Am the only one
That thought that the reason the Skins couldn't score was because of the disgustingly bad o-line play? The only name player the rams have in their front seven are Leonard Little(past his prime), Will Witherspoon(again, past his prime), and James Lauranitis(a rookie). Rabach was blown up on multiple occasions.
You should be able to run ball in the redzone against a team like the Rams.I dont blame Zorn for calling runs.
And everyone is very hypocritical when it comes to Zorn. If we had kicked a feild goal at the end I know everyone would have said we should have run a play.
We did not just run run pass like everyone is saying....I dont know what game you people were watching. They put together 4 very long drives against the Rams. They would have had a feild goal [attempt] at the end of the half if Moss didnt fumble. Sellers and Devin dropped touchdown passes.
What can you do as a coach if the players dont execute?
In the end we won the game. Last year they would have finish with a winning record had they beaten the Rams. They would have probably been a little more motivated for the last game of the year against the 49ers had they been in a position to finish 10-6.
I was dissapointed at their ability to capatilize but their defense also didnt do a great job of putting them in good feild position(Although I do think that roughing the passer was BS and they should have gave them that fumble). They did force a turnover that helped win the game but they didnt get anything else besides that.
Malcolm Kelly looks like he will be the best of the bunch they drafted. He has soft hands and makes a good effort to get extra yardage.
Cooley had a big day and even blocked a few people which surprised me more than any of his catches.
Randle El is a different player working from the slot. Liking what im seeing from him. He's finally earning his contract.
Andre Carter also looks like a different player since other teams stopped double him and focusing on Haynesworth and Griffin.
Santana has struggled out of the gate he was shut down by Cory Webster and that fumble could have really cost us.
Rocky McIntosh is very good player. How much better will he get?
Horton is a playmaker and I believe is probowl bound one day. Not this, but maybe one day.
Did LaRon Landry run off the field after the ball was snapped? Was he even on the field to begin with?
Haynesworth is disgusting and so far has shown he is worth the contract. He gives offensive lineman nightmares.
Jason Campbell is looking like a quality QB IMO. The protection was very dissapointing but this game he was VERY decisive in tucking the ball and running or getting rid of it. He did a good job of making plays and protecting the ball at the same time. He also took a few shots downfield although they were way off. By the way, the Giants defense just got a pick six on Tony Romo.
Minus that big run we would have shut out the Rams.<-- not sure where to put that. kind of random.
Last thing-DeAngelo and Carlos have to step up. Break up a damn pass. Just one. Please.
Detroit is up next. I hope the Skins come out unsatisfied with that narrow win and ready to beat the sh*t outta the Lions. Double cover Calvin all day! Also, Derrick Williams, #12 for the Lions out of Penn State, is from Greenbelt, MD, and went to Roosevelt High so good luck to him he probably watched the skins growing up but i hope they knock the sh*t outta everyone else.

The Rams are still and NFL team. Everybody in the NFL has talent and games are about matchups. Steven Jackson put the Rams in a position to score once and the Rams scored, ONCE.

sorry i have thoughts still coming to me.
The longest run of the day by CP was 12 yards…this supports my “oline is disgusting” statement.

everything you say is true except
its the coaches job to run plays which allow the team to win, Zorn is not doing that and that’s why a TD did not occur. The OL is weak but by far the reason the team did not score any touchdowns
Its really come down to play calling and I’m a Zorn backer but he’s overthinking the play calling which tends to make him call a game not to lose instead of playing to win

OK
If Mike Sellers caught that ball, TD. Good playcall. If Devin Thomas caught that ball, good playcall, good play by JC. If Portis threw a better pass and Cooley came down with it, good playcall, genius Zorn.
You cant blame him for two players dropping passes. Again, he cant play the game for the guys.
And stop with saying he is calling plays not to lose.
Who else ran a fake feild goal in week one??? That takes some major balls to call a fake feild goal.
We went for it once TWICE on 4th and 1 when we could have taken and easy FG. HOW IS THAT NOT AGRESSIVE?

Great Points all Around
Outside of the redzone, Zorn called a great game. Long, methodical, controlled drives that were well balanced between run and pass. I wouldn’t say the O-Line was dreadful either; Jason was comfortable pretty much the entire game, minus the play that took seven years off my life when he just barely escaped the rush in our own endzone.
In the redzone, I understand Zorn wanting to just smash it in with his pro-bowl RB behind his pro-bowl FB and pro-bowl left tackle. Unfortunately, this week and last week prove that our identity is not a smash-mouth running team anymore. The age of the line is reason, but that does not mean the season is lost. Zorn needs to understand this and use the other weapons on this team. The great news is, playcalling can be improved weak to weak much more easily than talent.
Hail to the Redskins, a must-win game was won today. Everyone be happy.

Rec'd back atcha.
But I also agree with liger’s comment below that the lack of redzone scoring has become the staple of a Jim Zorn offense. Good thing a lack of redzone scoring is the staple of a Greg Blache defense.

trends
The issue is that this is more than just one or two games that can be turned around easily. It is a trend from the 2-6 team from last year. I agree with everything you are saying when look at from a one game perspective. The trend continued in this game and some of us were all hoping that we could break it against a weak team like the Rams. We have another ‘get well’ team next week and another chance to break the trend. If we score redzone tds, then the stl game is forgotten and we can move on to rooting for what I considered a playoff team.

