Washington Redskins Trim Roster to 53- Bridges, Alridge Cut

The following Redskins were cut today as the team made its way down to 53 men:

Robbie Agnone; Anthony Alridge; Jeremy Bridges; Scott Burley; Alex Buzbee; Chase Daniel; Antonio Dixon; Dominique Dorsey; Doug Dutch; Keith Eloi, Cody Glenn, D.J. Hackett, Lendy Holmes; Rob Jackson; Dave Rayner; Rueben Riley; Trent Shelton; J.D. Skolnitsky; Robert Thomas; Eddie Williams; Darrel Young

In the "I was wrong" category: Rob Jackson, Anthony Alridge, Jeremy Bridges, Dave Rayner, Cody Glenn.

Biggest surprise to me: Jeremy Bridges. I thought he had earned a spot on this team a long time ago. I guess Edwin Williams really came on strong.

Let the second guessing begin.

yeah

I don’t understand the Bridges cut. He at least did as well (or not so well) as Williams. Only he’s more versatile. I have a feeling they will be looking at O linemen on the waiver wire.

HAIL MARCUS MASON!!!

Surprised by Bridges also

especially considering they kept Batiste.

Didn't surprise me.

That was my vote for surprise player to make the team. Zorn’s been praising him as a breakout player all offseason.

Waiver wire

Vinnie said otherwise, but you gotta think with some of the players they kept that they are strongly considering a move. Batiste and Westbrook? Maybe they both excelled on specials, but I didn’t see a whole lot of excelling from that unit at all.

Which is very refreshing right?

Granted, there were no real big names cut, but like you said, there were a few examples of spots simply not being handed out.

Very refreshing. A great sign.

‘Big’ name, or draft pick status, saved no one. Nice to know (and great for guys coming into camp, knowing they have a shot at making the team).

6 CBs?!

Is there something they aren’t telling us about Rogers’ injury?

RAK EM UP!

by VA_Skin on Sep 5, 2009 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

it's a

combination of Rogers’ injury and their lack of trust in Barnes.

by CJHutch on Sep 5, 2009 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

but I specifically heard they felt Barnes looked lost in coverage. I agree. He needs time, but he wouldn’t make it on the practice squad

if they didn’t like Tryon, they should have cut him

Cutting Alridge and Dorsey is disappointing

I’m glad we kept Mason, since right now he looks better than Betts. But honestly, it’s hard to really get excited about ANY of our backup RBs that made the roster. None are much of a change of pace from CP’s style. And none are anywhere near CP’s caliber. All they are is relief for CP, which he will desperately need this season. Hopefully they can just help enough to move the chains. And Rock will hopefully continue to secure the ball and make it to the 20-25 yard line on kickoffs. I’m not expecting much else.

Whats up with them cutting Chase Daniel I saw the game he played in and he kicked ass and he looked better than Colt brennan he could barely make a first down with out throwing an interception. I mean come on Chase practically ruled that game

by Chiefsallthetimebaby! on Sep 6, 2009 2:03 AM EDT reply actions

straight from the mouth

of a Missourian. He looked OK, considering he was going against guys standing in the unemployment line with him now. He’ll be signed to the practice squad, but he’ll never start an NFL game.

by CJHutch on Sep 6, 2009 2:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Chase

Chase played against fourth stringers. Same as colt last year. Against jax chase had three straight and outs. There’s a reason no one on the NFL drafted him.

well i still got faith in him oh and damn straight from a missourian LOL its cool guys

Anyone think

we may give Matt Bryant look?

by CJHutch on Sep 6, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions

Or

What about that OT from jaxsonville that got cut because we wouldn’t restructure his contract? Tony Pachos.

I'm worried about the beer supply. After this case, and the other case, there's only one case left- Barney Gumble

I was thinking Brandon Coutu

the dude that got cut out of Seattle. But Matt Bryant would be a great option as well. Both Bryant and Coutu are better options that Suisham…in my unprofessional opinion.

by Sugar on Sep 6, 2009 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I liked him in preseason also

Olindo Mare (the other Seattle kicker) had a slightly stronger leg on kickoffs, but Coutu definitely looks better than Suisham.

what about....

