Crabtree
The NFL owners should make a pact that they will not draft Michael Crabtree next year. If Crabtree sits out this year, he will re-enter the draft next year. He is such a crybaby. The owners and GMs should do something to prevent this from happening in the future. If he doesnt get draftted next year, he will be screwed. He has a lot of potential but I think this holdout is absurd. I am curious to know what everyone else thinks.

What are the details?
What have they offered him that he has rejected? Is he still demanding top 3 money?

Crabtree’s been present at offseason workouts, but hasn’t participated because he’s been rehabbing his foot injury. He has, by the way, been rehabbing and working out with 49ers staff and, furthermore, it’s his “adviser” who said this about sitting out. Crabtree himself has yet to comment, and his agent has said that that threat isn’t being made. Keep in mind that his “adviser” is his cousin, and that this is probably some relation of his who has a degree in some related field but is vastly under-qualified to represent an NFL player. Crabtree probably just gave him that job because he’s family, not because he would ever trust the man with anything important. This guy just wants to feel important.

What he wants is
top money, yes. From what i’ve heard al davis is just screwing everyone because of drafting a fast WR and giving him a big deal. and now crabtree wants that kind of money DHB is getting because al davis is the worst owner in the world. He thinks he better than where he was drafted and he thinks he should get the kind of money a top 5 pick gets, when the fact is that nobody in the 9 spots ahead of teh niners selected him. He may also be basing his contract on what the other top 10 players are getting. since he thinks he is so amazing he may be asking for around 37-40 mil based on DHBs and the other top picks getting 60+ mil. and based on what raji, monroe and maybin (andre smith is apparently no where close to signing) get when they sign he may ask for more or close to an average of what those three make. but if he does re-enter the draft next year you know there will be that one team (Raiders, Lions) that just cant pass on him, even though his attitude is shit, but he may also screw himself because teams may also not want to take him and risk his attitude. either way though he will take a pay cut whether it be late first, second, or third round money, or burger king pay.
Alright lets make a pact no one can draft him but if he falls to us, we’ll take him.
I think we are going to start seeing draftees using UFL as leverage, they can earn over 1 mil for like a 6 week season…
To the fifty morons who wouldn't draft him...
are you serious? he may end up as a bust, but his collegiate career certainly justifies him wanting top 3 money. he should take what he is offered because its absurd money for catching a football, but not draft him at all? This type of mentality pretty much echoes what I hear from local (DE) skins fans and you guys have the most clouded perspective of reality I have ever seen. What is great to watch, and what is probably the perect storm for a sports fan, is that you know you are a mediocre team and yet you always start strong, start feeling good, but still knowing that the inevitable late season collapse is coming. I love it because you give eagles fans somehing to laugh at. I think its no wonder why the eagles are at the top of the league each year. We can lose twice to a terrible team and still make another NFC title game. Before you mock this because we haven’t been to more super bowls, win a playoff game.
Hey douche
Before you mock this because we haven’t been to more super bowls, win a playoff game.
We just won a playoff game in the season before last. You’re on the wrong block spitting that BS. Here, – try this sports blog. Looking at your other posts, it sounds like you will fit right in .
RAK EM UP!
If I had to pick one coach who I bet would not be afraid to punch a rookie in the face...
…it would be Singletary. If I was Crabtree, I would strongly consider attending training camp without a contract. Singletary is going to make him cry like Dick Vermeil.
I don't think
rookies are allowed to attend training camp without contracts. Anyway, Crabtree should be less worried about whether or not he’s got a contract and more about whether or not he’s got a QB who can throw to him.

Honestly expected this to be a post suggesting the skins trade their 10 first round pick for him.
If Thomas and Kelly continue this game of musical chairs on the sideline (with injuries) I honestly dont think it would be a horrible idea.
fuck crabtree.
I’d rather stick with what he have then get another Chad Johnson or T.O.

Your Eagles should trade Maclin for him!
I don’t think that would be a horrible idea either.

Since I had Maclin above Crabtree on draft day I would def place that in the horrible idea file.
How can you justify that trade past passive aggressive pettiness?? I didnt bring up the eagles, why do you feel the need to?? You should have a pick next year (based on popular opinion around here) that should be 20+ and an owner that has shown he has no regard for current salary structures. If he was under contract most some of his diva issues would be taken care of and no one can argue that picking up Crabtree for a low 1st would be good value. Maybe you are reading different training camp reports than I am but unless someone finds a way to step up behind moss its going to be a long year.
Saying you dont want to deal with TO2.0 is understandable but shoot it down just b/c it was an eagles fan who posted it.

