from the constant worry of when the Turk will come calling. I KNOW I've beat this horse to a pulp by now, but I want to get one last word in before final cuts. The reason I'm saying this is because I think Mason is on the outside looking in. From the reports I've heard, the comments of various coaches, and a little writing on the wall, it just does not look to good for the guy.
I'll admit, I never really paid attention to him on special teams, but the guy is an AWFUL open field tackler. They highlighted his kick coverage on Skins Nation today and, truthfully, I think I could tackle better than this guy, so obviously kick coverage i not his ticket to the dance.
As far as his blocking, yes it needs work. But he's at least shown he can do it. Campbell doesn't score on that run without Mason blocking for him. Frankly, I don't see much difference between his blocking and Betts'. Too many times over the past few years I've seen Betts flailing his arms towards a pass rusher who's already got the jump on him. And I'm not even going to bring up Betts' failures at the goal line.
Now, I realize that it will most likely come down to Mason or Cartwright in the end. It looks like they may be trying Thomas at KR to see if he can handle the duties. (why not see if Mason HIMSELF can handle the duties?) I still think that would be a mistake. Cartwright is our glue on special teams. I maintain Rock is more important to our special teams than Betts is to our offense.
Now, once more thing that I haven't seen brought up in the coverage of our stable of RB's. Cartwright and Betts - 29. Portis - 27. Throw in Sellers' 34, and our average age rounds up to 30. I doubt that there is another team in the league with an average RB age like that. It needs to come down.
All this said, I still feel in my guy that the coaching staff will make the wrong move and let Mason go, barring a (fingers crossed?) serious injury to Betts during his "extended workload" against Jacksonville. Aside from that though, I'm afraid it's "So long Marcus, we only knew ye.......well, actually pretty damned good."