David Buehler…..think he was kicking in Cowboys camp…..he is a rc but a damned good young kicker…I am pretty positive he didn’t bat Nick Folk out!

by shvd98z24 on Sep 6, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Anybody But Suisham.

I would have taken Rayner over him. And good point, actually, excellent point, Matt Bryant is a very competent kicker and worlds above Suisham in terms of ability. Especially for a team that struggles in the red-zone like us, you’d think management/ownership would give a $($_$(#*)%(’ing damn about having a good kicker on board…

+1

It’s rare to see a successful NFL team that doesn’t have a competent, consistent kicker.

Free agent Vets

NFL rules will make most Free agent vets off limits until after the first game.
It’s a business and uness it’s someone who is going to make an immediate impact (starting), teams would be wise to wait to week 2

Signed in week 1 to the 53-man roster, a team must pay the player is full annual salary.
Signed in week 2, teams are responsible week to week, including if an injury occurs.

well based on who was released and our perceived needs

I Like that DiGiogio OLB from the Bills

I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

i like the roster moves...

to keep colt and chase….maximizing the system to keep solid developmental players….
i dont like cerratos stipulation that ARE is a 3rd qb…that is simply assanine…

i like our punter Smith…he will make a big difference this year with field position.

if williams stays off the ham hocks and cheese, we may have a steal there as well.

first time in a decade i have liked our receivers…moss, kelly, mitchell and to a lesser extent thomas then randel el..and cooley and davis coming from the te spot, then you hit them with sellers out of the backfield? ru kidding me? give this some time and get the ball in the air downfield and you are going to se some surprised puppies (sorry eagles fans to pun intended)….

From the redskins insider

Safety Lendy Holmes, defensive end Rob Jackson, wide receiver Trent Shelton, defensive end J.D. Skolnitsky and fullback Eddie Williams have been named to the Redskins’ practice squad.
Antonio Dixon, cut yesterday by the team, has been picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Really we kept a wr on the squad? Where’s the OL depth just in case and 2 DE has me scratching my head.

OL

Depth on the 53 man roster
Complete 1st and 2nd team if I remember correctly

Chase is gone....

Bye Chase

Saints have claimed him, it seems…. now the Redskins will def be looking for a 3rd QB….Garcia (if he’ll accept that role), who else is out there?

by RedskinFan4Life on Sep 6, 2009 7:49 PM EDT reply actions

Andre Woodson is now on the practice squad.

But I don’t understand why people keep dropping Garcia’s name. Looking around the league, plenty of teams only keep two QBs on the active roster. I like that we managed to find room for skill players and developing OL talent.

Anyone else think its strange that teams (like NY and PHI) kept 6+ wide receivers? Is it just that they can’t tell which ones suck the least yet? There are barely enough plays in a game to incorporate a 5th. I assume thats where they get their Special Teamers?

by Boo. on Sep 6, 2009 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I may be slow in thinking this

but does anyone else think the Woodson signing may have a little to do with our week one opponent?

by CJHutch on Sep 7, 2009 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

for sure.

Look at Kevin O’Connell to the Jets. They even gave up a late round pick for that information…

Are you sure?

I thought Garcia was cut because the Raiders just didn’t want him.

by bigrm18 on Sep 7, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I think they

viewed him as a hindrance to Russell’s growth. He knew he would probably be a backup going in, with a slight chance of starting if Russell completely floundered. That didn’t happen, but it seems Russell was still looking over his back.

Also, Garcia doesn’t fit Oakland’s (see Weird Al’s) strong-armed QB mold.

by CJHutch on Sep 7, 2009 7:51 AM EDT up reply actions

It seems that everyone knew Garcia didn’t fit Al Davis’ strong-armed QB fixation besides the Raiders. Davis would rather have a QB with a strong arm than a QB that would possibly get him more wins. Seeing Al Davis makes me feel a lot better about who we have.

by bigrm18 on Sep 7, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Garcia definitely was not playing nice

He agreed to be a reserve when they signed him, but throughout the preseason he was pushing for the starter’s job. I understand there were some players on the roster that were grumbling for him to be the starter as well. They cut him to get out of that situation.
