with the fifth pick

Okung and Berry probably won’t be options. If Okung is there, take him. If Berry or Bradford are there, trade the pick to someone who wants them more than we do.

If the Redskins trade back

If Okung isnt there and the redskins trade back, I would like to see us take CJ Spiller.

by JeanBaptiste on Jan 3, 2010 3:13 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

if Davis and Williams are also off the board

by sofutomygaha on Jan 3, 2010 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

Trent Williams

is only slightly graded less than Okung. This is not enough reason to trade down. Davis is slightly below Williams.

by Jefferson1935 on Jan 3, 2010 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

Okung if he's there

Otherwise, either trade down for more picks and to where you can get an OT prospect at the right spot. I suppose that Bruce Campbell at our pick is an okay value and is a good positional value, but I have no idea.

by BDBrian on Jan 2, 2010 10:28 PM EST reply actions

Berry will not make it past the Lions

or the Chiefs, Okung might fall to the skins unless the Bucs pick him instead of McCoy.

by Grey Suit on Jan 3, 2010 12:03 AM EST reply actions

Lets Be Serious

If Okung is there it will be Dumb for the redskins not to pick him up. Also in the Top 5 Detroit, Kansas City, and Tampa Bay each have their quote “Franchise Quarterback” so they may take a look at Okung. Also I dont see how Kansas City wouldnt take him. he could really bolster their line. Having him and Brandon Albert at the other tackle could make them a much better team. Detroit could certainly use him.

Curious why Bruce Campbell is listed

instead of Davis or Williams. Caampbell is mid-first grade. Davis, Williams and maybe Bulaga would all be rated higher.

Why isnt Spiller listed

Yeah for sure our Biggest need is at tackle. I truly hope the staff adresses that in the draft. However, I wouldnt mind seeing CJ Spiller in a Redskins uniform tearing the Cowboys defense to shreads.

Not gonna happen without

3 top O-line acquisitions, either via the draft or FA. Since no one gives up a good O-lineman in FA, we may have to look for Juniors coming out early that don’t get drafted. Wouldn’t be surprised if there wasn’t a glut of gut on the market, so to speak.

I would really perfer the trade back approach.

A trade-back scenerio is very reaslistic, but as much as I’d love to have Spiller, we have greater needs if we trade back. We can always get a good RB in the 2-3 round. If we trade back, Bruce Campbell or Bulaga could be a target. I would love to move back and still be able to Grab Anthony Davis, but it depends who we trade with, and how much more Davis’ stock rises. Any team moving into the top five would likely have to swap 1st rd picks, and give a 2nd and 3rd, or a third this year, and a first next year.

I would love to have the 3rd this year and the first next year. This would be great for the re-building process.

by Tiller56 on Jan 3, 2010 11:04 AM EST reply actions

The offensive tackle pool for 2011

may be diluted with so many juniors going for the 2010 draft. If the Skins improve to closer to 8-8, they won’t be in as good of a draft position to get the better left tackle.

by Jefferson1935 on Jan 3, 2010 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

Give the "he won't be there" crap a rest.

It’s all based on what you think now, assuming no trades happen, not considering combines or workouts. Nobody knows who “should” be drafted where yet, it’s all speculation.

That is true

None of us actually thought Orakpo would be there at 13.

by VA_Skin on Jan 3, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Just our luck

Every year a “can’t pass up” defensive lineman becomes available when we are really hurting just about EVERYWHERE else.

The old adage still holds true.

That says you draft for skill, sign FA’s on need. The proper way to draft, especially with a premium pick is take the best player available, regardless of position. At this point Suh(DT), Berry(S), Okung(OT), McCoy(DT), and Bradford/Clausen(QB) seem to be the consensus top prospects. Of course that will change between now and April, but the Redskins will rate each of these players and tabulate a score based on skill sets. Most of us skins fans want either a OL or a QB, but the way to win in the NFL is to acguire as many playmakers/gamechangers as possible. If Suh or Berry or McCoy ‘fall’ into our lap, and he is the highest ‘rated’ player on the board, then Washington must pick him. Some teams above us will pick on need so a gamechanger will fall to us. If Berry or McCoy fall to 5 and they are considerably higher rated than Bradford/Clausen and Okung. We as fans have to accept that. Personally I prefer Tebow/Bradford as our top pick, but if we get Okung or another gamechanger, I am perfectly content with that. We need to fill our other holes through Free Agency.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 3, 2010 3:19 PM EST reply actions

Disagree

We don’t need another DT to put all our money into. Suh would be great if we didn’t have Haynesworth unless we decided to move to the 3-4, then we could move him or Haynesworth to DE, keep Orakpo at OLB but that in itself would be another project we’d need to work on. If one of these guys minus Okung are on the board, we’d have to trade back. We’d get some decent picks and there might be a team that give up 3 picks for one of those players.

by Nobetterthenbob on Jan 3, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

On a trade down...

we could include someone like Portis to sweeten the pot. I seem to recall New England having something like 16 draft picks. Was that before last years draft or are they still hording?