Having calmed down
a bit, I am ready to say that I AM happy to have the win. And I am happy that the defense held them to 7 points, and came up with some great stops. I still think that once this defense jells and Orakpo gets unhinged, they’re gonna be scary.
As for the offense, there are some good things to take out of it. 1- it appears Cooley is well on his way to establishing himself as an annual pro bowler. 2- Kelly has definitely earned Campbell’s trust, and I think he will get better every week. And 3- MARCUS MASON got the ball.
Now, here’s the flip side. While Campbell had a solid outing, we all know that he needs to start adding TD’s to his line. Which is where I’m going with this. If you’re stuck on throwing to the sideline where the boundary is essentially a 12th defender, fine. As long as it keeps gettin you downfield, however lethargic. But once in the Red Zone, all I ask for is ONE end zone fade. Four trips to the Red Zone, throw 1 fade each time like nearly every other team does. I bet you we’d score a TD at least half the times.

not an arguement from me on this CJH
but the reason people are pissed is due to the lack of TD’s. I can grok that, but that isn’t on Zorn, that’s on the players. This wasn’t one of those “wtf was that play” kind of series like game 1, this was all on Mike “whoops, I just signed a big contract extension and forgot to catch the ball” Sellars, and Devin " I don’t get enough touches because I’m dropping passes at key times in the game" Thomas. The other red zone debacle was that asinine ruling on the Moss fumble. I can buy that he didn’t have control of the ball when his knee hit, but he did when his hand/arm did. So why was it overruled? Also, I gotta believe that the league has to start accounting for when these plays are reviewed and they note an infraction that is now obvious but wasn’t called. They have to be givin some lattitude to allow the CALL to be the correct one. Say you buy into Moss fumbling the ball and the Rams recovering it, how in the hell does that completely wipe out the fact that Moss is getting face masked at the time and now that everyone in the whole world sees it, yet nothing can be done about it.
In short it comes down to this if the players execute, the red zone controversy ends because we score when we should have. Instead we are gonna get to hear all about the ‘Skins offensive struggles (and yes, I know we’re not an offensive juggernaut) for the next week and that all of the pressure is on Zorn. Not sure what else he can do, he called those plays, JC actually threw the ball where it could be caught and our guys simply tanked ’em.
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....

I'm not excusing
Sellers and Thomas. I love Big Mike. But the truth is, he’s been a liability as a goal line pass catcher the past few years. And as for Thomas, all he’s shown me is that I wanna see what Marko can do.
Also, I’m not saying Zorn called a bad game. Just a bad RED ZONE game. Sure, those players should have caught those balls. But I still think there were better plays to run. We brought these “big guys” in to create mismatches in the Red Zone. Zorn himself said this. But instead, we throw a chest pass to Thomas in the middle of the end zone. And why couldn’t Davis be in for Sellers? (Why do I get the feeling that Fred Davis is gonna be a VERY good tight end – for another team?) And that 4th down play? You don’t think JC could’ve gotten half a yard leaning forward there? Why would you run a stretch play when you need a few inches? Are you TRYING to make it harder on yourself?
I guess what I’m saying is, I’ll take a win no matter how it comes. But 9 points isn’t gonna win you most games. So why don’t we just try to score more?

Goal Line stretch play
I didn’t get to see the game (I live in the great plains and I can’t afford NFL Sunday Ticket) but when I say the game summary I was wondering why they ran a stretch play on 4th and 1. Were they getting manhandled inside?
I did watch the Vikings-Lions game and the Lions actually look like they have some potential so I hope the Redskins don’t assume a win against them.

If you know someone in the nova area..
if you can’t afford the nfl ticket but you still wanna watch the game you should look into the slingbox you have to know someone who gets the games and ask them to hook up the sling box which will let you watch (from your comp) whatever channel they are watching, so if they’re watching the game you can get in streamed to your comp. i think they’re under a $100 or so but it’s a cheap alternative to getting the ticket.

I thought the best observation was the pick-6 of Tony Romo.
definitely one of the key points to the Redskins success in the future.

Huge win for the Giants.
I’d rather score 9 and win than 31 and lose.
Oh, and the Giants were also 0-5 in the redzone yesterday. Bulger is just a much better QB than Romo. lol.

Another team that scored 9 points
Is the Pats. Granted, the Jets are better than the Rams, but the point is that no team in the NFL has looked unbeatable so there are still things that every team has to work on.

Rex Ryan has transformed that Jets team into monsters. They were sucking up Brady’s oxygen all day. Alas…..

I wish we'd utilize
More of those scary, all out blitzes like the Ravens, Steelers, Eagles, etc… I’d specifically like to see us do it on third down because what we’re doing now just isn’t working. If our defense could learn to get off the field on 3rd down we’d be even that much better.

yep
we’d be 2 and 0, with a much feared defense.
