmage. It’s a lot easier to aim for bodies and hit them from 4-6 yds away as opposed to 14 -20 yds away.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Jan 20, 2010 11:14 AM EST reply actions

And if we're more aggressive

then we won’t get burnt on double moves because there will be so many blitzers in the QBs face. Kind of how teams neutralized Santana Moss’ double move prowess this season.

by CarverM on Jan 20, 2010 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

And as has been documented and documented

Romo can be a good QB when given time
But if he’s chased he’s reverts to his old losing self

Blitz!

by dr WNC on Jan 20, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

Why do you think

Landry will be back at SS? I’m not saying it won’t happen. And I agree that is the best place for him. (Other than being on another teams roster that sends us a high pick back in return) But with Horton back, and Reed as well, that would make 3 starting-caliber SS’s, and none at FS.