wouldn’t you be angry if you had to wake up in Philadelphia every day?
by Parks Smith on Aug 10, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions
so every eagles fan lives in the city limits
I would be angry, because its not hawaii, but wouldnt you rather have a winning team every year with an actual shot at a super bowl, than rooting for your trash. I would, but like i said above, you guys have that clouded view of reality. didn’t even get to the phillies…
I think it’d be a huge, huge mistake for the NFL owners to make that kind of agreement because it’s illegal.
Based on principle? If I were an owner, I wouldn’t be interested in that kind of a deal. I wouldn’t necessarily want to draft him, but if Crabtree wants to be ridiculous and someone else still wants him, that’s their business.
Bo Jackson sat out after the Bucs drafted him
and I don’t hear anyone complaining about how immoral it was for the Raiders to draft him the next year.
Constant passenger of the Jason Campbell Bandwagon since 2007. Keep on driving, brother.
That's cuz he had an excuse (baseball)
the Bucs didn’t want him to play baseball.
The Niners don’t want to pay the 10th pick more than the 7th pick, which they are correct in doing.
Are YOU really suggesting a team should overpay?!
Where should the line be drawn? At times Crabtree was rated as the #1 prospect, should he get more money than Stafford?? Rey Maualuga was thought of as of the top MLB prospect and ended up dropping into the 2nd round, if he was holding out of camp hoping for top 20-25 money would your feeling be the same. Hell, if Orakpo was holding out saying he wouldnt show up unless he got Tyson Jackson money how would you feel.
Lets compare this to another local sports story… The Nubinals and Steven Strausburg. Do we really want the NFL draft to become the MLB draft, top players/prospects dropping out of the top spots because owners are afraid of dealing with the Boras/Rosenhaus of the world. Players routinely giving up a year of playing only to enter the draft again next year.
There is a system that has been in place for years that has been proven to work out fine for everyone, hell if anything it has proven to be more than generous to players chosen in similar positions. If we are going to flip it upside down and “ring that bell” it better be for a player that has shown us way more than Crabtree has.

In the end, though
Holdouts are the nature of the beast as far as first round picks go. There’s always multiple first-rounders holding out every year. It sucks, but unless the NFL adopts rookie payscales, there will always be rookies paid way too much money (JaMarcus Russel, Matthew Stafford), and there will always be rookies who get labeled as “divas.” His holdout will end, just like everyone else’s does.

My question was directed at the Eli apologist
But I see the Crabtree fiasco as a perfect example of why we need a rookie salary cap system.

coming from someone
who’s team has Deangelo Hall, Haynesworth, had Archuleta, Randle El and countless others?
I’ll overpay my QB (we’ll see on the results…) and you can keep rooting for a team that overpays ego’s like Haynesworth and Hall.

Exactly my point
Now you’re throwing rocks from a glass house. Welcome to the club, SUCKA!!
RAK EM UP!
LOL
a team that has a long history of overpaying with Snyder as owner and winning dick gets on me for defending my SB winning QB who takes his team to the playoffs every year? SURE!

Except for one problem
You’re seriously saying that Michael Crabtree deserves less than Darius Heyward-Bey? Are you out of your mind!? HeyBey was a terrible WR who couldn’t catch. Crabtree was a 2-time Biletnikoff Award winner and an outstanding playmaker. I’ll Crabtree for more money any day.
The fact is that someone wanted DHB more than Crabtree and spoke up with their draft pick and money.
MC will not sit out the entire season. No pay.
If he does, he won’t go top 7 so he’d miss a year of pay and still not get what he wants.
He’ll settle and sign with the 49ers.

Hey-Bey
I went to multiple UMD games this year. To say he can’t catch is ludicrous. Crabtree went through the combine and draft with a rough ankle injury…..Al Davis might have made the right call.
Al Davis
might have made the right decision passing on Crabtree, but he didn’t make the right decision taking Heyward-Bay that high. No one else wanted him anywhere near that high, and Davis could have traded down to pick up some more assets from someone looking to move up. H-B might prove to be worth a #7 pick, but he could have been had for less on that day, so I still think Davis messed up.

totally agree...
I was just bringing to light Hey-Bey might be the better WR…tho reports out of camp are Hey-Bey is strrrrrugling.

MC will not sit out the entire season. No pay.
He would be a fool if he did.
1) After seeing him workout there is no possible way he goes any higher than 10 in a draft class with so many high level WR prospects
2) There is no way anyone sees him workout because the niners will own his draft rights right up until the draft and why would they let him
3) I dont care how much more crabtree thinks he deserves he will never make up the difference in money by getting zero this year.
4) If crabtree is as great as he thinks he is sitting out a year just puts him another year away from getting to his second contract.
by dt3 on Aug 9, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions
heyward bey = 7
crabtree = 10
heybey $ >>> crabtree $
end of story.
by dt3 on Aug 9, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions
exactly
that’s why the NFL needs to wake up and have a slotting system for rookie contracts. It’s assenine that they go through this every year. And regardless, Crabtree does NOT deserve more Heyward-Bay. Not saying he’s not better. But he got drafted below DHB, so he gets paid less. End of story. These rookies need to enter the real world.
He should ...
Go play in the CFL!
End of story.
Crabtree in BFE Canada, playing for Calgary, having passes thrown to him from a guy we have never heard of.
Just sign, and prove what you are worth.
Even more reason everyone should make a base salary with incentive based contracts. Produce on the field, put money in your pocket.
Never a dull moment!