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Jan 4, 2010 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

Not sure Suh fits into the Pats scheme...

plus they don’t want to resign Wilfolk to a big deal, why would they want an unproven rookie that will probably be more money? Although I really wish that trade would work out, we could get their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd plus a future pick, then maybe trade up for Spiller? But that would be a ridiculous first day and very very complicated.

by Nobetterthenbob on Jan 4, 2010 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

It's about time we

had a ridiculous first day. I want SI to be giving us an A+ on each of the draft days….somehow.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Jan 4, 2010 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree

Granted, I would much rather have Okung. But a defensive line of Carter, Suh, Haynesworth, and Orakpo would be rather nice, I think. Griffin is should be gone, and neither Golston nor Montgomery will ever be a “dominant” D-tackle. If Suh were there, I’d take him in a heartbeat. Hell, you could probably trade Golston for a later pick/backup lineman.

by CJHutch on Jan 4, 2010 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

Agree to disagree?

^Need a new word

Anyway, I can see why it would be attractive. The front would be much like the giants during their superbowl run. However it really doesn’t address our 3 major concerns which are o-line, RB and safety. If we went after Suh, I’d want a solid cover safety signed in free agency, not another lame backup signing. A legitimate starter. That should be our first look at defense regardless. We can’t use another pick on anything other then the o-line in the 2nd and 4th. RB can be a late pick because, well, we’re gonna have Shannahan.

Now if we plan to trade if Suh drops it would be a little different. We’d first drop back in the 1st round and pick up at least another 2nd rounder. We’d have a lot more options with this method. I know a lot of people would love to see Spiller on the team and there’s a pretty good chance that some decent tackles will be available early in the 2nd round. Not the ideal case but an option. We can go Tackle, Tackle, RB or Tackle, Tackle, QB.

I guess my real point is I like the flexibility the extra pick provides us if we were to trade Suh where we can draft for best available of our needs, where as if we were to draft him, we’d have to stay pretty ridged on what position we have to draft in each round.

by Nobetterthenbob on Jan 4, 2010 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

Like I said

in another spot – we had BETTER not pick a safety #1. I don’t care how good he is, he isn’t good enough. We already wasted one high draft pick on a safety, PLEASE don’t let us do it again. You are NOT going to turn your franchise around with a safety. An O tackle? Yes. A Quarterback/ Yes. A D tackle? Perhaps. But definitely not a safety.

by CJHutch on Jan 4, 2010 7:15 PM EST up reply actions

Possible?

Trade back could work if we got 3 decent picks, unfortunately most teams won’t want to trade up into the 5 spot because of contract cost and loss of draft picks. I would not want to trade down into say the 20th slot and their 2nd rounder plus like a 6th or 7th rounder. I can’t imagine any team giving up next year’s 1st rounder. Exchange 1st rounders plus this year’s 2nd and 3rd, I would do, but not for anything less than that. Playmakers and gamechangers are hard to find, if you can grab one, go for it. Berry is very highly touted, and he would fill a huge void. It is going to be very interesting to watch how this unfolds.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 3, 2010 4:54 PM EST reply actions

I dunno Johhny

seems to me I hear it often enough, depends on who’s trading into the spot. Usually if it’s a contender (playoff team) and they don’t want to give up their 2nd rounder, they’ll pull the trigger for next year’s #1

I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

by piratedan7 on Jan 3, 2010 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

We have the 4th pick in the draft

thanks to KC beating Denver, and our loss to the Chargers today. Top 5 is:

Rams
Lions
Bucs
Skins
Chiefs

If the Rams select a QB, Okunk should be there at 4, as I would believe the Lions would jump on Suh, and the Bucs would nab Berry.

If Rams go with Suh, The lions could take Okung at 2. I would still imagine Berry would go to the Bucs.

by Tiller56 on Jan 3, 2010 7:29 PM EST reply actions

Wow

Yeah, completely agree with you. Rams won’t grab Okung, Lions might grab Berry or Okung, if Suh is taken, and Bucs would probably grab the remaining one, but if Rams go after, probably Bradford, we’d probably get Okung.

by BigOLinemen on Jan 3, 2010 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

We get an impact player

We are guaranteed an impact player who should come in and start immediately. Come on Allen, Shanahan, 2010 season starts now. Build us a championship caliber team.

by johnnydee83 on Jan 3, 2010 8:39 PM EST reply actions

Suh, Okung, Berry. Neither of those three avalible? Trade down.

by lynxtheone on Jan 3, 2010 11:01 PM EST reply actions

Let me say right now

if we draft Berry or Mays I will have no faith whatsoever in the “new regime.” I don’t care how good they are SUPPOSED TO BE. Landry was SUPPOSED TO BE every bit as good. RIght now we are the only team to draft TWO top ten safeties in a decade. PLEASE don’t let us be the only team to draft 3.

has to mean first round

I don’t think either one of them is sliding to the second

I mean first round

but I wouldn’t want one in the 2nd either. Safety isn’t what’s gonna turn this franchise around. I don’t care how good he is.

by CJHutch on Jan 4, 2010 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

I thought the first 10 slots

were reserved for safeties and only receivers can be drafted in the second round. Might be wrong there, but there is evidence of this being true.

Agree CJ

however great Berry could be, our needs are much greater than a safety.
