I hope we beat Detroit.... but not by more than a TD
Of course I want a 'Skins victory on Sunday.
But I'm actually glad we barely got by the Rams. And I'm hoping we do only slightly better against Detroit.
Why?
Because the alternative would have hamstrung this team.
If the 'Skins had won by three touchdowns this past week, all would be rosy in DC. Headlines would read, SKINS ARE BACK or OFFENSE SHINES—ZORN OFF THE HOT SEAT.
Which would be a mistake.
Two things that are always true in the NFL:
- Preseason doesn't really allow you to truly prepare for regular season games; and
- Non-elite teams that make the playoffs historically do so by getting some momentum going mid-season and then peak in December.
We have been blessed with a soft schedule for the next month. Don't get me wrong, on "any given Sunday" as it is said, any team in the NFL can win, even the Lions; the 'Skins can't cakewalk through this month.
But they can afford to make a few mistakes against the Lions, Bucs, Panthers, and Chiefs. These are four teams that are currently winless, all of them giving up around 30 points per game.
I'm really not worried about our D. They're looking like they'll be top-5 again, and there are no major questions there (although the cornerback situation, as mentioned by KevinE, is cause for concern).
I, like Redskins fans everyhwere, am worried about the offense. When will all these superior parts be assembled and tweaked to make a Ferrari instead of a Ford Pinto?
That's Zorn's task this next month—to develop the offense into a major threat. And this is important—as long as he gets the Ws, I don't care how crappy the team looks. I only care about one thing: that they progress from week to week. That they improve. That they get the kinks out. Say what you want, but in a team with as much offseason BS as the 'Skins have had this year, a team in only its second year with an innovative coach, a team that has to polish up its 2nd-year receivers and find a way to take make its O-Line productive, there will be many kinks to work out.
And it is far, far better that they be worked out now—that Zorn be taking a long look in the mirror, that certain plays be starred as "go-to" plays, and that parts of the playbook get shredded because they are ill-suited to this team—it is far better for all that to happen now than for it to happen in November. Because when we start playing the good teams, we need to have our act together.
This can be a talented team. There is enough on the roster to make it one. But they aren't yet. And I'd rather they discover how to be one and develop an identity slowly over a period of weeks rather than get all fired up because they just beat St. Louis by 30 points. If that had happened, or if they cream the Lions this week, there's a chance that either Zorn, or the players, will get complacent and think it's "fixed". I don't want them to think it's fixed after one game. I want them to stay hungry until they know, they know from the pains of 3 or 4 difficult weeks, that they have truly jelled.
So media, and Danny Boy: STFU. Don't fire coaches, don't offer seven different ways to "fix it"; just get the fuck out of the kitchen. You're the reason Zorn is calling option passes to Portis: because he feels he needs to show you some razzle-dazzle in Week 2 instead of finding out, against an inferior team, how well Kelly can run a fade route.
Here's to four weeks of Redskins victories that I hope will result in them hosting Philadelphia at the end of October with a 5-1 record, but more importantly with a real sense of what they can do.

Great post
Positive way to look at things for a sputtering offense.

That sums up the entire Dan Snyder era

It's all about identity
The team does not have the slightest idea of what its identity is right now. You are exactly right that these next few weeks represent the perfect opportunity to develop one. I do want my team to be exciting to watch, but I don’t need it to be like New Orleans. A solid win in which the skins dominate all 3 phases of the game but don’t blow out the Lions would make me very happy, especially if we start to get an idea of what we can expect week to week. But I would like to finally see a victory of 10 or more points.

IF...
we dominate all phases of the game AND fix our most glaring problem – red zone TD efficiency – we will most certainly win by a wide margin. While this may not do much for developing the team’s identity, it should certainly help their psyche.

totally agree. To go even further with your remarks, I would say that the first and goal offense is the biggest concern. The Skins can’t get stuffed by both the Rams and the Lions inside the five….that would be a signal of bad things to come.

Exactly
Sometimes I think part of the problem is that we brought in a “west coast” system and are trying to force Gibbs smash mouth/long bomb personnel into something they might not be naturally suited for. Doesn’t mean it can’t be done but I think figuring out what this team’s offense is all about is step one.

Nice post
And I agree with your logic for the most part, especially about non-elite teams usually getting hot in December. But, I would rather Zorn figure things out sooner than later.

It's not like...
we need any more drama associated with this franchise.

I like it
so Zorn is putting the players in a position to screw up, so that he can essentially beat their mistakes out of them. I’m OK with that.

THIS IS A BAD THEORY !!!!!
This team only lacks confidence that is all !!!! Their is a lack of it in the coach , qb, receivers, rb, ol, etc !!!! When a team has the right amount of confidence everything else is irrelevent !!! That is as long as the talent is in place.
Can anyone say that we do not have a better than average amount of talent on this team ??? Can anyone say that we do not have more talent than the Indy Colts ?? Look at what the Colts did this past week came from behind to win even after getting beat up the whole game !!! The Colts have something we don’t have confidence in our organization !!! I can not blame the fans because this starts at the top and works it way down to the very bottom!! ( Dan Snyder – practice squad ) How many of you did not think that the Colts had at least a 50% chance of a comeback ??? The Colts organization is a organization full of winners not whinners maybe one day we can become the same !!! This goes for the owner, coaches. players and fans !!!!
WINNERS find a way to win (COLTS) and LOOSERS wil find a way to loose (REDSKINS) ?? Lets change this mindset and become winners !!!!!
LET JASON PASS THE BALL !!!!

bad theory
They colts have manning..very experienced, calls audibles 15 min of play time isn’t going to phase him. Campbell would have a heart attack with only 15 min of playtime

Lions fan/Cowgirl hater frenemy here
I think the Lions eek out a win in a low-scoring old school slugfest. The celebration won’t fully be realized here until 9 months later with an 8% increase in STDs and illegitimate birth rates due to drunk aggresive hot chicks.
A moral dilema- is it wrong to refer to the Dallas Cowgirls as “Jerrys kids”?

I think it is
a SERIOUS insult to the original ‘Jerry’ kids.’

Any team/fan
That doesn’t play/root for the Cowdungs automatically hate that organization and its owner. I think it’s a rule in one of the NFL books somewhere. If they aren’t winning, their fans bandwagon followers will find a new team to jump onto and hate them just as much as everyone else.
I do think it will be a low scoring game, but I see the Redskins doing just enough to win (like we usually do against Detroit).

BAD THEORY ??
The colts have only three playmakers on offense ( Maning, Wayne, Clark } !!! How many do we have ??? Let me count Moss, Cooley, JC, Randle El, Kelly, Thomas, Mitchell, Betts , A Alridge, etc !!!!!!!!!!!!!
It does not matter how much talent or potential talent a team has if the coach does not know how to utilize it properly !!!!! The Colts get the max out of the minimum amount of talent that they have on offense !!! We get the minimum out of all of our talent on offense thanks to poor coaching !!!
LET JASON PASS THE BALL !!!!!

I hope they win by 5
I took the Lions and got 6 points. I hate betting against my team, but emotion can’t get in the way of a good line.
