"I think [Riggins] was a great running back, but, you know, think of who else was around him," Portis said. "That was really not hard to be a great running back when you’ve got that talent all around you. I think they just had great teams, you know. I think everybody who played in that era as a running back is big around here....It ain’t no ill will. I’m minding my business, and hopefully he’ll do the same. … He deserves to be a legend."
Portis Riggins Media Feud
This is a tough call. I agree with Portis on some levels, especially with the supporting cast Riggo had. How would Riggo do behind this offensive line?

Portis might rack up the yards eventually if he plays long enough to surpass Riggins’ yards with us, but he will never be the man Riggins was. Integrity and Respect are two reasons. Riggins never threw his coach or his team mates under the bus…

when did Portis do this?

Except when he sat out the entire 1980 season over money. How would that not qualify as throwing your team under the bus? Riggins was just as cocky then as Portis is now. Fact is, back then there wasn’t nearly as much media coverage of sports as there is now. If Riggins had been getting interviewed as much as Portis does, he would have said some very nasty things about the Redskins.

When this all started
I may have agreed more with Riggo, but Portis has proven his worth over the years. If his career ended today I’d say he was a great back .He is also a excellent blocking back which I dont remember Riggins being as good at.
Portis has kept quiet and has been doing his his job nicely. I think its about time Riggins kept his mouth shut and just let it be already. Quite frankly I’m starting to lose respect for the guy. It’s also starting to look more and more like he’s just jealous of Portis.
HEY RIGGO, time to shut your trap and stop causing a distraction that this team doesn’t need.
Start talking about other players who need to step up on this team. The hogs had other running backs win super bowls behind them not the other way around. Portis consistently has great years without a great O-line.
So to recap: SHUT UP RIGGINS!

Hold up
did portis say something to get this going recently? or are people just talkin smack to get him riled up? to my knowledge, CP has been pretty quiet lately..

No...
It goes back to January when Riggo called Portis a ‘headache." Portis is obviously trying to bury the hatchet, but he took a swipe at Riggo before doing so. I don’t consider it a big deal at all.
by KevinE on Sep 2, 2009 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It actually goes back a few years
This fued is fueled way more by Riggins than Portis. Riggins is always taking swipes at him, when Portis is usually just trying to stand up for himself. So I dont mind Portis actually firing a shot back.

When did all this CP hate start?
I don’t understand it, the guy is going to be our all-time leading rusher, and by the way a large portion of people talk, you’d think he hasn’t done anything. People think CP should show Riggo “respect”, how about Riggins shuts his hypocritical mouth and shows CP some respect as well. You call out CP for occassionally running his mouth too much, but Riggins is deified for doing the exact same things?
People seem to think that just b/c Riggins has a ring, he can say anything he wants. Riggins didn’t win that ring by himself, he was a star on the team to be sure, but you put CP on that team and he’d also have a ring.
If you actually read Clinton’s remarks, everything he says is factual. You’re going to hate him b/c he pointed out that Riggins’ had a better line? Or that he should just mind his own business? Talk about revisionist history!

Portis needs to shut up.
I don’t care about him taking a swipe at Riggo but what does this say about the offensive line? It definitely doesn’t instill any confidence in them. He’s basically saying that they’re not very good and that he’s been this great 1k yard per season rusher by himself. While there may be some truth to that, theres no reason for him to say it.

He either said that
or he was just giving praise to the team as a whole back then. take it as you will. i just wish everybody would leave CP the hell alone and let him do his thing. I hadn’t heart a peep out of the man in months, and now people wanna get on his back about Riggins again because they can’t dig up any other kind of dirt.

I don’t have a problem with him pointing out that Riggins ran behind a Hall-of-Fame line. All he’s saying, as I see it, is that Riggins had one of the greatest lines in history. He never said anything positive or negative about our current line. Anyway, they need to worry more about the people who outright say that they’re no good, and use that as motivation. Besides, Portis was asked a question. Yes, he could decline to comment, but he knows Riggins isn’t going to shut up, so he may as well defend himself.

When did he say that?

Don’t you think you’re kind of stretching it a little to think that Portis is trying to say that our current offensive line isn’t very good? What Portis was doing was saying how great the offensive line Riggins ran behind was. “The Hogs” are the best offensive line ever in my opinion (yeah I am biased but so what). I’m pretty sure our current offensive line would tell you which line is better and I’m confident they wouldn’t say themselves.

a quote from a year ago? seriously? a lot can change in a year, along with him throwing people under the bus, he’s been quite mum over these past few months.

That does nothing for me
This quote from a year ago has nothing to do with the quote from Portis about Riggins and his offensive line. As I said before, Portis’ recent quote about Riggins having a great offensive line to run behind was mostly a compliment of how great that line was. Portis didn’t mention this year’s offensive line once, so how can you think that Portis was inferring that the offensive line isn’t very good? You just can’t bash someone for what you think they were trying to infer.
by bigrm18 on Sep 2, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why can't I bash him?
I can bash Portis all I want. The guy is clearly not a team player. In the last two years, he has put his offensive line and coach under the bus and openly complained to the media about them. To me, that’s simply unacceptable. That being said, I’ll continue to cheer for the guy because he runs hard and he wears the burgundy and gold.

Wait a minute
You’re confusing the hell out of me. Do you want to bash Portis or do you want to cheer for him because you can’t do both.
Secondly I never said you couldn’t bash him, I said you couldn’t bash him for what you think he was trying to say indirectly, even though he clearly wasn’t.
by bigrm18 on Sep 2, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why can't I do both?
I’ll always cheer for the redskins, regardless of whether or not I agree with their actions.
After that link from above, I don’t know how you can possibly think Portis wasn’t taking a swipe at his current offensive line. Remember, he can praise Riggens team and throw his own team under the bus at the same time.

If you say so
I still don’t see why you think Portis was talking badly about our offensive line by praising the Hogs but okay. We’ll agree to disagree.

Yeah he has BUT..............
The hogs weren’t just a great line. They were head and shoulders above the rest of the league most of the time. The best period. Tractor Trailers could have been driven through some of those holes.
Another fact people overlook is that the other three teams in this division have been winning it because, lets all say it together, they always have great defenses and who has to go up against those defenses, you guessed it, Portis!
The fact of the matter is Portis is more of a complete back than Riggo ever was, and I like Riggo. Portis isnt going to overtake Riggins because he sucks. Its because he’s great!
When Portis is gone someday, everyone that bitches about him now will realize how complete he is and then we’ll be hearing about how we need to get a running back and all the comaprisons will be to Portis not Riggins.

Okay but what about
the fact that Riggo lived in a public storage unit. That has to count for something.
