Game Preview: Washington Redskins versus New York Giants
TV:
![]()
Radio: 980 AM, 730 AM (Spanish), 94.3 FM and 92.7 FMSunday, September 13, 4:15PM
Jets Giants Stadium
Weather: Party Cloudy, 81 degrees
Not expected to play: Aaron Ross
Note: Randle El and Rock Cartwright are the current starting PR/KR
What I am watching for:
1.) Protecting Jason - He took a few good shots this season, and now he faces the best defensive line in the NFL. I've already told me he's going to have to throw the ball in the dirt a lot, but let's try to get out of this game without any jailbreaks where he gets a helmet in the heart.
2.) Discipline. First, no stupid personal foul penalties, ESPECIALLY on 3rd downs (DeAngelo Hall). We racked up a lot of calls this pre-season...hopefully the team is on point.
3.) Horton. - With the less-than-stellar WR corps the Giants have, Horton should have a lot of blitzing opportunities. Eli should be on his back a few times.
4.) Hanesworth vs Jacobs - I mean, first play of scrimmage has to be Jacobs up the middle, right? That or a play action deep ball to Sinorice Moss. If the Redskins stop the run (big task), then the Skins will have a good shot. The Skins secondary is too good to be picked apart.

I know I'm beating
a long dead horse here, but
Note: Randle El and Rock Cartwright are the current starting PR/KR
Does anyone else know why they won’t give Tryon a shot at PR? Did you see how fast that guy was on that INT against Jacksonville(?)? I mean, he claimed coming out of college that he was a great returner. Maybe he be more of a help there than in the secondary.

b/c our games are going to be too close that a mistake/turnover in the return game will = L.

it's a horse that deserves to be continually beaten
ARE returning kicks is a complete waste of time. almost literally.
I believe he fair caught more punts than any other returner with at least a couple returns last year.
arggggh. I hate that he’s still PR

I wholeheartedly agree… well except that considering the clock stops on a fair catch, I’ld call all the other returns (where he dekes 3 or 4 times and runs 20 yards east and west for a 1 or 2 yard return) the bigger literal waste of time.

If he was better than ARE, they would have him there.

Not necessarily
I’m convinced that Fat Albert is better at returning punts than ARE is.

Isn't there a risk factor here??
Using one of our few WR with any appreciable experience in KR/PR seems crazy. I don’t really want to see ARE hurt (or anyone for that matter). Is there another fast guy with good hands at a ‘safer’ position?? like Tryon maybe (if he can do it)?

I'm looking for
three things we haven’t seen around here in awhile:
1. A defensive score (Hall, or maybe Orakpo)
2. An offensive play (hopefully scoring) longer than 60 yards
3. Manning on the ground A LOT

I will pee my pants if our D scores! Winning the TO battle is going to be huge in winning this game.

Exactly
what we need is some forced turnovers. One thing that drove me nuts during the Game 1 loss against the Giants last season was that it felt like Manning was almost trying to turn over the ball with some of the risky passes he was making but no one was there to make the play. Do that and keep Campbell relatively safe and this game is winnable. Pass the kool-aid.

Don't forget to watch
The punt coverage teams. Not sure who’s returning punts for NYG, but the preseason gave me little confidence in being able to stop whoever that may be…

If anyone cares...
Joe Theisman was on NFL Network on a show called NFC Playbook. He predicted that the Redskins would win against the Giants and Sterling Sharpe began to say it was a homer pick from Theisman and began to give him grief.
But what really, really baffled the hell out of me is who Sterling Sharpe thinks is going to play in Super Bowl 44.
Wait for it…
Wait some more…
The Dallas Cowboys?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
After saying something so idiotic as that I don’t know how Sharpe can think he can possibly make fun of anyone else’s pick or prediction. I’ve heard some crazy predictions, but the Cowboys making it to the Super Bowl?
Maybe Sharpe was taking some medication or drugs and was under the influence of something very, very strong. If Sharpe didn’t take anything I demand that he be checked into a mental hospital ASAP. He is a threat to all humans.

I watched it
I thought it was funny also that he picked the Cowpies and then laughed at Theisman. I never really like either of the Sharpe brothers as analysts.
Besides, anyone else have a hard time understanding Shannon Sharpe when he speaks?

