It's starting already!
Chris Samuels didn't participate in practice because of a "knee situation." It didn't take long for his knee to start acting up did it? Do you think we should hold him out the next few games to try and get his knee into proper shape since we're playing some pretty mediocre teams?

I think we should sign a good backup tackle with starting experience. I was hoping it would have happend this week…guess not.
Langston Walker?
I’m not too interested in Runyan or Tauscher they have worse knee problems than Samuels and I’m assuming if Runyan has anything left he will go back to the tackle needy Eagles and if they don’t scoop him that means he doesn’t have anything left.

This is the exact reason I predicted the Skins would go 8-8
I didnt think it would happen b/w week 1 and 2. We should dress, but sit him for STL and DET….we can win w/o him…let him rest.
Didn't Zorn say
that Samuel’s knee would be “managed” throughout the course of the season? Clearly you want your #1 lineman practicing all week, but maybe its just to give him an extra bit of rest. If he misses practice again tomorrow then there is an issue. Until then, don’t worry too much.
Kendall comes to mind
How many practices did he actually perform in last year, while he was being managed
he sat out atleast 1 practice a week
I think Weds. was his regular day off and sometimes he’d take 2 off in a week. I think people are reading too much into this. He has a chronically sore knee so he should get some rest during the week. Vets on every team get rested like that and manage to play every game. We knew they were gonna do this since Mini-camp. I’m not gonna worry still they start listing him as doubtful for games.

He was solid down the stretch
and played every game. I think the fact that he is like 39 is the main reason he’s not on a team not a knee that needs rest.

How many times did they run behind Samuels against NYG?
Seemed like a lot. Guess Heyer and Thomas aren’t holding up on the run or maybe Portis’s left is his most comfortable.

I think Dockery is a big part of that
He’s our best run mauler on the line.

crapcrapcrapcrapcrapcrap
You get the sense that they were trying to downplay things by calling it a “knee situation”? Yet, is there anything more alarming than your starting Pro Bowl left tackle having a “knee situation”? That’s like saying Scottie Pippen has an “ugly situation”.
yeah
I just saw this. Walk away from the computer for 15 minutes, and Samuels is hurt already. If Walker is still out there, I say we snatch him up.
Now, that being said, I know their “contingency plan” is for Heyer to take over on the left with Williams on the right. Well, maybe this is the week to see it. Assuming Samuels plays, lets say we get up 17 points on the Rams. ( I tried to keep it reasonable) Maybe we should shift Heyer over and trot Williams out on the right. With Chris Long and Leonard Little they have some pretty good pass rushers to give those guys some work.
Maybe....
we should all just stop looking at Redskins blogs until the off season. Everyday I find something new to panic over.

haha, yea, the cap hit would be brutal with that
Plus, a one-legged Samuels is 3x better than anything else we got

cut yourself, preferably deep and across the throat! we're tired of idiocy
You are a mongoloid. You seriously think cutting Samuels is a good idea? Maybe your boyfriend fisted you a little hard this morning. Step in front of a bus at no loss nor cost to humanity. Acquiesce forthwith bitch! Silence your aforementioned opinions henceforth or you stand to get crushed.

You're an idiot
Tourist178, i respect your opinion but disagree with it.
@ TheunderlordMarshal, whats your deal?
That will never happen...
You know Dan and Vinny are up in his office right now trying to figure a way to trade the rest of the 2010 draft picks. They’ll bring in some fossil that will not play just collect paychecks.
Why is everyone so worked up over this?
We were told to expect this all summer then when it happens people act like it’s the end of the world. If he needs to take some practices off to be available on game day it’s not a big deal alot of vets get days off. It’s not like his knee got worse or he hurt himself.
In Hindsight...
We should’ve passed on Orakpo and snagged an O-Lineman
I disagree
Both lines needed serious upgrades and Orakpo was a more talented player than Oher. I’m not saying the O-line didn’t need some serious help I’m just saying the D-line was in just as bad of shape and was looking alot like the O-line was last year(clearly approaching a huge drop off) We should have been investing draft picks on O-linemen the last several years. It put us in a position where we had huge holes on both lines so we picked the most talented lineman at our spot. I don’t think reaching for a player because he fills an arguably more pressing need is an effective way to build a team that is competitive every year. It reminds me too much of Cerrato deciding we had to get a big pass catcher so using three 2nd rounders on them when the O-line and D-line clearly was getting old. The fact that he didn’t address either of those lines with a second rounder contributed significantly to not only the O-line dropping off but us having to make that panic trade for JT which further hampered our ability to upgrade the O-line. If you look at our O and D lines and remove Jarmon and Orakpo from the equation the D-line was a more pressing concern, especially in the long term. I just want the team to think ahead and stockpile talent on both lines so people are ready to step up when needed instead of waiting for there to be a huge hole and making knee jerk moves to try and fix things. Taking Orakpo was one of the more encouraging things for me in awhile in terms of seeing signs that the team knows how to build for the future.

no
first of all the only tackle available for that spot was Oher, and he’s a right tackle. I think we got the better player with Orakpo. I’d rather have a legit playmaker on defense than a question mark O-lineman, even if it is our bigger need. What we SHOULD have done was spend mor epics on O-linemen last year, and drafted some O-linemen this year. We need to start using multiple picks on O-linemen in every draft, until we can build a legitimate line. If we don’t use our first 2 picks on O-linemen next year, then Vinny’s an idiot even bigger idiot than I thought.
nothing new
Yeah it’s not good news but nothing shocking considering the team has only drafted 4 linemen since they drafted Samuels in 2000. And of those on;y Dockery panned out:
Year rnd pick player pos
2002 6 192 Reggie Coleman T
2003 3 81 Derrick Dockery G
2004 6 180 Jim Molinaro T
2006 7 230 Kili Lefotu G
I’m not too upset at Orakpo being drafted after all the pass rush was horrid last year so it was something that needed to be fixed.
The big problem is ignoring the situation for years. It’s an owner & FO problem, not a HC problem.
One pattern I see there in terms of drafting
The 3rd Round should pretty much be the cutoff point for drafting offensive Tackles, Guards, and Centers. I’m not saying you can’t find a diamond in the rough, but we need to pick our OL no later than the 3rd round to get our best shot at a keeper.
The one position on the OL where that is an exception is the LT. I believe the LT should be picked no later than the 1st round. LT is one of the most important positions in the NFL (preceded by CB and QB).
