Jim Zorn Replaced!

Ok, that was just to get your attention.

Star-divide

It's pretty obvious from all the posts that a fair number of people think Zorn should be fired.  So who would replace him?

Don't name  coaches who already have a job because they're not going to quit during the season.

If your replacement coach is known to be a coach who has a history of GM duties (like Shanahan) then explain how that going to work between Snyder, VC, and the new coach.

I haven't liked what I've seen from Zorn but there's no point in firing him unless there's someone better to replace him with.  So who is it?

One better option at this point (mid-season)

would be Mike Shanahan. He’s currently unemployed, runs a WCO, and has a PROVEN winning record to go along with 2 Superbowls. The question is, would he be willing to come to the Washington Redskins mid-season and strictly as a Head Coach? The truth is he’s the only one that can answer that.

That being said, Zorn has had has a golden opportunity to get things together against 3 losing teams in a row. Let’s see if he responds.

Shanahan as a HC only

I think Shanahan would be an improvement as a HC so that would be fine with me. Of course I wouldn’t mind him taking personnel decisions away from VC either because VC has been awful. But was Shanahan good at personnel? I haven’t ever followed the Broncos or Raiders (as I’m also a Chiefs fan) but it seems to me like he wasn’t that good at personnel decisons either.

What happens if we lose to the Bucs? I really, really don’t think it will happen but ….

Losing to the Bucs is out of the question

I can’t even imagine what Fed Ex will be like if we lose to the Bucs. Riot squads and Molotov cocktails come to mind…

From my knowledge Shanahan is very, very good with offensive personnel when it comes to Running backs and linemen for his scheme. He’s always put together good lines and made Portis, Terrell Davis, Mike Anderson, Ruben Droughns, Olandis Gary, Tatum Bell(hop), Peyton Hillis, Ron Dayne, and others look like Walter Peyton at times.

Seems like his QBs have always looked good. Elway is a given but Griese, Cutler, and Plummer all looked pretty good in Denver.

yes but

his defenses were as bad or worse than his offenses.

Maybe they could have Shanahan handle the offensive players and VC handle the defensive players.

Either way it would be an improvement.

He’s an offensive guy, why would he have any hand in the defense?

by pas493 on Sep 30, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

only on personnel

I think he handled all the personnel decisions.

by ZakInOmaha on Sep 30, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

his defensive

personnel decisions were awful. Remember the Brownco’s? That was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen.

As for his other decisions – I agree he would be much better than Cerrato, but that’s not saying much. He was good at plucking talented RB’s fromt he latter rounds, but I think it went to his head (See Maurice Clarrett).

Basically, what I’m saying is that he wouldn’t be my first choice, but I’d take him in a heartbeat over what we have now. But I still don’t see Snyder stripping Cerrato of his duties again.

Now, with that said, I’ve decided that at this point I’d rather ride out the season and go for the better option of getting Russ Grimm in here to change the attitude and culture of this team.

I was trying to find out

if anyone really knew of any coaches that were really available (as in they’d really take the job right now) if Zorn were fired today. From what the professional analysts are saying, all of the proven HC’s will not want the job right away but will hold out for the off season so that they can pick their staff.

Because of that I don’t see firing Zorn as a good idea unless there’s someone already on the coaching staff that can step in and do a better job. That seems unlikely as the Zorn is the OC as well as the HC and Blache looks terrible as the DC. So what we’d get is another position coach making the jump to HC and look where that got us last time.

It is possibl;e though, note that Singletary was promoted up that way and took the risk of just being an interim coach and so far it’s turned out well for him and the 49ers.

What I don’t want to see is JZ fired with nobody competent to take over. So many people on this sight were clamouring for him to be fired immediately without looking at the consequences. It’s ridiculous.

I think Zorn being fired is not going to happen

If the Redskins reach an 8-8 level, with no significant losing streaks of longer than 2 or 3 games then just like the owner is not changing, the head coach is not changing either…IMO

I don’t think so, if we don’t go to the playoffs Zorn is done. Too many big names enticing Snyder this offseason.

Shanny is...

A good fit only in that he can help JC continue to develop and that his O scheme is closer to Zorn’s than some other possible candidates.

I don’t like Shanny as the number one option:

- he can be brittle; not what the team or the HC/GM/Owner interfacing needs
- we really need a tough guy who understands football as played in the NFC East; both for pumping up our current players and molding an O and D in the future.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

Just curious, but how is he “brittle”?

by pas493 on Sep 30, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

have you seen him lately

I swear his eyes are gonna fall out at any minute.

Me

I think i’m qualified because I too have never called a play in the NFL. But seriously I really like the idea of maybe hiring on Holmgren (taking the year off) part time as a consultant to help Zorn thru his learning curve, of course this only works if Zorn is on board…

by skinsfan28 on Sep 30, 2009 10:21 AM EDT reply actions

That would help.

Zorn could sure use some help with game management, that’s for sure.

Maybe Holmgren could help with motivating players too although that was never his strong point IMO (though I don’t know much about Holmgren).

by ZakInOmaha on Sep 30, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Bad move there...

All you would do is have the players do even more second guessing of Zorn and further erode his authority.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

by Scott E on Sep 30, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

not to mention Holmgren is too much of a control freak to NOT want his name on everything. Now, one model that MAY work is making him team president in the Bill Parcells mold. Maybe he sees Parcells getting all the credit in Miami and wants that here. Of course, the PERFECT choice for that role IMO would be Jimmy Johnson. Does ANYONE doubt that we would be dominant again if we had someone GREAT with talent acquisition spending Snyder’s money?

by CJHutch on Sep 30, 2009 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm salivating at the mouth

Just thinking about that possibility, but I also realize that it’s not going to happen unfortunately. Snyder just isn’t smart enough to think outside the box and hire someone like Johnson.

by bigrm18 on Sep 30, 2009 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

what if we

dressed someone up LIKE Snyder, called a press conference, then offered Jimmy Johnson the job ON AIR!!. Once the news circulated, and everybody said what a genius he is for doing this, he would HAVE to go along with it.

So, who do we get to dress up as Snyder? Devito is busy with his FX show.

by CJHutch on Sep 30, 2009 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Just get

Any Jewish male that is under 5’2" and wears glasses. The media will believe anyone and anything.

by bigrm18 on Sep 30, 2009 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

My friend's dad

is seriously Snyder’s twin. Glasses, height, face, MONEY, everything. It’s eerie. And I have another friend whose family knows Danny and gets to sit in his luxury box a lot.

HEY, I go to Jewish Day School. I’m not “one of them” but there happens to be a lot of people who are rich Redskins fans. Maybe I could get their daddies to lobby Snyder.