Not sure if I see the joke here
Theisman is one of the worst in NFL broadcasting about homerism, a lot of guys go out of their way to bash their former teams or at least be extra critical of them (see Aikman) but Joe is just as biased as can be. The worst part is that unlike Jaws he pretends he isn’t being a homer, at least Jaws admits it.
Don’t sleep on Dallas, we are a good team and if we stay healthy can play with any team in the league. I think most people writing us off as third in the division at best will fire this team up. Bring on the hate!

third in the division???
We were thinking more like 4th in the division.

Cowboys 6-10
Biggest implosion in the NFC East. They’ll be last year’s Redskins, with no dynamics in the Offense, as they’ll have a very good RB, a great TE, and ONE WR who needs to be covered…. oh, and an old, breaking down OL.
Problem is, they don’t get to play the Cowboys twice a year to get an extra victory….
And Troy Aikman is the third biggest homer in the NFL among broadcasters… Moose is #1, and for some reason Chris Collinsworth is a Cowboy lover (dude never played in Dallas and is always in the tank for the Cowboys)
by BillWard on Sep 13, 2009 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
they have a wide receiver worth covering?
by CJHutch on Sep 13, 2009 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
While I agree that Theismann and Jaws are homers, you’re drinking the kool-aid if you think Aikman is impartial (For example, note the sarcasm in this Onion article).
Maybe you’re comparing him to Moose, in which case Aikman looks somewhat impartial.

Is Chris Canty also out?
The pass blocking is one thing, but if the OL can’t make holes for Clinton and if Clinton can’t hit them the way we have gotten used to then it will be a long night.
I’m really confident that the passing game and the defense can take the next step this year, but I’m nervous that the running game might take a step back. Someone please tell me that there’s nothing to worry about.

So far no
But besides Aaron Ross being hurt I think their #2 corner is also hurt.

The Skins secondary is too good to be picked apart.
Exactly. With their inferior WR corps, there will be NO excuses for our DBs to give up big plays. Like you said:
Horton should have a lot of blitzing opportunities.
1) The biggest match-up of the game: Our OL vs. their DL. We should be able to hold our own in the beginning. But as the game wears on, will our OL wear out (especially with their rotation depth)? This will be a real test.
2) The 2nd biggest match-up of the game: The player the Gints’ fans have appropriately dubbed “the Juggernaut” (Brandon Jacobs) vs. our “Hulk”. And no I’m not talking about Haynesworth. I’m talking about Phillip Daniels. That’s right, the NFL’s strongman (real life powerlifter)!! Watch him squat 722 lbs. no problem. Then, watch him pull a 600 lb. deadlift. When they get tired of hitting the Haynesworth wall, they will surely start running to the right. Yeah I know, he’s old as dirt. But, Daniels is still one of the best run stoppers in the league.
I expect the va-Giants to run early and often. And I expect our DL to be impenetrable. If Jacobs does get a favorable blocking package here or there and breaks through, then our Secondary will need to collapse hard and fast before he can build up steam. Fred Smoots’ tackle of MJD in the Jags game should be the same method used to exploit Jacobs’ only known vulnerability – his knees.
3) We know Orakpo can pass rush. But how will he handle the open field coverage of TEs? Kevin Boss could prove to be a big pain in the ass if Rak can’t keep up.
by VA_Skin on Sep 12, 2009 6:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
as long as they
don’t put Fletcher on Boss. I love LFB, but he has no shot at covering Boss. Essentially, there’s a difference of one Darrell Green between the two.
by CJHutch on Sep 12, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rak definitely has the speed to keep up with any TE. And Blache trusting him to do so is pretty significant, considering how infamous Blache is for not trusting rookies.

we are
going to be the lions of 2009 if we keep playing like this.
goddamn it. stupid penalties, campbell making bad decisions….let’s not forget the lack of tackling.
fuck.
wish we had drafted sanchez

will redskins go to the playoffs?
If we get to the playoffs we need to improve on pass completions, reducing the amount of penalties we get and improve the running game. this week demonstrated good potential but we still did not win the game. We must come out strong, establish a run game and pass for more than 4 yards at a time. this year we have to make it further than last year and at least get to the NFC East championship.
