Mike Williams To Guard?
Hello Everyone! I am a newbie here! I found you guys through Chris Cooley's blog. Looks like a perfect fit for an old Fun Bunch and Hogs fan.
How come they don't switch Big Mike Williams over to the guard or center position? It seems that he just fits there nicely. He seems quick enough to pull on the runs/sweeps and is definitely big enough to run block. Also, with Randy Thomas on the mend it just makes sense to me. Any info would be appreciated!

Guard
It’s not out of the question. The times I’ve been to training camp he has taken some snaps there. Playing guard though he’ll have to defend some really quick pass rushers and I don’t think he’s ready for that yet. I did see him handle Renaldo who tried a speed move around him, but the play before he got bull-rushed by Wynn and knocked flat on his back. definitely an option tho. I look forward to seeing how the line does in the upcoming preseason games.

I'm sure
they would look at it before cutting him, but they probably want to exhaust their options at RT first. Especially since they don’t have a proven starter “option.” Plus, I t

damnit, got cut off
I think they are already counting Bridges as a guard, and they also have Rinehart there. What they don’t have is a STARTER at RT, let alone a backup. Nor do they have a backup LT really.

Williams would have to be really quick to play center being the DL can typically get first contact due to the snap time. Plus at 6-6 he would need to stay lower to the ground to avoid getting stood up and pushed back. E williams and Batiste are decent backup center options, so I would think guard would be the better option if RT does not work out for him. We are very thin at RT and LT so I expect the Skins to give him every chance to win th RT spot before moving him. I also expect the skins to look at signing another T for depth, I know Runyan is out there still and I think he is near recovery from knee surgery….not sure if we have the cap space after Orakpo signed.

I think not
Williams is still trying to get back to being able to play football. Even if he does get some practice time at guard, I think they’ll keep him predominately at tackle until they know he can actually play. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t make the 53-man roster and gets signed to the practice squad. I doubt any one else in the league is very interested in him, but the Redskins could treat him like a project and sign him to the squad if there are injuries.

i agree
this is the most likely scenario. If I had to guess now, I think #71 makes the final squad.

Who are the backup tackles if Williams is cut or put on the paractice squad? Bridges and Devin Clark? How does Clark look in person…I have not heard him mentioned at all? CJ noted above that Levi Jones is out there still…he was cut after andre smith was drafted by cinncy. I would love to see us get levi jones for a cheaper one year deal. I think signing a vet for RT or backup T would be a wise move if we have the cap space. I have not seen the cap number since orakpo and jarmon were signed. We were 3.5m under prior to that. Maybe we are waiting to clear some cap space with cuts or even hoping to pick someone who gets release in a cap move.

He would do well at Guard...
keep in mind his old teammate Leaonard Davis plays guard and has done very well in that roll.

Mike Williams possibilities?
Williams claim to fame in high school was defense. It would not hurt to give him some practice tests on defense before cutting him.

Mike Williams high school record
There is reason to believe he can play defense, but there also needs to be some rationale for keeping Williams on the 53 man roster if the idea is to buy time. Some have thought he was eligible for the practice squad, but he isn’t.
- Attended The Colony High in Texas where he played lineman on both offense and defense
- Named Districts Defensive Player-of-the-Year as a senior and second-team Texas 5A All-State
- Recorded 67 tackles and six sacks as a defensive tackle as a senior

I don't see it
not saying he couldn’t make it at D- tackle. Just not for us. To shift him over there we would have to A) sign another O-tackle, and B) cit one of the D-tackles we have now, who have played the position a little more recently.
